This is the perfect list for anyone who is interested in the more “smash and bash” idea of Khorne’s lore. 50 Bloodletters will have a scary amount of damage output, especially in Bloodlords where 1/3 of their swings end in mortal wounds, instead of 1/6, assuming they charged. Taking a double-reinforced block is also not something we see that often in Khorne lists, since the general flavor is to take a single reinforced unit of something (bloodletters, blood warriors, skullcrushers, or skullreapers, generally) and build around what supports that unit.

For support, Shaun has opted for a Blood throne, Bloodmaster, and Bloodsecrator. All three of these units will take the already impressive damage output of 30 bloodletters and turn them up to 11 by adding extra attacks, potentially boosting their wound rolls against an enemy unit, and keeping them alive to fight in the next round.

Shaun has also leaned in to Khorne’s anti-wizardry by bringing along 5 priests, all of which are sporting an extra prayer from the battalion, and across the five every prayer that Khorne has access to is present. This means that positioning that huge block of bloodletters is much easier through Bloodbind and Killer Instinct, boosting their damage output even further with Unholy Flames, and keeping them alive with Bronzed Flesh.

Overall this is an excellent display of how Khorne lists can be built by simply leaning into the things Khorne already want. Pray, spill blood, repeat. Congratulations to Shaun on first place!

And here we have the list that Shaun drew against in the fourth round. You can look between the two and see a lot of similarities, with a couple of notable exceptions.

Scott choose to bring the damage combo of Skarbrand + Boomthirster at the cost of a couple priests and the seond reinforcement on one of the units of bloodletters. Skarbrand’s damage output is appreciable, but it’s taken at the cost of support units for the reinforced bloodletters.

Past those difference my comments stay roughly the same. There is a good reason that these two list found themselves in a draw. Congratulations, Scott, on your second place victory and your 4-1-0.

TRIUMPH: Bloodthirsty

TOTAL: 1990/2000 WOUNDS: 165

Noel Fundora: I do love me some Big Waaagh. The army excels at trading pieces efficiently while scoring proficiently. Making the Swampcalla your general will give you access to the two very easy Kruleboyz battle tactics in Sneak Up and Take Dat, Ya Suckers! Pair that with the very free Big Waaagh tactic of Wait for it Ladz and you’ve already scored 3/5 BTs, meaning you only have to manage 2 from the GHB, which is simple enough with this loadout.

The extra spell enhancement gives your handy wizards great flex picks, made even stronger by the ever important Acolytes Battalion. Gutrippaz will be the cheap battleline option that exists on objectives quite well with their -1 to be hit (against no heroes and monsters). The wall of lads stands in front of the wizards, casting a multitude of damage and debuff spells. Between the Kruleboyz lore, the GHB lore, and the Wurrgog Warscroll Lazer Eyes, this is an immense castle to approach. The piggies and ragerz can scream out from the backline at a moment’s notice to clean up whatever is left standing. The Maw-Grunta is a great inclusion for a cheap monster to trounce around with. With high movement, some run and charge, the Weirdnob teleport, and Mighty Destroyers, those units will get wherever you need them to go.

Big Waaagh is the toolbox of all toolboxes that will give ya what you need for any scenario.

Celefaze: This is one of the most unique Slaanesh lists I’ve ever seen reach a podium placing, and makes expert use of our debuff capabilities and the offensive jank hidden in oft-forgotten Invaders subfaction. The party starts with two units of symbaresh twinsouls that apply -1 to melee attack characteristics to units within 3″, and 2 keepers of secrets with living whips that can each bring that down by a further -1 to a unit within 6″. To make sure all those newly upgraded 2″ reach hordes are kept humble the list then turns it up to 11 with the Lash of Slaanesh spell, capable of applying an uncapped melee attacks penalty (to a minimum of 1) to an unlucky unit within 12″. As if that weren’t excessive enough, the lord of hubris can step in to ensure a unit can only attack him in combat with however many attacks they happen to have left at that point. Offensively this force is deceptively deadly too, with a possible 2 instances of the Hurler of Obscenities command trait (applying +1 to hit and -1 to save for an enemy unit in 6″) thanks to the Escalating Havoc heroic action, and a turn of army-wide +1 to melee attacks from the Icon of Infinite Excess. Bolstered by the Slaaneshi power-couple of Syll’Esske’s conditional +1 to hit and wound, this can make for a brutal offensive push at a key moment. Some additional utility is found in allies and endless spells, with the unmade pinning enemies in place and furies for scoring shenanigans, while the Dreadful Visage provides a rare, almost nostalgic source of strike-last. Juancho deserves praise for not only brewing this strange beast of a list, but piloting it to an undefeated 3rd place.

