Top Three AoS Lists for March to War

This is the top three AoS lists for the March to War that took place in the UK on the 21st and 22nd of January. It involved 30 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5-game tournament.

This list was using old points – with updated points, it’ll run about 150 ish over. Wonder if three Ironblasters will get the job done instead of four!

All credit to Luke, however, who’s a great player from the illustrious Team LIT – Sylvaneth, Disciples, and LRL – would all have been tricky match ups too. Be curious to see what he can do with the big bois in the new season!

Mathmallow is back with the tree attack! His list is considerably different to the one he went 5-0 with recently – variety is the spice of life after all.

He’s dropped big momma and her chad-stag for the absolute bare minimum of an HQ – taking just a Warsong rev, tricked out with magic boosting enhancements to provide a MW cannon.

He invests the points savings into a mahoosive Revenant Seeker blob – reasoning (no doubt correctly) that this will just be an unkillable swarm of half anvil-half-hammer models.

The usual 2x tree revs for scoring. and his trademark 5 Gossamids make up most of the rest of the list, leaving just enough room for a little addition…Gotrek! He doesn’t show up much these days but having played against him in another Sylvaneth list, I can tell you that a psychotic, murderous and nigh on unkillable dwarf marching up the mid-board while stuff teleports and flies around you is rather a tricky proposition.

Losing only to Churchus’ cannonade, it’s a nasty, eggs-in-two-baskets Sylvaneth list that I can see being hugely oppressive to play against. Sylvaneth players would do well to take a leaf out of this book!

‘Ere we go, ‘ere we go, ‘ere we go again. All of the Dragon Ogres all of the time. Doubling down with our favourite Tzaangors on Discs (ToDs) to zoom about the place and lay some extra hurt down with the last flourish of Bounty Hunters. A couple of Ungor screens to hold off the eager. The list is built around the Dragon Ogre Shaggoths, moving up and buffing the Dragon Ogres while the ToDs and Cockatrice zip around scoring (or for the ToDs removing tasty snacks). Lots of threats, not a lot of fat. The list isn’t relying on summoning (no large units of sacrifices) but will still earn primordial points fast enough to summon a few times in an average match, particularly with the Cockatrices ability to pick up extra. Geminids backed by Master of Magic is a clever inclusion. It’s a great spell used for it’s ability to block areas as much as what it does.

A surprise 3rd round loss to the Beastclaw Raiders, surprise, mostly because you never see 5 of the big fellas together. With buffs, though, the Stonehorn are very tacky, have lots of wounds, and hit hard enough to remove most or all of Nick’s units in single turn. The screens are ripe to be torn apart before the charge as well, with the limited attack high damage range of the Beastclaws. Otherwise, he saw off most of the meta challenges (IJ ironsunz may not be meta… yet).

Missing the Incarnate and Purple Sun of previous Kharadron lists, James has chosen to give his Dwarves fight on death (on a 4+). This Kharadron list wants to mix it up. And shoot. Doubling down on that approach is the Admiral with Flaming Weapon giving him a Rend -2, 4 damage weapon. With one company of Arkanauts in Eternal Conquerors to act as bodyguards for the Admiral and probably some bait. It gets around an issue for Kharadron in holding objectives, particularly early, when they want to be in the air if possible. Otherwise, the remainder of the list is around their considerable shooting, giving a superior “overwatch” for the ground units. Mostly, that seems to have worked especially into the slower armies, but fire and fade appears to have been an issue.

His last round was a real life shoot out at the ok coral, with the Underguts bringing only Leadbelchers and Ironblasters versus the gunships. Scoring was low across the board, and neither would have much left by the end.

Regular readers of this column (and if you’re not – why??) may remember some previous 1st place Ogor lists – and they may also recall that my response to them is, at kindest, best called ‘sassy’.

Well, dear reader, I hope you like your sass piled high. Because even after the recent minor points hikes, we’re still looking down the meaty barrel of three giant shooting platforms with a 30″ 2x 4/2/-2 for D3+3 dmg (and +1 rend for 3 total in Underguts) profile and an arguably even scarier ‘short range’ (i.e. 12″ with a 9″ move factoring in the new Hungry rule) profile for 10 attacks at 3/3/-2/2 (that’s inc. Underguts bonus). Sass is my coping mechanism.

They’re supported by the typical 20 Gnoblar blob that do mortals (even post-FAQ…) each time you end any kind of move near them, 2 units of rend 2 Leadbelchers and a blob of Gluttons so greedy they’re prepared to literally eat lead – at least that’s my head-canon for why missile attacks are -1 to wound into them.

Rounding things off are a sneaky Bloodpelt Hunter, a support Butcher and the typical enhancement stacked Stonehorn – in this instance a lesser known Huskard, who enjoys a -1 to hit in melee ability, a healing prayer a +1 to wound prayer and the perennial Rockmane Elder mount trait for -1 to wound – good luck killing him, you’re going to need it.

Andrew’s route to 5-0 included the famously weak in melee Idoneth, that Kruleboyz faction with the rubbish rule that you can’t see them beyond 12″, a newly-extremely-expensive Thunder Lizard list, some Stormcast (who I imagine the Ogors opening like tin-cans) and the notoriously easy to kill Nurgle.

In all seriousness, gratz to Andrew as those were likely some tough opponents to beat out with such an elite army, but Ogors definitely still have the tools to continue their ravenous rampage it seems.

It’s Beasts of Chaos with 9 Enlightened on Disks. What do you want me to say? Their new book is about a month away, which will hopefully give me something new to write about.

It’s just all so old and janky. They get their own stuff, possibly the old Chaos stuff (depending on whether the event was allowing the technically illegal until yesterday Slaves tome) and the best of the new Tzeentch stuff, all propped up by a wildly over-tuned Tome Celestial.

GW are looking down from their ivory tower at these lists and holding their noses while the new book slowly hoofs its way into public existence to shake its wiry mane and proclaim, ‘Beasts are dead! Long live Beasts!’ Only they decided not to update the model range because fugly models are the price you pay for putting lipstick on a pig-monster. Pearls before swine? This metaphor is as broken and mixed up as the Beasts book itself.

The Scarlet Doom terror strikes again, ticking all of the boxes, 50 Bladegheists, Myrmourn Banshees for spell shenanigans Spirit Hosts for Bodyguards, and Hexwraiths for mobility and a cast of minor, interesting heroes. The Grimghast are rarer, and there are no Chainrasps to the disappointment of true Nighthaunt fans. For anyone who doesn’t know this list, it will flow across the board, ignoring your high quality, high rend attacks, and striking fear into your units. With Hexwraiths to take any exposed objectives. The Guardian of Souls and Spirit Torments will return models (mostly to the Bladegheist) each turn, and Krulghast is an auto include for his damage reduction.

