Warhammer 40k January Balance Dataslate

Winners and Losers

Introduction

It’s a little late and much anticipated, but in the middle of the night (for me), Games Workshop finally gave us their latest take on the 40k meta and how it needs adjustment. Overwhelmingly, this is a dataslate of nerfs. Very little gets buffed. Before we go too far, we need to acknowledge that the 40k balance is amongst the best it’s ever been. GW’s own data shows that only 2 factions are outside of the 45% – 55% win rate band (Aeldari and Necron). 5 factions are at the bottom (45%), though:

  •  Imperial Knights
  • Tyranids
  • Astra Militarum
  • Drukhari
  • Blood Angels

I question the data, but Drukhari and Daemons (not on that list) are really struggling. Tyranids are extremely player dependent on both top and bottom tables at recent events.

I am going to concentrate on the dataslate and factions within it and mention the points when it’s important. Some factions like Tau haven’t seen any attention outside of points, and I haven’t delved into them. These are my opinions, I might be very wrong. If you think I am, I’d love to hear your thoughts. And we can see if I’m right in 3 months’ time.

Dataslate

Big Winners – These are the standouts

Custodes
No doubt about it, winners.
They get an additional model in Custodian Warden and Vexila Praetor units and keep their 4+ Inv (Invulnerable save) 4+ FNP (feel no pain). And the FNP works on Devastating Wounds.
They are going to be very strong, possibly top 5, and at least A Tier again.

Drukhari
A new detachment – Skysplinter Assault – that is going to grant a lot of movement and cover to very soft units. Combined with combat buffs (+ 1 AP when empowered) and the Archon joining Incubi Druhkari melee is back. A bit anyway. Dark Lances and Heat Lances remain strong. It remains to be seen if it’s enough to get them over the top, but expect them to be a real threat.

Necrons
A 3 month reprieve, no rule or point changes. Expect Necrons to be a problem with other top factions being nerfed.

Winners – At least you got something right?

Blood Angels – Blood Rite Detachment
Plus 2 Strength and 1 attack to melee weapons might not sound like a lot, but it gets a lot of units past breakpoints like Toughness 4 and Toughness 9. Potentially wounding on 2s (with a stratagem) sounds pretty good. No points changes but they may be competitive in Blood Rite.

Grey Knights
The Grand Master has ignore modifiers again – he’s going back into the list and DreadKnights got buffs to shooting (S10 -2AP 3 Damage ignores cover) and melee (Weapon Skill either 3+ with the S14 hammer or 2+ with the Sword). It’s not a huge buff but should potentially see a surge in play and success.

Black Templars – Gladius Detachment
This is looking very strong with Primaris Crusaders and Sword Brethren not being touched. It may be the best army in the game.

Space Wolves
Their sagas can be completed at the end of each players turn. You probably still won’t play the ‘Deeds Worthy of Saga’ detachment, but it is more likely to help now. Small buff (they are still good in other detachments).

Chaos Daemons
No rules changes but so many points drops which is what they really need. Certain to climb the list. Khorne daemons offer some real output. One to watch.

Chaos Knights
Points down on all of their big Knights and only Brigands going up 10 points.

Neutral

Death Watch
Still nerfed

Thousand Sons
Nothing happening here

Astra Militarum
Clarification of orders, but Manticores took a hit

Genestealer Cults
Nothing, no points, and no rules. This is a sleeper, expensive, and not easy to play they have very strong rules in the index.

Nerfs – These factions are feeling some pain

Imperial Knights
Clarified an earlier ruling, didn’t extend bondsman. Very small buffs probably leave them borderline between nerf and neutral.

Adeptus Sororitas
This may actually be a winner in disguise. A very strong strategy has been limited on the Triumph, and they’ve had points increases. But at the same time, there are a lot of drops, so Paragons, Repentia, and Retributors are now more viable. They’ll continue to push on to the top tables.

Death Guard
Less free grenades and points rise on Plague Burst Crawlers and Plague Marines will hurt current lists. It’s more that it will change the lists/play more than make them much weaker.

Space Marines
Overall, their best generic units have taken a solid hit (Aggressors, Inceptors, and Centurions). Some chapters (Black Templars) took solid hits to points but are still strong. Overall, this is a small nerf.

Tyranids
Already struggling, their best units have all had points increases. It’s a nerf, not a big one, but it’s still a nerf.

Adeptus Mechanicus
The codex is a miss, and they needed help, GW decided that they want more data (I think) before adjusting the most recent codexes. That’s great for Necrons and less so for Ad Mech.

