Roland Rivera: Despite this tournament being in a 2-list format, our winner seems to has thumbed his nose at that notion, as both of his lists are exactly the same! He has gone for the Hero-heavy Khorne approach which seems to be gaining momentum of late, as he has maxed out his Hero selections.

The list is anchored by Skarbrand and the Bloodthirster of Unfettered Fury, which are a vital source of mobility in the form of 3D6″ charges (Skarbrand for himself, the Unfettered Fury Thirster for anyone) and doing most of the damage. The list also packs several Priests (including the Unfettered Fury Thirster itself) to help power out whatever Prayer or Invocation is the most useful at the moment (and this list has a pretty deep selection). An interesting addition is Theddra Skull-Scryer as an Ally (likely for Andtorian Locus-centered Battle Tactics). Skarr Bloodwrath rounds out the Hero lineup as a cheap, recurring space blocker that can also double as a source of Blood Tithe.

These Heroes have some troop support in the form of a blob of Bloodletters and Magore’s Fiends, but they will mostly be asked to do the heavy lifting in combat, on both offense and defense. Overall, this style of Khorne list seems to be gaining momentum this season, so don’t be surprised if you see similar lists going forward.

Danny: A big win for Sylvaneth at a time they’ve still got something to prove on the competitive circuit! Some patterns are beginning to emerge for the evil trees – Warsong Revenant is rooted in place, and Skaeth’s Wild Hunt (a good value and mobile wizard+retinue with a tasty +1 to wound spell) have come out of retirement – if you can find them!

Zach here however eschews evilest single tree Durthu for 2x 6 Spiteriders, again slightly unusual given the tanky and self-healing Revenants were seeking the position of ‘meta bug cavalry’. It makes sense though – Spiterider Lancer’s 14″ movement and fight first on the charge allows for a devastating weight of rend 2 attacks. In Harvestboon they gain a 12″ pre-game move too, which is huge for establishing board control or setting up the alpha.

With the usual brace of Tree revs for teleport based scoring and the unfortunately ubiquitous Spinedog to pin stuff in place while the Warsong bombs you with MWs, this is a potent list that took down some very challenging armies en route to first. I think even with the Spinedog nerfed into oblivion (or, at least, a shallow hole) it’s still a capable core – kudos to Zach for leafing with gold!

Danny: Legion are enjoying a bit of a twilight resurgence since their nerf – although ‘rumour’ (i.e. leaks) have it that their current format will drastically change in the new year.

In the meantime, this is a still-excellent version of the army that employs the favoured combo of Kairos (for spellz!) a Bloodthirster (for many MWs in an 8″ aura on 6s!) and a Daemon Prince – who until the new Slaves book is still rocking Blood Slick Ground for that really quite sweet halves-charges aura. Flesh hounds provide great value screening and utility – their free unbind/dispel attempt is an added bonus – aaaaaaaaand of course there’s a Krondspine for even more of that sweet, sweet control.

You may also notice there’s no Be’lakor in this list – I guess he’s learned to delegate? Taking down DoT, Nurgle, NH and the board control of SBGL is no mean feat so big up to Matt for this swan song – this list is not long for this world.

Danny: These successful Sylvaneth lists are sprouting up everywhere eh? And this one brings big ol’ thunder thighs herself! She’s backed up by the obviously strong combo of 2×3 Kurnoth bows backed up by Arch-Rev for +1 to wound even to their shooting – and in Heartwood they’ll also be naturally at +1 to hit three chosen targets meaning you don’t lose out by splitting the squads as AoA isn’t necessary. A big blob of Scythes absolutely blend and survive most attacks before getting a model or two back from Rally or the Verdurous Harmony spell.

That’s it really – a hugely tough and killy Kurnoth core escorting Alarielle for all sorts of spell casting and utility, screening and turning terrain into Overgrown for teleporting shenanigans. I’m happy to see a list with her in do well as, personally I think they did her scroll dirty but she deserves to be seen on top tables.

Danny: Those plucky Kruleboyz! Sitting pretty in the bottom 3 of win-rates, going 4-1 – meaning it was actually in a tournament winning position – and losing only to Sylvaneth who an army like this just can’t really interact with at all is really impressive and cool to see.