Hanna Leppänen: This is a fun list! It’s a Hollowmourne list (+1 dmg for knights on charge), but the main attraction  here is the 6 Flayers and the Infernal Courtier.

The list plays rather standard 2 Archreagents and a Gravewarden as the Abhorrants, but does have a nice pick of Varghulf Courtier as the general, with Cruel Taskmaster for maximum muster potential for the killiest Courtier hero. Hoarfrost is the single best spell for FEC due to problems being often lack of rend and hit debuffs. Deranged transformation is of course the best spell in the FEC lore.

Otherwise the list plays around 40 Ghouls and Chalice for tarpitting, 2 x 3 Crypt Horrors for battleline and 2 x 3 Morbhegs for battle tactics and great mobility. Two units of MSU Morbhegs seem to be pretty stable part of FEC lists atm.

Crypt Flayers ww 9″ get +1 damage to their shooting attacks if a Crypt Infernal kills a model with a shooting attack. With a unit of 6 that’s 24 4+/3(2)+ rend 2 dmg 2 shots , which can also give you a battle tactic. They also get damage 2 when they charge due to Hollowmourne trait. Crypt Flayers are often overlooked due to pure stats comparison to horrors, but they are a good flex pick that can carry characters and have really good threat range.

Hollowmourne lists love to fight, and frankly, they need to for NDP generation. This list gives up a bit of the raw power of Horrors for more finesse of Flayers/Morbhegs and tarpitting of the Ghouls.

The Old World: Stats Database

Advertisements

I’ve not had time to update the database this week.

But I’ve included our entire database below, along with a system to filter it so that you can check win rates based on your own parameters.

We have removed players’ lists, as much of the data comes from BCP, and we do not wish to circumvent their subscription system.

The 2nd tab, titled “Tournaments Included” is what drives the stats side of the database.

By using the filters on columns C to H, you can decide which factors you would like to include. Then, once you’ve decided, click the indicator for that tournament in column J to either Y or N.

Tournament Filters
Inclusion Column

Once you’ve decided which tournaments to include or exclude head over to the tab titled “Win Rate Based on Filters”.

At the top, you’ll see a bar where you can either count as a loss of include them as 50% win and 50% loss.

Once that’s done, the table below will automatically populate.

Enjoy! If you did enjoy this, why not join our friendly Discord?

Also, below is a sneak preview of a little something I’m working on…..

Kevin Lathers: This an interesting list in that it makes use of a lot of different Fyreslayer units all together. Functionally it may perform similar to some Vostarg Vulkite-heavy lists but allows for a couple different board control strategies.

To that end, this list will be effecting heavy board control. Vulkites and Hearthguard Berserkers have a lot of wounds on them to burn through, and Shield Vulkites are 40 wounds under a 6+/5+ (with battlesmith) ward that can be rallied on a 4+ and feed the flamekeepers when they die. There’s just a lot of stuff for enemies to have to deal with this.

Furthering this board control is the ability for the Hearthguard Berserker group to split off with the Runefather — with possibly the Doomseeker and Flameseekers (for an extra hero and anti-monstrous actions) — to create one small castle while the Vulkites, Battlesmith, and Flamekeepers create another small castle. This list can split push if need be. That’s very dangerous because opponents can often break one castle, but two? That’s another thing entirely.

On top of this, dealing with these castles, and their high model count, not only causes other stuff to get stronger (via flamekeeper), but leaves opponents open to heavy mortal wound output from the infernoth, flamespitter, and the poleaxe berserkers. It’s notable that flameseekers benefit as well from flamekeepers as Vulkites do, as well.

