The Bay Area Open took place in California, USA on 28th and 29th May. It involved 47 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5 game tournament.

Danny: What a weekend it’s been for Stormcast. After taking 1st and 2nd at Misty Mountains, they also took down the Bay Area Open with a slightly different if not hard to parse list.

Three squads of dragons form the super fast, potentially damage-spiking core that, depending on the matchup can pin most of an army in their own deployment, or if the enemy is pesky and sneaky, the big lizzies can just screen out objectives while the rest catches up. The fact they have warblades instead of the lances gives them that flexibility to remain more reliable if they GET charged. An ever reliable MSU bunch of Vindictors form the rear-guard – and with mortals on 6s, 20 of them are no joke – are backed up by a cheap runelord ally for a cheap source of healing. Simple but obviously very effective one-two punch of a list.

Danny: The Sons of Behemat seem to need Kragnos to really punch through the gatekeeper armies these days, and this looks to be the new meta list – 2 gate-breakers for killin’, and a smaller fella for…fitting into the remaining points. I mean, it’s not clever but it is big. Say what you will about their rules design, they’re clearly doing the business even while giving out bonus points for being on priority targets and you better have a plan for this new flavour of them if you don’t want to be caught unawares.

Danny: Coming in at 3rd, having dropped only one game, are the plucky, scaly, bitey lizards. Their Great Plan is a riff on the Celestant-Prime list – a great ally for them due to his ability to either contribute to their overwhelming ranged MW output, OR to hide in the sky and drop down at some point, guarantee a charge (because, y’know, he’s the boss) and put the hurt on something sticky – the kind of targeted missile that Seraphon are otherwise missing. To its credit, it also takes a normal stegadon, who are cool but not actually that great, and it’s at least a nod to the intended theme of the army!

Danny: OBR are not seen as competitive darlings at the moment but those boney bois are the apotheosis of tankiness. Sure they’re a little slow and vulnerable to MW spam (what isn’t?) but much like Nurgle, turns out sitting stubbornly on objectives and scoring points is kinda a big deal.

Arkhan and Katakros are key pieces here, both providing some great warscroll spells, a bevy of buffs and no dearth of debuffs – such as +1 attack, giving out -1 to hit to enemies and healing/bringing back the horrifically survivable 30 and 20 blob of Mortek Guard. I mean, the combined scrolls of Arkhan and Katakros are enough to make you not even want to bother attacking in the first place – and if you do manage to kill any, the Harvester is bringing them back on a 4+ anyway!

It’s a lot to remember and so requires skill to position and sequence correctly – and it’s awesome to see it still getting the job done.

Top Three AoS Lists from Vault Wars 2022

Vault Wars took place in Missouri, USA on 14th and 15th May. It involved 39 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5 game tournament.

Vault Wars differs in that each player takes two lists with so 250 points being changed between the lists. The idea being that each player can choose the list yet think most suits their opponent. For the purpose these top three we will only look at their first lists.

Danny: What have these Nighthaunt players got to prove, with all this big wins on the eve of the new book! Reikenor’s Condemned is an interesting sub-faction that requires a wide variety of units – the tl;dr is that it offers re-roll hits to Chainrasps and Stalkers, can bring even more models back, and gives Stalkers +6″ movement. So it’s a tight list of requirements but offers a lot of utility. With 5 heroes and a Black Coach there’s an awful lot of overlapping synergy going on in general – but a key piece is the Cruciator who buffs the death ward of 6 to a 5 if he inflicts a wound on anything – with 12″ range, 4 attacks 3/3/-2/1 that’s not usually TOO hard. Beware folks – all of this has just got much, much better…

2nd Place – Justin Newman

Justin managed four wins over the two days and lost a fifth. Along the way they beat Fyreslayers/Greyfyrd in round 1, Hedonites of Slaanesh/Lurid Haze in round 2, Soulblight Gravelords/Legion of Blood in round 3, then lost against 1st placed Tom in round 4 before beating Sylvaneth/Gnarlroot in round 5.

Danny: Maggotkin with Befouling Host is emerging as the premier alternative to Drowned Men – Gnarlmaws are pretty darn sweet and offer lots of synergy (and contagion points!) now, so the ability to take 2 offers flexibility. This list is a semi-creative take on the Beast of Nurgle spam list – with two of the funniest characters in the game (who also happen to offer a tonne of buffs and synergy) – Sloppity and Horticulous – and Daemonspew for a nice single-model hammer. Beasts are basically a nightmare to pin down – they can run retreat/charge, put disease points on units they retreat from, and do d3 mortals on a 2+ when they make a charge. You can probably see how the list functions now.

3rd Place – Bryce Wickline

Bryce finished the weekend with one loss and four wins. His path saw him beat Idoneth Deepkin/Nautilar in round 1, Sylvaneth/Gnarlroot in round 2, Maggotkin of Nurgle/Blessed Sons in round 3, Soulblight Gravelords/Legion of Blood in round 4. This was followed by a loss to Idoneth Deepkin/Nautilar in round 5.

