Kevin Lathers: This an interesting list in that it makes use of a lot of different Fyreslayer units all together. Functionally it may perform similar to some Vostarg Vulkite-heavy lists but allows for a couple different board control strategies.

To that end, this list will be effecting heavy board control. Vulkites and Hearthguard Berserkers have a lot of wounds on them to burn through, and Shield Vulkites are 40 wounds under a 6+/5+ (with battlesmith) ward that can be rallied on a 4+ and feed the flamekeepers when they die. There’s just a lot of stuff for enemies to have to deal with this.

Furthering this board control is the ability for the Hearthguard Berserker group to split off with the Runefather — with possibly the Doomseeker and Flameseekers (for an extra hero and anti-monstrous actions) — to create one small castle while the Vulkites, Battlesmith, and Flamekeepers create another small castle. This list can split push if need be. That’s very dangerous because opponents can often break one castle, but two? That’s another thing entirely.

On top of this, dealing with these castles, and their high model count, not only causes other stuff to get stronger (via flamekeeper), but leaves opponents open to heavy mortal wound output from the infernoth, flamespitter, and the poleaxe berserkers. It’s notable that flameseekers benefit as well from flamekeepers as Vulkites do, as well.

As a treat, the Auric Hearthguard add a nice little bit of shooting as well as movement reduction on select units which is always good and can even be backbreaking occasionally. Dropping a units move by 2″ can sometimes be a difference maker in an opponent’s plans.

Functionally this list becomes a buzzsaw that can push onto objectives, be hard to remove, and punish opponents for even trying to do it.

What a breath of fresh air this list is! The vast majority of Slaves to Darkness lists you see in articles like this one lean into cavalry, largely because of the army’s relative lack of movement shenanigans and its generally aggressive style. Stefan’s list, however, turns all of that conventional wisdom on its ear by leaning into a defensive control style instead. His list is looking to take and hold objectives, while prevailing in key combats.

We have some common staples in Be’lakor, the Sorcerer Lord, and Slaanesh Chosen, but what makes the list special is that it features some impressive bulk in the form of 40(!) Nurgle Chaos Warriors in 2 units of 20. One of those two units features The Eroding Icon for even more durability. While slow, these two units make for incredible anvils and objective holders, and most units in the game will struggle to shift them. In an effort to compensate for their lack of foot speed, Stefan has chosen to include the Soulscream Bridge. While the Bridge has a significant downside in that it does not allow you to issue commands to the unit until your next Hero phase, that downside is mitigated when you are using the Bridge to move a unit onto an objective as opposed to trying to set up a charge.

The list is rounded out by a Chaos Lord general with the Arcane Tome (for a strong bid at Spellcasting Savant) and 2 of the less-common cultist units in the Cypher Lords and Scions of the Flame. While you don’t see these in as many lists, they bring some interesting capabilities to the table and help this list feature a strong triumph bid. All in all, I am thrilled to see this sort of list do well, as it is a very different approach to Slaves to Darkness than what is normally seen.

TOTAL POINTS: (1970/2000)

In stark contrast to Stefan’s Warrior-centric Slaves to Darkness list, Rainer took 2nd place with a list straight out of central casting: Varanguard, more Varanguard, Be’lakor, and some support units to fill. However, there is a bit of personal flair to this list, as we will discuss below.

An interesting choice here was to Mark the 5-man Knight unit Nurgle and give it The Eroding Icon. While the Icon is undisputably one of the strongest Ensorcelled Banners in the Slaves to Darkness roster, it is typically seen on reinforced units in order to maximize its effect. However, this list instead chose to go hard on offense, and therefore did not have the points to spare for a reinforced unit. In that context, a 5-man unit of Knights makes for a good budget pinner that will deal some damage on the way and require a disproportionate amount of effort to remove.

Another not-often-seen choice here is the unit of Furies. I think this is excellent tech, as Furies are a fast objective grabber/screen that can force an opponent to activate in a sequence they may not prefer. Last but not least, the choice to run an Exalted Hero with the Arcane Tome over a 2nd Chaos Sorcerer in order to push for a triumph bid is an interesting one, as Bloodthirsty can obviously be game-swinging in an army this dependent on making its charges. These personal touches, combined with the raw power of the Be’lakor + Varanguard shell, made for a winning combination.

