Top Three AoS Lists for Cryhammer

This is the Top Three AoS Lists for the Cryhammer that took place near Warsaw, Poland on 24th and 25th September. It involved 30 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5 game tournament.

Brett: Starting off with a Seraphon, Thunder Lizard, and most of the big hitters from Seraphon. A spell heavy list (with Kroak), supported by an Astrolith Bearer, Engine of the Gods, Skink Priest and Starseer. This gives 5 casts and Kroak knows the entire Lore of Celestial Domination. The general (Engine of the Gods) has all of the mandatory traits and artefacts for Thunder Lizard (which gives +2 wounds to all of the beasts) granting +1 attack and a shooting attack (D3 MW on a 3-4 and D6 on a 5-6). The skinks are mostly here as screens but enjoy buffs from the Priests (including Engine of the Gods) improving their saves, hit rolls and potentially number of attacks).

The Bastildons are the combat arm of this list. With a Solar Engine and 2 x Ark of Sotek that are really only vulnerable to Mortal Wounds in their top bracket and many many attacks. Mortal Wounds on 6s and buffs from Kroak, the Priests and Starpriest just to make them harder to deal with. The list hasn’t changed much (if at all) since the Battletome dropped in 2nd edition. Skinks screen the bigger units as they more up, Saurus Guard as bodyguards for the wizards and ranged offence from wizards (minor) and the Solar Engine. Eventually the Arks will charge your line. All the while they are scoring points with their mobility and summoning.

It doesn’t sound like much but they stopped a Sons list in it’s tracks and took a host of dragons on (and won) so the output is there to.

Brett: Stormcast are always a chance to podium even if they aren’t the most powerful faction they do have some really strong options (Drakes). Their durability combines with medium output to make them a difficult opponent much of the time. Classic leader choices in the Lord Castellant and Relictor with the Relictor as the general. The Castellant’s lantern providing either a +1 to save or mortal wounds is why you take him (and his 8 wounds). The Relictor has High Priest (reroll chants), Mirrorshield to prevent ranged attacks and Translocation. He has a natural +1 to chants so doesn’t really need High Priest but if you want to make sure of a heal then it’s important. Translocate is useful to move a Galletian Veteran unit to somewhere unoccupied. Or some bowmen, 18″ range means they often need that little bit of help and they are GV in anycase.

The Judicator’s with Boltstorm are becoming very popular, they get 2 hits for every successful to hit roll. It’s very feasible to have more hits than your roll and they wound on a 3+. No rend though. Unusually Lukasz took Call for Aid to return the Liberators if they are destroyed not Thunderbolt Volley for double shooting. There is a very big hammer in the 4 drakes, their breath attacks are potentially devastating (if unreliable) and combined generate 39 rend 1 and 2 attacks. They are also 36 wounds with a 3+ save, hard to get rid of. Perhaps a bit unusual is the number of chariots, 3. There is a battle report from Measured Gamine with 5 though.

The Stormstrike Chariot is a bit of a sleeper, very fast with 12 wounds it does MW on a 4+ based on it’s charge roll. More of a blocker than a destroyer but if all 3 charge on average that’s 10 mortal wounds. The most damaging part of their attacks are the Gryphons towing the chariot, 6 attacks at rend 2. There’s no doubt this is a good list but Lukasz still played very well to take down Sons and KO armies before losing in the last round to the eventual winner. Since the chariots are a great counter to Bastildons I’d say the Skinks screened well.

Brett: Resurgent Sons on the podium again, following the now familiar 3 x Megas and an Incarnate. The Fierce Loathing is Idiots with Flags, not seen as often as Bossy Pants maybe but really good if you have a lot of elite (Stormcast etc) opponents. The General is Monstrously Tough (40 wounds not 35) and has the Amulet of Destiny for a 6+ ward. The extra artefact is Manticore Venom for +1 to wound rolls, frightening on the Gatebreaker’s Flail. The Krondspine provides some protection against Endless Spells with no casting, that alone is a reason for Sons to look favourably on it. It also lets you take 3 Gatebreakers instead of 2 with 2 Warstompers, a solid upgrade.

Losing only the mirror match, which probably came down to priorities, Jack stomped (pun intended) all of his opponents including the durable Nurgle on his way to 3rd.

Brett: Mix of the familiar and the new in this Sylvaneth list. The Leaders (Warsong and Arch Revenants with Spirit of Durthu) are among the most common. The Warsong is creating and using Wyldwoods as spell portals and can cause serious harm with her Swarm of Spites. Durthu has the Greenwood Gladius for additional attacks. The Arch-Revenant gives +1 to wound to the Kurnoth Hunters, great with the 3 rend Scythes. The less familiar elements are the new Gossamid Archers and the Revenant Seekers. Of course the Seekers will stay close to the Kurnoth to return slain models if necessary. The Gossamid Archers can retreat 12″ after they unleash Hell. With no rend that’s not as bad as it sounds (hitting on 4+) but 6s do D3 Mortal Wounds.

With only 2 casts this isn’t a heavy magic list and relies on the Kurnoth and Durthu for most of their threat on top of the Warsong’s mortal wound output. His 2 losses, against Kharadron Overlords and Sons of Behemat, are probably down to their ability to minimise or remove threats. Kharadron can avoid the Warsong’s Mortals in early turns and make the most of their shooting to remove the Kurnoth for example. Gossamid’s are also likely to struggle. Thrown boulders will remove the Gossamid’s pretty quickly (3 rend into a 5+ save) and the Kurnoth can’t remove a Gargant in a single team.