Danny: Sons are in an interesting place – they’re still great, but in certain matchups the Priority points they give up handicap more than perhaps is fair. Still, 2 Gate-breakers (the hardest hitting ones) with a 3d6 charge next to big ol’ Chadnos, and a more ‘throwaway’ (it’s all relative with Sons…) Mancrusher offers a nice hierarchy of pain, and kinda gives each warscroll a more dedicated role than the usual 4 big’uns. Sons aren’t going anywhere despite having a big crosshair painting on their enormous butts!

Brendan won three games and lost two, ending his weekend in a very respectful 11th. Along the way he beat Bonesplitterz/Icebone in round 1, then lost against 3rd placed Bryce in round 2. This was followed by wins against Maggotkin of Nurgle/Drowned Men in round 3 Legion of the First Prince in round 4. In the last round he lost against Maggotkin of Nurgle/Befouling.

Danny: Gotta love those plucky murder-trees juicing the old…so very old… book for all its worth. This version revolves (as does any competitive build now) around the Warsong Bomb – that’s what all the endless spells are for essentially, to add cast attempts and extend range for fully loading up on the Warsong’s scroll spell. It also brings two Treelord (and ancient and normal) for save stacking, synergy, and durable monsters, and rounds it off with a killer tree blob – 6 sycthes (great value, good rend) and 3 swords (can spike mortals on 6s to wound) offering play into both hordes and tankier, high save stuff. Doesn’t look like 3-2 is going to be the best this kind of list can do for long – but congrats for the result on hard-mode in the meantime!

So after the failed attempt of deciding a winner the first time around via voting, we’ve decided to reopen the competition to entries.

The winner will be decided by a panel of judges and the winner will receive their choice of start collecting or Combat Patrol box. This is made possible by our generous sponsors at SCN Hobby World.

You’ll have until 31st December to make your submission. As before the rules are as follows;

1) your submission can be any miniature from any games system, as long as;

2) the miniature fits on a 50mm wide base (round or square)

3) One submission per person

4) one of the photographs submitted with the miniature must include it with a note showing the email address of the competitor.

Announcement in regards to the painting competition.

We are extremely sad to announce that due to cheating the competition has been closed and no prize will be issued.

My apologies to those of you who have competed. All your entries were amazing and unfortunately this has been spoilt by one individual who shall remain nameless.

We will however hold another competition soon where a judges panel will be selected in placed of voting.

I’ll be reopening to entries in the next day or so with a closing date of 31st Jan. This time I’ll have the Woehammer guys as judges rather than voting. I’ll automatically include those who entered into the competition.

I know I originally said that I would run this on twitter AND the website, but I’ve decided for greater control the voting ill be done through the website only (this way I can delete multiple votes from the same IP).

Woehammer Staff Painting Competition

So as well as the public painting competition (where you can win a Start Collecting or Combat Patrol box of your choice, courtesy of SCN Hobby World), we’re also running a mini painting competition for those here at Woehammer.

But I need your help! Below are all the entries to our competition (without names to remove any possible bias), I’m going to post a poll on Twitter on which model you think deserves to walk away with prize. But you can also vote on your favourites below which will be added to the scores. Vote for that which brings you joy!

Here are the entries:

Cartoon Pin-Up

This model has had the cartoon or cell-shaded method used on it where the artists has lined in black and then painted the areas between. Pulled off to perfection.

Jakkob Bugman XI

This particular artist has been painting for nearly two years now, but has the skills of someone who has been painting for ten times that long. Take a moment to enjoy the bear in the window on the rear of the back pack.

Imperial Fist Captain

An experienced artist who has put every detail into the model with water effects, zenithal highlighting and weathering. There are so many details to see with this model from the chipping on the black trims around the shoulder pads, to the details on the cloak to the water effects on the boots!

Howling Griffons Captain

Another artist who has been painting for only a couple of years and has gone town with an excellent water effects base and glowing power sword. I love the idea of this Captain leading his troops on some kind of water planet scourging the xenos ahead of them.

Calas Typhus

Another experienced artist who took particular care on the base and weathering and lots of wet blending.

Woeful Brush – Painting Competition

There’s only a week to go with our inaugural painting competition the Woeful Brush, sponsored by our friends at SCN Hobby World.

The winner of the competition will walk away with their choice of Combat Patrol or Start Collecting Box. You still have a week to enter as the closing date for entries is 30th November 2021.

To enter, email at least two pictures of your models to thewoehammer@gmail.com. One picture must contain a note with the email address the submission is coming from, this will prove its your own work and not that of someone else.