TOTAL POINTS: (2000/2000)

Hey everyone, back at it with another shiny elf list review. This time around, we’re centred around the Zaitrec subfaction. The inclusion of Scinari Calligrave and Scinari Cathallar adds both offensive and supportive spellcasting capabilities to the force. With the Merciless Blizzard and Speed of Hysh spells at their disposal, they can control engagements and enhance the overall mobility of the army. Furthermore, the Calligraves’ ability to OPG makes an area of the field a haven for your casters, and troops alike can’t be understated.

Big Teclis at the center is always a respectable choice, though given his substantial point cost you do start running low on bodies. That being said though, Teclis brings unparalleled countermagic prowess, and his ability to securely score Magical Dominance all by his lonesome means he enables multiple battle tactics with his inclusion. The Light of Eltharion aka The Butcher of Tor Yvresse adds another layer of versatility, giving a consistent source of rend 3 to ensure the list can handle various threats effectively. Worth noting, Eltharion also gets around the new and improved Look Out Sir due to his shooting ability not being a missile weapon. Snipe those heroes!

At battleline we have two sets of Wardens and a big brick of Bladelords providing the foundation, with the Wardens bringing a copy of Overwhelming Heat and a redundant Speed of Hysh it’s likely that you’ll always be able to utilize the mobility the latter provides. Bladelords usually operate as a bodyguard in their five man units but as a 10 man brick their a solid choice for a hammer. With both perfect strike or the horde clearing mode offering a consistent amount of damage regardless of what the situation calls for. A great tech piece is the Hurakan Windchargers as they adds mobility and a fast-attack element to the army, and if truth be told it’s the reach piece that I’d be playing if I were looking for one. The Umbral Spellportal and Aethervoid Pendulum as Endless Spells provide additional strategic options, enhancing the list’s overall flexibility and damage output through the hero phase.

Taking the Andtorian Acolytes and Battle Regiment as their Battalions means that you are a nice and tidy 3 drops coming in at 2000 points on the nose. Well done and good showing.

Carson Whitlock: Hey… I recognize this list!

This is the usual Ogors combined arms we see doing fairly well into every matchup. It’s got tools for pretty much every situation and, in general, has a large spread of medium hammers to account for the relatively low save profiles on foot ogors. The focus here is being able to project threats in every phase (Ironblaster MVP) and at any point in the game. Against certain armies, we see the firebelly doing heavy lifting with that -1 to hit bubble, and the gnoblars make for an excellent “movement shenanigan punishment” screen. As always, the stonehorn will be an excellent fast anvil AND hammer, perfect for pinning your opponent in place while the foot ogors march up the field.

It’s no surprise that this list was able to pass the DPS check of gargants and chew through all of the bodies that Death armies tend to present. Slaves to Darkness poses a unique challenge of having both good saves and near army wide ward against mortals wounds, which really affects the Ogor player’s ability to clear units with charge mortals.

Roland Rivera: It’s always a pleasure to see Meatfist Ogors at the top tables, especially when it’s bringing something new and interesting. This list certainly fits that bill, as it has invested heavily in the new Gorger Mawpacks. These units are roughly comparable to Ogor Gluttons based on the raw warscroll, but they bring some interesting potential utility in that they can shut off commands for units near them, and also threaten to deepstrike into enemy territory. This adds some nice tactical depth to the typical Always-Be-Charging Meatfist lists.

The Mawpacks are complemented by some interesting units. You don’t see Leadbelchers often these days, but they profile well in Meatfist where they have a bit of extra punch on the charge and let Reuben save points for his Mawpacks. Hrothgorn Mantrapper is a similarly uncommon inclusion, which I presume is there for further commitment to the deepstrike threat strategy. Between the 3 Mawpacks and Hrothgorn, I can imagine it would be quite difficult to properly zone this list out on all possible fronts.

Speaking of screens, that’s definitely what the Gnoblars do for this list, which is important because there are quite a few Heroes here that could benefit from being covered for a turn or two, including the Tyrants that are set up for big charges and the casters who purport to buff the team. All in all, this seems like a fun list, and I’ll be interested to see if Mawpacks continue to make a splash going forward.

Wow. Now this is how you go off-meta. There are some stalwarts of the Meatfirst meta present – the Firebelly is pretty much an auto-take these days due to his -1 to hit bubble spell, as is the Slaughtermaster for his potential to hand out +1 to wound to a unit and take blizzard. Tyrants are fairly common too, due to their ability to get to 3s on their MW rolls based on charge dice. There’s also a unit of Gnoblars, who’re still one of the best screens going due to their non-trivial and passive MW output.