As we move deeper into the season we are still seeing a range of factions at the top, within those factions the are less and less surprises. We are seeing optimisation around the new books or new rules with older books and with more reps the strongest units stand out. That will stabilise even more heading into the new Season which should give GW plenty of opportunity to shake things up.

Brett: All the big things Thunder Lizard list with minimum battleline. The Purple Sun to back up the Starmaster, this is more a combat list than casting after all. Just the 3 casts from the Starmaster, 1 from Arcane Tome and prayers from the Skink Priests (importantly they also have an unbind for Endless Spells). The Starmaster is casting at +1, +2 within 12″ of the Saurus Astrolith Bearer and most likely a +1 from the army. Doralia is along for her endless spell removal, the witch hunter is also very good at removing small casting heroes. A nice bonus with a lot of Nighthaunt lists around. 2 Stegadons, both crews are using the Skystreak Bow for a little 24″ shooting in addition to the Solar Engine (on Bastilidon). Great way to pressure all of the shorter range units.

3 Artefacts, from Warlord and Command Entourage. In series they create a wizard (Arcane Tome), heal and allow a recast (Itxi Grubs) and On top of the +1 to casting for coalesced the Battle Traits of Seraphon continue to be what makes the army so effective. -1 to incoming damage, an additional attacks for the Jaws, and summoning. 6 to 10 points are very easy to achieve each turn and give you the broadest range from Skinks, to Saurus (Guard or Knight) – screens and objective to a Salamander Hunting Pack for offense. Beastmaster on the Stegadon with Skink Chief in accordance with the Thunder Lizard mandatory requirements (+1 attack to the mounts weapon) is no penalty.

Overall Thunder Lizard continues to be successful because it’s a well rounded army with a lot of key abilities. Adding the Purple Sun (casting on a 5 most likely) just makes it that much more spicey and buffs all of the incoming attacks which is very useful to Seraphone (most of their attacks lack much rend). Since much of their damage is at range they avoid the issues with the Sun and can dispel it if it goes wild. John scored well through out and was the only undefeated entrant. Target priority would be hard to determine with this list and mortal wounds from ranged very useful to chip damage from it before closing. Most of his opponents were short on both shooting and mortals.

Brett: Having the misfortune to run into John in round 3 ended David’s run then. With only the 10 x Blood Stalkers in 2 x 5 model units this list would struggle to tackle the Stegodons and Bastildons. That leaves their heroes which aren’t the best trading pieces outside of the High Gladiatrix. With 10 wounds on a 5+ save and a 6+ ward the 5 model units are very fragile. The same is true of the Blood Sisters, this list would be difficult to play unless you were prepared to lose one or more of those units a turn. Ranged is best because Zainthar Kai fight again on death.

2 Priests with 4 spells including Sacrement to advance the Blood Rights table, Curse (MW on a natural 6 to hit) and Catechism of Murder for exploding 6s. Only one wizard with a single cast, the Bloodwrack Viper might not be used a lot. Particularly with Mindrazor being so good. There heroes are mostly in place to buff the larger infantry units, advancing Blood Rites and improving damage dealing. The High Gladiatrix brings a interesting, if difficult to use, assassination ability.

Ultimately David was able to score well throughout, looking at the run through the tournament quite a few of the the lists were susceptible to the sort of pressure DoK are good at. It’s an interesting take on DoK with so many MSU blocks, it would be good to see more games with it.

Brett: The current meta is wide open and there have been a few sightings of Ossiarch Bonereapers but they are still far from common, 3rd is a strong effort going 3/5 losing to 1st and 2nd in the final 2 rounds. A pretty traditional Ossiarch list, with Arkhan the Black and a Soulmason as the only heros. The points are tied to the Battleline (Mortek Guard are beefy and dear) with a large unit of Harbingers in bounty hunters to punish the unwary. 5 spells base but Arkhan has additional spells as well as buffs to casting on a degrading profile from his staff. Arkhan is the natural choice for Purple Sun (casting on a 6 for him). He is also a solid combat hero but you don’t want to get him into combat too early due to his casting.

The Soulmason offers re-roll hit rolls of 1, he has an ability where at the end of the hero phase he could apply it to up to D3 models which is a good reason to have him. The points saved on heroes have gone to the combat units, 2 x 20 Mortek Guard (40 wounds) and the reinforced Harbingers (4). Harbingers are very dear, they have a great stat-line but are pretty expensive per wound. Deathriders (and the Harbingers) for some mobility. Again there are a few MSU in the list that are vulnerable to being pickup relatively easily. The idea behind the list is pretty simple, the Mortek Guard camp objectives and you try to bait your opponent into you. They have a 4+ save and 6+ ward but most units have a movement of 4″ to 6″. They are vulnerable to shooting (as happened here).

Scott did see off a few of the meta’s current stars in the first 3 rounds. This list does give you quite a few options and at least some units that can seek to go wide if needed.

Brett: Double Keeper of Secrets in a 2 drop list with Synessa (for her wonderful gaze) and a Purple Sun just to make your opponent’s life difficult. But wait there’s more – in a spell heavy meta let’s introduce a character that forces opposing Wizards within 24″ to reroll successful casts and cause them D3 mortal wounds every time they cast a double. I give you the Infernal Enrapturess. Like Tzeentch, Slaanesh armies usually have a reasonable number of casts, 5 this time, and an extra dispel from the Enrapturess. Invaders allow up to 3 generals in the army (for command point and command purposes), only 2 are listed for this army though.

