Killaboss on Great Gnashtoof

Advertisements

About a year ago, I did some Warscroll, which went down quite well with you all. So I thought, why not bring them back and update them?

There are a couple of terms I’ll refer to throughout the article as well. These are Army Points Required (APR) and Army Points Committed (APC). APR is the number of points required to be used in your army list to create the conditions required in certain scenarios. For example a Marshcrawla Sloggoth buffing a Great Gnashtoof with its Krew Drummer ability would result in 280 APR (130 points for the Gnashtoof and 150 for the Marshcrawla Sloggoth). APC is the amount of points in your army committed to creating that scenario in a single turn – this is essentially your APR value divided by 5 (for the number of turns in a game). The assumption being that you’d use your models for all five turns of the game and so you’d be using a fifth of their points value each turn to achieve your objectives or kill an enemy unit. In our above example where the Marshcrawla is buffing the Gnashtoof, you’re committing 56 points of your army to achieve your goal.

What you’ll find here is every hobby aspect of the Killaboss on Great Gnashtoof. From painting to how it plays on the tabletop. If you enjoyed this, please let me know, and I’ll make more.

Paint Schemes

Peter’s Big Yellers Scheme

On the Table

At 130 points I’d consider this great value personally, with a 10″ move it’s one of the fastest units in the army and is great for quickly moving up table and mulching screens and claiming objectives. It’s damage output isn’t terrible either:

Without Buffs

(Attacks Basis) – Buffs2+3+4+5+6+
(Charging) – Base4.445.636.818.008.448.44
(Standard) – Base4.005.046.077.127.567.56
Average Damage Output AFTER Saves

This does mean that you’ll be able to inflict a lot of damage, even on units with a 2+ or 3+ save, mainly thanks to the mortal wounds inflicted from the Stikka. If you give the doggo fast ‘un you’ll great a free move in one of your hero phases, giving it an average move and charge range of 27″.

But what’s the most damage this lad can dish out?

All the Buffs

(Attacks Basis) – Buffs2+3+4+5+6+
(Charging) – Their Finest Hour, Poison 5+, Krew Drummer & Sludgeraker Venom6.667.959.2510.5411.0911.09
(Standard) – Their Finest Hour, Poison 5+, Krew Drummer & Sludgeraker Venom6.667.959.2510.5411.0911.09
Average Damage Output AFTER Saves

Is it points efficient to buff it this much? Definitely not! You’ll need to have a Shaman, Marshcrawla and Sludgeraker included in your list and close to the Gnashtoof for it to benefit. That’s 670 points of your army right there when writing your list. You’re probably better off buffing other units in your army, but at least you know what you can offer in a pinch.

Primal Magic

At the start of the hero phase both players roll a dice. For each 4+, each player receives 1 Primal Magic Dice.

Note: This reads as 1 player rolls 4+, and then both they and their opponent receive the Primal Magic Dice. If they both roll 4+, they both receive 2 dice.

After a player attempts to cast or unbind a spell or endless spell they can roll 1 of their Primal Magic Dice. If they do so, add the result to their roll. The player can continue to roll Primal Magic Dice until they suffer a Primal Magic Miscast or have run out of Primal Magic Dice.

Note: The Primal Magic Dice can be used by any wizards and not just Andtorian Locus. One model I can see benefitting greatly from this is Gobsprakk in the Kruleboyz, who’ll be able to add another dice to his unbind and dispel attempts. This will give him a greater chance of causing mortal wounds against wizards. It will also mean that when using Mandrakk, he could use 4d6 on the dispel, almost guaranteeing the D6 mortals against the enemy caster. What does seem a little busted at this stage is whether Primal Magic Dice count towards the casting roll for ability effects, which cause mortal wounds.

Abilities that allow you to re-roll casting, unbinding, or dispelling rolls must be used before using any Primal Magic Dice. Any such re-rolls cannot be supplemented with the Primal Magic Dice, and any such Dice that remain at the end of the battle round are lost.

Primal Miscast

Rolls which have had Primal Magic Dice added to the result will have a chance of miscasting. This occurs when two or more of the dice are rolled as unmodified 1’s.