As a treat, the Auric Hearthguard add a nice little bit of shooting as well as movement reduction on select units which is always good and can even be backbreaking occasionally. Dropping a units move by 2″ can sometimes be a difference maker in an opponent’s plans.

Functionally this list becomes a buzzsaw that can push onto objectives, be hard to remove, and punish opponents for even trying to do it.

Slow-Grow Challenge 2024: Battleline

Advertisements

Back in January, we announced our first slow-grow challenge for the Woehammer community to follow along with.

Each month presents a new challenge. February’s was to build and paint a general for their army along with some lore to accompany them. This month, our Generals had to post their first battleline unit and, if they had the time, some accompanying lore!

Tavendale

Last month, Tavendale posted two Generals for the competition, the first being Heinrich Volkmarsson.

Heinrich Volkmarsson by Tavendale of Norerolls

This month, Heinrich is joined by a unit of Halberdiers:

Heinrich’s Halberdiers

Last month, Tavendale also managed to paint up Zarnak the Accursed, though with time being a precious commodity this month, we’ll have to wait until next month to see the first unit.

Zarnak the Accursed by Tavendale

Popliteal

Previously, Popliteal had given us our first Dragon!

Utheryl the Black by Popliteal from our friendly Discord server
The Covensguard

Fittsy

The first of two Kharadron armies, Fittsy started with Krid Cogbreaker last month.

Krid Cogbreaker by Fittsy

And has followed this up with Red’s Footsloggers, a unit of Arkanauts.

But that’s not all! Fittsy blessed us with an additional battleline this month in the shape of a Gunhauler!

Ian Humpage

Ian started a Kharadron Overlords, much like Fittsy above, but instead started with the famous Drekki Flynt.

Drekki Flynt by Ian Humpage

This month, Drekki is joined by a unit of Thunderers.

Deathcorekiddie

Deathcorekiddie has the only 40k army in the challenge, starting with a Terminator Csptain for his homebrew Space Marine chapter.

First Centurion Antigaius by Deathcorekiddie
Skrappa Goldtoof by Deathcorekiddie

Unfortunately, injury has meant Deathcorekiddie was unable to complete any units this month, but we’re sure they’ll be back with vengeance next month.

Peter Holland

Being a massive fan of the old school RTS games Shadow of the Horned Rat and Dark Omens, I decided I would do two armies, the first based on the Grudgebringer

Commander Morgan Bernhardt by myself

As well as the Grudgebringers, I’ve decided to bring an army of Night Goblins some personality

Kej

Abhorrant Gorewarden by Kej

April’s Challenge

You’ve the start of a budding army! But we need more troops! Perhaps something to give a little ranged threat to the enemy? Or a unit that can scout ahead fast? Build and paint at least 5 models from either a missile or scout type unit (this could be cavalry, or perhaps Giant Eagles for Wood Elves, or a Gyrocopter for Dwarfs?).

Additional: Whose your leaders most hated foe and why? Did they suffer some slight at the enemies’ hands? Was a member of their family brutally mudrered by them?

TOTAL POINTS: 1970/2000

Roland Rivera: Legion of the First Prince is one of the less common Slaves to Darkness subfactions, but one of the most fun ways to leverage its ability to put the Mark of your choice on any Undivided unit is to have a big blob of Chosen. That lets them tap into Slaanesh when they need extra speed via the run & charge command, Nurgle when they’re in a protracted combat, or Khorne when you’ve set up a juicy charge for them. All the while, they have the potential for upgrades via Eye of the Gods rolls, as Legion lets you keep Undivided alongside your second Mark.

The Chosen are surrounded by a mix of the usual suspects and some spicier picks. Be’lakor, 2 Sorcerer Lords, a unit of Furies, and a brick of 20 Nurgle Warriors with the Eroding Icon don’t need much of an introduction, but you don’t often see Knights with the Undivided mark (likely a backup target for the Mark-swapping ability in case the Chosen go down or don’t need it). Eternus is also an interesting addition, likely here due to his synergy with Furies (bonus CP) and to a lesser extent with Be’lakor (makes his revive ability more likely).