It controls the centre well, holding a back objective as well and ticks off Battle Tactics (or did, Season 2 might be different). However, if an opponent can lift one of Bladegheist units in a turn, then this army will struggle. To do that reliably, you need a lot of relatively low quality attacks (1 damage). Unfortunately, the 2nd (Tempestors and Drakes) and 5th (Dragon Ogres) round opponents had the means to shut down our heroes. Great performance and another army it will be interesting to see how they go in Season 2 after being a clear leader in the last 6 months.

Some real surprises here, a magic heavy (for Stormcast) list with 3 big heroes backed by a single big hammer unit and solid screens. There are not a lot of units, but extreme mobility/flexibility, and it does away with the need for a teleport in the list. The Drakesworn Templar works either as a hammer or an anvil for the Fulminators. With his ranged attacks (Unleash Hell) and the Tempest Axe reducing pile-ins, he is a dangerous anvil that takes serious force to move with a 4+ save. With the points drop in the latest GHB, we might see more of him. And if castled near the Slann (18”) he is granting +1 to cast on top of the Slann’s +1. With plenty of ranged Mortal wounds on offer (Comet’s Call, Burning Head and Everblaze Comet), this is a surprisingly deadly ranged army. Celestial Blades to give the Fulminators a well-deserved 2+ to wound.

The tricks don’t end there, Stormkeep making the Liberators effectively Galletian Veterans (count as 3 on objectives) while still in a Battle Regiment – Scions isn’t really useful in this list. Hammers of Sigmar for the blue and gold and a handy 6+ ward on objectives. Along with Call to Aid to return a unit of Liberators if necessary. And finally, there is the Celestant-Prime to remove something important and the equally mobile Farstriders. A very cheap unit with an inbuilt teleport. They aren’t likely to do a lot of damage, but they have a 12” range attack as well as melee, potentially creating a lot of issues for a lightly defended point. All of this is just to say this is a very flexible army that is difficult to counter. Reflecting that approach, Stu had 4 very close games, only losing or winning by a handful of points, tense close fought battles. This list would do well in a teams format, and with a little luck, it could have gone 5 and 0 (the 2 loses were by 1 and 3 pts). With the new GHB here now, it would be interesting to see where this list goes,

Danny: When you take the new Ogor book to an 8 player, xmas themed event, you are essentially roleplaying. The Mawtribes like it best where its chilly, they love a good ol’ festive feast, and they have lots of reindeer Stonehorns to pull fat men with beards into the action, delivering ‘presents’ as necessary, and claiming their cookies’n’milk tithe as they go. It’s the only explanation for their being 3 OM players – just under half the field.

Thomas’s interpretation of the christmas myth packs 3 big beasties – who, let’s be honest, just generally ram into you and do very bad things in a variety of slightly different ways. They’re backed up by Yhetees who can run and charge while within 15″ of a Thundertusk, and are eligible to fight within 6″ – and two more non-hero murder-reindeer. Boy oh boy does this list want to deliver you your presents, forcibly and fast! Hope his opponents felt festive while being very roughly sleighed!

Patrick: The fact that half the lists at this event where the new golden child of AoS goes to show how versatile the Idoneth can be. The standard Murderking and Namarti Reavers are present, keeping the core of the army to a consistently powerful turn 2 and 3. This list would see a major advantage at an Ogor-heavy event, since the Ironblasters can’t take you off the table turn 1 if you aren’t on the table to begin with. A relatively small cadre of units will start on the board, while Briomdar allows the Soulscryer to keep three units to the side, who can come in at an advantageous moment.

This list deviates from the norm by taking advantage of some strong reinforcement units. The Scinari Loreseeker is going to make life difficult since it can be deployed up the board turn one, and at 160pts makes a decent sacrificial unit, since any ranged attacks would have to target him. His distance from the rest of the army also means that he’s siting on a 3+ save, and if he deploys in cover and uses all-out-defense he’s on a 3+ ignoring 2 points of Rend. The Fulminators round out the list by providing a relatively quick, tough unit that can consistently deal mortal wounds, which is something that Idoneth lack.

Overall this list has a high skill level to play well, but Kieron played well, and I imagine frutrated their opponents to no end.

Danny: Now, Leighton has opted for a slightly different kind of Christmas spirit, choosing to deliver coal to all the naughty children on the other side of the board from afar with great prejudice, from 3 Ironblasters and a unit of Leadbelchers, in the sub-faction that gives extra rend to ranged attacks, which let’s just say doesn’t take a tactical genius to see the appeal of.

In his defense, he also definitely does not leave the elves on the shelf (well, they’re more like mountain goblins but you get my drift) capable of doing d3 mortals to stuff within 6″ at the end of any move action, which the recent FAQ decided was clearly easily understood by all and not in the least bit troubling on a 20 body 100 pt unit.

A Stonehorn is also there because why wouldn’t you? And he’s got a Butcher for company, whipping up all the trimmings for those hungry Ironguts and packing Blubbergrub Stench, allowing Rhinox units to be treated as Monsters, which gives them all sorts of cool shit. Oh – did you forget that Ironblasters are pulled by Rhinoxes? Oh yes – now they roll dice equal to their charge roll + 2 and do MWs on 6s after pumping you full of lead, just in case a small part of your body was still twitching, cold and alone in the dirt.

Also 2 units of Ironguts waddle around just obliterating anything they get into combat with with 3 rend 2 damage 3 attacks each and a once per game double fight.

I wonder if GW just really wanted to see lots of Ogors around xmas (and under various xmas trees, preferable wrapped up…) because it certainly is their season!!

Brett: When the book dropped I thought we’d see a lot more Lofnir/Magmadroth lists, but it seems Lofnir lodge hid it’s secrets well. Greyfyrd is a bit more common, probably down to the difficulty in assembling 3 to 6 Magmadroths. Runeson on a Magmadroth is battleline in Lofnir, there are 4 battlelines in the army. They’re expensive, but a Magmadroth has as many wounds as a Mawcrusha (18), and have a better breath weapon. But their damage output isn’t as impressive. And the Runeson is no Megaboss. In Lofnir each Magmadroth gains a mount trait (up to 3 anyway) and they come with burning blood just in case you wound 1 in melee. The biggest advantage of Lofnir and Magmadroths is the additional mobility they bring. But that mobility makes it easy to outstrip your support (Vulkites and Runemaster). If you aren’t careful it’s easy for an army to engage each as separate pieces instead of an army.