Feverish Anticipation (re-roll run rolls within 12″) from the mandatory requirements for Lurid Haze. Healing spell (Progeny of Damnation), turn off command abilities (Slothful Stupor) and hero heals (Born of Damnation). Sigvald is as always a swingy combat hero, the number of attacks determined by his charge roll and +3 to charge. He normally picks up something important. Neither Keeper of Secrets is a combat powerhouse (but they aren’t weak either) at least compared to other Greater Demons. The Soulfeaster is a forgeworld variant that loses the potential for a ranged weapon and has an intriguing warscroll ability. You offer your opponent to allow a hero to accept temptation. If they refuse, they take D3 mortal wounds. If they accept then they have 1 more attack this round, at the start of the next combat phase they roll a dice, 4-6 they are slain.

The battleline units are both thin and slightly fragile (as are the heroes for the most part). That allows Depravity Points to accumulate quickly though, Slaanesh relies on speed an summoning to overwhelm you. Shutting it down against invaders is tough with multiple generals and in this case multiple Keepers of Secret to play around. And a Purple Sun just to make life harder (the -1 to saves is pretty strong).Special mention to Synessa’s Staff, D3 if you make a save, D6 if you fail, you are only safe on a 6. Always an interesting army to play, their speed means it’s hard to prevent scoring but their fragility means you can score well into them.

Top Three AoS Lists for Old Town Throwdown, Summer Smash

This is the Top Three AoS Lists for the Age of Sigmar, Summer Smash that took place in Irvine, California, USA on 13 and 14 August. It involved 79 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5 game tournament. With more than 50 players and only 2 days/5 rounds the top 3 didn’t meet each other so no real meta comparisons are possible. But the event being determined by points alone gives a really good comparison between the Generals (aka the Hand of God).

Brett: It’s been a while since an Orruk army has been at the top of the podium and it’s fantastic to see a Big Waagh army at number one in such a big tournament. He’s done it by adding in Mortal Wound output (Wurrgog and Bolt Boyz) with range (Bolt Boyz again). That’s cost him the Mawcrusha but the Corpse-rippa moves almost as fast and is still very good in combat. Additionally having the Warchanter and Wurrgog means at the start of every turn the army is generating D6+3 Waagh points. That will make getting into combat and hitting harder that much easier. The list is centred on the Ardboyz in both MSU and a double reinforced contingent. All have as many shields as possible improving their save. Near a Warchanter they are rallying on a 4+ as well.

They only move 4″ but the Shaman can (might not but you have to allow for it) drop either the Gore Gruntas or the big block of ardboyz into your back area. The Boltboyz are hard to get to through shields, only long range shooting would threaten them, only the Skaven had much access to that. Aaron certainly didn’t win the tournament through his list building, this would have taken careful considered play to win but he took down meta lists with an off meta choice and should be congratulated.

Brett: Another Nurgle army in the top 3, they are having a lot of success in the current meta with or without Galletian Veterans. I think this list is a good example of why, there are a few really good warscrolls and the book is well enough balanced to allow multiple options in both heroes and troops. Lots of deployment tricks in this army. Firstly Drowned Men giving an 8″ pregame move to the Blightlords. The Blightkings and Gutrot Spume can be placed in reserve at the start of the game as well. Bloab is relatively common in current armies, mortal wounds, combat wizard and debuffs to units within 7″. That’s all enemy units within 7″.

We aren’t seeing Orghotts a lot lately but apart from being a strong combat hero he has a free command point a turn to spend on Mortal units (Blightkings). A lot of thought went into this army including adapting to a lack of mobility on the Blightkings and redundancy in the heroes. The army doesn’t have a lot of spells or denies and might be vulnerable there. Still it’s proven that it is flexible and effective taking out Sons of Behemat (DPS check) while being effective into horde armies (Soulblight) and rend cancelling (Nighthaunt). Great work going 5/0.

Brett: Last of the 5/0 lists and we have Seraphon, Thunder Lizard. Lord Kroak will dominate the casting supported by the Astrolith and even the Engine with Arcane Tome. Kroak is an amazing piece, all up this list has 7 casts/unbinds and reroll from Cogs. The Skinks and Saurus are really here as screens and for opportunistic objective play. They can always summon more skinks. The Bastiladons are the main damage dealer in the army which really wants you to get close for the melee attacks and pile the magic on. The Bastiladon wing is averaging 9 MW from the Ark every turn, if that’s concentrated it’s a major headache. The Ark is really good for dealing with Nighthaunt 1 damage model (no rend and a lot of dice).

Mass mortal wounds and lots of low quality attacks really plays into the Horrorghast. Even losing one or two models could be enough to see an MSU flee or even a large block of NH vanish to moral. And other than Mortal Wounds the Bastiladon with the 1+ save is a real problem. Scarlet Doom NH should have had the least problems but they would have been playing without magic so not able to return models. Overall a really solid difficult to deal with army but may struggle to succour battle tactics and score with only a few trading pieces (unless the Engine really fires well).

Brett: The last list for the event is a faction we don’t see a lot – Ogor Mawtribes. Mawtribes is probably a anti meta choice and Underguts shooting list even more so. Underguts gives an extra 6″ range but this is a really swingy old world faction. Leadbelchers have to roll for the number of their ranged attacks (D3 and D6 if they don’t move), The Ironguts have a single long range shot that does D6 damage, and Gnoblars to die aimlessly. Ogor’s are a heap of fun, just not reliable. With only one caster and cast this isn’t a magic army. Everything in the army, even the Butcher has combat capability, it’s hard to close and not take damage unless you can wipe a unit. The Butcher needs to stay back (5+ save) but almost everything except the Gnoblar are 4 wounds with a 4+ save.