James here opts not to use the recently buffed Grinnin’ Blades to go all in (ish) on Boltboyz in Big Yellerz – bringing a big blob of 9 which really should punch through an awful lot of targets in the game. They’re commanded by no less than Gobsprakk himself – an ever-controversial pick who can nevertheless play mind games with enemy casters and generally fly around issuing double-commands to stuff and casting from the actually great Kboyz lore.

Wonderfully, he’s joined by the humble Killaboss on FOOT (not to mention his trust stab-grot, the real MVP of any list) – presumably a budget way to access All Part of Da Plan – to essentially make the 2x 20 blobs of Gutrippaz immune to battleshock. The shaman and Sludgeraker round off the ‘fishing for 5s/6s’ synergy package, with the latter rocking Egomaniak (essentially turning the hobgrotz into ablative bodyguard wards) making it super durable, with Arcane Tome and Sneaky Miasma for casting a hero-phase move on himself.

It’s a lovely list that can put out an eye-watering number of MWs up close and actually packs some real board control chops. It’s got overlapping synergies and plenty of movement options, and about as much durability as Kboyz can manage. Real big up to James for coming so close – can’t wait to see what he does with the faction after the Battlescroll!

P.s. according to the new Woehammer scoring metrics that take army win-rate into account, this was the winning list of the event!

This Weeks Stats

The following stats are for the week ending 28th August only, essentially GT’s that took place on the 27th and 28th August.

Rolling 4 Week Stats

The rolling stats includes all GT’s since the weekend of 30th/31st July to the 20th/21st August. This covers a total of 983 players (+152 players) across 24 Grand Tournaments (+3 GT).

As the new release of the GHB takes hold it looks as though the overall effect is a positive one, although the stats are starting to shift away from the 50% mark slightly again. With Destruction once again falling.

Its not been a good week for the Kruleboyz and this is also reflected in the four weeks stats with them falling to 35.0%. Come on GW, show them some love.

Here are the rolling four weeks win rates since we began tracking this information:

Faction Stats (Version)

The below stats are for every match in a grand tournament since the release of the new General’s Handbook.

A great week for Seraphon sees them extend a lead over the Daughters of Khaine with 9 clean sweeps to their 6.

Meanwhile at the lower end of the tables factions who have gone a whole tournament with five losses…

As for the win rates of each faction since the release of the new GHB:

In terms of faction popularity:

By rights, each faction should have an equal share of the player base, however we know this will not be the case due to either the appeal of the miniatures or the rules for the factions. Here we can see the most popular factions are Stormcast Eternals, Nighthaunt, Sylvaneth, Daughters of Khaine, Maggotkin of Nurgle, Seraphon and Skaven.

Currently it would appear that Seraphon players have the highest chance of going 5-0 at an even.

Brett: A rare venture into top spot by Stormcast with an army composition that is showing a lot of promise in the current meta. A few subtleties in the construction of the list though. Firstly the Grand Strategy – that will force you to hunt down the opponents battleline. It’s a fair chance that you’d be doing that to win anyway, and an equally fair chance that the drakes (Bounty Hunters) will be doing that if any try to hide. The Magnificent Bonus from Warlord is important, Warlord is rarely used by Stormcast, but they probably benefit the most from it with their Holy Commands. The chosen 2 are amoung the best, in one turn one of the raptors are shooting in both the Hero and Shooting phase.

That gives you an effective 9 Raptors worth of shooting (one turn, 18 shots for 36 potential damage). Call for aid returns the Vanquishers the first time they are killed (recycling if you will). The heroes are the standard combination – Lord Imperatant for 7″ charges, Lord Relictor for Translocate (here with the Tome to increase utility) and the Knight Incantor for casting an a clutch dispel (one guaranteed/battle). The 7″ charge applies to any Thunderstrike unit (includes the Lord, Storm Drake and Vanquishers as well as the Annihilators) put only one unit per turn. This list is sometimes called a gambler’s list – you are banking on the 7″ charge (82% chance with reroll) otherwise you have 10 wounds with a 4+ save waiting to die.

This list is a bit low in durability with 85 wounds, mostly on a 4+ vs the normal SCE 3+. And 3 Galletian Veteran units make 28 of those wounds. The Aetherwings and Vanquishers are valuable as screens to begin with to keep the raptors safe. Later turns their mobility (Aetherwings) and damage is useful for board control and grabbing objectives. The drakes provide mobile, swingy damage – their breath weapons can hit hard or whiff horribly. Even the number of drops plays into the strategy – does your opponent make you go first? Or do they try to blunt your shooting (unlikely)? His matches were basically melee armies and the DoK armed (10 Blood Sisters) are overmatched by the Raptors.

