Brett Martin: Tom played a fantastic series of games to take the overall win with Stormcast, the first win in a larger GT in quite a while. It’s a very technical army helped by the new tactics, which give Stormcast more of a fighting chance. Heavy ranged mortals that can’t be dispelled from the Knight-Vexillors aren’t a meme – they can weaken a key unit or remove an important buff piece easily.

Vanguard Hunters provide scoring and mobility and the army still have the typical Translocation (on a 3+ for an element of risk). The Knight Zephyros adds more mobility and all up there are 3 dispells and Adtorian Acloytes because it has the Arcane Tome. That’s good coverage into magic armies but the army still isn’t reliant of casting. There are still plenty of threat pieces, Fulminators dropping and charging, Tempestors are strong. Vanguard-Raptors dropping near the Knight Relictor. All staples of Stormcast and still good.

Eschewing the normal minimal drops for a Warlord is a solid move, having 2 Holy Command’s is a reflection of the Stormcast Artefacts and Spells. But in this case gaining double shoot on the Raptors and returning the Liberators adds a lot of flexibilty. That’s this lists stregth, it forces a heavy commitment to remove any one piece but losing one of the hammers won’t cripple the army.

Danny Wadeson: Sylvaneth have been struggling to podium in recent months, with most more recent results coming from pairing Belthanos and Alarielle. Here we have Alarielle on her own – still a capable multi-phase goddess with tonnes of utility. She’s supported by a much heavier shooting base of 6 and 3 bow-noth than usual, relying purely on 2×5 Tree revs for objective capping – and I’m guessing Alarielle was summoning in 3 Sword-noth for some extra melee bodyguards/objective bullies .

And it performed fantastically, losing only to the sheer ranged output of KO, which is hard for any army to deal with. Gratz to Chris for an unusual list that fills the sky with arrows while Queen big-bug runs rampant – sounds like fun.

CORE BATTALIONS:
*Battle Regiment

TOTAL POINTS: (2000/2000)

Roland Rivera: It’s no secret that Slaves to Darkness players rely heavily on Varanguard because of their package of speed, durability, power, and consistency, but this list goes a step further than most and runs 3(!) blobs of 6 VG, one of which contains the General because a 5+ Rally on that kind of beef is a valuable resource indeed.

As you would expect from an army that spends over 80% of its points on 3 potent hammers, the strategy here is highly straightforward; move fast, hit hard, don’t give your opponent much of an opportunity to hit you back. Untamed Beasts give you access to a screen/objective grabber, and the Sorcerer Lords keep you topped up with buffs.

While the strategy of the list is straightforward, and the gameplan can get a bit dicey if your forward rampage gets slowed down, doing so is easier said than done. You need only look to the list’s record for evidence of that.

Bean: When 12 Varanguard just isn’t enough (and frankly, I agree), one is left with a touch choice. Do you look through your tome, hoping to find a spark, something that ignites your list into something more? Maybe some screens, some deep strike, perhaps some utility? Nah, fuck that. Just slap 6 more Varanguard in there and offer your opponent a moment to pray before the game begins. An absolute baller list going 4-1 at the Blood Rite GT, it has everything you need to crush your opponent into truly fearing Archaons legions of scawy horsemen.

Starting off with a Nurgle marked unit of Varanguard as the General, they are -1 to wound in melee (Nurgle mark) and give the Varanguard a 5 up rally (when the command is issued by this unit). Coupled with Ensorcelled Weapons and most likely the hoarfrost from the Chaos Sorcerer Lord giving them 2-3 rend, that’s 30 attacks, 3/3’s, at potentially 3 rend. Absolutely horrific scenes.

Backing them up is 12 more Varanguard, Khorne marked for +1 attack on the charge, and armed with Fellspears for +1 to rend and +1 to wound on the charge. If in doubt, just remember your ABC’s with these guys (always be charging) and you’re golden. 2 Sorcerer lords for some utility, offering a cheeky 6 up ward (on top of the Varanguards already built in 4 up mortal ward) as well as a blizzard threat, some untamed beasts for a sneaky pregame move, dead on 2k points, what more could you want? A deadly list that I personally love, congrats on the 4-1!