The same is true of Gotrek, great model but with only 4″ of movement he can be played around. And that slow movement means scoring is hard and they are vulnerable to shooting. Jon lost to 2nd and 3rd who had a lot of firepower. Jon also drew with Rob in his 3rd round, notable against Tzeetch. Durable with some fun tricks it will be interesting to see what the next GHB offers Fyreslayers who don’t love the current missions and Galletian Veterans. With very few warscrolls the centre of most armies with either Vulkites (1W with a 4+ save) or Hearthguard (2W, 4+ save) who suffer against bounty hunters.

Declan: New book 5-0… take a bow Mike Wendel. I mean Mike’s a good player before a new book and this has done nothing but help… but he’s not paid attention to the Internet so only 1 Ironblaster (doesn’t he know that 4 are needed).

This list is actually very similar to some pre book release but with the benefits that they’ve all gained. It’s great to see Ogor Gluttons now being used. They are great models and the reach (2″) means they can now contribute in a fight. Mike has made them and the Mournfang Bounty Hunters as well so not a lot of Galatian Veterans are standing their way.

Add to this the stonehorn and 3×2 Frost Sabres and he’s got another hammer unit and some cats which just have to be killed, although you really want to concentrate on tue big guys.

So, how to beat it… well at this stage don’t get drawn against Mike is a great start, but as with everything target priority, screens and keep your eyes on the battle tactics. You don’t have to kill it all to win! (Although it would help!)

Declan: Well Solomon has definitely paid attention to the Nighthaunt release. Step 1 find the best scroll in the book (Bladegheists) step 2 assemble 60 of then, step 3 charge! What’s truly impressive here is he’s got through 60 of them without wanting to throw the whole army away! A true test of patience.So don’t think you’ll out wait Soloman…. the patience of a bird watcher lies in his soul! (Probably big vicous birds of prey… or seagulls!)

As I’ve said before be careful of the charge and the retreat and charge and the characters… in fact this army is just screaming for you to take the 4 Ironblasters and shoot it off the board. And that’s the limitation of this army. It’ll smash Kragnos off tur board, but struggles against serious shooting. Is that good for the meta? I don’t know but it’s an interesting way to balance them.

Brett: It’s Ben Hur with dragons down to the chariots having priests to whip them into a frenzy before the race. 6 Chariots, how do you even deploy them all, you don’t you can always bring them from the heavens with Scions of the Storm. Anchored by Liberators and the Relictors (for teleports) but the rest of the army moves a minimum of 10″. Tempestors can be played a few ways being mobile but the dual ranged weapons can’t be ignored. They can be translocated and shoot you before tempting you charge as well and they are pretty durable. And that’s the trick here, for a Stormcast Army this is a lot of wounds (128) most of which has a 3+ save and is really durable. Itcan take objectives quickly and tie up multiple units.

There’s nothing that will do a lot of damage in a turn but it takes a lot to kill a chariot (12W) and they can wear down a unit over a couple of turns after their initial impact hits with their 11 attacks. Call for Aid is the Holy Command really giving the list 3 units of Liberators. The HQs are unusual, only the 2 Relictors, the General is built for both offense and defense with Divine Light (reroll hit rolls of one) and Thundershock (subtract 1 from opposing wound rolls from one Unit). Colin dropped only one game (against Tzeetch whose spells would have been very effective) and even beat second. Solik\d, maybe a bit dour but an effective list that is hard to play into. Your best options are to exploit the thin screens and try to tie up the Chariots. Stop the charges if you can.

Patrick: Ossiarch are in a tough spot, completitvely. Anyone who has played them (or against them) knows that the Bonereapers aren’t really playing the same version of AoS that everyone else is, and that isn’t a good thing. Their competitive win rate sits just below the 45% “happy zone.”

That being said, Alan led them to the top 10 at this event, and showed off one of the more straightforward lists, and how it can be effective. Starting off, Petrifex Elite is an excellent subfaction to improve the resiliency of the army, reducing the rend of all incoming attacks by 1. Then you have Arkhan the Black, who can pull double duty by being an effective support wizard and also reviving destroyed models.

And there will be plenty of models destroyed! With 60 Morteks pressed into a Bounty Hunters battalion, these units will crawl across the board, steadily increasing the threat presence on the battlefield. They will benefit strongly from the fact that they are Gallatian Vets, getting to fight in two ranks, and with their small bases you can expect to see at least 10 models from a unit getting to make their attacks.

Countering the army’s slow pace, there are two units of Deathriders led by a Liege-Kavalos to help screen objectives and push some damage back on the opponent. The predator will arrive bound to Arkhan, targeting an enemy hero and giving the opponent one more threat to worry about. The Mortek Crawler also assists in pushing the threat range of the army by providing some much needed ranged damage while the Guard keeps the opponent in place.

Ed: This is typical of the kind of lists we’ve been seeing since the new Lumineth Realmlords tome. It is tricky to run properly as Teclis has a whopping 18 spells to choose from and takes up so much of your points that what’s left really has no room to make mistakes. You need to know your rules inside and out – not a list for players who take 10 mins to read their warscrolls each round! However, the versatility of Teclis coupled with the hardiness and output of his Alarith entourage can accomplish a great deal even with so few models on the board.

Avalenor is a certified beatstick, especially with his pet stonemage in tow keeping him on top bracket for as long as possible. He and Teclis have the ability to dictate the course of the battle, while the Stoneguard will do most of the actual heavy lifting. Even as Galletian Veterans, Stoneguard are hardy anvils which gain a 4+ ward against mortal wounds while contesting an objective they control and the ability to ignore rend of -1 and -2! Plus in the Expert Conquerers battalion they count as 3 per model, meaning their hold over that objective and access to their ward are extra secure. They’re not too bad on the offensive either, though certainly the support from Avalenor and Teclis is crucial.

Then there are the Tree Revenants. A cheeky little unit that can pop up in unexpected places and secure objectives without much investment. It forces your opponent to play a little defensively and deploy their forces in less than ideal positions to prevent a catastrophic backdoor teleports. Even if they don’t steal an objective or assassinate a vulnerable unit, just having them on the board can be worth it for how it changes your opponent’s behaviour in your favour. I can’t speak highly enough of these guys as a list filler for any order faction who can ally them in.

It’s a brilliant list, clearly played excellently to have reached first place. But time is running out to make use of it! With a new GHB just around the corner, and Expert Conquerors/Bounty Hunters almost certainly about to disappear will similar builds continue to reach the top of the podium?

Brett: The current Big Bad of AoS according to many threads, as always shooting is effective and controversial. The increase in range for the Leadbelchers (to 18″) means it’s a lot easier for them to stand still. Standing still now guarantees 2 shots (2D3 v 1D6), not a lot but it’s significantly more damage. Ironblasters long range shot moving to a guaranteed 4 damage at 30″ with -2 Rend and doubling the number of shots is a huge deal. Their Hail Shot (10 shots, Rend -1, D2) is effective in Unleash hell and both units are solid melee damage dealers as are their Leaders. Fittingly for Ogors they are tough (4+ save) multiwound (4W for Leadblechers and 9W for Ironblasters) models who also tank well. With multiple small units they also blunt the counter strike and limit carry over damage.

