Kharadron Overlords Faction Breakdown – December 2023

SUBFACTIONS

Overall, Barak-Mhornar appears to be the most successful subfaction at GTs with a win rate of 66%, while at the RTT setting, the Grundstok Expeditionary Force appears to be having the stronger run with 72%.

Barak-Zon, appears to be the most popular subfaction.

Here we can see that Barak-Mhornar are the faction with the highest percentage of players who achieve 4+ wins in a GT setting (but only represented by 9 players), but the Grundstok Expeditionary Force have the highest positive win ratio (amber and green combined).

Looking at it from an RTT perspective, the Grundstok Expeditionary Force is still the highest % of players going to an RTT and achieving a positive result.

This chart can show a lack of balance via results, if all factions were perfectly balanced (along with player skills) then the opposing bars (i.e. 5-0 and 0-5, 3-2 and 2-3) would be even.

FACTION MATCHUPS

Note that these stats are across all game formats.

As you can see, with a faction that has a string win rate and is currently the meta leader, there are very, very few unfavourable matches. Only Ironjawz push the KO to the limit.

TOTAL POINTS: 2000/2000

Roland Rivera: The Glottkin continues his relentless march over the Mortal Realms, as this is yet another podium result for Nurgle’s favorite triplets in the Befouling Host subfaction for an extra jolt of summoning power. This list has a deep lineup of dance partners for the Glottkin – if you’re looking to lock something down, send in some Plaguebearers within the Sloppity Bilepiper aura to make them unable to pile in. If you’re looking to take them out, send in one of the Maggoth Lords and start swinging.

Another great perk to Befouling Host is getting Beasts of Nurgle as Battleline. These guys fill out your Battleline on the cheap, and also make for an efficient screen/disruption piece. This list also doubles down on the cheap disruption department with the inclusion of a unit of Nurglings, which help you generate contagion points and force your opponent to screen them out.

While many players are doubtless aware of this list’s gameplan by now, knowing is only half the battle, and stopping these servants of the Plague God from owning the middle of the board is easier said than done.

Kieren Coates: The list is a classic skaven list that was built by myself, Jordan (warpfire minis), and Keegan (mechrat) – it’s well balanced with a variety of threats

Between two verminlords, 20 PCB’s, hell pit, blizzard and great plagues it can deliver an incredible amount of damage when required – just make sure to not get hit in the good stuff before you can hit your opponent

For matchups, my first round sadly, my opponent had a medical complication the previous evening and was unable to attend.

Round 2 was into Jeremy’s SBGL with heavy recursion and wolves focus, in which a double turn from two verminlords and a hell pit was able to tear right through the centre to reach the soft heroes which underpin the army

My loss to nurgle was to a glottkin slopidy counter melle list from Lazlo – it has been a while since I’ve played into this variant, and mistakes were made.

As a tip for this matchup, it’s very good at pinning your models into place and preventing piles to get most of your models into range – with this in mind in a counter intuitive manner it’s best to lead the charge in with your buffed up verminlords, and have your hell pit and PCB’s waiting in the back for the next turn after the fight has been engaged

The reason for this is if he is able to countercharge into your clanrats, he can place one model just at 2.9 inches from your hammers, combined with slopidy heavily reducing their damage.

However if this is done to the verminlords, with their 3 inch scythe they can still very easily murder what they are put into, rather than only being able to hit with 2-3 PCB’s and being locked out for the game

Lazlo was a great opponent who went on to get 2nd place, only losing to Nathan’s KO in the final round as his list was not designed to fight mass ranged, and I was glad to see him reaching the podium for a strong run.