Overall, this list managed to successfully walk the line between doing fun things and powerful things, and rewarded its pilot with a strong finish.

Peter Holland: The legend that is Pete Atkinson joins us once more for a guest commentary. Check out his own blog, the awesome PlasticCraic.

Pete Atkinson: I’m putting this one right up there with The Sixth Sense and “No, I am your father“¹: Mancrusher Gargants are suddenly having a moment on top tables, and that is a plot twist I did not see coming.

Brodd’s Stomp always starts with Broddley himself – it actually doesn’t have to, interestingly enough, but it kinda does.  Getting your 40 wound giga-chad with a 5++ ward is serious business and a big part of why we’re even doing this.

The other big thing is picking up terrain – ideally faction terrain – and bouncing it off your opponent’s head.  If that stuff ever gets old, it hasn’t yet.  So the next thing I’m putting in every Stomp list is a Gatebreaker, because that terrain-chuck thing is a shooting attack, so you’re getting extra juice out of any All Out Attack used in the shooting phase – this combos really nicely with that rend -3 damage 4 rock if you can ever hit the 2+ wound roll on one dice (you can’t.  I’m telling you now.  It’s a thing).  Plus Gatebreakers are just really good.

Laura’s GB is loaded up with the circle-healing CT and the 5+ mortal ward artefact for extra DPS funtimes, with Nullstone going on the 3rd Mega for the Unbinds.  History shows that the Icon has won out amongst the Nullstone artefacts, and fair enough too.  Bear in mind that you can put Bless on this fella with Brodd’s prayers, and you can have some kind of ward on all three Megas, which is pretty sweet.

I ran through the merits of Mancrushers vs a 4th Mega at some length when Brodd’s Stomp first came out, and noting that this was old points (so you can fit a little more in the army now), the list I cooked up came out very similar to what Laura is running here:

So I won’t repeat the whole thing again, but the key points are that the babies give Brodd a cheap bodyguard to switch on his ward, and they give you higher quality of life for battle tactics (e.g. dumping a couple of cheap-ish models on board edges for Surround and Destroy).

Speaking of which, quality of life for this army on secondaries is high….very high.  Your AOR tactics include such difficult challenges as “getting onto objectives”, and now the Nullstone gives you another freebie, albeit there’s only so many objectives you can actually take back when you tend to dominate Primaries.  I rate Laura’s choice of Slaughter of Sorcery – with no wizards of her own she’s halfway there, the shooting can add up (it’s not that hard to get within 12″ for this army) and if you face popular armies like Khorne or KO, it’s a straight-up gimme.

One thing that counts against you is the release and popularity of FEC.  Morbheg Knights and Crypto Bros are just a couple more hyper-aggressive combat units stepping into a meta already stuffed with things like Squigs and the laughably broken Plague Censer Bearers.  There are units out there that will smoke Brodd without blinking, so forget about hitting Prios – the biggest element of luck I’d want on my side to steer this army to a podium is a favourable draw.  Let the KO do you a favour and light up the glass hammer trading armies, and there’s not much that can stand in your path.  Damn this makes me want to play the army.

TOTAL POINTS: (1990/2000)

Noel Fundora: This list has the great bones of any good FeC list. 20 Royal Beastflayers with the chalice will ensure that you have an anvil that can sit on a point and not give in. Paired with the passive recursion of the Archregents, those Beastflayers and their multi-wound models are not going anywhere. It also features a brick of 40 ghouls that can also take great advatage of the chalice, while packing a nice punch of a multitude of attacks.

The premier hammer of the list being a 9-block of Horrors will shift most targets, especially with the list being in Hollowmourne for that extra damage on the charge. The number one difficulty for this list will be high save targets, which I am sure were featured in the KO and STD lists that it was defeated by at this event. This can be somewhat mitigated by that ever important Hoarfrost and a cheeky teleporting blizzard from the Gorewarden.
The inclusion of 2×3 Morbhegs will help with easy turn 1 Surround and Destroy as well as offer some dangerously quick hero hunters. The Cruel Taskmaster General will ensure that if that block of Horrors is not eliminated in one foul swoop, it is going to stand back up as dangerous as before. The inclusion of the Acolyte Battalion is key because every spell this list has access to (warscroll and lore) plays a key role in achieving its goals.