World Eaters
Their best enhancement is stripped back, and points increase to the most effective units. It exposes the lack of units and balance in the army. They are still strong and difficult to manage, but they didn’t have a lot of units on the table, and now they will have less.

Biggest Losers – these might sting a little

Aeldari
Less fate dice overall, Fate’s Messenger rerolls only affect the bearer (this is a big change), Phantasm has more restrictions, Night Spinner changed to a -2 to move, advance and charge, Yncrne can only teleport and charge in your turn and Wraithguard can only shoot the unit that shot them. Only Night Spinners and Wraithguards have had a points increase.
This might seem like a lot, but the Yncrne is still very effective at influencing your opponents game, Night Spinners might have a buff. They didn’t affect charges before, and this is huge. Phantasm is harder to use but still going to be an issue. Weakened, yes, but this is still a very good army.

Chaos Space MarinesHammer Time
Embarked units must have the same mark as the Transport, Dark Obscuration now they only have to be within 18”, Profane Zeal only gives reroll wounds, only available to a unit with the Undivided Mark and Accursed Cultists are dead.

Accursed Cultists can only return models in your command phase and are OC1. They are hard to build, move, or use. Never really popular. They are probably on the shelf with a 40pt hike. Forgefiends, Chaos Lord, Chosen, Warp Talons, and Obliterators all went up between 10 and 30 for minimum unit sizes. But that’s not all, Daemons are a lot harder to include. You must have a battleline unit for each non-battleline unit you  include. No more Blue Scribes, Changeling, or Syll’esske.

CSM is going to be a lot weaker, maybe even just an average army with these changes.

Warhammer 40k Battleforce Boxes 2023 – How much and whats in them?

Advertisements

Battleforce boxes are back after their success in 2020, 2021 & 2022. These are a fantastic way to get into a new army or even add to an existing one, but whats inside them and how many points of miniatures do you get?

Well Warhammer Community have announced that they are coming back for 2023!

(If you’re looking for the 2023 – Age of Sigmar – it is on it’s here!!)

Prices in 2022 were around £130 each so hopefully they haven’t increased much – we’ll let you know as soon as we have the RRP! In the meantime I thought our readers would like to know the value of the toys… so see below against each box:

Battleforce BoxsetCostRRP
Votann – Defenders of the Ancestors£237.50£140.00 (Est)
Orks – Beast Snagga Stampede£220.00£140.00 (Est)
Astra Militarum – Cadian Defence Force£207.50£140.00 (Est)
Space Marines – Spearhead Force£197.50£140.00 (Est)
Tyranids – Onslaught Swarm£200.00£140.00 (Est)
World Eaters – Exalted of the Red Angel£215.00£140.00 (Est)

There’s a range of value in each box with the starter set armies (Space Marines & Tyranids) having the lowest value… but who doesn’t love big guys with wings / jump packs! With their own Primarch leading their box it is no surprise that the World Eaters box has the most points in it.

But I can tell you a way of saving even more money by purchasing these at 20% off the recommended retail price! Just visit SCN Hobby World and sign up to their mailing list for 20% off all GW products and 20% Warlord Games products.

Alternatively, if you regularly use Element Games, you can pick them up there… using our affiliate link (for which we receive a small contribution to the site)

So what do you get inside and how much would it cost you normally? All of the points have been given for the basic unit options and include no upgrades, but you can make changes with the way some models are built.

If you’re in the UK you can get everything you need through our affiliate Element Games. Through Games Workshop this army would cost £322.50, but via element Games you’re saving over £40.

If you’re in the US, you can save roughly the same amount via our US affiliate Not Just Gamin’..

Big Mek in Mega Armour

Credit: Games Workshop

We’ve dropped the original Warboss in Mega Armour that came with the Combat Patrol in favour of the Big Mek in Mega Armour. Why? Have a quick look at some of his abilities, then take a look at those Meganobz we’ve included.

Courtesy of Games Workshop

So he can sit with Meganobz, and while he’s with them, he’ll give them a 4+ invulnerable save to ranged attacks. On top of that, once per game, he can bring back 1 Meganob in each of your command phases.

Thanks to the grot oiler, you can also heal back D3 wounds to the Mek once per game.

This fella can do a fair amount of damage himself when you give him either a killsaw or a power klaw. The latter is the more reliable option. He’ll rip through those beakie boys with no problem.