That’s a bit of a break point, with 32 effective wounds you need serious strikes to be sure of destroying the unit. If you don’t then they can hit back very hard and your unit is open to be charged by another Ogor. 13th in a large tournament is an awesome effort. NH turning off rend impacts Ogor better quality attacks and Maggotkin mortal wound production are both big impacts to the Ogors. I suspect the shooting from this list was a bit of a surprise to most.

This is the Top Three AoS Lists for TURNAJ O NÁČELNÍKA OPIČÍCH HOR that took place in the Czech Republic on 13th and 14th July. It involved 24 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5 game tournament.

Danny: The list is entirely built around maximum threat projection from Kroak. I imagine the Spellportal is for turn 1 spell spam while the Oracle and Krondspine get into position, the former to pin threats while the latter grabs objectives and acts as a mobile Spellportal.

16″ with the Astrolith bearer from wherever the Spell-portal or Oracle is – assuming Kroak is sitting pretty next to the portal – might end up with the option of pumping at his 3x scroll spell anywhere that’s meaningful on the board.

Having the Krondspine bound to the Oracle also gives it a better chance of getting Portal set up T1 for Kroak to spam through so he doesn’t have to use up one of his.

Danny: Running the Krondspine with Morathi is a riff on the Gotrek combo in that it gives a usually super fragile faction two big utility hammers that are also super-anvils.

Krondspine lacks Gotrek’s pure combat prowess but offers DoK a rare source of a bonus to cast and, more crucially, a way to pin or block key threats to their squishy core of blood sisters/stalkers. In this case, it’s bound to a Gladiatrix – their cheapest hero – with a Tome, meaning it just snakes in under the points limit.

The rest – a 15 blob of double shooting sneks with zealous orator to keep them coming back – is standard fare now, but no less effective for it. The only loss coming from Nurgle suggests a lack of scoring potential or pure damage ceiling – but either way a great result with a streamlined list.

Danny: Until the last set of FAQs, KO were struggling in a meta that rewarded save-stacking and objective play – for the obvious reasons they don’t have access to much rend or objective play. But the Purple Sun changes everything, given they can auto-cast it from Spell in a Bottle. Turns out giving access to an additional pip of rend to an army that revolves entirely around ranged threat projection changes the script.

The Celestant-Prime proves a perennial and valuable ally, offering a targeted, bankable melee scalpel thanks to his auto-charge out of reserves.

All told, KO are having a proper renaissance – even though they’re still badly in need of their _actual_ book being brought in line with 3e, it’s great to see generals finding creative workarounds and getting some serious results in the meantime.

Peter: I chose an Ogors list today as we don’t see too many of these. Frostlords and Huskards always hit like a tonne of bricks causing on average 16.2 damage before saves! Boulderhead gives the big boys an extra wound and a mount trait for every Stonehorn or Thundertusk.

It’s a quick army with the slowest units moving 9″ a turn, and with high wounds and high saves all round it’s surprisingly durable as well.

They’ll want to get in your face as quickly as they can to take advantage of their high damage outputs.

This is the Top Three AoS lists for Quest of Champions Heat 4 that took place in the Sanctuary Gaming Centre and Coffee Shop in Sutton-in-Ashfield, UK on August 6th and 7th. Quest of Champions is run by Warrior Lodge in Nottingham, UK. There was a total of 38 players competing in this five-round heat, the top twelve of which will be invited back for a grand final later this year.

Patrick: One of the best parts of Age of Sigmar is seeing huge, god-tier centerpiece models not only regularly used on tables, but seeing those units perform to their points cost. Between the upgrades the Nighthaunt saw in their recent book, including their excellent spell lore, I imagine that we will begin to see Nagash show up in more Death lists as time goes on. Andrew’s list shows Nagash supporting (or being supported by) a big killy block of ghosts.

Nagash can produce an almost offensive number of spells in the Hero phase, and the re-roll from the Cogs makes those casts unlikely to be turned off by an early phase miscast. On top of that, Nagash is pulling double-duty by keeping the units of Bladegheists alive and closer to full strength throughout the fight.

Speaking of Bladegheists: there are 40 of them present in this list, including one reinforced unit. The buffs they can receive from the Chainghasts and Spirit Torment can turn them into a force to be reckoned with, and Andrew used them to great effect in this tournament. The units can be used both as mobile screens, protecting Nagash from incoming enemies, or as a melee threat while supported by the Spirit Torment and Chainghasts. The Scarlet Doom spirit host allows for the large unit of Bladegheists to reliably put out mortal wounds, leaning into one of the more common winning strategies in the current meta.

The Purple Sun makes an appearance in this list, as it does in most lists featuring wizards, and the forward push from the Arcane Tome wielding Spirit Torment allows for the Sun to be placed in a favorable position early in the game, rather than casting it and presenting opportunities for the opponent to dispel it as it works its way up the table 8” at a time.

This is also the only list featured today that uses a grand strategy other than No Place for the Weak. Fright or Flight seems to be leaning more towards a conservative defensive approach, relying on preventing enemies from contesting objectives rather than outright killing the opponent. Overall, a straightforward list, but one that saw Andrew win four of his games with a draw in the fourth round.

Patrick: What’s the best way to keep the Purple Sun from wiping your 500+ point leader on an unlucky roll? Have your 500+ point leader be a six-man squad of Varanguard! Or two of those units in Toby’s case. Toby is taking advantage of one of the stranger aspects of Knights of the Empty Throne, in that your leaders don’t need to be a single model, bringing a total of 12 Varanguard spread across two reinforced units. Both units carry Warpsteel Shields, providing them some resistance to spells and endless spells, and both have been improved through artefacts and command traits, allowing the two units to buff the defenses of nearby units, keep enemies locked in combat, and automatically dispel one spell. The leaders are rounded out through a pair of Sorcerer Lords, which can use Mask of Darkness to sling any given unit in the army to the other side of the board, allowing a unit of Iron Golems to catch a distant objective or place a 6-man unit of heroic Varanguard behind enemy lines.