From there, it’s all bets are off. Reuben has gone for the cheapest possible battleline fillers of 3x 4 Leadbelchers – who, it should still be noted – are capable of putting out a good amount of ranged chip and screen clearing damage, especially if they don’t move. The points savings have gone entirely on THREE units of Gorger Mawpacks. The new unit on the block, Mawpacks, looks fairly underwhelming and overcosted on paper to me – but there’s always value to a deepstriking unit. Additionally, their warscroll ability to shut down command abilities on a 5+ is per unit, meaning if they were all in range of something, that’s 3 attempts. It’s good utility that becomes a heck of a lot more reliable in a group – and they’re still a wound dense unit with plenty of rend 1, damage 2 attacks after their charge mortals.

Hrothgorn sneaks into the list too as, I imagine, a deepstriking ‘Surround and Destroy’ scorer, rounding out a HIGHLY sneaky and bizarre list that managed to beat two Khorne lists, meaning it’s surely no joke. A huge congrats to Reuben for a 5-0 with a list. I would have called a meme if I hadn’t seen the results!!

Lodivicus: Does the current Jaws of Mork core trend continue? Yes, but with some twists! Almost all of the currently trending core units are here (Skragrott, a Squigboss, Sneaky Snufflers, Squig Herd, Boingrot Bounderz, and the Bad Moon Loonshrine). The list drops the more common Madcap Shaman (with Moonface Mommet and Hoarfrost) and replaces it with the more expensive, but typically more survivable Fungoid Cave Shaman (with a Staff of Sneaky Stealing and Hoarfrost). It also drops the Gobbapalooza entirely from the more ‘meta’ build.

So what are the other twists?

First off, the big one, the Mangler Squigs. While still pretty uncommon, we’re starting to see these appear occasionally. Their ability to jump over front lines (with their Giant Boing! monstrous rampage) and get at key pieces of the opposing army is quite valuable (especially in a GHB season of little wizards). As a behemoth, it is also instrumental in making the list fit into a single battle regiment battalion. While quite effective in the role, Mangler Squigs are fairly expensive points wise. I suspect it would take a small points reduction for this to become a more common choice.

Second, the Boingrot Bounderz are being run as two single reinforced units as opposed to one double reinforced and one (or more) regular units. While likely being a playstyle change as much as anything, it’s noteworthy composition wrinkle as it also contributes to allowing him to play as the 1 drop list.

Third, the inclusion of Stabbas. With so many points tied into his meatball monster, I suspect Brandon includes the Stabbas primarily as objective holders, but could also be used to screen if the matchup dictates it. The -1 hit from Netters can also be hugely valuable in the right circumstances.

Lastly, the most uncommon inclusion in the list is the triumph choice of Bloodthirsty. Indomitable is almost universally the triumph choice in a Gloomspite Gitz list, but playing only 10 points below the limit, I doubt this had much impact.

Congratulations to Brandon on his 3rd place finish, with Big Waaagh being his only loss of the event.

Roland Rivera: It’s been a while since we saw a mostly Gutbuster-centric Ogor list like this one do well (let alone take 1st), which I think speaks well of the state of the current metagame.  Good and honest Warhammer is on the comeback!

As implied above, this list is very straightforward.  You have lots of blocks of hard-hitting units, and your goal is to crash them into your opponent and mess them up.  Gluttons are your high-volume attackers, Ironguts are your higher-Rend can openers (with the option for a double fight if you get them into the right target), and the Frostlord on Stonehorn is the durable anchor in the middle that can also sneak behind enemy lines with its Monstrous Rampage.  Between the mortal wounds on the charge (with every unit in this list averaging 3.5 or so) and their combat profiles, they will put a hole in whatever is unfortunate enough to be charged by them.  It is imperative that you are the aggressor, however, as the only unit that can take a punch in this whole list is the Frostlord.

These melee beaters are supported by a couple of casters (including the Frostlord, which has the Arcane Tome), which can spit out buffs or debuffs as needed, and an Ironblaster, which can be used to clear out screens or as a supplementary combatant if it gets the Blubbergrub Stench spell cast on it.  A unit of Gnoblars rounds things out as a screen/objective grabber.  It will typically be guarding the Ironblaster as it advances into range for its Hail Shot (by far its most effective mode of shooting), but it can also guard one of the Ogor units in a pinch.