The spell is not cast and the caster suffers D3+3 mortal wounds as a result. Any units within 3″ of the caster also suffer D3 mortal wounds. In addition, the caster cannot cast any further spells that phase.

Likewise, if two or more of the dice on a roll which includes Primal Magic Dice are 6’s the spell cannot be unbound, however the caster cannot cast any further spells that phase and both players receive 1 additional Primal Magic Dice.

Realmsphere Magic

You can pick 1 spell from the Lore of Primal Frost for each Andtorian Locus in your army instead of picking 1 spell from another Lore they know.

Hoarfrost

Credit to Games Workshop via Warhammer Community

Note: This spell could be particularly effective on screens or units that are already benefitting from buffs to their to hit or to wound rolls. Once again Kruleboyz and more specifically, Hobgrots could benefit from the increase in damage, kicking out 5-6 successes with 2-3 damage each. Or reinforced Giant Rats with 24 attacks at rend -5 anyone!? Zombies hitting on 2’s?!

Giant Rats Stonks

Rupture

Rupture is a spell that has a casting value of 10 and range of 18″. If successfully cast pick 1 predatory endless spell or Incarnate wholly within range and visible to the caster. The target immediately becomes wild and cannot be picked to be bonded or controlled for the rest of the battle.

Note: Not as effective as you’d first imagine, as pointed out by PlasticCraic, owners of Incarnates are usually very keen for their Krondspines to go wild as early as possible. However, IF an opponent as chosen Magic made Manifest as their grand strategy this would be a useful spell in your pocket.

Merciless Blizzard

Merciless Blizzard has a casting value of 12 and a range of 12″. If successfully cast pick 1 enemy unit within range and visible to the caster. That unit suffers 4D6 mortal wounds, but for each roll of 1 the caster suffers D3 mortal wounds that cannot be negated (No ward saves).

Command Traits

The following command traits can only be chosen for your General if they are an Andtorian Locus.

Shaman of the Chilled Lands

This General knows all the spells from the Lore of Primal Frost.

Eye of the Blizzard

At the start of your hero phase, if your general is on the battlefield roll a dice. On. A 5+ you gain 1 Primal Magic Dice.

Chilled to the Bone

Once per battle, if this general suffers a miscast or primal miscast roll 1 dice. On 3+, the general can ignore the effects of the miscast or primal miscast.

Eater of Magic

Each time this general successfully unbinds a spell roll a dice. On 5+, the caster no longer knows that spell and cannot cast it for the remainder of the battle.

Note: I can see this one being the most commonly taken of the Command Traits from the book. Though whether the benefits are enough for players to choose an Andtorian Locus as their general remains to be seen. The chance to remove spells permanently, such as Spellsinger (Sylvaneth).

Nullstone Adornments

Nullstone Adornments are unique enhancements that can only be included in armies that do not contain any wizards. One can be given to a hero in your army who does not have an Artefact of Power. If you have the ability to take two enhancements you can do so from the table below, but each enhancement can only be included once in your army, and no hero can possess more than one Nullstone Adornment or Artefact of Power.

Note: This is a great little addition for those armies without any wizards such as Blades of Khorne or Fyreslayers. Allowing them to get involved in magic without having to ally in wizards.

Hand-carved Nullstone Icon

The bearer can attempt to unbind one spell or attempt to dispel one endless spell in the enemy hero phase in the same manner as a wizard. Each time the bearer is successful using this ability, the bearer can attempt to dispel one additional spell that phase.

Pouch of Nulldust

Once per battle, at the start of the hero phase, you can say that the bearer will use their pouch of Nulldust. If you do so, until the end of that phase unmodified casting rolls of double 1’s, 2’s or 3’s are treated as miscast, or if a Primal Magic Dice was used as part of the cast, a Primal Miscast. In addition, roll a dice for each endless spell on the battlefield. On a 5+, that endless spell is dispelled.

Note: Once per game, but timed right, it could put a serious dent into your opponent’s spellcasting. However, I suspect that the Hand-carved Nullstone Icon will likely be the go-to adornment for non-wizard armies.