Also, did I mention the Varanguard can run and charge? Yeah. Try and run. We dare you.

CORE BATTALIONS:
*Andtorian Acolytes (3+ for magic dice)
**Warlord (additional artifact)

TOTAL POINTS: (2000/2000)

Roland Rivera: It’s always a pleasure to see Meatfist Ogors at the top tables, especially when it’s bringing something new and interesting. This list certainly fits that bill, as it has invested heavily in the new Gorger Mawpacks. These units are roughly comparable to Ogor Gluttons based on the raw warscroll, but they bring some interesting potential utility in that they can shut off commands for units near them, and also threaten to deepstrike into enemy territory. This adds some nice tactical depth to the typical Always-Be-Charging Meatfist lists.

The Mawpacks are complemented by some interesting units. You don’t see Leadbelchers often these days, but they profile well in Meatfist where they have a bit of extra punch on the charge and let Reuben save points for his Mawpacks. Hrothgorn Mantrapper is a similarly uncommon inclusion, which I presume is there for further commitment to the deepstrike threat strategy. Between the 3 Mawpacks and Hrothgorn, I can imagine it would be quite difficult to properly zone this list out on all possible fronts.

Speaking of screens, that’s definitely what the Gnoblars do for this list, which is important because there are quite a few Heroes here that could benefit from being covered for a turn or two, including the Tyrants that are set up for big charges and the casters who purport to buff the team. All in all, this seems like a fun list, and I’ll be interested to see if Mawpacks continue to make a splash going forward.

Wow. Now this is how you go off-meta. There are some stalwarts of the Meatfirst meta present – the Firebelly is pretty much an auto-take these days due to his -1 to hit bubble spell, as is the Slaughtermaster for his potential to hand out +1 to wound to a unit and take blizzard. Tyrants are fairly common too, due to their ability to get to 3s on their MW rolls based on charge dice. There’s also a unit of Gnoblars, who’re still one of the best screens going due to their non-trivial and passive MW output.

From there, it’s all bets are off. Reuben has gone for the cheapest possible battleline fillers of 3x 4 Leadbelchers – who, it should still be noted – are capable of putting out a good amount of ranged chip and screen clearing damage, especially if they don’t move. The points savings have gone entirely on THREE units of Gorger Mawpacks. The new unit on the block, Mawpacks, looks fairly underwhelming and overcosted on paper to me – but there’s always value to a deepstriking unit. Additionally, their warscroll ability to shut down command abilities on a 5+ is per unit, meaning if they were all in range of something, that’s 3 attempts. It’s good utility that becomes a heck of a lot more reliable in a group – and they’re still a wound dense unit with plenty of rend 1, damage 2 attacks after their charge mortals.

Hrothgorn sneaks into the list too as, I imagine, a deepstriking ‘Surround and Destroy’ scorer, rounding out a HIGHLY sneaky and bizarre list that managed to beat two Khorne lists, meaning it’s surely no joke. A huge congrats to Reuben for a 5-0 with a list. I would have called a meme if I hadn’t seen the results!!

CORE BATTALIONS:

TOTAL POINTS: (1990/2000)

Lodivicus: Does the current Jaws of Mork core trend continue? Yes, but with some twists! Almost all of the currently trending core units are here (Skragrott, a Squigboss, Sneaky Snufflers, Squig Herd, Boingrot Bounderz, and the Bad Moon Loonshrine). The list drops the more common Madcap Shaman (with Moonface Mommet and Hoarfrost) and replaces it with the more expensive, but typically more survivable Fungoid Cave Shaman (with a Staff of Sneaky Stealing and Hoarfrost). It also drops the Gobbapalooza entirely from the more ‘meta’ build.