Round 4 was Jordan’s mixed KotET with a varanguard and belakhor focus, which was an incredibly tight game with myself being pushed down early, I managed to get one sneaky play of censors with death frenzy through a gnawhole to charge the knights, only to double pile around into the varanguard with death frenzies to keep them in check. realising the only way out was a double turn on 3-4 to wipe the board. Playing under the assumption of it being my only out, I hit the double, which sealed the game

My final game was against Tristan and his Ironjaws where I was forced to go first, and set up my defensive lines (death frenzy, dreaded frenzy, mystic shield, flaming weapon) and scored while sitting as far back as possible

On his turn one, he cleared all my clanrats and left my army exposed

Having won priority, I chose to give it to him despite being exposed as I knew as a true ironjaws player, he would be full sending it – however this was a mistake as he should have moved backwards and waited for my defensive buffs to clear

With everything engaged, he chose to fight first with Mawkrusha with destroyer into verminlord warbringer with mystic shield, finest hour, and all-out defence. Sadly for him, he didn’t kill the verminlord, which was essential as it prevented smashing and bashing, which let my plague censors now hit into his pigs and kill all 6 of them.

The other Mawkrusha and pigs killed my hell pit and some less essential pieces, but it now left them exposed on my turn for blizzard, great plagues, frenzies censors and verminlords to clean up – resulting in a bloodbath that effectively called the game

Additional Enhancements
Prayer

Total: 2000 / 2000

Roland Rivera: This list is a spicy morsel – it has taken the standard Khorne Mortals framework, and added spellcasting to the mix as an added dimension on both defense (hello, Mystic Shield!) and offense, as the mortal wound endless spells can provide damage at range. Another interesting inclusion is Dromm, which brings some beefy melee bodyguards and another source of mortal wounds at range thanks to his prayer.

As you’d expect, the frontline for these lists is rock solid – Blood Warriors for holding the middle, Skullreapers for damage, Claws of Karanak and Bloodreavers for utility and objective pressure, Skarr Bloodrwath as a reusable source of Blood Tithe. The Bloodthirster of Unfettered Fury also looms large as a Hero Monster that can provide both defense or offense as needed. Don’t sleep on the Pink Horrors as a screen, either – especially since they bite back when they die.

In summary, the Coven’s spellcasting combined with the typical Khorne Mortal beef is a potent combination that Jordan used to great effect, and as this is not the first time that a Khorne list featuring the Coven has achieved notable results, expect to see it more often going forward.

Lodivicus: Another variation of Jaws of Mork core podiums again! Skragrott, a Squigboss, Squig Herd, Boingrot Bounderz, Gobbapalooza and the Bad Moon Loonshrine all make an appearance from the core. In this list, Rob flexes out of the more common Madcap Shaman (with Moonface Mommet and Hoarfrost) for a Webspinner Shaman (with Hoarfrost and native 5+ ward). The highly popular Sneaky Snufflers also hit the chopping block to free up points.

So what’s the change? What are the points used for? Forty Moonclan Shootas and five Loonsmashas Fanatics. We haven’t talked about these two units much in previous commentaries, so let’s dive in!

Moonclan Shootas have two 20” ranged attacks each (when they have 10 or more models) plus one for the Champion for a wild 81 attacks per turn at full strength. While they don’t have a particularly efficient attack profile, with AoA, their high volume should end up doing about 9 damage into a 4+ save. That’s pretty solid for clearing screens for the Squigs to get in and at a far enough distance they can still blanket an objective while doing so. If the opponent gets within charge range, you can pop out the Loonsmashas for protection (assuming they were hidden here and not in the Gobbapalooza).

The whirling dervishes, the Loonsmasha Fanatics, can reveal themselves at the start of the charge phase. With their strike-first effect and d6 rend -2 damage d3 attacks each, they can function as anything from a speed bump to a weapon of mass destruction depending on the high variability of the rolls. Either way, whether they protect your grots or get launched offensively into the enemy on your turn, they are an effective and fun ‘casino type’ piece.

Congrats to Rob on his 2nd place finish (only losing in Round 3 to Big Waaagh). Keep those Loonsmashas drinking their Fungus Brew!

Carl Stokes: Another spectacular showing by KO, this time with Barak Nar! This is a faction I haven’t explored in great detail personally, but this list has some very interesting synergies that really elevate it to the next level. Barak Nar is all about command points and having an enormous amount of them. By making thunderers battleline as part of their subfaction abilities, the general can now take stormcaller as a command trait to maximize the value provided by the navigator.