The army wide Tzeentch mark and Chaos Warshrine give a clear image of how badly Toby doesn’t want his opponents to successfully cast, and when they do manage to get a spell off, he wants to make sure that it doesn’t hit as hard as his opponents expects. A Mindstealer is there to supplement the martial abilities of the already-proficient Varanguard, helping ensure that they can get the most out of the combat phase by delaying an opponent’s turn to fight.

The use of a Battle Regiment that doesn’t include all units in the army makes for an interesting addition, potentially preventing Toby’s priority but allowing him to deploy more reactively to his opponents. Those units may have been better placed in a battalion providing more utility benefits, such as an Expert Conquerors or Bounty Hunters battalion. Ultimately Toby drove this army to a top spot with the Battle Regiment, so it clearly worked. We can talk at length about the magic-heaviness of the current meta, but seeing a list that turns that around to focus on magical defense rather than output shows that there are hard counters present to arcane lists. The fact that Toby took this list to a 4/1 victory and 2nd place overall, with only a single loss to a Thunder Lizard list, shows that sometimes martial might makes right.

Patrick: Ah, Kroaknado, how we miss thee. In such a magic and mortal wound heavy meta, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that Lord Kroak remains such a strong presence in high-ranking Seraphon lists, going 4/1 with a second-round loss to Hallowed Knights. Tom takes advantage of Kroak’s 4 casting attempts, a stock +2 to casting, unbind, and dispelling rolls, and the ability to unbind spells cast anywhere on the map, Kroak is an arcane powerhouse. While this list does not take advantage of the ability to measure line-of-sight from skink wizards or Oracles, it does include some Saurus Guard to help beef up Kroak’s already impressive defenses. It’s a shame that the Balewind Vortex is no longer available, otherwise we could see Tom run the true insanity of 2nd edition Kroak.

A pair of Bastiladons are near constants in Thunder Lizard lists. Their tremendous defense and high-quality shooting always impress and taking two allows Tom to take advantage of Thunder Lizards command ability throughout the fight, leading the pair to push out an average of 18 wounds at their top bracket with more against Chaos armies or with the use of All-out Attack, enough to potentially wipe some reinforced squads of Galletian Veterans off a nearby objective.

The list includes a trio of utility heroes largely meant to improve the defenses and recover from heavy losses throughout the battle. A pair of non-reinforced Saurus Warriors act as excellent mobile screens to block the progress of enemy melee units. There is also a small cadre of Chameleon Skinks, which are an excellent harassing unit, and surprisingly durable when taking advantage of their “Perfect Mimicry” ability. While unreliable, the mortal wounds that can be caused by their dart pipes will always be appreciated when the dice are in Tom’s favor.

Two of the top three placing armies at this event included the Chronomantic Cogs and Purple Sun. These endless spells are highly effective at their current points cost, and the added boost the Cogs provide to any magic-heavy army cannot be understated. The Purple Sun remains ever-present in the meta and will probably be here to stay until the next General’s Handbook gets released.

Patrick: Hero-hammer is a thing of beauty and dropping half of your army’s cost on fitting four different rotting corpses into the leader slot of your roster is an excellent place to start. Thomas took an uncommon FEC list to the top ten, going 4/1 with a loss in the second round to a Scarlet Doom Nighthaunt list (I suppose Nagash is allowed to have a favorite child for the moment).

Thomas is using Hollowmourne to its full effect by taking two double-reinforced units of Crypt Horrors, with the right support from the Archregent the damage potential of these units can quickly build from fearsome to terrifying. The ability for the Terrorgheist to keep up with the extra speed provided to one unit by Deranged Transformation makes sure to keep the unit in the aura of hit roll re-rolls. The summons from both Abhorrent units can also help supplement the army’s relatively low model count by bringing large blocks of Crypt Ghouls to the field (up to 40 between the two).

The Crypt Infernal Courtier’s high Movement characteristic and artefact make it an excellent hero hunter. The Varghulf pulls its weight both by being a support hero for the Ghouls and Horrors, but also by being a melee threat by itself.

Top Three AoS Lists for BWG: Summer Slaughter GT

This is the Top Three AoS Lists for the BWG: Summer Slaughter GT that took place in Pennsylvania, USA on 23rd and 24th July. It involved a massive 102 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5 game tournament. An interesting result, 2 of the lists feature White Dwarf rule adjustments and we have Seraphon. In fact the whole top 5 is made up of AoS 2 books with 6th being the highest placed. Of course 5 to 10 are all the newest of books (Skaven and Sylvaneth).

Brett: Tuned to excess (I know what I did there) with the most efficient Slaanesh Warscrolls combined alongside Krondspine and that Purple Sun. The result is a mobile army with brutal amounts of shooting backed by enough hitting power to remove your hammers (or anvils). This is a very interesting army which avoids any of the larger heroes (Glutos, Keeper of Secrets or Shalaxi) for Krondspine and maximum Blissbarb.

Anthony has taken advantage of the Invaders battle traits to gain a second hero for command purposes. Useful to increase the sweep of command abilities. 2 Wizards with 3 casts and denies but neither are true wizards so the list really has 3 combat heros with denies. Starting with Sigvald; he continues to be a machine, ignoring wards but has a 4+ ward, with his minimum 5 attacks hitting on 2s and wounding on 3s with Rend -2 and D3 damage. If he charges he can use his charge roll for his attacks. Invaders allow the placement of 3 units into ambush (deep strike) so there is an excellent chance of meeting him after he charges (3+ to his charge roll), of course he strikes first. Avoid hm by staying more than 15″ from the edge of the board. Any edge.