Warboss

We’ve got two of these to go with each of our units of Boyz. These are great with our Boyz as these fellas five them a +1 to hit on their melee weapons.

Plus, they are no slouches in combat themselves. Just the Big Choppa along comes with 5 attacks hitting on 2’s at strength 8, -1 arour penetration, and 2 damage each. But call a Waaagh! when they’re both in combat, and you’ll be adding another four attacks to that profile, and that’s all thanks to their ability ‘Da Biggest and Da Best‘! They have a 4+ save and a 5+ invulnerable save as well, so take a little bit of focus to get shifted from the board.

Meganobz

With a 2+ save and toughness 6, these boyz can soak up a fair amount of damage, then add to that the Big Mek who’ll give them a 4+ invulnerable to ranged attacks. They become a force to be reckoned with!

They’ll be equipped with Killsaws or Power Klaws, with high strength and high rend they’ll rip through most enemy units without too much difficulty. You’ll find they’ll be a big target for your opponent. Which is fine, as long as they’re trying to kill them your other Boyz can roam around take objectives and do their thing.

Boyz

Ork boyz are toughness 5 and two wounds each with a 5+ save, which isn’t too shabby, but to be on the safe side, we’ve put all out units in Trukks for a little more protection and to get them round the board a little faster.

Hopefully, your opponent will focus on ridding themselves of the Meganobz and don’t feel too worried about the Boyz. Giving you a chance to get them into combat and start krumpin’.

A standard choppa on a boy is 3 attacks, 2+ to hit (thanks to having a Warboss attached to the unit) and strength 4. The volume of attacks from 10 boyz will rid you of roughly three of Marines in combat. Calling a a Waaagh before you start krumpin will give them an extra attack and an extra pip of strength as well, meaning the three dead marines we had earlier increases to five or maybe even six! You could even spend a command point on Unbridled Carnage, meaning every 5+ hit roll scores a critical hit.

If they’re going up against a particularly deadly opponent in the combat phase, perhaps spend a couple of command points on Orks is Never Beaten, this will allow your Orks to essentially still make their attacks against that unit, even if they die!

Don’t forget, when you call the Waaagh, you’ll be benefitting from a 5+ invulnerable save as well.

To make them even tougher in combat why not spend a command point and give them the stratagem ‘Ard as Nails? With that, the opponent will have to deduct one from their wound rolls when attacking them.

Trukk

We’ve three of these for each combat group. Give them a wrecking ball for the funsies. 10 Wounds and toughness 8 with a 4+ save and 6+ invulnerable. They won’t survive focused fire, but they’ll do, especially when they’re only 50 points.

If it does get destroyed while carrying your precious boyz into battle, you could spend a CP on Careen! The Trukk can make a normal or fall back move before the boyz inside make an emergency disembarkation, meaning you could get them even closer to the enemy before the Trukk is destroyed.

Deffkoptas

These are perfect to take pot shots at the enemy and harass them as they move around the board. The kopta rokkits are not bad, but don’t expect them to do too much damage. They’ll be great for picking wounds off units from a far or for popping wounds off light vehicles.

With Deff from Above, you can select one enemy unit you flew over that turn as well and roll 1d6 for each model in the unit. On a 4+ they’ll get a mortal wound.

Deff Dread

This boy won’t be able to keep up with the rest of your force, but he’ll be good to protect the backline objectives from anyone who’s foolish enough to stray to close. I’d be tempted to give it a couple of Rokkit Launcha’s so that it can join in the fun from afar and pick wounds off some of the tougher units in the enemy force.

Top Three 40k Lists for the Onerahi Open (10th Edition)

This is the top three 40k lists for the Onerahi Open that took place in New Zealand on the 1st and 2nd of July. It involved 23 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5-game tournament.

As we head into 10th edition and beyond we wanted to start providing a source for lists that are being used successfully in tournaments around the world. The size of the 40k community and the sheer number of events means we won’t be commenting.

However, if you think you have what it takes to comment on 40k lists, we want to hear from you! Simply reach out to Peter on the Woehammer Discord.

Before I jump into the Top Three Lists, I wanted to remind everyone of our friendly Discord server where you can join in the conversation with the Woehammer crew and suggest articles or series for the website.

If you like what we’re doing, why not join our Patreon and help keep it going?

Also if there’s a one day or two day tournament you’d like us to cover drop us a comment on this post and we’ll have a look at it for you.

Warhammer 40k Battleforce Boxes 2022 – How much and whats in them?