Bee also took the Lord-Magnate of Barak Nar, Brokk Grungsson, who is truly living up to his full potential in that subfaction. Brokk is shockingly tanky at 8w and a 3+ native save, while also being incredibly fast and weirdly good at close combat. Oh and he also shoots ridiculously hard and buffs skyfarers around him if they charge. For example, let’s say a frigate charges a target while carrying Brokk and 3 Endrinriggers.

The resulting combat phase might look a little something like this…

Frigate impact hits for about 4 MW.
Brokk and endrinriggers pile out.
Then the Endrinriggers (who are always striking first) hit with 10 attacks at (probably) 2/3/-2/d3 with Brokk (also striking first) hitting with 5 attacks at 3/2/-2/d3. The frigate also probably does some stuff, but that’s not quite as relevant. In short, Brokk and the endrinriggers fight way better than one might expect, and with the Frigate acting as a reliable combat delivery system, they’re a ruthless combo that can certainly catch opponents off-guard.

And of course they’re backed up by the traditional Ironclad + Khemist + Thunderers combo of ridiculous mobility and shooting neatly packaged into 2 drops with 20 arkanauts providing both screening and home objective control. A Navigator and Admiral pair serve as both an anti-magic nexus, as well as a (fairly) consistent way to prevent the enemy Big Bad from touching your precious boats.
Overall, this list is a very tidy and efficient way to bring a combined arms approach to the KO style of play and it clearly paid off for Bee! Congratulations!

TOTAL POINTS: 2000/2000

Danny Wadeson: Vampires and their doggos are a winning formula, and this list in particular cleaves close to my own preferred list, centred around the King and Queen of Vyrkos. Belladamma still brings a huge amount of utility thanks to her exploding 6s aura spell – and Radukar who is fast, killy (especially with, you guessed it, excploding 6s!), and difficult to pin down thanks to his being -1 to hit.

MSU Dire Wolves as battleline also just never go out of fashion, and their ability to bodyguard Bella means she’s super survivable – remembering of course that Vyrkos have unique heroic actions to both bring wolves back and, once per game, summon another unit of 10 for some serious board control. A blob of 30 Deathrattle with their ability to return models at the start of ANY combat phase are going absolutely nowhere.

Finish off with the obligatory Grave Guard as the main hammer and a personal favourite in Blood Born for a cheeky 10″ pre-game move – and they’re no slouch in combat either – and you have an excellent board control list with some nicely distirbuted threats. Such a fun list and it’s good to see that it’s no longer overwhelming.

– 6 x Fellspear

TOTAL POINTS: (1990/2000)

Kieron Bailey: With the prevalence of Khorne and Null Myriad in the meta, combined with the challenge to magical dominance offered by Seraphon and various Nagash builds, the number of Tzeentch lists in the wild has dropped off somewhat as this GHB continues. One person who has continued to push around the servants of the Architect of Fate is the Lord of Change himself, Kaleb Walters. But while this list does still opt for Guild of Summoners for an extra battle tactic on command (summoning a Lord of Change), Kaleb’s customary Krondspine is absent from this list, replaced instead with 6 Varanguard.

In terms of the overall army construction, the army is a one-drop, allowing Kaleb to give away first in many matchups, get the enemy in range and then blast them with spells, maybe get the double and then do it all over again. The Varanguard might be able to activate three times in two turns due to their warscroll ability Relentless Killers. Being a one-drop is always a dilemma for Tzeentch as they need the casts to get the summoning points, but don’t really want to have that extra drop if they can avoid it. Kaleb’s elegant solution is to take two Magisters on Foot who can potentially cast two times each. Add the two casts from the Kairics, the two casts from the Lord of Change (with full re-rolls thanks to the Nine-Eyed Tome), the autocast Sigil from Arcane Armies and three fate points from Daemonspark, that’s twelve fate points to bring in that Lord of Change with.

The spells chosen also are a nod to the anti-magic of Khorne and Null Myriad as two out of three affect the Tzeentch units, therefore no spell ignores can be made. Shield of Fate can be put on the Varanguard, meaning that they have a 4+ ward against mortal wounds and a 5+ against all other wounds AND a spell ignore of a 4+ if the spell is cast while Kaleb has seven or more Destiny Dice. Add a Mystic Shield and All Out Defense and those Varanguard are a nightmare to get through. The chosen spell that affects others is the very flexible Arcane Suggestion that can shut off commands, subtract 1 from hit and wound rolls or subtract 1 from save rolls, maximising the impact of the charging Varanguard.