With two effective (and cheap) screens in the Gnoblars (who aren’t even GV) to keep opponents out of your hair, it’s a challenge to take apart. Only the event’s 1st place managed to do so in the 3rd round, a match up of the new tomes, with the Stoneguard coming out on top. Scoring 20 in 3 rounds it looks like Adrian might have tabled his opponents frequently, certainly a chance with this sort of shooting.

Patrick: What a strange list, and yet here we are in the top 3. Fuethan opens up the ability to take Allopexes as Battleline as well as bringing in Bloodthirsty Shivers (which gain some bonus attacks if they are within a certain distance of one another). In Jordi’s Case, they have opted to take three squads of 2 without bringing any Shivers at all. Allopexes are already excellent “independent operator” units, and placing them in a Bounty Hunters battalion improves their ability to clear objectives, allowing for the slower Namarti to move in.

Speaking of Namarti, Jordi has brought 2 units, both fairly small. 30 Reavers spread across 2 units is decent if you’re pushing for a skirmish force, but the frailty of the Namarti will sting if anything focuses on them for very long. The Soulscryer’s ability to deep-strike will allow all of the Namarti to start the game off the board, which would allow for better early survival.

The final unit is an Eidolon general, bringing the Arcane Tome and Endless Sea Storm. The Eidolon innately has full re-rolls for casting, unbind, and dispelling, and Endless Sea Storm allows the ability to cast an additional spell for each successful casting attempt with a result greater than 7. The Eidolon has some solid warscroll spells, and with these upgrades he becomes a high-quality support hero that will do a lot to keep the Allopexes alive.

Brett: Straight forward enough, the foot heroes provide a 4+ ward (in Greyfyrd) and can use their prayer (heal) to get the Hearthguard close enough to charge. The triple reinforced Hearthguard averages 10 mortal wounds (MW) in addition to their normal damage. Both Hearthguard are Expert Conquerors to give some solid objective play for really elite army. This is a great way to play into the current meta and try to deal with long range shooting. The primary hammers have the option of rending or non rending weapons to manage armies like Nighthaunt and the Vulkites are a risk for melee army with their fight on death.

As always though there are trade offs, this is such a slow army that you might be better to not engage the central castle forcing them to come to your or spread. Either works giving you the chance to weaken them piecemeal. Score wise I think that lack of movement may have cost him dearly.

Pre-Tournament Analysis

I thought I’d add a bit about the meta at the event before we jump into the meat of the article. If this is popular I’ll continue doing this on future top three articles.

Below shows the players already ranked in our Woehammer rankings form events before the Bristol GT.

11 Players had already taken part in 1 GT before this event, with the highest ranked player (Luke Churchus) being 22nd in the UK. Remeber these rankings are based on our own handicapped rankings system explained here.

Faction Breakdown

The Bristol Brawl saw an unusually high number of Daughters, Blades of Khorne and Slaanesh armies, with all three seeing double their expected representation based on the current worldwide meta.

On the flip side of this, the tournament saw no representation from Ironjawz, Slaves, Cities, Kharadron and Big Waagh where we would have expected at least one army to be present.

Of the high win rate factions Beast of Chaos and Disciples are as expected while Ogor Mawtribes and Soulblight see a slightly higher number than compared to the meta.

Declan: Greg has been using Nagash since AoS3 dropped, and quite a bit before that. In early AoS3, there was a period we met 3 or 4 times and he beat me every time with a Soulblight version…. here he has taken Nighthaunt instead which allows him to use the Nighthaunt alleginace abilities on the charge and back it up with Nagash’s magic dominance.

When they charge the Bladegheists are almost certain to roll 4+ and get one of the debuffs on the table. But the truly frightening thing is that these debuffs stack. I’m not a fan of the mechanism, but it’s the core of how Nighthaunt work and it is scary when a 10+ is rolled followed by a few 8+ (because you can always go down the table).

There’s no denying that Nagash is the centrepiece though and – although he is seen as weaker in the last update – he can still take on an army (and at 955 points he needs to). I’d love to tell you how to kill him, but the truth is I still don’t know but I imagine it’s got something to do with mortal wounds (preferably at range). It’s definitely not a Mangler Squig (last time I charged one in, I did no wounds to Nagash).

If you’ve not met him before he lives up to his role as the Lord of the Undead… with 8 spell casts, all with bonuses and the piece de la resistance… Arcane Bolt as many times as you like. (see you’ll be glad you brought the ranged mortal wounds. He’s a beast and sometimes the best thing to do is get ahead on points, stand on objectives and hope he and the Bladegheists can’t shift you. Good luck; you’ll need it!

Edit: The maximum number of Magmadroths you can take in a Lofnir list is six, not five as the comment below eludes to.

Ethan: This Lofnir list leans on heavy on the idea that more is more, taking as many magmadroths as you can fit in 2000 points. It’s obviously an effective strategy, having worked out well for Alex, with his only loss being Hagg Nar where I can only predict Morathi’s unkillable rules made for a major issue for an army so light on units.

Danny: Andy helped me out with our Ogor Tome Review – so it’s awesome and very interesting to see him go 4-1 and 3rd at this highly competitive event – WITHOUT cannons or Gnoblars. Andy has basically stuck with this tried and tested core of a Frostlord backed by Kragnos – the big(ger) man offering 3d6 charges for those sweet 3d6 MWs on the charge, along with a huge pressure piece while the Frostlord, specced out with Arcane Tome + Flaming weapon for more reliable damage and Touched by the Everwinter to also make him a priest with the ability to heal himself – or Kragnos. So he’s doing it all. Another ‘big cow’ joins the pressure party as the first battleline pick.

Two units of Mournfang fill out the tax, allowing for some excellent objective play, hardly inconsiderable damage and their new and improved resistance to shooting attacks.

Andy also included a Butcher for some utility spell casting and to babysit the mawpot, although he informed me that he regretted including him overall as he always ended up out of range to be useful and felt like wasted points overall.

Andy had a tough route to 4-1, remaining on top table most of the event, taking a big win against IDK to kick off, followed by a tough Blood Knight list, then the Kroak list that beat me, a grudge match over the ‘new’ 4x Ironblaster + leadbelcher Ogor list before finally losing to the event’s winner Greg. The amount of pressure this list can put out can clearly only be resisted by unrendable ghosts with Nagash bringing loads back and shunting fistfuls of MWs through Kragnos’ 2+ save – definitely a counter to what is otherwise clearly a list that very few armies in the game can really withstand.