Polished Nullstone Pebble

When this unit is picked as the target of a spell or the abilities of an endless spell, you can roll a dice. On a 4+, the caster must pick another unit within 3″ of this unit and within range of the spell or the Endless Spells abilities to be the target. If there are no other units within 3″, ignore the spell or endless spell effects instead.

Core Battalions

Andtorian Acolytes

Must include at least two Andtorian Locus units and can include up to three Andtorian Locus units.

At the start of the battle, if there are two or more Andtorian Locus units in this battalion roll a dice. On 3+ you gain 1 Primal Magic Dice.

Wizard Finders of Andtor

Must include 1 hero that is not a wizard with 10 wounds or less, as well as 1 infantry unit with a wounds characteristic of 4 or less and is not Leader, Artillery or Behemoth and does not have mounts. It can include an additional infantry unit as described above, as well as a Behemoth unit that is not a leader.

Each time a unit from this battalion is chosen to fight, it may go on a wizard hunt. If it does so, add 1 attack to one of its melee profiles until the end of that phase. But all the attacks of that hit in that phase must target a wizard.

Grand Strategies

Control the Nexus

At the end of the battle, this is achieved if 2 or more friendly wizard units are within 6″ of the centre of the battlefield.

Spellcasting Savant

When the battle ends, if you have chosen an Andtorian Locus as your general, you score this Grand Strategy if your general is still alive.

Slaughter of Sorcery

You complete this Grand Strategy if there are no wizard units on the battlefield at the end of the game.

Barren Icescape

At the end of the battle, if all enemy units with Artefacts of Power and no enemy units are within 6″ of the centre of the board, you complete this Grand strategy.

Overshadow

This grand strategy of completed if, at the end of the battle, all enemy battleline units are destroyed, and you have at least one battleline unit remaining.

Magic made Manifest

Gained at the end of the battle if two or more endless spells/incarnates remain on the battlefield bonded to friendly units.

Battle Tactics

Intimidate the Invaders

Achieved at the end of the turn if their are more friendly units outside of your territory that there are inside it.

Reprisal

You complete this tactic if an enemy unit that destroyed a friendly general earlier in the Battle is destroyed this turn.

Endless Expopriation

You score this tactic if an enemy bonded endless spell or Incarnate is either bonded to one of your own units, are wild, or the controlling enemy unit has been destroyed.

Magical Dominance

You score this tactic if a friendly wizard was able to cast at least one spell and none of your spells were dispelled or unbound.

Note: This may be easier to score as the game progresses and enemy wizards are destroyed. Or if your enemy chooses an army without any wizards in its list and does not include the Hand-carved Nullstone Icon. It could be a good one to keep for the late game.

Magical Mayhem

Pick 1 enemy unit on the battlefield. You score this tactic, of that unit is destroyed by a spell or endless spell.

Note: One of the few battle tactics that armies without spell casters cannot achieve. Armies such as Fyreslayers or Blades of Khorne will struggle here without an allied wizard.

Bait and Trap

You complete this tactic if two or more friendly units retreated this turn, and two or more friendly units charged this turn.

Led into the Maelstrom

You complete this tactic if 1 or more friendly heroes and 1 or more friendly battleline units made a charge move this turn, and at least one of those units is within 3″ of an enemy unit.

Surround and Destroy

Pick three different friendly units, you complete this tactic at the end of your turn if each unit is within 6″ of different battlefield edges and two or more are outside of your territory.

Conclusions

In general, the battleplans seem to be a lot more fun this season, aside from one or two, which have negative effects on one or two factions, as mentioned below. The battle tactics seem easier thus time around and should mean those without newer tomes published in the last year can still compete.

With the battleplan Power Flux which awards VPs for slaying wizards, I can see the Lumineth being left on the shelf by top-tier players in favour of other armies.

Nighthaunt likewise may not see much play with Every Step is Forward meaning they can’t retreat and contest objectives, and Frigid Zephyr battleplan turning off their ability to fly.

Ossiarch Bonereapers command trait teachings of the tithe-reapers (first spell successfully cast by the general cannot be unbound) just became even better!