So what are the other twists?

First off, the big one, the Mangler Squigs. While still pretty uncommon, we’re starting to see these appear occasionally. Their ability to jump over front lines (with their Giant Boing! monstrous rampage) and get at key pieces of the opposing army is quite valuable (especially in a GHB season of little wizards). As a behemoth, it is also instrumental in making the list fit into a single battle regiment battalion. While quite effective in the role, Mangler Squigs are fairly expensive points wise. I suspect it would take a small points reduction for this to become a more common choice.

Second, the Boingrot Bounderz are being run as two single reinforced units as opposed to one double reinforced and one (or more) regular units. While likely being a playstyle change as much as anything, it’s noteworthy composition wrinkle as it also contributes to allowing him to play as the 1 drop list.

Third, the inclusion of Stabbas. With so many points tied into his meatball monster, I suspect Brandon includes the Stabbas primarily as objective holders, but could also be used to screen if the matchup dictates it. The -1 hit from Netters can also be hugely valuable in the right circumstances.

Lastly, the most uncommon inclusion in the list is the triumph choice of Bloodthirsty. Indomitable is almost universally the triumph choice in a Gloomspite Gitz list, but playing only 10 points below the limit, I doubt this had much impact.

Congratulations to Brandon on his 3rd place finish, with Big Waaagh being his only loss of the event.

Roland Rivera: Once again, Khorne provides us with a spicy list for us to examine. While the bones of the list are pretty standard for a Daemon-heavy Reapers of Vengeance strategy (Unfettered Fury Bloodthirster, Skarbrand, big blob of Bloodletters, Priests and Invocations, chaff units to generate Blood Tithe), this list has a neat little curveball courtesy of its Ally inclusion. Theddra Skull-Scryer and The Godsworn Hunt give you access to spellcasting, which is a valuable resource indeed.

That said, The Godsworn Hunt is not the only spicy inclusion in this list, as it also features Magore’s Fiends as a bulky chaff unit that can summon another screen in Riptooth. As a final spicy inclusion, Fabien decided to include the Slaughter of Sorcery Grand Strategy, which requires no Wizards to be on the battlefield. Clearly, Fabien intended to use Theddra quite aggressively in the average game.

The combination of having 2 Bloodthirsters and splurging some points into interesting warbands means this list isn’t quite as Wound-dense as your typical Khorne force, but the strong result indicates that the increased utility was worth the trade-off. Well done!

TOTAL POINTS: (1980/2000)

Fresh (for Nurgle!) from being part of England’s victorious 6 Nations team, Max brought his beautifully painted and very pus-filled army to take out War in the Heartlands. And what a difference a few points changes make! The Garden of Nurgle has gone through a bit of a feculent regrowth recently with points drops to a couple of the big chaps and the little chaps, meaning that Max’s list is 80 points cheaper than it would have been before the recent battle scroll update allowing to squeeze even more into the list. In addition, with the double-Gnarlmaw and Befouling Host combo, Max is certainly summoning something in, from a Beast of Nurgle, more Plaguebearers or even a Great Unclean One.

Another great option for Max to bring in is Sloppity Bilepiper who is able to use his Jolly Gutpipes to play such classics as My Love Is Like a Ripe, Ripe Fart that prevents pile-in moves. With the four big Nurgle heroes doing most of the lifting in this list, preventing enemies from getting their maximum number of attacks by piling in while being at their own maximum efficiency is a real force-divider for the opponent.

Of the big boys, Orghotts is probably the most straightforward, but is still an absolute beatstick, with 5 damage 3 and 7 damage 2 attacks with a D6 damage shooting attack thrown in there too. He also comes with a free CP per turn if you want that D6 damage attack to be hitting and wounding on 2s.