Danny: It me! First things first, I’m working on an in-depth tourney report including some deeper thinking on my list and a breakdown of the games, so for now I’ll give you the digest of HOW the list works rather than get bogged down in the why.

It’s relatively simple – a twist on the Morathi on the bowsnakes. I took 15 spears and 10 bows to lean more heavily into the reliable MWs. Witch aelves are a cheap screen and battleline pick with bladed bucklers for some hopeful clutch saves and mortal wound bouncing. I took Ironscale to make the sneks battleline and enable the run+charge for some key threat projection, but also because I wanted Hagg Nar to speed up Blood Rites, which saves me loads of CP and helps Morathi perform a lot better in early rounds (when she’s still alive!)

This event didn’t allow book battle tactics, so instead of a 2nd squad of Khinerai, I opted for Shadowstonkers, who are also just a relatively tanky and super mobile scoring piece.

Jaws rounds out the list as a spare point filler and another source of MWs against slower targets that my spear sneks might be scared or unable to get into. It’s all wrapped up in a one drop bat reg because this list really, really wants to avoid getting doubled. Of course, sometimes you come up against another 1 drop in round 5 and lose the roll-off….more on that and other exciting, brain-melting moments in my full report.

Want to say a quick but big kudos to both the organisers (Alex and Jonny) from our club, Sigmar’s Pilgrims, and to all my opponents and everyone else there – it was a hugely competitive field but the vibe was friendly and jolly as all hell – a fantastic, super hard fought event!

Patrick: When the Ogor Mawtribes Battletome was released it was a fair assumption that some unit spamming/abuse would come out of the new book. Tobias made this assumption as well and decided to test the waters by dropping as many Ironblasters as he could on the table. “Ironblasters are awesome,” Tobias told me. “I’m not playing Ogors because I want to play greenish stunted gitz… So none of that in my list.” He is also taking advantage of the -1 to wound from Rockmane Elder, providing some extra beef on the Stonehorn.

His Ironblasters played well into all of his matchups, although with some minor difficulty into Idoneth Deepkin due to shooting restrictions that the army carries with it. His Ironblasters killed Bloab Rotspawn in the first round of his second match. Two units firing the long range shot were able to remove him from across the table, and went on to table his Nurgle opponent by the bottom of round 2. “They will be a meta pick. If I had a big event I’d run them, but they weren’t great fun.” It may be too early to say if the warscroll needs some adjustments, but I think at the very least we will see a points increase in the future.

Congratulations to Tobias on his win, and we hope to see more lists from him in the future (the upcoming Cherokee GT, perhaps?).

Patrick: “After narrowing down to Soulblight, I went back and forth between a horde of Zombies and Skeletons and a mixed armes list like we have ssen across the meta. However, I thought ‘I own 25 Blood Knights,’ why not run all of them.” And run them, he did, to great effect. The list sees Manfred and a Vengorian Lord bringing buffs and spellcasting to round out his list, as well as some Expert Conqueror Skeletons for objective maintenance. Manfred’s base size came in especially handy due to his unique command ability, providing +1 to hit and wound wholly within 12”. His base size and careful positioning meant that Stuart could have at least 2 units of 10 knights with 2+/2+, -1 rend, and 2-3 damage lances.

Belladomma works to provide a quality fighter to deal with chaff units. Her ability to turn salin models into Dire Wolves worked in Stuart’s favor to keep the board saturated with threats, and can be used to bait an opponent’s dispel attempt to make room for casting from Mannfred and the Vengorian Lord.

Patrick: Jake’s Nurgle list was tooled to the event. “With Prize of Gallet on the list it was going to be incredibly hard to score if I went first.” This meant that he had to break away from his original list (which included no Galletian Veterans) and build in two units of Plaguebearers. They are cheaper than Blightkings, and in this instance would perform the same duty. That left three units of flies, one to deep strike with the Lord of Affliction and one to Drowned Men across the table and lock his opponent down.

Jake feels that some better deployment of Bloab could have kept him alive longer. Ravenak’s Gnashing Jaws would have done a lot of work into Tobias’s chaff units, and he may have been able to get a better performance in the third round. “Mawtribes are gross now,” he told me, but he is happy with the list and his performance. “The list did what I expected it too. Flies and Jaws eat the grunts and you aim the Maggoth lords at their heroes.”

He made some final notes in our conversation as well. “Nurgle is fine, the thing that bothers me the most is the lists that are winning are the same archetype. I’d love to see a non-Drowned Men win rate. The issue is everything in that book just pushed it towards that load out. Better units, better artefacts into the best subfaction.” His next event will see the use of a Great Unclean One in more close-range battleplans, one of which will include a “no deep strike” rule.

Patrick: This list is the perfect example of why I love one-day events. The fact that large prizes generally aren’t on the line means that people will be more willing to accommodate casual crowds and test off-meta lists. Jon’s list fits this perfectly.

“The idea…was to make a bad list” Jon told me during a discussion. The Greenville AoS community tends to be newer or more casual players than he normally plays. He didn’t want to create a list that would completely shut other players out. Jon told me “I like the idea of giant lizards stomping around, and this was the only time I would ever actually run them at an event.” Dread Saurians will certainly feel robust in a Thunder Lizard list, but overall they won’t accomplish very much. They’re an ideal unit for new players to feel good dumping wounds into without getting punched back too hard, but players also need to be sure to watch the Skinks, since it would be easy to focus on the big intimidating models while Jon’s battleline consistently scores VP. It’s a lesson in threat assessment and target priority for new players.

While Jon didn’t win the event, he certainly accomplished his goals. Hopefully we see more people approach play with this attitude in event in the future.

Note: Jon did not compete in the final round due to matchups. He was scheduled to face someone he plays multiple times a week, and he decided to give them a chance to play a different opponent (not to mention it is a pain to move three Dread Saurians around).

Talk it Out: New Ogor Mawtribes Battletome

Ok let’s fill our bellies! For this review, I’m talking to a fellow Sigmar’s Pilgrims club member and our resident glutton, Andy – can you kick things off by telling us about your Mawtribes experience up until now? You’ve definitely beaten the average win-rate with them and you’ve been playing them for a fair old while right?

Hello, yes I’ve been playing Ogors as long as I’ve been playing AoS (since 2nd ed.)! I started with a mixed army of mainly dad bods and a big angry cow but that army was really struggling so I made the switch to running a full Beastclaw list. I managed to keep my win rate around 50% but then King Kragnos got his glow up! Since then my win rate is at around 70% and I recently took second at the one-day Sigmar’s Pilgrims event, the Big Bristol Brawl.