Quite a few good players are using variants of this list, with Prime Hunters gone it should see man improvement in SCE win rates. It’s not instant win by any measure but gives you the tools to get the job done. The high drops is a nice touch, as is Horrorghast to maximise the impact on low bravery units of that long range shooting.

Brett: Living cities with SCE based hammers was popular before Prime Hunters so no surprise they are back with the new season. Gotrek is arguably a Cities character since he hangs there between adventures. The book Grand Strategy is interesting, you need to control more terrain features than your opponent at the end of the battle. Interesting since that implies keeping the Dreadspears alive, 1 W and a 4+ save makes that “fun”. Doubly so since the Sorceress is likely taking wounds from them to empower her spells (kills a model for +2 to cast). Overall with the Tome there are 3 casters and 3 casts. Lifesurge can heal D6 wounds and Ironoak Skin makes incoming attacks -1 to wound.

The Battlemage has Wildform which you could put on Gotrek (+2 to run and charge) to make him more mobile. Otherwise the Stormdrakes or Anointed could benefit. The Stormdrakes and Gotrek are in bounty hunters (so Gotrek is rocking a 4 damage axe). Using the Anointed early might be risky but he is quite tanking particularly with Ironoak Artisan that also grants +1 to wound rolls with melee weapons, it shouldn’t apply to the mount unfortunately. A big block of Dragons to threaten any open flanks or open objectives, they can also be covered by the Anointed (and cover the Anointed). Lifesurge is very useful healing the 9 wound dragons for D6 every turn. A very mobile hard hitting block. And of course the Purple Sun for both it’s debuff and it’s board control abilities. Your opponent will normally try to avoid it as much as possible.

A dependable list, Gotrek is an interesting addition even though he suffers from a lack of mobility. It’s possible to play around him but with the Dragons and Purple Sun there isn’t that much board to play with. In this case Ryan’s opponents for the most part needed to come to him to play making it much easier to get Gotrek into combat.

Brett: Ahead of a possible new book (40k is getting new Daemons codex and Tzeentch is due soon, does that mean a new Khorne tome?). Khorne is another faction that really benefited with the end of Prime Hunters, it gives them more freedom with their Greater Daemons. Reapers of Vengence subfaction granting a Horrorghast effect (D3 extra fail battleshock) and a 3″ pile in and fight again command. Mage-Eater and Skullshatter are the mandatory trait/artefact but grant a spell deny and a 2+ spell ignore. The Crimson Crown effectively grants a free CP every round (5) that can only be used on the bearer’s warscroll ability (if they have one). In this case a 6″ pile in within 16″.

The key to Khorne in AoS are the big Daemons,, the Bloodthirsters and Skarbrand. Unusually there is no (Slaves to Darkness) Daemon Prince to affect movement/charges. Each of the Greater Daemons can do appalling levels of damage but each has an element of chance so they can also whiff horribly. The Unfettered Rage is probably the least damaging with a 12″ ranged attack and 6 melee attacks all doing D3 damage. The Insensate Range. His number of ranged attacks and to wound chance in melee degrade with wounds. Insensate Rage does D6 damage with his axe, and the number of attacks plus the Mortal Wounds (MW) caused on 6s degrade. The MW are to all units within 8″. Your best tactic against these is to get some damage in early to degrade them. Skarbrand needs to be treated differently though.

Skarbrand’s attacks increase as he degrades, and if he isn’t engaged in combat he fights next round as if he was in his lowest bracket. His main weapon is a flat 3 damage, his 8″ ranged attack is a 50% chance to inflict 1 MW for each successful attack and his Carnage 8MW. At lowest bracket it does that on a 1. Skarbrand either needs to be engaged all the time or removed early. Haven’t even mentioned the smaller heroes – Skarr can return to the field after death on a 8 (2D6) and is an anti horde fighter (either 5 attacks or the number of models within 3″), the Bloodsectator forces wizards to reroll successful casts within 16″. He also grants an additional attack to Khorne units within 16″. The Slaughter Priest is here to farm Blood Tithe points for summoning.