Advertisements

Declan (2023) – if you came here looking for 2023 boxes, their article is here!

Battleforce boxes are back after their success in 2020 & 2021. These are a fantastic way to get into a new army or even add to an existing one, but whats inside them and how many points of miniatures do you get?

Well Warhammer Community have announced that they are coming back for 2022!

(If you’re looking for the 2022 – Age of Sigmar – information its here)

Prices have been confirmed for the AoS boxes to be £130, so I wouldn’t expect 40k to be different – Peter. In the meantime I thought our readers would like to know the value of the toys… so see below against each box:

Battleforce BoxsetCostRRP
Adepta Sororitas – Sanctorum Guard£191.00£130
Adeptus Custodes – Watchers of the Gate£202.50£130
Adeptus Mechanicus – Elimination Maniple£184.50£130
Imperial Knights – Chainbreaker Lance£205.00£130
Death Guard – Council of the Death Lord£196.00£130
Thousand Sons – Court of the Crimson King£201.00£130
Imperial Fists – Bastion Strike Force£194.50£130
Raven Guard – Ravenstrike Battleforce£195.50£130

A very similar value in each box, although the Death Guard one is very tempting… don’t tell Sanguinius!

But I can tell you a way of saving even more money by purchasing these at 25% off the recommended retail price! Just visit SCN Hobby World and sign up to their mailing list for 25% off all GW products and 20% Warlord Games products.

Combat Patrol: Orks – Beginners 1,000 Point Army

Advertisements

Following the success of the first two articles in this series on the Sisters of Battle and the Blood Angels, I decided to write another, this time on everyone’s favourite xenos, the Orks. So like the last two lists our only rule is that we have to start with the Combat Patrol box and then build this up to 1,000 points that will hopefully prove to be a fun introduction to what I think is the most characterful of xenos armies.

The combat patrol box is packed with goodies and like the other factions they’re a fantastic way to start a new army as they often give you a wide range of units.

Combat Patrol: Orks

In the Orks Combat Patrol box you’re given;

  • Ork Warboss in Mega Amour
  • 20x Ork Boyz
  • 3x Deffkoptas
  • 1x Deff Dread

All of that for £85, which is bought separately would cost roughly £150.

On top of this we’ll add the following units;

This will cost you an additional £168, alongside the cost of the Codex (£30) the entire army will set you back £283!

However! If you sign up for SCN Hobbies mailing list you’ll receive 25% off Games Workshops recommended retail price and 15% off web only miniatures. Meaning including postage the army and codex would cost £220! That’s a saving of just over £60!

To sign up to the SCN Hobbies mailing list, email Sarah on scnhobbyworld@outlook.com.

This combat patrol can be used as a basis for virtually any of the Ork klans, so today we’re just going to make a generic list that should be suitable for anyone (though Evil Sunz and Deathskullz are likely to gain more out of it).

The list above brings us with upgrades to 1,000 points and the list will be as follows;

WARBOSS IN MEGA ARMOUR

This chap is truly a beast! 5 attacks in melee, hitting on 2+ at strength 9, this dude can hit marines on 2+ and then wound them on 2+ giving them only a 6+ chance to save. Flat two damage means he’ll likely kill at least three marines in combat.

On top of that if you make sure your boyz are within 6″ of him, when in combat they’ll benefit from a +1 on their hit rolls in combat.

Give him the Trukkboyz Specialist mob rule, it’ll mean he can disembark even if the Trukk makes a normal move and it’ll add +1 to his ranged attacks hit roll while shooting from the trukk.

With Tellyporta, you also have the option of setting him up in reserve and bringing him on later…. But perhaps consider saving this for a unit we’ll look at later.

WEIRDBOY

While not bad in combat himself, this guys true power comes from his Waaagh Powers. Equip him with Da Jump and you’ll be able to move any of your core units such as your Boyz anywhere on the battlefield 9″ away from the enemy, and considering we’ve gone for a fast list which should be charging up to the enemy as quickly as possible, this power ties in perfectly with that.

Your second power could be Da Krunch which if any enemy units stray to close to the Weirdboy he’ll be able to roll a D6 for each model causing mortals on 6’s.

BOYZ

Your common Ork is a CC specialist and in our army where speed and being in the enemies grill is top priority these boyz will do you proud. With two attacks base increasing to three due to their Choppas a single unit of 10 can push out 31 attacks in close combat which hit on 3’s (or 2’s if near your Warboss). If you choose to run your army as Goffs then these boyz will score additional hits on unmodified hit rolls of 5+ instead of 6+ if you use the Unbridled Carnage stratagem for 2CP.