So obviously you won’t have got any new games in with the new book yet but from what you’ve seen on paper – what do you think, if any, are gonna be the biggest differences to how the army plays – or CAN play?
The thing on everyone’s lips of course is the Ironblasters… 2 shots at 30” for d3+3 damage – rend 2 nat or 3 with the subfaction has definitely got some portions of the community in a hot sweat

No, yet to play the new book, trying it out next week against the new slaves which should be very fun!

Honestly I don’t think a lot has changed in how the army plays… it’s still a very similar army and fans of ogors will still love this book. For me the army still wants to be charging as they get access to so many MW’s and buffs on the charge and just as before they have access to lots of high damage attacks!

A big change I’m very happy to see is the addition of rend to the gluttons (-1) and ironguts (-2)! I think this, along with the buffs to cannons that you mentioned, as well as to leadbelchers (in the Underguts subfaction) has really helped internally balance the book and I think will lead to a lot more dad bods (carrying cannons) hitting our tabletops!

Nice, that’s good to hear – and GW have been transparent (as of yesterday’s Metawatch) about their internal balance process, so it’s good to see it’s paying off atm. I know you’re a mammoth fan – let’s double down a bit on the kind of charges we can expect now. Stonehorns and Frosties have been been tweaked, there are new monstrous actions – the one I think is especially strong is ‘Unstoppable Charge’ for allowing a 3D6 ‘flying’ move from there, dealing mortals to stuff they pass over. What do you think the best CHARGE! combos are now – between unit/sub-faction/enhancements etc?

Absolutely – the MVP of the last ogor book was without a doubt the Frostlord on Stonehorn (FLoSH) and if anything they have evolved with this battletome! In terms of their warscroll they now have 15 wounds on a 3+ 5+, of that wasn’t enough the new Boulderhead subfaction now gives them an extra 2 wounds. Combine this with the Rockmane Elder mount trait (-1 wound) and you’ve got a big angry cow that’s very, very, tough to kill.

For me 2 FLoSH’s is the way to go but swapping one, or including a Huskguard on Thundertusk (HoTT) as well is a really solid option at only 330 points. In Boulderhead that’s a 16 wound priest on a 4+ save with the ability to add a 5+ ward from a mount trait (another great reason to be in Boulderhead – it lets you take 3 mount traits).

The HoTT also give you access to the other new monstrous action which, although not as good at the new stonehorn one, makes all enemy units within 3” fight last on a 3+ (roll separately for each unit).

3″ fight last – albeit on separate rolls – is not too shabby is it? You can definitely see the synergies opening up around double charging mammoths ploughing through screens and making for some interesting activation sequences.

And you you did a good job there of calling out some mount traits – what do you feel are the biggest winners and losers of the artifacts and command traits? 3e books in general have been solid in general but a few books have had one thing in each category which makes it really hard not to take it in competitive games. To me, they actually seem pretty sweetly balanced for Ogors!

I think, as you said with some other 3e books there are a couple of command trains and artefacts that just won’t see any play my competitive players! However, there are a couple of nice options for each depending on the army you’re running.

For the Gutbusters side of the book the Gastromancer command trait lets a butcher general know the entire Gutmagic lore (Ogors actually have a super spicy spell lore). The other pick for me would be killer reputation on a Tyrant which allows you to pick a second big name and can really help you to make a tanky food general for your army. For the artefacts I love the Flask of Stonehorn Blood which now gives the bearer a 3+ ward for one phase in the game… usually I don’t like one use artefacts but this could really come in clutch!

On the Beastclaw side Touched by the Everwinter is the auto pick command trait for me! Having one FLoSH as a priest (and another with arcane tome) really plugs some huge holes the army had before. For the artefact I love Seat of Alvagr which allows a SH or TT hero to perform 2 monstrous actions. 3d6 move over the screens straight into roaring a key unit – yes please!

Yeah I was surprised just how good the spell lore looked, especially the Butcher lore! Making RHINOX units count as Monsters for the MWs on charges (CV5) and Molten Entrails – for +1 damage to a monster’s mount on a CV6 both seem super strong. 18″ -1 hit on a 6 is also fairly mad good.

And yeah, those enhancements in general all seem pretty darn tasty to me – on paper they seem to allow a huge range of directions to buff things meaningfully in – pretty impressive.
You mentioned Boulderhead earlier – is that going to be your sub-faction of choice? Do you think the others give some different vectors of play – and either way, are there meaningful options for competitive play in there?

Yea it’s always been a good lore but this book has brought lower casting values to some of the spells which really helps… park a butcher next to the mawpot for +1 to cast and it’s actually got some casting power.

I think Boulderhead is the go to when playing multiple stonehorns for sure… an extra 2 wounds on each monster and allowing you to take 3 mount traits is fantastic!

There are definitely other options depending on how you want to play – without a doubt you want to be in Underguts if you are running multiple cannons and units of leadbelchers as the extra -1 rend makes that one of the best builds in the game currently I think. If you want to run Gutbusters without leaning into the shooting, or even a mixed force, then I think Meatfeast is a really fun option, suddenly your units of Ogors are doing MWs on 4+ and then hitting like a truck!

It does seem like a really viable set, which is great – 3e books in general have been pretty good, but there have def been some books with a couple of complete dud subs that only very diehard narrative fans would run!
Penultimate question here – which warscrolls do you think are the biggest winners and losers overall? Let’s forget the Gnoblars as it really seems they need to be FAQd. Anything you were disappointed didn’t get a glow up, or any units you think finally got made competitive?

Yea great question! Without a doubt the cannons got a huge glow up, probably the biggest in the book. So many ogor players already owned at least 1 or 2 Ironblasters and it’s great that they can finally see the tabletop! Is this the start of GW making artillery great? Probably not but it’s fun whilst it lasts haha! Gluttons and Ironguts have both also improved massively – the extra -1 rend to both units and the change to the paired weapons options for gluttons is a glow up I was really hoping for! The whole gutbusters side of the book how has a chance to be competitive!

For me, as a predominantly Beastclaw Raiders player, one of the biggest losers in the book has got to be the Stonehorn beastriders (the Thundertusk variant doesn’t deserve a mention haha)! It’s bonkers that the models still don’t have the elite keyword so they are essentially useless if they go off alone which is exactly what they should do… they took away the crossbow shot (despite the fact the model carries one) and it’s got a 4+ save and hits on 4+ with its best attack… I’ve played a few games now and I’m very unimpressed!

Them not having the elite keyword is definitely very weird. I feel like that might be an FAQ issue – but yeah I hear you on the other things. I guess a lot of ‘current’ Ogors players are basically BCR players so this has probably caused a wave of disappointment. Like you say – foot Ogors with great rend, once per game double-fight on the choppy lads, backed up by genuine shooting gives the book some really well-rounded angles.