Finally we finish with the troops and summoning. Reinforced Bloodletters get +1 to hit (for 20 models in the unit), 6s do MWs, they can force rerolls on successful bravery rolls for the enemy and on a battleshock roll of 1 return D6 models to this unit. They only have 1 wound and a 5+ save so die easily. Bloodreavers are even more fragile but double up on the bonus attacks from the presence of a Bloodsectrator. Unnamed Beasts are very fragile but bring a lot of mobility and potentially grab outlying points or Battle Tactics. The Hexgorger is a nice touch, it is a prayer that is an endless spell. It inflicts a -2 to casting within 12″ and if a wizard within 8″ casts an 8, the spell fails, they forget the spell and take D6 MW. Nice.

That’s a lot to take in for a simple army that wants to get close, bash, stab, slash and generally maim you. You are best to shoot them from afar and hope for the best. When you look at his opponents though almost all of them had decent shooting (not the Skaven, those poor rats) but only one was able to use it effectively. That’s the difference between 24″ and 30″ range I suspect.

Brett: Another hero based list with 3 combat and 2 caster heroes, all with 10″+ movement. 3 Greater Demons is fairly common, we’ve already covered The Unfettered Rage above. Otherwise, and even with the Khorne elements, this is a casting army with 7 casts. The “Masters Command” on most of the leaders lets model, if slain, fight on Death. Otherwise Be’Lakor’s warscroll spell is enfeeblement giving an opposing unit -1 to wound. That’s on top of his once a game ability to stop pretty much all actions from a unit on a 3+ in each phase. Kairos is the epitome of a caster, his key ability is everytime he casts, dispels or unbinds he can set the lowest D6 (of the 2D6 roll) to match the highest D6. To summon the Purple Sun or his warscroll spell he only needs one 4 on 2 dice.

His Oracle of Eternity is also clutch, allowing him to set the number on a dice once per battle. It doesn’t have to be his roll, there is no range and no limit on what type of roll it’s used on. That’s on top of his 3 spells. You may be wondering why there is no Cogs in this list, the Blue Scribes are why. They have a warscroll spell with a casting value (CV) of 4 that allows other wizards to reroll. They can also copy spells and ensure successful casting once per hero phase on a 2+. Kairos then summons whatever Endless Spells are needed that turn. Umbral Spellportal to extend spells range, Purple Sun for threat and Lifeswarm for healing. The Contorted Epitome is mostly a combat unit but Ghost mist is a good choice to hide it’s approach.

The Flesh Hounds are here because outside of Gargants you need battle line. They are somewhat durable (2 wounds on a 5+), fast (8″) and annoying in combat. They are expendable and of course more units can be summoned. For LoFP it’s a battleline unit based on the Chaos god they represent (Bloodletters, Horrors, Demonettes etc). Belakor can summon any of these or 6 Furies. Chose which hero based on what you need and where it on the board (the reinforcements are arriving within 12″). A very broad range of abilities that it would be hard to track and apply but that means the list plays well into almost anything. The only loss was to 2nd place, Gotrek is great into daemons and the Stormdrake block is capable of clearing anything in this list in a turn. Once the Greater Daemons start dying this list is pretty fragile.

This Weeks Stats

The following stats are for the week ending 21st August only, essentially GT’s that took place on the 20th and 21st August.

Its not been a good week for the Kruleboyz and this is also reflected in the four weeks stats with them falling to 36.5%. Come on GW, show them some love.

Here are the rolling four weeks win rates since we began tracking this information:

Faction Stats (Version)

The below stats are for every match in a grand tournament since the release of the new General’s Handbook.

A great week for Seraphon sees them extend a lead over the Daughters of Khaine and Maggotkin of Nurgle with 7 clean sweeps to their 5.

Meanwhile at the lower end of the tables factions who have gone a whole tournament with five losses…

As for the win rates of each faction since the release of the new GHB:

Beasts of Chaos cling to their top spot but the Maggotkin of Nurgle seem to be having a resurgence and are not too far off their heels. Seraphon and Bonesplitterz are falling closely behind.

Kruleboyz fall back down the table and join Flesh-eater Courts, Ogors, Bonereapers and Gloomspite in the sub 45% win rate.

Chance of going 5-0

Currently it would appear that Seraphon players have the highest chance of going 5-0 at an even.