Units which could be seeing a lot more play over the next year, may be;

  • Gobsprakk (Kruleboyz)
  • Warsong (Sylvaneth)
  • Gaunt Summoners (Tzeentch)
  • Slaughterpriest (Khorne)
  • Cheapo Screens (all factions)

Joshua Bennett: Good evening, first off I want to congratulate you on your 5-0. You took a slightly different approach with your list than what we are use to seeing. The first big thing is that you went with God Seekers, what was the idea behind that.?

Jeremy Lefebvre: God seekers has enchants I can take at every level that are useful. Command trait that I can use a counter punch. 2 really good artifacts, the gridle for a pile in flying keeper. ( which makes them both aggressive and defense) and the voice box, which can be used to counter a melee heavy army on their big charge then the Extra movement is nice, to get things in a little better spot if needed. The charge reroll reduces the chance of getting screwed on bad charge rolls. one of the games, I failed 4 charges on the first roll ( a 3, 2, 4 and another 3) all of the reroll charges were successful

Josh: There is a lot of debate to whether the Keeper of Secrets is worth her points obviously you feel she is. What is her role in your list?

Jeremy: She didn’t go on a killing rampage, in most of the game she killed very little. but was fat enough to get in the way and grind stuff down. The double fight was very good in the list. It helps give an extra punch to get more DP. I used it with Siggy most of the time, but not all. As it lets him fight first, then fight again right after that (strike first, cancelling out the strike last) the keeper never died, which has to say something. She has served as anvil and pin piece, she often goes to hunt little foot heroes to stomp on.

Joshua: 5-0 aside that is very impressive.

Jeremy: Thanks, it is a fun list, and can be hard to pilot. a lot of the game is in the deployment and how to move it. It’s built to have counters to most types of armies, dunno if you saw when I broke that down in the Team America chat.

Josh: I love the fact that you did not mass include the archers in this list, its great to see other things being used.

Jeremy: Thanks, I feel you want some shooting, the archers are squishy, so requires a different game plan, that is not board control. I don’t find mass archers not fun to play, or play against. Mass archers list have hard counters, and I try to build my list so there is no hard counter, and I can hang in any game

Josh: I love it thank you so much for taking the time to chat with me about this amazing list and good luck with it of your next adventure!

Jeremy: It was a pleasure, looking forward to reading your write up on the list and event.

TOTAL POINTS: 2000/2000

Roland Rivera: Here we have an interesting variant of the typical Legion of Blood Soulblight list. It has the usual power-pinning elements to hold the line in Neferata and a Vampire Lord on Zombie Dragon, both of which can present a 3+ ethereal save, followed by a Ward.

These are surrounded by lots of fast-moving Black Knights, which are fast bodies you can use to occupy space and capture objectives, but are also pretty potent on the charge. This charge potency is amplified by a Wight King on Skeletal Steed, which emits a bubble of rerolling charges and makes their impact hits better. The 10-man units operate more as a hammer and likely stick close to the Wight King, whereas the 5-man units are more expendable.

Last but not least, a Tunnel Master Vampire Lord can achieve some cheeky Battle Tactics by teleporting onto an objective, and is a source of chip damage by casting Spirit Gale. Overall, this is a fast-moving, hard-hitting list that has some staying power thanks to its tough Hero Monsters, and it’s easy to see why it did well, only drawing against the virtual mirror match.

Aaron Newbom: My Idoneth list is designed to be a mobile castle. Combining the turtles +1 to save aura, the Phoenix’s -1 to wound aura, and the kings -1 to hit aura creates a massive debuff zone if you manage to make contact with me. But unlike traditional castles, I am also incredibly mobile.

Leveraging the full force of your army to crack my walls and storm the keep becomes an impossibility (except on realmstone cache 👀) and my ability to explode outwards for heavy burst damage punishes any attempt to do so that fails.

The sharks and fleetmaster exist to allow me to make small plays without breaking up the castle and the score early points.

The Phoenix is amazing in this list because unlike normal armies, your opponent MUST shoot it. And no one wants to shoot the low damage 3+/4+ save unit, resulting in almost no chip damage ever coming through.