Next up is Morbidex Twiceborn, who can bring back Nurgling bases, but what he mainly brings to the party is that at the end of the battleshock phase (so the opponent’s too) he heals half his wounds, rounding up. So get him down to 1 wound in your combat phase to see that go up to 7 wounds, then heal D3 in the opponent’s hero phase followed by a few more at the end of the next battleshock phase. If you can’t kill him in one go, don’t bother, but easier said than done on a 3+ save and 12 wounds on a 5+ ward.

The Great Unclean One is one of the Loci of Fecundity, which means that Nurgle models heal D3 within 14″ of one of these Loci instead of just the 1 wound, helping Morbidex to be the irritant that he is. It also has its own Monstrous Action to do 4 mortals on a 2+ when at top bracket and is no slouch in combat either, especially with all the Nurglings doing a tonne of attacks that can spread disease, which will then proc on a 3+ because of the Witherstave.

The second Locus of Fecundity is The Glottkin on a truly monstrous 27ish wounds, after factoring in the 5+ ward, is a two cast wizard and has one of the coolest named warscroll abilities in Sigmar called Blightkrieg when The Glottkin and another unit can make a charge at the end of the enemy movement phase. Anyone who has faced Khorne knows exactly how powerful this is and being able to give this lump of pustulant flesh any free movement while also stomping something at the other end is fantastic.

Plaguebearers are also in the list and, while they won’t kill much, they are absolutely non-trivial kills themselves as they have 2 wounds, a 5+ ward, can go up to 3 wounds a model with a spell and can return models on a battleshock roll of a 1, which can be enough to tip an objective in Max’s favour…something that I discovered in our Round 5 game, costing me 2 points as the extra Plaguebearer dropped me from Hold 1, Hold 2, Hold More to just Hold 1.

So what did I learn about how the list plays? It is a very tough list and when piloted by someone with Max’s skill expression, a couple of breaks need to go your way to have a shot. There are aspects of a DPS-check army (i.e. can you do enough damage to it before it kills you) that has some similarities with Gargants, but with the extra mechanic of 5+ wards, summoning, the healing and having some really cheap battlelines being able to grab objectives, it’s one of the top armies at the moment. But it was a really fun game and Max is a true gentleman and a worthy winner of the event.

After doing reasonably well with Kruleboyz and Tzeentch, but never cracking that 4-1 wall, I was really chuffed to finally be able to get there at Heartlands in such a great field of opponents. The new Orruk battle tactics have definitely helped Big Waaagh recently and the list is build with these in mind. Sneak Up is a great early or late battle tactics for putting all Kruleboyz units within 3″ of a terrain feature; Dat’s Our Turf Now! just needs two Ironjawz units within 6″ of the centre; the general is a Kruleboyz general, opening up Take Dat You Suckas! for doing 10 wounds and not taking 10 in return; Wait For It, Ladz just needs 30 Waaagh points. If you can do all of these very doable tactics and then get one more from the GHB, often Intimidate the Invaders or Magical Dominance, then you practically have to be tabled not to score 5 battle tactics.

With the general being the Swampcalla to access Take Dat You Suckas!, it made sense to also make him the focus of the Grand Strategy too as the other common option, Waaagh, needs him or a battleline unit to also not only be alive, but in your opponent’s territory too. On a turn-by-turn basis, he’s mostly there to buff the boltboyz, but by putting Merciless Blizzard on him too means that I have a 12″ exclusion zone around him and the Wurrgog has his own 12″ no-go zone too. Speaking of the Wurrgog, he did win me game two by staring off Alarielle the bottom of turn 5, but don’t sleep on his warscroll spell either. It is a ‘roll the number of dice in the unit spell’ but, if cast on a 10+ (and Primals can modify), it does mortals on 4s at 24″ away. That spell took out 18 Blissbarbs of 30 in one hero phase and gives him a bit of extra utility.

Speaking of Primals, I wanted to maximise my number of these so had the Andtorian Acolytes battalion and the Command Ability to get an extra one in my hero phase on a 5+. While sometimes these missed, there were several hero phases when I had 5 Primal Dice ready to go, either for my own casting or for Gobsprakk to do his thing and cause D6 mortals to wizards. Though he didn’t actually take out any wizards at this event, the threat was always there and, with the number of Primal Dice I often had, many opponents just skipped casting magic.