Other units that Kaleb have taken all complement the Varanguard well, with 42 ranged shots pummelling any screens and then 43 attacks from the run and charge Tzaangor finishing off whatever is left. While the Varanguard are not Disciples of Tzeentch so can’t auto charge with Destiny Dice, they certainly won’t have to be committed to taking out any chaff.

The list might be frustrated somewhat by hordes, but Suffocating Gravetide will help with that, in addition to the Sigil of Tzeentch and Bolt of Change from either of the Magisters popping up Spawns within 3″ of units that take damage. While the Spawns themselves probably won’t do a tonne of damage, they will pin those hordes in place if they aren’t killed in the ensuing combat phase.

All in all, a great twist on a Tzeentch list, congratulations to Kaleb and I’m now off to get some Varanguard off eBay!

TOTAL POINTS: (1970/2000)

Roland Rivera: Here’s an interesting Ironjawz list earning a podium result, which have been few and far between for the faction of late. Interestingly, it does not feature any of the units in the new Ironjawz supplement. What it does feature, however, is 4 big scary combat units in the Maw-krusha, 10 Brutes, and 2 units of 6 Gore-gruntas. Those units all have a ton of hitting power, and will put a hole in your opponent’s army if you deliver them properly.

The big combat units are complemented by an interesting selection of support Heroes. Warchanters are no surprise, of course, but a Weirdnob lets the list make use of primal dice offensively by giving the list a Hail Mary shot at Hoarfrost, which can be quite a potent offensive buff. Furthermore, it features an interesting Ally choice in Skragrott, which is decently durable, helps ease the burden on the list’s command points and has an interesting offensive spell.

The list is a bit light on chaff and other complementary units, but who needs that when you can just crash into the enemy with overwhelming force? That’s the approach this list took, and it seems to have done well.

CORE BATTALIONS
*Warlord
**Battle Regiment

TOTAL POINTS: 1940/2000

Carl Stokes: So this list is very much the classic approach to the Grundstock Regiment of Renown. You’ve got the thunderers, the gunhaulers to tote them around, and the khemists to turn them into unstoppable killing machines. Interestingly, there’s no admiral in the list, but they’re not very important here since you don’t have a flagship. A fast flying endrimmaster is an interesting addition, but since arcane tome lets him cast mystic shield on the thunderers and allows KO to get that sweet sweet magical dominance battle tactic, he’s an excellent dwarf-of-all-trades that can provide some flexibility in an otherwise very straightforward list.

The mechanics of this list are very straightforward and honestly, not particularly interesting. The army moves insanely fast (pre-nerf) and shoots harder than anything else in the game. A 50% chance to double the shots of 15 thunderers allows KO to ace basically any unit in the game. And then they get to try for double shots again during unleash hell…

What’s much more interesting is looking at the matchups and seeing what conclusions we can draw about this style of army and the KO book as a whole.

It’s no secret that KO is an extremely powerful book in a game that heavily emphasizes asymmetric threat extension (I hurt you and you’re not allowed to hurt me back) and movement (objectives, battle tactics, etc). This army of renown exemplifies the best of both worlds, where the cheapest boat in the book can ferry the largest threat in the book anywhere they need to go.

So let’s see how this played out:
Darkwalkers is an extremely interesting matchup where Frank would have had to do an excellent job balancing the removal of extremely mobile chaff units while still keeping his movement tight to avoid the ol’ “shaman rips a unit out of position where it then gets eaten by something scary” play that BoC specialize in. Here, I could see the flying endrinmaster really pulling his weight, being able to clear out ungor units while the thunderer blocks dare anything to get in blastin range. Gunhaulers are also excellent here, as they’re fantastic and blowing up squishy infantry units/characters.