Rolling 4 Week Stats

The rolling stats includes all GT’s since the weekend of 23rd/24th July to the 13th/14th August. This covers a total of 831 players (-13 players) across 21 Grand Tournaments (+2 GT).

As the new release of the GHB takes hold it looks as though the overall effect is a positive one on the overall win rates for each Grand Alliance as they all get close to that 50.0% mark.

This is the first time in a rolling four week period where only two factions have fallen below the 45% win rate. Are things getting even better for AoS?

Here are the rolling four weeks win rates since we began tracking this information:

Faction Stats (Version)

The below stats are for every match in a grand tournament since the release of the new General’s Handbook.

Daughters of Khaine, Seraphon and Maggotkin of Nurgle now have both achieved 4 5-0 wins a piece.

Meanwhile at the lower end of the tables factions who have gone a whole tournament with five losses…

As for the win rates of each faction since the release of the new GHB:

Bonesplitterz relinquish their top spot to Beasts of Chaos, however they both have win rates of over 57%, as do Maggotkin of Nurgle and Big Waaagh!

At the other end of the table Gloomspite Gitz are the only sub 40% faction, their new book can’t come soon enough.

In terms of faction popularity:

By rights, each faction should have an equal share of the player base, however we know this will not be the case due to either the appeal of the miniatures or the rules for the factions. Currently it would appear that Big Waaagh! players have the highest chance of going 5-0 at an event, however this is from a small player base so will fall as more players register under the Big Waaagh! banner.

Top Three AoS Lists for Summer of Sigmar – Gamers Guild Grand Tournament

This is the Top Three AoS Lists for the Summer of Sigmar Grand Tournament that took place in Tempe, Arizona, USA on the 6th and 7th of August. It involved 16 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5 game tournament. This was their inagural event and they have a venue that can handle quite a few more. Lets hope we see it grow in coming years.

Before I jump into the Top Three AoS Lists, I wanted to remind everyone of our friendly Discord server where you can join in the conversation with the Woehammer crew and suggest articles or series for the website.

TOTAL POINTS: 1980/2000

Brett: Another army eschewing the archers for the stabby queens reflecting the new battletome. 5 Blood Sister units including a double reinforced group of bounty hunter murder elves, fun. Rounding out the list the Bloodwrack Medusa is the General and Khinerai Heartrender for mobile threat. Ultimately this is a 6 drop list, a reasonable chance that they won’t decide first turn.

The high drops is a facet of having the Blood Sisters split between Bounty Hunters and Expert Conquerors. It’s not clear if the event allowed book traits (which the Khinerai play into really well) or just GHB however the list provides coverage for any outcome. Zainthar Kar is required to make the Blood Sisters battle line and the opportunity for 35 Blood Sisters. Mind Razor and Shadow Stone (+1 to casting) to try to get an additional -1 rend. Ignoring effects from Blood Rites (like +1 to wound) those 15 Blood sisters can expect 38 hits (exploding 6s) and 24 wounds – 48 into Galletian Veterans. With 2 wounds, 5+ save and 6+ (can be 5+) ward you have to devote real resources to shifting blood sisters. Zainthar Kar gives them fight on death, removing the large unit without shooting would be dicey.

Shadow Queen/Morathi are another hard nut, 3 spells across the 6 known to DoK. Those spells read like some of the best across multiple books including increased rend, rebuffs and a teleport. The Melisa only has one cast but 2 dispels. Enough to cause issues for a magic army. And it looks like that’s what’s happened with the army taking all flavours of elf and some star crossed lizards to take the event 5/0

CORE BATTALIONS

***Command Entourage – Magnificent

TOTAL POINTS: 2000/2000

Brett: Good to see a Slaves to Darkness army make the podium in a 2 day event particularly as Ravagers. No Archeon, Be’Lakor or even a manticore just Lords, Sorcerors and even a Chaos Warriors. Effective here with a 4/0/1 result, the only loss being to the winner.

Taking Tzeentch as the chaos mark increases resilience with reroll 1s on saves and a 5+ ward against spells. On a 20 strong block of Chaos Warriors (in Eternal Conquerers) that’s a real problem to shift. While in a unit > 10 they have a 3+ save and a 5+ ward (half ward – it’s only against Mortal Wounds) with the shields. That’s 120 effective wounds (Rend 0). Their weaknesses is movement at 5” unless Mask of Darkness is available on a Chaos Sorcerer and both do. They are helped on the run and charge by the Hornblower. The Knights are hammers, they want to charge using their 10″ mobility. They to have +1 to run and charge from the Hornblowers.