Other honourable mentions go to the Megaboss on Foot with the Destroyer artifact, who has the fight-on-death ability to make him a real thorn in any opponent’s side for the bargain price of 140pts. It allows you to attack elsewhere first, knowing that the Megaboss will definitely get to attack and, if the Megaboss somehow survives, then, unless your opponent shoots him off or kills him with magic (but see Gobsprakk above), he’s going to get to hit again. The other big winner from this list is the point when you hit 20 Waaagh points and have +1 to hit and +1 to wound. Having this on your whole army is spectacularly good, making the output really consistent AND allowing you to use CP for All Out Defense while not reducing the damage.

All my opponents were absolutely fantastic to play, with nailbiting moments in every game and Mark and Liam run a fantastic event with Cameos this year from the Cookie Monster, Admiral Adama and Hodor encouraging us to hold the objectives! If you get a chance, grab a ticket and I’ll hopefully see you next year!

TOTAL POINTS: 2000/2000

Roland Rivera: The Glottkin continues his relentless march over the Mortal Realms, as this is yet another podium result for Nurgle’s favorite triplets in the Befouling Host subfaction for an extra jolt of summoning power. This list has a deep lineup of dance partners for the Glottkin – if you’re looking to lock something down, send in some Plaguebearers within the Sloppity Bilepiper aura to make them unable to pile in. If you’re looking to take them out, send in one of the Maggoth Lords and start swinging.

Another great perk to Befouling Host is getting Beasts of Nurgle as Battleline. These guys fill out your Battleline on the cheap, and also make for an efficient screen/disruption piece. This list also doubles down on the cheap disruption department with the inclusion of a unit of Nurglings, which help you generate contagion points and force your opponent to screen them out.

While many players are doubtless aware of this list’s gameplan by now, knowing is only half the battle, and stopping these servants of the Plague God from owning the middle of the board is easier said than done.

Kieren Coates: The list is a classic skaven list that was built by myself, Jordan (warpfire minis), and Keegan (mechrat) – it’s well balanced with a variety of threats

Between two verminlords, 20 PCB’s, hell pit, blizzard and great plagues it can deliver an incredible amount of damage when required – just make sure to not get hit in the good stuff before you can hit your opponent

For matchups, my first round sadly, my opponent had a medical complication the previous evening and was unable to attend.

Round 2 was into Jeremy’s SBGL with heavy recursion and wolves focus, in which a double turn from two verminlords and a hell pit was able to tear right through the centre to reach the soft heroes which underpin the army

My loss to nurgle was to a glottkin slopidy counter melle list from Lazlo – it has been a while since I’ve played into this variant, and mistakes were made.

As a tip for this matchup, it’s very good at pinning your models into place and preventing piles to get most of your models into range – with this in mind in a counter intuitive manner it’s best to lead the charge in with your buffed up verminlords, and have your hell pit and PCB’s waiting in the back for the next turn after the fight has been engaged

The reason for this is if he is able to countercharge into your clanrats, he can place one model just at 2.9 inches from your hammers, combined with slopidy heavily reducing their damage.

However if this is done to the verminlords, with their 3 inch scythe they can still very easily murder what they are put into, rather than only being able to hit with 2-3 PCB’s and being locked out for the game

Lazlo was a great opponent who went on to get 2nd place, only losing to Nathan’s KO in the final round as his list was not designed to fight mass ranged, and I was glad to see him reaching the podium for a strong run.