  • Your chosen model must be on a base no bigger than 50mm in diameter
  • Only one submission per person
  • The miniature can be from any manufacturer not just Games Workshop

Once the submissions close on the 30th November voting will begin on the website and Twitter. Once the voting is over we will contact the winner to congratulate them and ask them for their choice of start collecting or combat patrol box.

This is just a reminder that we have a painting competition taking place where the winner gets their choice of a Start Collecting or Combat Patrol box. We wouldn’t be able to give away this fantastic prize without the support of our good friends at SCN Hobby World. Why not join their emailing list and receive 25% off Games Workshop products whenever you place an order with them?

To enter you’ll need to paint a miniature with a base size no larger than 50mm and send it’s picture to thewoehammer@gmail.com. you’ll also need to send a small fee of £1 to the same address via PayPal. Your miniature doesn’t even have to be a Games Workshop model, it can be from any range you like.

One of your pictures must include a picture of your email address on a handwritten note. This should prevent people using internet photos for their submissions.

The closing date of the competition is 30th November where submissions will be placed into groupings of four and placed on the Woehammer Twitter account for a poll. The winner of these polls continue into the next round and so on until only one submission remains.

On our YouTube channel we had a series known as A Tale of Painters. However, since life has got in the way a little recently and my time for filming and editing videos is very limited o thought it would be best to continue the series in the blog.

So I’ve included (most) of the Woehammer team below and what they’ve been working on since our last episode.

Since the last episode, Ben has been busy on a number of projects. But perhaps his most impressive in this time is his Bel’akor. Ben has even done some on source lighting to great effect!

Dave

Dave has started a new Ossiarch Bone Repears army, and has given himself a deadline of 3rd October to have them done. His entire army is around 50 models and so far he’s painted one……

As always Ben has been extremely busy, as well as finishing his Seraphon army and attending a few tournaments he’s now decided to build another Kharadron Overlord army, the Ghostlords 2.0!

Liam

Liam hasn’t had as much time as he would like to paint. But saying that he’s now down to fifteen models in his pile of shame. He did manage to paint Ghazghkull:

As always Paul has probably painted around 15 armies in the time since our last episode.

Paul has recently painted a lot of stormcast in order to play Path to Glory in his local gaming club.

This winter we’re holding our first painting competition “Woeful Brush”. The first online painting competition open to everyone.

To enter you’ll need to paint a single miniature to the best of your abilities and submit its pictures to our email address. The maximum base size for a miniature in the competition is 50mm. For example you can paint a single primaris intercessor and place them on any base that is equal to or under 50mm.

Your miniature can be from any game system you wish, even non Games Workshop systems or games.

The Prize, your choice of Start Collecting or Combat Patrol box for either Age of Sigmar or Warhammer 40k

The grand prize is a Start Collecting box or Combat Patrol box of your choice. The prize is being provided by SCN Hobby World who are our sponsor for this event. By signing up to their newsletter on their website you can benefit from up to 25% off the recommended retail price of Games Workshop products.

SCN Hobby World

All submissions to the competition must be made via email to thewoehammer@gmail.com before midnight on 30th November 2021. The picture of your model should be on a plain background and your email address must be included on a piece of paper included in the photograph. We will only be able to accept one submission per person.

We’re also asking for a small entry fee of £1 per entry which will cover postage costs as well as fund future competition prizes, the fee must be paid via PayPal to thewoehammer@gmail.com.

The wider community will then vote for their favourite submission via a series of polls each lasting 24 hours. These polls will take place on this website and on our Twitter and Facebook accounts.

The overall winner will then be announced on 1st January 2022 and will be contacted for their choice of prize.

How to Enter

1) There is a £1 entry fee which should be paid by PayPal to thewoehammer@gmail.com. Proceeds will be used for postage, future events and competitions only.

2) paint a single miniature from any games system you like (yes, non GW games systems are allowed). The miniature must be able to fit on a 50mm base.

3) Take some photos of your miniature and make sue that the email address that you’re submitting the pictures from is shown on a note inside the photo.

4) email your submission to thewoehammer@gmail.com

Rules

1) the competition is open to everyone (apart from Woehammer members).

2) The winner will be determined by community voting on Twitter, Facebook and here on the Woehammer website.

3) Your entry must be a single miniature on a maximum base size of 50mm.

4) Non-Games Workshop miniatures are allowed, but must be limited to the earlier specified base size.

5) bases can be scenic in nature and does not have to be that models specified base (i.e. 32mm for a Space Marine Intercessors)

6) only one submission per person and to be made via email to thewoehammer@gmail.com

7) submissions must be sent to the above address by midnight on 30th November 2021.

8) voting will commence on 1st December in blocks of four entries. All references to the artist of the submission will be removed for voting and to remove popularity influencing.

9) the winning artist will be named upon the final vote on 1st January 2022.

10) Your entry must be your own work and not that of a commission painter.