The Chaos Lord is a combat hero with reroll wound rolls (and reroll hits against Order) and has a MW spell in leui of a ranged weapon. Lastly there is Krondspine. He’s fast moving and capable of deleting things quickly. Bold move, he costs enough to limit your choices in either troops or heros, Tyler choose to take weaker heroes. Ravagers was a good choice allowing additional traits. After that this list is all about getting those blocks of Warriors onto objectives and keeping them there by using the Knights. Krondspine is about taking down a deathstar or important hero.

Looking his path through the event, the StD list would struggle to deal enough damage to the Warriors, as would most of the other lists. The mobility of the DoK army we just looked at combined with DoK book Battle Tactics (which you can’t interact with well) obviously caused the army to struggle but otherwise this is a really well thought out approach and well deserved result.

CORE BATTALIONS

TOTAL POINTS: 1970/2000

Brett: An interesting variation of Sylvaneth and a brave move to take all of the new units. With, it has to be said, the Purple Sun. The mobility of Tree-Revenants with the 3 overgrown terrain pieces from the start of the battle, makes them one of if not the best unit in the army at the moment. They are amazing at securing Battle Tactics.

This army has all of the new Sylvaneth units from the Revenant Seekers to Spiterider Lancers and Gossamid Archers. I haven’t seen an army with all of them before and like most of us don’t have a lot of experience with them. The Seekers and Lancers provide a lot of mobility outside of teleports which is something Sylvaneth struggle with a bit. They offer some quality attacks, without buffs I worry about the amount of damage they do but it’s reasonable. The ability to return a model of the Seekers is great in this army – the Lancers and everything else have 5 wounds or less and can be returned. Return 2 Spiteriders in a game and you’ve almost recovered the cost.

The Gossamids are a frustrating unit, they are vunerable to shooting with only a 12″ range. They need to be hidden which doesn’t make sense given their anti combat role (retreat when charged). But they have a role where you teleport them to an objective (or near one) that has a thin force on it. You can even open an objective to a Tree Revenant by pulling a combat unit away. That’s not to forget the Treelord Ancient and Wargsong. With the Arcane Tome they have 4 spells, both are deicated to Awakended Wyldwoods (expect at least another per turn) and then buffing the impact of the woods. As Gnarlwood they also get improved casting near Wyldwoods. Another interesting army from this event.

One of the interesting impacts of this approach is its hard for an army like Ironjawz to identify an alpha strike target. Even if they get the Warsong it’s not going to put you on the back foot too much. Other than the winner’s evil Blood Sister’s list he was unbeaten through the event taking both combat and shooting armies.

TOTAL POINTS: 1990/2000

Brett: I grabbed this one just because we aren’t seeing a lot of Legion of the First Prince armies right now. This is a very interesting take including some heavy hitters (Belakor and Fateweaver) with Krondspine rather than another Deamon Prince/Greater Deamon. I’m a fan of the Contorted Epitome, love to see it in the army. Mobile, lots of casting and so dangerous in combat.

Fateweaver brings a lot, 3 casts, auto dispell of 1 endless spell and the ability to change dice for casting, unbinding or dispell rolls. That’s before gift of change. Plaguebearers are a good choice for objectives, Bloodletters are cheap but fragile. If they charge or are teleported though they can mess up some archers. Belakor and the Krondspine don’t need an introduction nor does the Purple Sun. The Umbral Spellportal is an autotake in a Tzeetch army or if Fateweaver is in the army.

This, to me, is a really fun army. A few small troop units and 4 big, fun models with lots of abilities to toy with your opponent. He lost his last 3 rounds but I bet they were still fun. Hitting a Bastilidon with Belakor and Fateweaver sounds like fun to me, the same about putting an Epitome into small heroes from any factions.

This Weeks Stats

The following stats are for the week ending 31st July only, essentially GT’s that took place on the 30th and 31st July.

Rolling 4 Week Stats

The rolling stats includes all GT’s since the weekend of 16th/17th July to the 6th/7th August. This covers a total of 844 players (+177 players) across 19 Grand Tournaments (+4 GT).