Joshua Bennett: Greetings readers, have you ever seen the movie 300? If you have, you know the famous scene where the Persian tells Leonidas that their arrows will block out the sun. Well, if you play against this list, you will fully understand what that statement means.

With 88 blissbarb archers, it sends a total of 160 shots your way. Teamed up with pretenders, it allows three of those units to auto run 6 inches, and since the warscroll allows you to run and shoot, you are looking at a 30-inch threat range for them. Also, they are allowed to all out attack three of those units. So 120 of those shots hitting on 2s and wounding on 3. Which makes them a very reliable source of damage. At rend 1 people almost shrug them off but teamed up with the blissbarb seekers they become rend two and pick up most of anything that they are shooting at.

Oh Be’lakor, this guy does great in mitigating some of the bad matchups by shutting down the units that cause problems. Also, him being a 4 plus save, he can help tank some of the high rend units that might put unwanted pressure on the list. Lord of pain is used to ensure that last unit of blissbarbs and also hitting on twos or negating any negatives to hit and wound. The common trait strength of Godhood also allows him to handle his own in combat. The Crown of Dark Secrets takes an enemy hammer unit and cripples its ability to deal damage by reducing the number of attacks to one. I need to say that again, not reduced by one, reduced to one.

If you think I have to hit this list super hard super fast, I would urge you to really think about how you’re going to do this. Charging into this list is very dangerous due to the fact that pretenders can unleash hell three times. That’s a potential 120 shots into a hammer or 40 shots three times over to three different units. Makes charging this list a little tricky.

Look, this is an amazing list and very similar to the list I personally run. But if you are looking to play something like this, be prepared to have no friends. (i’m just kidding) If you’re playing against this list and it’s bright in the area you are playing, fear not for soon the arrows will black out the sky.

Roland Rivera: Thomas Oliver’s list is a spicy one indeed. While it includes the common elements to most successful Nurgle lists in Bloab and Orghotts as quality Hero Monsters, the Lord of Afflictions as a hard-to-kill disruption piece, and Pusgoyle Blightlords as durable fast-moving frontliners, it is complementing them with some interesting choices in a Sloppity Bilepiper, some Plaguebearers, a reinforced unit of Rotmire Creed, and some Corvus Cabal.

The combination of Sloppity and Plaguebearers is intended to hold opponents in place by engaging enemy units (or forcing them to engage you) in situations where they will find it difficult to bring their full force to bear against the Plaguebearer unit, then using the Sloppity’s ability to disable pile-ins to prevent repositioning. This combination is often seen in Daemon-centric lists, but Mortal-centric lists rarely reach for it, making its inclusion here very interesting.

Units of Rotmire Creed in Blessed Sons Nurgle lists are quite common, but they are usually minimum-sized units whose purpose is to fulfill Battleline requirements cheaply while providing you with shooty screens for your Hero Monsters. This reinforced unit is likely intended to be a dedicated objective sitter that can soften opposing units up with its shooting and potentially put an Unleash Hell or two out there.

Lastly, the Corvus seem to be here in order to provide the same deepstriking nuisance function Nurglings typically serve at enough of a points discount to not make the list go over. Overall, a very interesting list with a solid result to back up its viability.

Alex Tubb: Due to the small roster size and a couple of poor units. Most OBR lists are using variations on the same style of list. I opted for opening up access to as many battle tactics as possible with my list and having no ‘bad’ match ups. Null myriad helps a lot with this. Having close to auto wins VS tzeentch, lumineth, and Seraphon rather than close to auto loses is a big swing. It also really helps VS Soulblight, whose debuffs are crippling for obr.

In terms of enabling battle tactics, I went for 2 GCs, 1 unit of immortis, 2 stalkers and a unit of deathriders. This gives me access to a potential of 5 extra battle tactics.

For me, morghasts are the sleeper unit in the book. Switching off commands within 3″ is unbelievable on a fast-moving hammer. Great for charging without having to worry about unleash hell…

Finally I decided to go for the carrion. I believe OBR’s biggest weakness is scoring objectives. And there are armies who can hold us off objectives for a good few turns before we grind through. Carrion allows us to keep the scoreboard ticking over from the very first turn.