The Contorted Epitome is quite tanky in this build with +1 wound and it’s normal 2+ ward on MW. 14″ move and with Flaming Weapon (presumably on the Ravaging Claws) for 9 attacks with a rend -1 and 2 damage weapon. And ability to make other units fight after it if it charges. The Chariot and Epitome have warscroll spells to grant rerolls for 1s. The Chariot has an impressive melee profile but more importantly can retreat and charge, it inflicts mortal wounds on the charge. The Hysterical Frenzy spell inflicts more MW. These combat characters make sense when the rest of the list is mostly Blissbarb. 2 attacks but a 6+ save and 1 wound mean they will melt under pressure. With a 6″ move (but they can run and shoot) mobility is limited but they can take Sigvald up the board with them.

With the limited casting and no real wizards (who have buffed casting) getting Purple Sun out might be hard. Geminids have a CV of only 5 though and are no where near as powerful as the Purple Sun. Still they inflict MW on a unit with 1″ at the end of their movement on a 2+ and if they do they turn off commands. An army that is going to apply pressure from the start, it pretty much always wants to go second to see where the best places to drop in units. If they take Sigvald into ambush with 2 of the Blissbard Archers units their opponent is going to have real trouble. Anthony scored consistently through all rounds (26+), most of his opponents had either Eternal Conquerers or Bounty Hunters or both which this list largely negates (they are shooting you off objectives, your numbers won’t count).

Brett: It’s been a while since Kharadron Overlords have climbed to the top of the tree. Coming off a recent buff from both the mid year points (only 2 units) and White Dwarf revision Carl is one of 3 to go 5/0 in the event. He does have both the Purple Sun and Krondspine and 2 wizards to bind them thanks to the Arcane Tome. I wonder if we will see anything about the Purple Sun and Krondspine before the next Battlescroll is due in September.The general, the Aether-Khemist is an obvious choice, one of 3 Khemist only artefacts guarantees an endless spell can be cast once per game. The Purple Sun has a casting value of 8 so if there is anyway to make it a sure thing take it.

Slow moving he also hands out a re-roll wound rolls of 1 to a unit within 12″ and reduces to-hit rolls within 3″ (himself and another character typically) unless garrisoned, so he has to be on foot. His own attacks are much riskier, 3D6 with rend -2 sound great but only 9″ range make it a risky proposition. Of course he can garrison a vessel. The Navigator is here for his dispel and reroll run and charges for vessels if they are visible to him. Lastly the Admiral, who was the most changed by White Dwarf here. He lost 3 of his 4 unique command abilities, keeping the ability to allow a unit to fire even if it had run (Master of the Skies). Flaming Weapon is an interesting choice, he has reroll hits and wounds against monsters and heroes.

He is a small beatstick with only 3 attacks, -2 rend, 2 damage. He can divert wounds to the Arkanaut Companies (Skyfarers). Otherwise 3 battle line Arkanauts with minimal upgrades, Thunderers for some punch. With limited capacity in the flying units I would garrison the Thunderers and forgo the hero buffs to minimise their exposure. All of the KO shooting units have quite short ranges, typically 18″ or less except for the boats. The addition of the Purple Sun to increase saving throws for adjacent units with the number of shots from even the Arkanauts is a great combo. The Krondspine is pure distraction and menace, it takes a lot to deal with but can’t easily be ignored. In melee he can delete weaker units and at least bracket most bigger heroes in a single turn.

His highest ranked opponent was 11th, so it’s not clear how much we can take from his matchups. Most of the armies this went against were a bit short on shooting with the exception of his 2nd opponent. 5/0 is no small accomplishment and the list is quite different with so few boats and mostly footsloggers who aren’t riding.

Brett: The last of the 5/0 armies coming in 3rd with an absolute hero hammer of a army. Over a 1000 points in heroes, some skinks and Saurus to fill those pesky battleine and 3 Bastiladons because why not. The inclusion of Horrorghast in interesting and the decision to play into the Triumph (Inspired). Those 40 points could have upgraded Skinks to Saurus or Chronomatic Cogs for casting rerolls. I wonder what Michael thinks after the event. Again this army wasn’t paired into any of the top 10 armies so not a lot can be drawn from the matchups.

Kroak is an amazing wizard, only Nagash and Teclis match him with 4 casts/unbinds and no range limitation on his unbinds. He adds +2 to casts, can make nearby units fly and give a +1 to save. He’s very hard to kill so those spells are there the whole game. The Astrolith is also a wizard and the Engine of the Gods has some decent combat prowess but is mostly here for the Cosmic Engine. Thunder Lizard means it rolls twice. Celestant-Prime is a SCE ally, their most expensive non dragon hero.

24″ shooting attack (D3 MW to units with 6″ of a point) and the mighty Ghaz Maral hammer. Starting at 3 attacks, -3 rend, 3 damage hitting on 3s and wounding on 2s he gains 2 attacks for each turn you leave him in reserve. Once a turn he can change a dice roll, including a charge roll. Arrive in Turn 3 with 7 attacks and a guaranteed turn or bring him in earlier if things are going badly. He is likely to delete any smaller hero when he arrives and is even a good chance (with help) to force an incarnate to lose a level.

The Bastiladons are rocking an extra 2 wounds, taking 4 wounds to bring them below a 1+ save. I know, stupid GW a 1+ roll always fails, except for Bastiladons and moral (40k). Anyway all of them are using the Ark of Sotek for maximum attacks (18 at top bracket) looking for MWs on 6s. Hunter Battalions are less common as well so there is a good chance of a monstrous action affecting opponents. A Thunder Lizard army with all of the big toys as we’ve come to know is pretty effective and has done extremely well here.