As the new release of the GHB takes hold it looks as though the overall effect is a positive one on the overall win rates for each Grand Alliance as they all get close to that 50.0% mark.

Here are the rolling four weeks win rates since we began tracking this information:

Faction Stats (Version)

The below stats are for every match in a grand tournament since the release of the new General’s Handbook.

Daughters of Khaine and Seraphon now have both achieved 3 5-0 wins a piece.

After the last weekend, all the factions have now achieved at least one weekend where they’ve had an army go to 4 wins.

Meanwhile at the lower end of the tables factions who have gone a whole tournament with five losses…

As for the win rates of each faction since the release of the new GHB:

Bonesplitterz increase their win rate to over 60%, while at the other end of the table Gloomspite Gitz fall to 35.8%

In terms of faction popularity:

By rights, each faction should have an equal share of the player base, however we know this will not be the case due to either the appeal of the miniatures or the rules for the factions. Here we can see the most popular factions are Stormcast Eternals, Nighthaunt, Sylvaneth, Daughters of Khaine, Maggotkin of Nurgle, Seraphon and Ironjawz.

Currently it would appear that Kharadron Overlords players have the highest chance of going 5-0 at an event closely followed by Beasts of Chaos and Hedonites of Slaanesh

TOTAL POINTS: (2000/2000)

Brett: Stormcast is an interesting faction playing a little more like Custodes than the Space Marines they are always accused of being. They have high moral and good saves making them hard to shift but they’re damage isn’t amazing. They don’t rely on amazing complicated synergies and casting certain spells the right way to unlock a combo. That also makes them a bit easier to know and counter so to get the best out of them you need a good general.

Alan’s gone 5/0 taking down some solid armies that play well into Stormcast. Unfortunately they were melee heavy which are maybe vulnerable to Stormdrakes. The army has 2 small heroes with 1 prayer, 1 cast and 2 denies, 3 small screening units and 2 massive hammers in the Stormdrakes. Stormdrakes in Bounty Hunters increases their damage (to Galletian Veterans) by 43%. Bounty Hunters has the biggest effect on Damage 1 weapons giving a 100% increase. Both the Relictor and Gardus are decent combat support charaters as well.

The Liberators are a screen and hold objectives, within Hallowed Knights they also fight on death. Not combat power houses but they have a 3+ save with a 5+ ward if within 12″ of Gardus. The Holy Command isn’t shown but was likely Call to Aid, which allows the return of a unit of Liberators. In a pinch The Lord Relictor can translocate a unit across the board, it has to be wholly within 9″ of him so the drakes will struggle. Translocation gets answered on 2+ (he gets +1 to prayers) and has a reroll so at some point you can expect him to move a unit. He could even respawn a unit of Liberators once they are killed next to him and then throw them to a lightly or unoccupied objective. Can be a really easy way to get a Battle Tactic.

The heart of this list is the 2 big mobile, 12″ move, hammers. Against armies with minimal shooting they are able to roam the board and not including shooting can put out 80 wounds a turn. Can they one shot Teclis – yes. Their shooting is swingy with each dragon having a 33% chance of doing nothing, D3 damage or D6 damage. A nice bonus but not something to rely on. It’s also good to punish small heroes or other units behind screens before hitting the screens. Scions of the Storm makes sense in Season 1 where the Stormkeep’s counts as 3 on objectives is neutered. If a list has a lot of shooting you can keep something back for later deployment or drop Gardus close to some Stormdrakes that are going to be in heavy combat.

Dropping Gardus from the sky ensures the drakes are within 12″ for his 5+ ward but also his ability to make Hallowed Knights fight again on death and his extra attack. 4 drakes will definitely destroy god models like Teclis in that scenario. Gardus also grants a reroll charges on top of the Stomdrake reroll charge on the turn they arrive. Pity we don’t have space for a Lord Imperatent to give a 7″ to the drakes. With 36 wounds they are very difficult to clear in a phase, once they are in they will tie up units for sometime. The drakes coherency rules and mobility give you a significant amount of board control and the ability to influence your opponent’s options.

Prime Hunters really hit Stormcast by putting a mark on their best units hitters (Fulminators, Stormdrake and Raptors). With Holy Command, Raptors aren’t that attractive, however the other units are. I wonder if we will see a resurgence in placings now, there are still a lot of Stormcast players.