Overall, I am thrilled to see that this sort of list is still good enough to take down tournaments, and recommend taking it out for a spin, as it’s a ton of fun.

The brand new Ard Boyz pack quite a punch and stick around while they do it to build Waaagh points and then utilize them efficiently as well.

Gobbsprakk, combined with andtorian acolytes battallion and Big Waaaghs bonus to cast and dispel creates an incredibly dominant magic force.

Breaka boss, brutes, pigs, this list has hammer after hammer after hammer

I love this list. It seems fun, rock solid, and fun

Joshua Bennett: Hello readers welcome back to another top showing of our favorite murder ladies.  Today we are looking at Dale Johnson’s list and we love to see the non-Morathi witch elves spam.

This list consists of two of their most reliable casters in the acolytes battalion which allows them the chance of getting the ever needed primal dice. This helps them get blizzard and mindrazor off to make the the witch elves even more deadly.

Two of the smaller units of witches are armed with the bucklers to make them better for screening.  They will stick around a little longer while you prepare the 20 block to take on whatever is in your way.  Teamed up with the Gladiatrix and the Hagg Nar temple, your witches can hit and wound on two’s with Mindrazor, can be rend two, and damage two.  At three attacks each you’re looking at a lot of damage into anything.

The avatars are going to run around the board doing some really cool monsters action.  These guys are also totems, issuing commands 18 inches out.  While they deal a lot of damage they also have a decent save with a high wound count that allows them to stick around a while.

The last thing that makes this list a problem for most lists in a GT setting, is that it scores five battle tactics and a grand strategy consistently that are almost impossible to stop.  Meaning that you have to score everything and also get the objectives or you will find yourself falling behind very quickly.  It’s great to see DOK in a good standing again.  maybe this is a foreshadowing of what is to come in the future?

Beasts of Chaos have settled into a pretty nice groove overall these days – thankfully far from the janky, meta-terrors they used to be – but still perfectly capable of competing.

The core around which most of their strongest lists are built is a brick of Bullgors – unsurprising for anyone who’s played/against them – because of their charge mortals and mad damage spike potential. In a big brick, they’re a super dense wound total too, meaning they’re difficult to commit to and offer lots of rallying potential.

Supporting them are a mixture of Ungors and Raiders for sneaky ranged chip damage and sniping potential and the usual core heroes.

But then Be’Lakor enters chat – ready to shut down the biggest threat to the Bullgors and allowing way more insurance across the double (or in the event of a failed charge), helping the stampeding hammer to survive and carry on their rampage.

Also noteworthy is the chaos gargant, who’s a cheap, fast monster who once engaged can help the Ungor hit above their weight due to the Garg’s -1 to save aura. Losing only to Meatfist, who for sure have the distributed hammers to deal with the Bullgors, this Darkwalkers list successfully dealt with some nasty threats, especially Khorne, for a well deserved 4-1.

Well. Well well well. What have we got here? It looks like a well balance, non-skewy Meatfist list without Kragnos! And it’s only gone and gone 5-0!

So let’s try and break down how. The first obvious synergy is the two Brawlerguts Tyrants in Meatfists – what this means in practice is they’re doing charge mortals equal to on 3+s on dice equal to their charge roll. So that’s already a spicy little duo of pot-bellied rockets. The Firebelly is enjoying a bit of a resurgence in this season, mainly because of his Billowing Ash spell, which is a 12″ aura of -1 to hit, which is obviously fantastic and can now more reliably forced through with primals. You’ve also got the typical FloSH because it just represents too much utility and threat projection to leave home without.

Making up the ‘meat’ of the list are 2 units of gluttons and some Ironguts, who all received points drops recently making them much more viable. And with the +1 to charge mortal rolls from their sub-faction, are all looking for 4+ (while they’re over 2 models). The foot lads can be surprisingly slappy, and the Ironguts mean a once per game double-fight activation where necessary to tip the scales.

Rounding out the list and fitting nicely into a 2-drop, are two little bits of fun tech. Gnoblars are perennially fantastic screens who can punish people for getting close with yet more sneaky mortals, and the lone Gorger is an off-board piece for helping score Surround/Destroy or threatening a back objective. They also have the additional tech for turning off battleshock immunity and rally if they’re engaged, which in concert with another charge can potentially be devastating.