Slaves to Darkness is an honest army (except for Belakor). Strong saves, good melee, and horribly unprepared for this KO build. Varanguard can’t do much against a double volley (possibly quadruple after unleash hell) from the thunderers, and gunhaulers can clear screens (with the endrinmaster).
Ironjawz, being the only loss, is also not surprising in the slightest. KO, as a book, is very susceptible to fast chunky melee threats, and that’s exactly what IJ are. Frank’s list doesn’t really play for the double turn and KO shooting is relatively short ranged, which means that being doubled by a Mawkrusha and friends could easily result in an unstoppable green tide sweeping away poor innocent dawi. IJ have enough movement and shenanigans to end up in combat immediately, and even a few surviving pigs can be an enormous threat to KO.

Slaanesh can’t really deal with massed 3+ armor units that outmove, outshoot, and outcompete them for objectives. D3 MW from temptation dice don’t matter to a 30 wound thunderer unit that just removes your army immediately.

And finally, seraphon can pose some trouble for traditional KO that rely on the admiral and maybe one khemist to make the army hum along. This is not traditional KO. I’d imagine pretty much anything seraphon brought to the table just got immediately removed by the thunderers and that sprinkling some mortal wounds around the units simply couldn’t reduce their efficacy in a meaningful way.

In short, although GW recognized that this army of renown was horribly unbalanced and made some sweeping changes to their power, it’s nice to see that we didn’t end up in a “10th ed Aeldari” situation with AoS. Good work to Admiral Sylvester for upholding the honor of the fleet and congratulations on a very successful Grundstock Expedition!

TOTAL POINTS: (2000/2000)

Kevin Lathers: This list is a what I like to call a “dual threat” list. A big block of Hearthguard Berserkers (HGB) to hold down an objective or two (dependent on map) and a Runefather with all the things in order to make him a single turn absolute monster where he will kill almost anything in the game.

This allows the list to function as a sort of split pushing list or as a castle army and capable of fluidly shifting between either. If the shield vulkites and/or HGB can shield the runefather until he has the right opening, he can remove the key pieces of the opponents army in one round of combat.

Of course, the list will struggle against anything with multiple smaller threats or anything that can not only ignore wards, but then effectively do huge damage to the HGB to instantly lift them (such as Sigvald!).

The inclusion of Elthwin’s thorns, instead of a second flamekeeper or Grimhold exile (run+charge on the HGB), is clearly for easy tactics. Fyreslayers struggle immensely with tactics and this can go a long way to shoring that up while also providing a mobile threat piece that opponents can’t just roam around doing whatever it wants.

TOTAL POINTS: 2000/2000

Roland Rivera: While at first glance this seems like an increasingly standard Bloodthirster-heavy Reapers of Vengeance list, look again – this one has some interesting choices made for its complementary units. First among those is the decision to make one of its support foot Heroes the General. This was likely done to maximize the benefit of the Skull Altar’s ability to reroll prayers for the Priest standing in it, as High Priest of Khorne means that the General will be able to chant 2 prayers per Hero phase.

Another interesting choice is the decision to bring not 1, but 2 Skull Cannons for ranged support. While those Cannons won’t be blowing up monsters or ripping chunks out of units, they are a source of chip damage that combines with other sources of chip damage in this army (the Slaughterpriest’s Blood Boil prayer, for example) to take down screens or soften up more expensive units before you crash in.

Last but not least, this build features a fun artefact on the Wrath of Khorne Bloodthirster in the Halo of Blood, which lets him strike first and drag either one of his big buddies into combat immediately. This could wreak havoc with your opponents in melee. All in all, a solid list, as reflected by the result.

Jon Anderson: Admittedly a bit of deja vu for me on this one, good friend of mine Mike Stewart has taken the building blocks of the Fuethan sharknado list I went undefeated with at Southern Fried Gaming Expo and improved upon it. Going undefeated and earning himself a ticket to represent England at the World Championships of Warhammer.

The changes to the Fuethan enclave in the most recent balance pass have seen a surge in the lists playability as well as representation. Who’d have thought that if you let people play the Jaws theme during deployment and offer them a reasonable path to victory that they’d flock to it. The reach of the list is almost unparalleled, with each of the satellite platforms shooting 24″ it’s easy to encircle your opponent and poke at their armor until the time is right.