Of course, aside from killing stuff you need to be able to score. How do you feel about the matched play rules? I feel like the DoK book started a recent 3e trend for ‘auto-score’ BTs, and ‘Eat Your Fill’ – which is essentially have all your units in combat, and ‘Savour the Taste’ which is the opposite, have nothing in combat – are thematic but kind of ridiculously reliable and un-interactive? ‘Let Them Loose’ – complete 4 Monstrous Rampages – is also going to have a fair few ‘guaranteed opportunities’ if you’re running ‘Horns.

I think BCR were the competitive pick for sure but most ogor players have Gutbusters (even if they were collecting dust) so most are enjoying the chance to get them back out!

Might makes right is the same (better for ogor foot hero’s now who count as 5) so the army is still capable of taking and holding objectives – more so once expert conquers disappears. With rangers to the matched play section of the book it’s truly dreadful from start to finish – not a positive word to say about it I’m afraid!

Can you elaborate? Do you mean in the sense you don’t think they’re easy to score or you’re not happy with the ‘interest value’ of them?

Of course! For the Grand Strategies they are terrible. Ready to plunder is just take what’s theirs reworded, On the Mawpath requires you to complete FOUR book battle tactics in a game, Sage of the Monster Hunter requires your general to kill a monster and enough grub for all needs a full mawpot at the end of the game (it must have been emptied and refilled). As much as auto complete GS such these feel like a combination of impossible and copycats… for me they’re just a waste of ink and paper!

The Battle Tactics are slightly better to be fair… still not great but I think situationally you could see yourself picking something like Avalanche of Flash (cause more than 10 MWs from charging in a turn) if you had all your big boys lined up with kragnos behind. One of the ones that require you to have all or none of your units in combat could also come into play turn 4/5 if fewer units are in the board! Again, overall I think book BTs are meh though!

Interesting! We’ll def be seeing how they shake out in the meta very soon, as they’re a popular army and they’ll be coming out of the woodwork with the new book.

To wrap up – stick a pin in where you think they’ll land competitively. Will the combo of good ranged output and tanky, fast monsters catapult them into A tier – or do you think it’s a big internal balance improvement that will struggle to win events? Who do you think are their red match ups?

I think they will settle nicely in the mid-tier following their FAQ, unless cannons and gnoblars remain untouched then they will probably be higher! I think we will definitely see some good player pilot them to 5-0 with 4-1 being very achievable now.

In terms of red match ups – on the BCR side I think they are still very susceptible to good shooting/magic at range so armies! I envisage the new StD book being a massive red match up for the gutbusters too having played one game against them, good saves and decent rend on certain profiles will make for a really tough game!

Interesting, I def see them as top third, maybe better – I know the results we’ve seen so far are probably somewhat down to the surprise factor – new books with glow ups often have that kind of spike, and Gnoblars MW output is surely broken and not long for this world. But they just have all the tools- strong long range firepower that’s hard to charge (because of the 10 shots with unleash hell), fast, durable monsters with shenanigans and slower, super heavy hitting foot troops. I feel with the 5+ wards the ‘Horns have, magic isn’t too oppressive for them, but I do see them potentially struggling against large tanky infantry units.

This is the Top Three AoS Lists for the Lost Legion GT that took place in Australia on 19th and 20th November. It involved 32 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5 game tournament.

Declan: I don’t know if the tournament allowed the new book, but Patrick is well prepared for it if they didn’t. 4 Ironblasters never really appeared in the UK meta, but was reasonably common in the US and has appeared in Australia. It’s a great example of how the tournament scenes are different in each country.

Why is everyone talking about Ironblasters….? Well more consistent damage is coming and the Hailshot is getting very good! Expect to see similar lists to this once the book is fully allowed at tournaments.

Randal: There are two primary archetypes of Kharadron Overlords that have been successful this season. There is the Full Fleet list with four or more boats, and the Double Ironclad with an Anvil lists which have also seen a lot of success like this wonderful list from Luca Foerster.

Luca took this list in a slightly different direction from the typical double ironclad lists we have seen in the past, by foregoing the Krondspine or Gotrek anvil choices and instead taking a reinforced unit of Grundstok Thunderers with Special Weapons. This is extra spicy since it gives the unit an enormous amount of firepower but has limited range with most of the weapons limited to 12” or less. This list gets around that restriction by being in Zilfin which gets a hero phase move for one of the Ironclads allowing the Thunderers to jump out and pummel the enemy’s frontline. The usual suspects for heroes and battleline accompany the two heavy boats, but there is a surprise Grundstok Gunhauler which provides a little extra extra for the two big boats in the form of a 6+ ward if it is nearby.

Another surprise here is that Luca has foregone using Spell in a Bottle which is a mainstay for Kharadron Alpha-Strike lists. This is likely a concession to stay in Zilfin and still get a Navigator instead of the common double Khemist builds that we usually see.

There is not much out that wants to play against this, but the lack of mortal wounds output or Purple Sun means that after the Flarepistol and Admiral’s Special Ammunition are used there isn’t much punch left to deal with a good save army that managed to survive the opening
barrage.

Brett: Joel is a member of Measured Gaming (as is Pat who took first) who loves Liberators and Stormstrike Chariots (he has a battle report on youtube with 5 in a single game – against Pat). Very experienced SCE general who has been developing this list since Karazai came out. This army is about Karazai and trying to get him into battle while within range of the Praetors or Gardus (bodyguard and ward don’t stack). The Praetors, as Bounty Hunters, they are capable damage dealers, just a bit slow, with 19 attacks at Rend -1 and 2(3) Damage. The army has a few more surprises, Fulminators are efficient even in pairs and with a 5+ ward if near Gardus, hard to shift. Bounty Hunters can really help them if they are caught in combat, against GV anyway.

Vanquishers are good anti horde (3 attacks against 5 models and 4 attacks against 10 or more) all with Rend -1. The Castellan isn’t the general but still included for utility with his Lantern ability (improved saves or mortal wounds). Teamed with the Vanquishers he can make them as robust Vindicators (3+ save) while they have a much better damage profile. Hallowed Knights grants fight on death to the Liberators and Vanquishers (Redeemers). The same units benefit the most from the army being Watchful Guardians (Stormkeep). They get the benefit of Eternal Conquerors without the battalion (except they only count as 3 models on home objectives before round 3) and when successfully charged while on an objective they do mortal wounds to the attacker.