Tomb Kings of Khemri (Old World: Conquest)

Advertisements

These rules are designed to be used alongside the Old World: Conquest rules.

Why not join our friendly Discord and help develop the system?

AN EMPIRE OF DUST

Across the arid deserts of Nehekhara, vast legions of skeletal warriors rise from beneath the baking sands to slaughter those who trespass into their domain. It is a lifeless realm of endless dunes, stained red from the blood of savages and barbarians. This is the Land of the Dead, where mummified kings are cursed to rule in perpetual unlife. But it was not always thus.

There was a time when the ancient kingdom of Nehekhara stood as a crown of human civilisation; a golden age when its cities shone with majestic splendour, its armies conquered entire nations and its kings ruled as gods among men. But this realm was razed millennia ago by the treacherous sorcery of the reviled Nagash: in a stroke, the living perished and the dead rose from their tombs.

Death is no barrier to glory for the Tomb Kings however. In unlife, they will see the empire of Nehekhara restored to greatness!

Tomb Kings of Khemri march forth!

CANOPIC JARS

Canopic Jars are a unique resource for the Tomb Kings. Ancient containers filled with arcane energy, Canopic Jars can be collected through Quests and as post-battle loot. To give an extra narrative feel to your campaigns, replace the word gold in the aftermath sequence with Canopic Jars.

INCANTATIONS OF PRESERVATION

Each Tomb King unit when recruited to the roster is considered to have a strong ‘Soul Bind‘, as your campaign progresses this may decrease to a point where the Liche Priests are no longer able to bind souls to the corporeal forms of the unit anymore and they turn to dust.

Rather than following the aftermath sequence for injuries and casualties in section 8.2 you must instead roll on that table below taking into account the modifications listed:

  • +1 If the unit survived the battle
  • +1 If your General survived the battle
  • +1 for each Liche Priest in your army roster
  • -3 if the unit was destroyed in battle

This rule attempts to replicate the incantations that Liche Priests perform to maintain their or their Lords army.

2The unit is lost to the sands of Time as it’s binding is tethered to the Liche Priests of your army. Remove the unit from your Order of Battle.
3-4The unit’s link to your Liche Priests is weakened following the battle. Decrease it’s Soul Bind level. If this results in ‘No Bind’ the unit is lost to the sands of time and you must remove it from your order of battle.

10-11The link to your Liche Priests is strengthened and this unit gains a level of binding.

BINDING STRENGTH

  2. Weak BindThe unit is on the verge of turning to dust.
  3. Effective BindThe Liche Priests still have a good bond with this unit.
  4. Strong Bind The bind between this unit and your Liche Priests is at its strongest.

HEROIC UPGRADES

During your Conquest campaign, you may be able to pick heroic upgrades for your CHARACTERS. A heroic upgrade replaces one type of character with another, more powerful one and represents them becoming a mighty champion in your army. You can pick a heroic upgrade in step 7 of the aftermath sequence. To do so, consult the table below and pick 1 of the eligible options. Each heroic upgrade lists the character entry the CHARACTER will be upgraded to, which unit entry is required, the amount of renown points that CHARACTER must have, and the amount of gold you must spend. Once you have picked a heroic upgrade, replace your CHARACTER’s warscroll on your order of battle with the new one chosen. You can only pick 1 heroic upgrade in each aftermath sequence. If the new unit entry is a type that is limited on your order of battle – for example, if it is a MONSTER – you will need to have increased your order of battle limits to accommodate it before it can be upgraded.

LICHE PRIESTS WIZARD LEVELS AND UPGRADES

Mortuary Priests would still require a Wizards Tower to reach wizard level 2, and an Arcane Nexus to become level 3 and a High Priest. High Priests would still require an upgraded Arcane Nexus to become a level 4 wizard.

RENOWN, SPELLS AND MAGIC ITEMS

When you pick a heroic upgrade for a CHARACTER, they keep their renown points and any spells or magic items that they are still eligible for. If your CHARACTER had any spells or magic items that they are no longer eligible for, they lose them.