At two drops and 1990 points letting Mike play for a wound triumph, the list is fairly straightforward in the list building stage. However, on the table, the list plays the current edition exceptionally well. Utilizing the Spellcasting Savant Grand Strategy is a questionable decision in a GT setting given her low wound count. However, in a teams environment, I think it has more play.

I’d like to see the Leviadons “Ancient” mount trait reduce all rend by 1 so that we could see some variety as I’m unsure ive ever seen it or “Denizen of the Darkest Depths” used.

Mike battled through a relatively stable field of opponents to earn his undefeated result, taking wins over: Beasts of Chaos, Sons of Behemat, Stormcast Eternals, Ogor Mawtribes, and Maggotkin of Nurgle. The pairings gods were undoubtedly in Mikes corner, and I couldn’t be happier for him.

Great list, and congratulations to Mike on the undefeated finish.

Overall this is a straightforward Sylvaneth, but I like it in the sense that it isn’t trying to be too clever. What it DOES do, is lean into the inherently exponential value of reinforcing its key pieces.

Unusually, they’ve opted for the Lancer variant of the bug-cavalry, which I find very interesting as conventional wisdom states that the recursion and general durability of Seekers makes them the preferred pick. But that’s the problem with conventional wisdom eh! Lancers have fight first of course, making them a much more offensively oriented unit, and I wonder if they operated in tandem with the also quite unusual reinforced Gossamids.

Gossamids are traditionally used as a fire’n’fade screen and good source of chip damage, but reinforcing them gives them fairly serious spike damage potential and makes them more resilient to chip damage – allowing for more rally dice and whatnot. Potentially they were used to keep up with the Lancers as a mobile (and horribly frustrating to charge) screen, and then hang around nearby for a legit unleash hell threat after a Lancer charge.

The other pieces in the list are just good old fashioned value and aren’t going out of fashion anytime soon, but overall a fairly unusual Sylvaneth list that clearly did the business, showing there’s life in some oft-maligned units yet!

**Regiment of Renown

TOTAL POINTS: (1950/2000)

Pete Brizio smashed out a strong 4-1 with Sons of Behemat guest-starring Braggit’s Bottle-Snatchaz. Although we live on opposite sides of the world, I consider Pete a personal friend: we both love Destro armies and sneakers (I prefer Adidas and he’s more into Nike), and I’ve occasionally found that people think we are one and the same person despite me never having played a game of Warhammer on English soil. The confusion is possibly not helped by the fact that I run the Plastic Craic blog and Pete B was briefly a member of the writing team over there.

So, for clarity: I’m Peter Atkinson, and this 4-1 was achieved by Pete Brizio. I’m the one that runs Plastic Craic. He’s the one that runs the Just Roll 6s Twitch stream. So that’s Pete A and Pete B, or maybe you could call him Beta Peter.

So, how does the list work? As we noted when these guys first dropped, Sons of Behemat is the natural home for this Regiment of Renown both in terms of maximizing the positive tech that the Regiment brings, and shoring up inherent weaknesses in Sons of Behemat:

  • The wee man makes Monsters run and charge, and the whole of your army is Monsters.  Easy to miss on the first read through, but it triggers each time you pick a Monster – so they all will benefit.
  • The big knock on the Rabble Rowza is that moving towards him all the time really works more smoothly when you can teleport him up the field.  The Regiment just lets you dump him there and crack on.
  • Gobbapalooza gives two casts and unbinds so you can pump out Mystic Shield and some clutch unbinds with your PMDs (in addition to any you might get from Arcane Tome).  Their own warscroll spells (for CA disruption and a neg 1 to hit aura) are dope, too.
  • This is all in addition to each of the units in the Regiment just being quite good in their own right.

What we really love about this Regiment in Sons is that it gives you a couple of things the army is crying out for:

  • Screens. You get screens.
  • A couple of Battle Tactics are unlocked. This is crucial for Sons of Behemat, whose book tactics are somewhat crap.