With the Relictor’s translocate and Liberators counting as 3 models you can sometimes steal an objective in Turn 4 with a unit that is hard to shift and has really strong objective control. The army has a really balanced approach with a solid mix of resilience and damage ultimately finishing only 4 points behind Luca (2nd) who he beat in the 1st round. Ultimately he lost to Pat with the revitalised Ogors and their amazing Ironblasters.

Danny: This list harks back to a brief period around the turn of editions where zombie spam + Big Drogg was a tournament winning Soulblight list. William has ditched the zombies like everyone else while Bounty Hunters is a thing (and here’s to it dying off soon) but kept Big Drogg – and why not? The guy is a source of rend 2 that Soulblight traditionally lack, and, well, he’s a gargant. They’re fast, soak up serious punishment and dish it out in turn – leaing your msu Deathrattle, speedy wolves and Fell Bats (LOVE seeing them) and the tankier 2 units of Blood Knights to head out and score.

It’s an interesting HQ selection too – Belladamma is a great buff piece but not usually taken these days, however for 200 pts she’s relatively cheap, speedy, and can cast a spell on a 6 for a 12″ aura of exploding 6s – which can help Blood Knights hit much more reliably. With her built in +1, she’s also a good Jaws caddy and being able to use the wolves as bodyguards ups her survivabillity.

Topping things off you have the always-reliable Lord on Zombie Dragon, who in Legion of Blood gains a built in horrorghast effect, and gains +1 attack on his Deathlance with Martial Expertise, while Soulbound Garments for +1 save gets him on a 2+ as standard before anything like AoD, Finest Hour – etc – making him SUPER tanky.

The one thing this list doesn’t have is access to good MWs outside of jaws, which may explain the loss to Stormcast – presumably they were able to tank the VLoZD, out-compete William on objectives and strike down Big Drogg with the usual SCE hammers. Still, a great result for an unusual list – I’m loving seeing the variation and the resurgence of top 5 SBGL lists these days after a slow start to the season!

Danny:It’s that man Grigar! Can he be stopped? Evidently not. Playing with ‘old’ points, he’s taken the HQ combo. Interestingly (a relative term when writing about Thunder Lizsts) he’s *tripled* down on Thunder Lizardy goodness with one laser Basti and two meat-shield variants. For 165, their tankiness and base size makes them excellent move blockers and objective grabbers – if they push out a few wounds and a road/stomp into the bargain, so much the better. Amusingly, they’ll only get better once Expert Conqs. dies off.

Lots of skinks make up the battleline, for obvious reasons that we’ve often covered.

So what did he beat and how? (Indulge my guesses) KO would have been dealt with by parking bastis on objectives, whose 1+ saves are generally good at coping with massed rend 1 firepower with little in the way of MWs. DoK I imagine would have straight up melted to Solar Engine firepower, Kroak’s MW output and Horrorghast – that’s a lot of attrition for their fragile frames to deal with even with a 4+ rally.
Fyreslayers may have presented a challenge with their ward saves, possible spell ignores and bodies-on-objectives plan – but skinks in Expert Conqs combined with a well-screened Kroak – and ‘Slayer’s lack of ranged threat – clearly put paid to their angry waddling. Hedonites, bless ’em – if they brought any daemons, the Solar Engine would have been damage three against their heaviest hitters. Lumineth would have depended on the list, but if anything can stand up to their magic it’s Kroak, and without their magic-synergy, the old-book often folds.

GG to GG once again. Now do us a favour and go 5-0 with like, an all-Terradon list!

Ethan: Howdy, Ethan here for the Sylvaneth bit and wow is this Matt Robisch list a departure from the regular Sylvaneth structure we’ve seen in the 4-1+ crowd thus far. Heartwood is a relatively standard pick but the Season selection of the Burgeoning is the beginning of a picture showing a more durable, less mobile and less spell dependent Sylvaneth army. This is a list that requires enormous skill to play as it is elite, relatively fragile despite the defensive season and lacks many of the tools such as the Spiteswarm hive and a battlemage which allow for the single-unit Strike and Fade strategy regularly seen which plays like a scalpel, removing a unit a turn as magic support pushes for board control.

Warsinger and the Seed of Rebirth ensure that the Archrevenant has defensive tools to help it survive incidental MWs and shooting while Warsinger makes the large blocks of Kurnoth hunters sufficiently mobile at the same time as sending the gossamids and revenant seekers into overdrive. 6 bows create a sufficient shooting threat to force opponents to approach the sylvaneth force while Gossamid archers support this to threaten 5-wound heroes and to add tech to slow the advance of a variety of shooting lite armies. Looking at Matt’s MUs, he has admittedly had a relatively lucky run, coming up against 5 armies with little to no shooting with which to remove his gossamid archers. This allows for a greater deal of board control than you would expect into armies with the tools to remove them outside of their unleash and retreat charge phase mechanic.

Outside of this, the list is very much what you see on the tin, Drycha is an excellent damage threat in midrange with her shooting profile further disincentivising charges as 30 shots doing MWs on 6s is nothing to sniff at (average of 5 MWs for the mathematician savants in the audience). The Kurnoth hunters with scythes are supported by the Revenant seekers, bringing 1 back a turn and serving as an anvil with 30 wounds on a 3+ base, supplemented by a 6+ ward (and often a mystic shield, I’d hope). This list holds space well compared to most Sylvaneth lists and functions in the absence of spellcasters, demonstrating a different aspect of the Sylvaneth than we’ve seen thus far and perhaps heralding somewhat the direction many will take their Sylvaneth lists as the book starts to mature and players become more willing to experiment.

Peter: I reached out to Tom who kindly agreed to give us a quick run down on the way his list works.

Tom Guan: The list does a lot of mortal wounds and good target selection between the dragon and hurricanum shooting, all the casting, and impact hit from the gargant. Let’s it deal with armor fairly well, with conquerer on the flagellants, it can steal objectives pretty well also. I felt like the list had a lot of different play available to it against everything and would play something similar in the future.

Declan: When Peter asked me to comment on an Ogor list for the top 3 series I was happy to oblige… but a little ‘Gut’-ted that they were outside the top 3 – however a 4-1 result is still special with Ogors, so congrats to Bryan on this one.

The US scene has already been a bit strange for Ogors with Ironblasters and Leadbelchers being a lot more common there than on this side of the pond. The approach here is to shoot the world, and then charge and do mortal wounds. However the real tech is in the spell:

A low casting value and a bubble make this a great spell when you remember that the Ironblasters have the Rhinox keyword – so they all benefit.

And what a benefit. Mortal wounds on a 4+ instead of a 6+ and this is based on the actual charge distance rolled, not what was moved. You also get to shoot with the Ironblasters first. I’ve never known why it hasn’t caught on elsewhere but it is an interesting list that will likely only get better in the new book, where the Ironblaster looks like a beast of a warscroll.