All told, the list clearly just works. It’s big, it’s slightly clever, and it’s frankly very honest. Love to see it going 5-0.

OTHER
1 x Warp-Grinder (60)**

CORE BATTALIONS:
*Andtorian Acolytes
**Warlord

TOTAL POINTS: (1990/2000)

Keegan Graves: Essentially the list is built around superior combat tricks, counter charging, and threat saturation. I have 5 units that do good damage in melee, and 3 that do ranged mortal wounds from spells and prayers. Then the list is designed around enabling those damage sources.

Three clawsteps ahead is the strongest ability in the skaven battletome, by far. It gives the list so much consistency in movement, and so much flexibility in the combat phase.
The extra pile ins, combined with 3” melee on the verminlords, fight on death, and the consistent charges, allows me to pick good activations to get the best value out of my melee troops, as well as extending my melee threat ranges significantly. This also combos well with the warp grinder, who usually deep-strikes a unit of censers to the battlefield, ready to fish for a 9” charge. With 3 clawsteps I essentially get 3 tries for the 9”, 1 with a prior unit, and the censers themselves with a reroll.

The plague priests and wizards give my army essentially a 13” kill box. Skreechs warscroll spell and the great plagues especially can gun down something with an average of 15 mortal wounds when I focus the two. It helps with dissuading people from charging my lines, as well as clearing space for my units to charge.

The list, simply put, just pumps out damage, everything in the army hits like a ton of bricks, from the verminlords to the hellpit to the censer bearers. The list can snowball very fast and is designed to secure games in the first 2-3 turns, to make up for skaven struggling on the tactic side.

Roland Rivera: Another week, another Glottkin list with a podium result – seems like that points cut is making quite the impact. The metagame shifting to be more melee-centric doesn’t hurt, either. This list is an interesting spin on using the Glottkin, however, as Drowned Men is usually not the subfaction chosen for that sort of list, as going heavy on Pusgoyle Blightlords typically burns through your points allotment in a hurry. However, with a bit of compromising on his Fly count, Raymond has made it work.

This list has paired The Glottkin with some interesting dance partners, as it features both a reinforced unit of Plaguebearers (useful for pinning opponents in place with big blobs of bodies) and Rotmire Creed (useful for peppering the opponent with shooting). It also features a Lord of Afflictions with Overpowering Stench as a way to shut off commands.

In summary, this list seems to be the result of mashing the two best-performing styles of Nurgle together to see what happens, but the end result seems to be strong enough to perform well.

Craig Ellis: In terms of support there are 2 GoS with their excellent +1 to wound aura, healing spell & one with Merciless Blizzard (extra primals needed from the acolytes battalion) & Shademist (-1 to be wounded on a unit) on the other making a unit extra hard to kill. This durability is helped with the Krulghast -1 to damage in melee aura. The Generals command trait extends the Aura of Dread trait to 6” away, meaning he’s extending the range of denying Inspiring Prescence, helping with battle tactics and also adding a bit more damage (Lady O’s lifting the veil ability adds +1MW if the enemy is terrified!) Lady O herself provides that once-per-battle bringing back models to every unit in the army to keep stuff around a bit longer, and a 5+ Command Ability deny from 12” away to help deny crucial Redeploys or AoD’s. Her Lifting the Veil is great for sniping foot heroes (don’t roll a 1!). The spirit drain spell she’s been given adds to the anti-horde theme. All of this helps charge up the Black Coach, as the dice ticks up every time a model dies within 12”, meaning he’s going to be getting multiple attempts in the game to unleash the 3d3 MW rocket from the Coach, with its Evocation of Death ability. The Suffocating Gravetide is the cherry on top for those hordes, providing a serious threat to large model count units, as well as being a giant base for controlling enemy movement.
The main weakness is staying in power. If he gets drawn into any attritional lengthy combats, he’s going to lose. Anything getting a successful alpha into this is going to put some serious hurt in, too. Careful deployment is required as there aren’t too many screens unless you count the banshees. It’s will require careful positioning to strike at the right time without being left open to the double turn.

It’s aggressive, has high output, scores well, and doesn’t care about the Nighthaunts main weakness, being its susceptibility to the hit back. Very nice.