Brett: 4/1 only gets you to 15th place in this tournament, only getting his Grand Strategy 3 times with the dropped game seeing Sam slide. The new Season 1 Battle Traits and Grand Strategies are that much harder. I am not sure that Show of Dominance is a good pick, it’s quite risky trying to place a GV unit in each quarter. Blades of Khorne can summon additional veterans though through Blood Tithe points which you earn by killing units. And that’s what this army is built for.

With Skarbrand and 2 more Bloodthirsters as well as a Demon Prince this army moves fast and hits very very hard. Or whiffs (nothing personal Skarbrand). Getting to 4 points shouldn’t be hard unless your opponent is super elite. 4 points grants 10 Bloodletters. Back to the heroes – the Crimson Crown is a good choice on the Demon Prince allowing him to use Bloodslicked Ground for free. Mage eater for a deny in an almost castless army (the Slaughterpriest has a deny as well) and Skullshard Mantle, because Blades of Vengenace must take it, round out the enhancements. Blood Scarifice allows the generation of Blood Tithe, farming 5 a game, at the cost of something cheap (Centigors or Bloodreavers).

13 drops (not 8) and 131 points without summoning Sam had a tough road facing 3 new books in his first 3 rounds and only dropping one. His last game was Lumineth, and interesting problem for a melee army. Solid effort Sam.

Brett: Thunder Lizards with Lord Kroak, Engine of the Gods and Bastiladons has been a very reliable since AoS2.0 so no surprise here. This list ignores AoS3 and even the new season completely to still produce a very strong performance. One change with the new season though is the return of endless spells to the list. For the cost of a Saurus unit you can both increase the reliability of your spells (decrease the flow of time with the Chronomantic Cogs) and increase range with Spellportal. Use the Starpriest to cast Cogs and then Lord Kroak can bring out the Portal if he needs to and cast another 3 spells. He also brings 4 unbinds, there are a total of 7 in this list, even with Teclis you are going to struggle in the hero phase. The list just meshes and has a lot of synergies down to the Astrolith providing +1 to cast and a 6+ ward which works on mortal wounds. The plan is to use the Saurus to take objectives, carry out actions and use the Bastilidon’s and Engine of the Gods to carry out ranged attacks. The Engine might even summon a few Saurus Warriors just to make things a bit harder. The Bastilidon’s 1+ save is a nightmare unless you have consistent Mortal Wound output, Stormstrike Chariots and Goregruntas with the impact hits are amoung the better options. For most armies their mortal wounds are from spells, we already covered how hard this list makes that.

Looking at the match ups this wasn’t an easy road with 2 DoK lists, Idoneth and Beasts. The first 3 lists all feature a lot of shooting (Reavers, Blood Sisters and Judicators) but none of it high quality or pushing out Mortals. The Idoneth “fog” wouldn’t have helped them because Seraphon shooting is short range and they will force you to come to them anyway. Even hordes aren’t effective into this sort of list. The Solar Engines and the Engine of the Gods are delivering upwards of 20 damage into high save units with Kroak having access to a lot of damaging spells. 5/0 is a great result and just goes to show how good this list really is.

Brett: New book and new rules sees the rats clamber back up onto the top table. I think it’s great, they are a crazy army with some great, if old, models. This list really needs some more Rat Swarms though for the ambience. Skaven, as is fitting for suriviors from the end times, have an amazing number of warscrolls although only the highlights are here. Undoubtedly for good reason this is really a hero hammer list disquised in a horde army. Thanquol and the Deceiver are almost half of the cost of the list. There is a very neat combo in this list, the Deceiver, can cast 2 spells including a teleport within 6″ for a model with 13 wounds or less. And flaming weapon. So he can teleport himself very close, then cast flaming weapon and now has 6 attacks, hitting on 3+ and wounding on 2+ with R-3, D3 if he can make a 6″ charge. Usually he will have 5 shooting attacks as well. Very nasty. Lauchon the Soulseeker can do the same thing with Thanquol with the major advantage that they can still carry out a normal or run move afterwards. The combination of traits/artefacts the Verminlord is carrying give him 8 attacks if he is near a unit that hasn’t activated. With Flaming Weapon this creates a very flexible nightmare for your opponent that is very difficult to screen Both of the big heros can be almost anywhere on the battlefield. The Purple Sun is here for threat, -1 to save rolls and that risk of it eating something important. Can’t overstate the usefulness of the Purple Sun at the moment. Especially in a list with large units with low rend like the clan rats. The Purple Sun can give their 21 attacks R-1. Clanrats are mostly for screening and objectives, Gutter Runners for forward deploy and Stormfiends. Stormfiends continue to be a very nasty unit with loads of rend in both their ranged and melee attacks. Not forgetting the Bombadier for the crazy Doom Rocket and Warp Lightning.

I would have liked to see how this list against the eventual winner. The only loss was to the eventual third. This list would struggle to produce enough wounds to deal with a Krondspine while it could easily absorb a lot of this list and make itself stronger. All in all a great list with plenty of rat craziness to go around.