QUESTS

QUEST: Quash the Rebels

Mortal defiance is a difficult thing to break, pernicious as it is. Still, it never hurts to remind the living of their place every now and then.

At the end of each Conquest battle, add 1 quest point to the progress section of your quest log if you won a minor victory and add 3 quest points if you won a major victory.

Once you have gained 6 or more quest points, you can fight Conquest battles using the ‘Defend the Temple’ battleplan. If you win a major victory when using that battleplan, you complete this quest. The rewards of completing this quest are listed in the battleplan.

QUEST: DREAD MARK

In battle, hunt down the pretender and extinguish their soul.

You complete this quest if you slay an enemy General in battle.

Once you slay the General, you will receive an additional 10 Canopic Jars.

QUEST: UNDYING LEGIONS

Tomb Kings think little of expending their minions en masse. Occasionally, however, some of these resurrected regiments will attain their own notoriety.

At the end of a Conquest battle, you complete this quest if you won a major victory.

When you complete this quest, in the next Conquest battle you fight against an opponent using a Conquest army, before deployment, you can give each friendly SKELETON WARRIORS and SKELETON ARCHERS unit 1 veteran ability that can only be used in that battle.

QUEST: MASS GRAVES

A Liche Priest who can secure a Necropolis has access to nearly limitless reserves of soldiery.

At the end of a Conquest battle, you complete this quest if you won a major victory, and the model picked to be your general was not slain.

When you complete this quest, in the next Conquest battle you fight against an opponent using a Conquest army, at the end of your movement phase, you can summon 1 unit of 20 SKEKETON WARRIORS or 20 SKELETON ARCHERS and add it to your army. That unit must be set up wholly within 12″ of a friendly LICHE PRIEST and more than 3″ from all enemy units.

BATTLEPLAN: DEFEND THE TEMPLE

QUEST BATTLEPLAN This battleplan is used with the Old World: Conquest battlepack. You can use this battleplan if one player is using a Tomb Kings of Khemri army, has embarked on the ‘Quash the Rebels’ quest, and has earned 6 or more quest points.

THE ARMIES The player on the ‘Quash the Rebels’ quest is the Tomb Kings player and their opponent is the rebel. The Tomb Kings player must use a Tomb Kings army.

TERRAIN Place terrain as described on page 268 of the core rules. The Tomb King player has a suitable piece of terrain to represent their Temple in the center of their territory.

DEPLOYMENT Both players set up their units as shown on the map below and more than 9″ away from the centre of the battlefield. Players deploy their armies using the alternating units method, as described on page 285 of the core rules.

FIRST TURN The rebels takes the first turn in the first battle round.

HATEFUL DESPERATION For this battle the Rebels are Immune to Psychology.

TEARING DOWN THE TEMPLE
Units in the rebel’s army treat the Temple as an enemy model and can attack it with melee weapons (it is not affected by spells). The Temple is considered to have a Toughness characteristic of 8, Wounds characteristic of 20 and a Save characteristic of 3+.

A unit in the rebel’s army cannot target the Temple if that unit is within 3″ of any units in the Tomb Kings of Khemri player’s army. Once the number of wounds allocated to the Temple equals its Wounds characteristic, it is destroyed and removed from play.

GAME LENGTH The battle will last for six rounds, until one side concedes, or until the time limit agreed by the players is reached, as described on page 286 of the core rules.

GLORIOUS VICTORY If the Temple is destroyed, the rebel wins a major victory.

If the Temple has not been destroyed and there are no units in the rebel’s army within 3″ of it at the end of the battle, the Tomb Kings of Khemri player wins a major victory.

If neither player has won a major victory, each player scores a number of victory points equal to the combined Wounds characteristics of all friendly models within 6″ of the Temple. The player with the most victory points wins a minor victory. If neither player has the most victory points, the battle is a draw.

CONQUEST REWARDS If the Tomb Kings of Khemri player wins a major victory, they complete the ‘Quash the Rebels’ quest, gain 10 Canopic Jars (Gold) and can make 2 exploration rolls in step 6 of the aftermath sequence of that battle instead of 1.