The following BTs become significantly easier with the Bottle-Snatchaz:

Magical Dominance. Otherwise impossible without Arcane Tome, and you often don’t want to shove a full quarter of your army on the backboard out of unbind range.

Intimidate the Invaders. You have full control over how many units pop up outside of your territory, and it also makes it easier to get your mid-paced Giants wholly out too. 10” isn’t that fast when they’re dragging a 5” base behind them and need to get wholly outside; so running and charging gives you the extra movement from doing both (making it more probable), as well as removing the cost to the army of running for your BT and then wasting their output because you can’t charge (making it more desirable).

Surround and Destroy: Similar to above, this just flows so much better with the Bottle-Snatchaz because of how you’re allocating your resources around the board. You can probably run a couple of Megas far enough (but only probably), and then have ~1000 points standing around on board edges scratching their arses, instead of being where they want to be which smashing stuff on objectives. Mancrushers with their 8” base move are an even worse bet. So yes, you can score it with pure Giants, but it’s both far easier and far less disruptive to your army’s flow if you use the Bottle Snatchaz to do it instead.

So that’s the Regiment of Renown and why you use it. That leaves you 1500 points for a bunch of Giants, and given the fragility of the Gloomspite units, you really need these guys to anchor the list and dominate the primaries. For that reason, Pete has gone with the the Crouching Gargant, Hidden Stonehorn build we talked about when the book dropped.

Doubling him up with the 40-wound giga-chad, King Brodd himself continues that theme, and that leaves one slot. I’d probably go for the really basic option here and chuck in a Gatebreaker with Amulet of Destiny, but Pete’s gone for the Kraken-eater with Mystic Shield. Take your pick, but that’s the template: 3 Megas plus the Bottle-Snatchaz, in a two-drop package with an extra Artefact available.

Is it more competitive than Brodd’s Stomp? Possibly, but I don’t think there’s much in it. I prefer the latter because there’s still something cool about an army of nothing but Megas – that’s a major part of the appeal of running Sons for a lot of people – and it pisses me off no end that so many pieces of faction terrain can be Smashed to Rubble with little to no impact on their core functionality (because it’s written into the Battle Traits rather than the warscroll). So, for me there’s a lot of value in physically bouncing Gnawholes or Gnarlmaws off your opponent’s head, but I reluctantly accept that doesn’t necessarily make the army better. Adidas are still better than Nike though.

Carl Stokes: Here we have a look at the power of the (pre-errata) Grundstock Expeditionary Force. Obviously, the way this army plays has changed a great deal, but the core mechanics remain relatively unchanged. By giving up any attempt at close combat, this entire army gets to shoot twice on a 4+ EVERY time they make a shooting attack. Unleash hell? Regular shooting? Yeah, that’s two opportunities to hit that sweet sweet 4+ and turn your opponent’s models into a fine haze of plastic and resin.
Bringing 25 thunderers means that you’ll have the ability to concentrate overwhelming firepower basically anywhere on the table and 3 units means that you’re really shooting with approximately 38 “thunderer equivalents” since you’ll have 3 chances to roll a 4+ in the shooting phase. That’s… a lot of damage.

In the pre-errata world, these thunderer units could be teleported around the battlefield by the grundstock haulers, giving them unparalleled maneuverability and guaranteeing that there’d be no escape from their guns. Thankfully, this has since been changed. Even without the teleporting tricks, 4 gunhaulers (shooting as 6 gunhauler equivalents) can provide a great deal of supporting fire and character hunting to help clear out the smaller units you wouldn’t want to waste a round of shooting from the thunderers on.

Otherwise, this list goes as light as possible on the characters, bringing an anti-magic navigator that lets the thunderers rally on a 4+, and a khemist to make their shooting that much more deadly.

This list lives and dies by its shooting, so any lists that can bring a strong anti-shooting item/trait is going to be extremely hard to deal with. Things like aura of sterility present an almost insurmountable obstacle for this style of army, and fast chunky monsters can also be a challenging matchup. That being said, there are few problems that can’t be solved by an unreasonable volume of fire, and it’ll be interesting to see where the Grundstock Expeditionary Force ends up in this post-errata world.