Brett: Another list with a recent glowup, White Dwarf this time, adding to the year of Chaos. A great 4/0 run here placing third but also beating second place in his run up. Joseph’s only loss was to our winner, the Seraphon. The Herdstone gives everything (except the Incarnate) R-1 for turns 1 and 2 and then R-2 for the rest of the game. Almost half of the list is the 2 bounty hunter lists but their mobility, number of attacks and the increasing rend with the +1 Damage would have made it very hard to hold objectives. And that’s before they make an extra model run. Given the design of the list I think the intention was to funnel units towards the Kronspine using Vicious Stranglethorns on terrain and making the opponent to play around it. The list provides a lot of screening and control with most of the killing being between the Krondpine and the Tzaangors. The gors also serve as a great target for Primordial Call.

The match up into the Seraphone is interesting because for once the Krondspine would struggle. The Bastildons aren’t vulnerable unless they are off their top bracket because there is no mortal wound output. And Kroak could afford to keep feeding endless spells towards it to reduce it’s level. Thunderlizard is probably the worst night mare for Incarnates in the game.

Brett: Not a lot I can say about this list, there is so little recent performance information on Dwarves. I think any of the fantasy factions would struggle in the modern meta given the shift to Save stacking and high rend weapons. You would have an advantage because most people won’t know your abilities. Limited shooting (apart from the big guns), poor saves, no rend (K’Daai in particular) and slow; the poor Dwarves and their Daemon allies were outgunned.

It’s great that someone is so committed to their faction that they are willing to take the risk and bring something so different to a large tournament. AoS3 is in a great place at the moment because, while there are some factions that do a little better than others (Thunder Lizard and DoK) there is a broad church of factions and ways within each of the factions that can take wins. It’s a really consistent broad meta. Even the approach with each of the lists on the podium is so different, 2 with endless spells but covering 4 different spells and one with an incarnate. They would all play very differently and take different tactics to counter.

Slaves to Darkness and Blades of Khorne continue their run of good form in experienced hands. While the new battletomes of Nighthaunt and Sylvaneth can also be seen in the +55% area. Daughters of Khaine are smack in the middle with a perfect 50% win rate. While Skaven are beginning to climb.

Drowned Men continue to lead the way with a win rate of 69.1% despite Maggotkin overall only having a win rate of 53.8%. Nighthaunt and Scarlet Doom find themselves near the top now as predicted by Danny some weeks ago. Meanwhile at the bottom of the table Ossiarch Bonereapers/Petrifex Elite are the only subfaction below 30% win rate.

Interestingly Fyreslayers have Lofnir (6 PLayers) with a win rate of 51.7% and the more popular Greyfyrd (9 Players) at 35.2%, are people playing the wrong subfaction?

Chaos continue to lead the way in the win rates. While Order pick up the most number of armies represented, most 5-0’s and most 4+. When you compare army share to the number of battletomes each Grand Alliance possess you can see that Order are overrepresented, while Chaos are vastly under represented:

I’ve highlighted all those faction win rates in red which are outside of the parameters that players have stated would make the game roughly balanced (45-55%).

I’m looking at the bottom of the table as I’m writing this, and its hard not to overlook Fyreslayers, Gloomspite Gitz and Ossiarch Bonereapers with win rates of less than 40%! Gloomspite Gitz are getting their new book this year, so hopefully we’ll see that improve. Fyreslayers have been mugged by Games Workshop rules writers, and it just shows how awful that book is. I feel for long term Fyreslayers players…

At the top of the table Beasts of Chaos now currently lead the way with a win rate of 67.1%! They’ve gone from trash tier to S tier in the space of 3 months. Slaves to Darkness are a bit of an anomaly at the top there, and this is primarily driven by a few high level players who vastly our performed the faction this month, much like Anthony Trentanelli did a few weeks ago with Skaven. Maggotkin of Nurgle and Seraphon win rates have both dropped, but its too early to tell why, as the new rules for Seraphon only really came into effect last week.

Maggotkin of Nurgle are a bit of a strange faction. While you have one of the meta leading Subfactions inside the tome with Drowned Men (68.0%, at the bottom of the pack you have Befouling Host (40.0%). It’s not an irregularity either as 7 players have played that subfaction and one claimed 5 wins at an event and another 5 losses. This suggests to me that while Drowned Men is a simple list to play, Befouling Host is completely the opposite and requires good memory and skill from the pilot.

After almost a year of publication now, both Stormcast and Orruk Warclan battletomes are beginning to show a little lag behind the other updated factions (apart from Fyreslayers of course). As the first of the Battletomes perhaps this has played into their stats slightly as the rules writers learn from their mistakes (apart from Fyreslayers of course) when writing the newer tomes.

Scarlet Doom shows that its the faction of choice for a reason in the new Nighthaunt battletome (60.0%) however, its still early days for this battletome and the other factions could be more complicated to pick up and play. However 60.0% win rate for any subfaction is too high and so they may need a future nerf at some point.

Going forwards as the weeks go on, I’ll be keeping an eye out for Grinin’ Blades beginning to get some more play with their updated allegiance abilities after not being placed at all due to all the Kruleboyz players choosing Big Yellers – this will change. I expect to see them nearing the 50% mark and above. Likewise with Skaven, I expect them to begin climbing the rankings as their new rules come into effect.

THE SUPRISE

I said I had a surprise, and here it is!

Woehammer will be doing a player ranking system for the new General’s Handbook based on the Elo system used by Chess.

Who gets ranked?

Everyone who takes part in a two day event using the General’s Handbook: Pitched Battles Season 1 2022-23. Each week I’ll update the scores of the players as they happen and post them in a separate rankings post which will be published every Saturday.

All players will begin with a rating of 1,000 at the beginning of the season, player ratings will be carried over into season 2 and beyond in the future.

I’ve included the current rankings below (there’s only been two GT’s using the new Handbook) which includes everyone at present. However, I will limit this to the top 20 as more players are ranked. The full downloadable player rankings will be available on the site to download next weekend.