Either place them in your Trukk and give them the Trukkboyz specialist mob rule, and then bomb them up the field or have them sit with your Weirdboy who can Da Jump them near to their target.

MEGANOBZ

This unit with their Power Klaws mean they can chew through a lot of the enemies heavy armour. With Strength 10 in combat and AP-3 with flat 2 damage throw them against tanks and watch them krump.

You can increase this damage to three with the stratagem Hit ‘Em Harder, which if you take averages into account means you should be causing 9 wounds to things like Space Marine Rhinos and the like.

Again, because their Core, if they’re within 6″ of the Warboss they’ll gain a +1 on their to hit roll in combat meaning that you negate the -1 to hit for having power klaws.

You can equip these with a Tellyporta as well should you wish, allowing you to deploy them anywhere 9″ away from the enemy,

DEFF KOPTAS

These boyz are fast with a movement of 14″ they close towards enemy tanks fire their rockets and cause some serious damage early in the game. Their rockets are 24″ range with 2D3 shots, strength 8 and AP-2, doing D3 damage per hit. Great for taking out heavier infantry from further away and staying out of range of the enemies small arms fire. Also can be used to quickly claim any objectives should the need arise. lend themselves perfectly to our fast moving army, giving it some punch from further away.

If they do get caught in combat, each Kopta will be able make 6 attacks thanks to its Spinnin’ blades. However, they’re only hitting on 3’s and hit at strength 5, -1AP and doing 1 damage each. Try and avoid combat with them unless you feel confident you can win.

With Swoopin’ Down these boys can also be set up off the table before the game begins coming down in a movement phase at least 9″ away from the enemy. Good for dropping in and using the rockets to blast away at a valuable target.

If you choose Speed Freaks then there’s various options of stratagems for these as well with possibly the best being Attack Out O’ Da Sun, allowing them to be removed at the end of the turn for 2CP and placed anywhere on the battlefield 9″ away from the enemy in your next movement phase. This also effectively removes the chance for the enemy to shoot and target them for a turn.

WARBIKERS

Warbikers are a great all round unit for shooting and combat. With each bike having two Dakkaguns they have the potential to kick out 25 shots for the five bikes if they’re within 9″ of the enemy. Even if they’re not they’ll still be able to shoot 15 times! Great for taking out lightly armed units such as Guard.

In combat the Warbikers will make two attacks each (three attacks each if they have Choppas)though don’t expect them to cause too much damage unless you have taken them as Speed Freaks.

This unit is ideal for harassing the enemy and taking wounds off here and there.

DEFF DREAD

This guy can really be turned into a CC beast, and you’ve got two of them to play with! Give them both four Dread Klaws and they’ll generate seven attacks each in melee. These are at Strength 10, -3 AP and doing 3 damage each. They’ll chew through most things the enemy can put up against them.

They’re tough as well with toughness 7, 8 wounds each and a 3+ save, the enemy will need to pour some time and effort into getting rid of these, meaning they’re not shooting at your boyz or meganobz……

when you do charge with these make sure to use Ramming Speed for 2CP as it’ll give 3D6 for your charge roll and on a 2+ cause D3 mortal wounds to an enemy within engagement range.

To get them up the field really quick, keep the deff dreads in reserve and then use the Tellyporta stratagem that we discussed earlier and all they’ll be able to deploy 9″ away from an enemy in the movement phase. That’ll terrify most players.

TRUKK

The trusty Ork Trukk, place one of your units of boyz in here and they’ll be able to shoot from it as its open topped. It’ll be able to take 12 infantry models or one unit of ten boyz and your Warboss…. just to get them up the field quicker.

Remember that the Trukk is Ramshackle as well meaning anything up to strength 7 that targets it will have to subtract one from its damage characteristic.

OTHER POINTS

If you like close combat, then this army list is for you. It’s ideally suited to get up the table quickly and charging as soon as possible. Be as aggressive as possible with this list and you should have a lot of fun.

WHERE NEXT?

The sky’s the limit. Which Kultur do you want to go with, Evil Sunz? Get more vehicles. Goffs? Get more boyz. Deathskulls? Get some lootas.

I hope you enjoyed this, please let me know in the comments below how you would build a 1,000 point list from the Combat Patrol Box and why not also let me know what you think to my list. There may well be aspects of the codex or units that I have not included that you think should be, so why not let us know in the comments below.