Round 4 was Jordan’s mixed KotET with a varanguard and belakhor focus, which was an incredibly tight game with myself being pushed down early, I managed to get one sneaky play of censors with death frenzy through a gnawhole to charge the knights, only to double pile around into the varanguard with death frenzies to keep them in check. realising the only way out was a double turn on 3-4 to wipe the board. Playing under the assumption of it being my only out, I hit the double, which sealed the game

My final game was against Tristan and his Ironjaws where I was forced to go first, and set up my defensive lines (death frenzy, dreaded frenzy, mystic shield, flaming weapon) and scored while sitting as far back as possible

On his turn one, he cleared all my clanrats and left my army exposed

Having won priority, I chose to give it to him despite being exposed as I knew as a true ironjaws player, he would be full sending it – however this was a mistake as he should have moved backwards and waited for my defensive buffs to clear

With everything engaged, he chose to fight first with Mawkrusha with destroyer into verminlord warbringer with mystic shield, finest hour, and all-out defence. Sadly for him, he didn’t kill the verminlord, which was essential as it prevented smashing and bashing, which let my plague censors now hit into his pigs and kill all 6 of them.

The other Mawkrusha and pigs killed my hell pit and some less essential pieces, but it now left them exposed on my turn for blizzard, great plagues, frenzies censors and verminlords to clean up – resulting in a bloodbath that effectively called the game

Gloomspite Gitz Faction Breakdown – December 2023

SUBFACTIONS

Overall, Badsnatchers appears to be the most successful subfaction at GTs with a win rate of 55%, while at the RTT setting, the Glogg’s Megamob appear to be having the stronger run with 59%. Glogg’s, Badsnatchers, and Grimscuttle (only 10 tournament entries) all appear to be the strongest Gitz Subfactions with win rates over 50%. While Trugg’s Troggherd is truly suffering with a combined win rate of only 42%.

Jaws of Mork, while having a win rate of 48%, appear to be the most popular subfaction.

Here we can see that King’s Gitz are the faction with the highest percentage of players who achieve 4+ wins in a GT setting, but also they have the highest positive win ratio (amber and green combined).

Looking at it from an RTT perspective, Glogg’s Megamob replaced the King’s Gitz with the highest % of players going to an RTT and achieving a positive result.

This chart can show a lack of balance via results, if all factions were perfectly balanced (along with player skills) then the opposing bars (i.e. 5-0 and 0-5, 3-2 and 2-3) would be even.

The real difference appears at the 1-4 results point, with a huge 22% finishing with these results compared to an expected 16% if AoS was perfectly balanced.

FACTION MATCHUPS

Note that these stats are across all game formats.

While they have a win rate of 49% overall, interestingly, the number of green matchups are very limited for Gloomspite Gitz, with only Kruleboyz being a favourable matchup for them. Meanwhile, at the other end of the table, there are 3 red matchups (less than 40% win rate) and a further 7 orange matchups (40-44%).

ROUND PERFORMANCE

Gloomspite rounds are all within the 45-55% win bracket with the first three rounds, perhaps leaning towards their opponents.

Roland Rivera: I have long felt that The Goretide was one of the more under-appreciated Khorne subfactions, and the results are starting to back up that feeling, as it has made a few podiums of late. This list has some fun inclusion in Korghos Khul himself, a reinforced unit of Blood Warriors (a rarity in this post-Galletian Veterans world, as they only have 1″ reach), and perhaps the spiciest choice of hammer in 2 reinforced units of Wrathmongers (!).

While it may be odd to see what is generally considered to be a support unit in the hammer role like this, a quick peek at their profile shows there is some merit to the choice. 4 attack per model at 3+/3+/-1/1 base is no joke when combined with Khorne’s plethora of buffs (as an example, this list can provide +1 to hit and +1 Rend with relative ease). While they unfortunately do not get to benefit from each other’s +1 Attacks buff, they are cheap in the points department, and Rally well when combined with the Bloodsecrator.

Last but not least, this list also has a couple of interesting Ally picks in Untamed Beasts and Furies. Both of them make their way up the board quickly, and Furies in particular can force the opponent’s hand in activation order if they want to be rid of them. The innovation potential in Khorne seemingly knows no bounds, and here is yet another example of it.