TOTAL POINTS: 2000/2000

Brett: A Teclis led Lumineth army takes second on the back of a 4/1, losing to Stormcast in the 4th round. Could be a tag line from an early 3rd edition tournament. In any event Jonathan has taken the “alternative” path with a Warden heavy list to support Teclis and his band of mages. To round out this approach there are 3 Endless Spells, because that’s what Teclis is for, getting that Purple Sun into your face. Even when he casts 4 spells they are auto cast on a 10, they are all auto matic. That leaves one spell on a 10 to cast; Protection of Teclis (5+ ward) for everything within 18″. On subsequent rounds he’s free to cast anything including Speed of Hysh and Transporting Vortex in case mobility is a concern.

In the current magic/endless spell meta, or what seems to be a magic heavy meta, Teclis is a great choice. He can automatically dispel 1 endless spell and automatically unbind one as well. No Purple Sun for you. Umbral Spell portal increases the range for him to hit you with Storm of Searing Light and he isn’t bad in combat. He is a lot of points. Otherwise the list includes bodyguards for the Scinari and Dawnriders for taking remote action, board control and harassment. 14″ move and with Speed of Hysh (28″) make them a constant threat. Then there are the 2 big anvil units. The wardens are slow moving but counting for 60 on objectives makes them something you need to deal with. You want to whittle them down early preferably before they can cast Power of Hysh (MW on 5+)

+1 to cast from the Zaitrec Nation, Teclis granting 4+ wards against spells and a spell reflect like ability mean that spells are trivial to this army. Despite a potential threat from archers Jonathan defeated an Idoneth list with 4 units of archers (3 x Reavers and 1 x Sentinals for good measure). I wouldn’t want to be those Sentinals when Teclis catches them. The results show the effectiveness of 4 Stormdrakes vs units of 2, Jonathan easily beat a SCE army centred on units of 2 but lost to the bigger unit. I feel sorry for the Seraphon casting list without Kroak (2nd round), talk about bringing a knife to a gun fight. Great performance.

Brett: Daughters of Khaine have a new book and Witch Aelves are good again. A good run through the tournament taking the new hotness from Death (Nighthaunt) and the Tree loving Sylvaneth both fresh from their own recent books. AoS Coach just covered a list like this with Marcella Helu if you’d like a more in depth discussion. Also great to see the new Hero for DoK – the High Gladiatrix.

Before going into the army too far though I have to acknowledge that the tournament was allowing book Battle Traits and Grand Strategies. Bloodthirsty Zealots is very easy to accomplish (either fight or be destroyed) and the army itself is built to take advantage of at least 4 book BT. The Khinerai can easily accomplish 2 themselves with very little interaction. That’s all I’ll say about it.

Otherwise this is a very solid army. The Shadowqueen is able to tank a bit but really you want to go first to power up the Witch Aelves and unleash them. They are +1 to charge from in the first round, and +1 to wound and -1 rend if they are within 12″ of the Gladiatrix. Sisters of Slaughter outfitted to tank as well with an improved save and reflecting hits on 6s.

With all of Cheryl’s opponents being similarly combat based until the last round, the fights would have been brutal and resolved by who attacked first. As a low rend, 1 damage army they don’t give up much to Nighthaunt and each Witch Aelve has, at full strength, the ability to remove complete units. They are vulnerable to the 4 Drake block, you could play this destroying the troops and ignore Morathi.

Brett: Are you given to the dark side but not sure what faction suits you best? Do you love flexibility and never making a decision? If you said YES YES YES then Legion of the First Prince is for you. Taking the fallen(?) of the daemon worlds, Legions of the First Prince provides them a home. Mike has gone with the bigger daemons for punch with a few smaller daemons to hit objectives. But where is Belakor?

Unfortunately that means the army misses out on the rerolls for the battleline demons that Belakor allows, and the heals. But on the upside, beyond the power of the Greater Demons Mike was able to summon units from Khorne, Nurgle and Tzeentch depending on what he needed. The Plaguebearers are hard to move off objectives while the Flesh Hounds provide mobile threat. Some shooting from the Furies, stabby Bloodletters and the annoying Nurglings.

The results bear out that this approach can be effective. Along the way Mike beat armies that included 40 Sentinels and 30 Blood Sisters, elsewhere considered the scourge of daemons. Their nemesis appears to be red headed dwarfs who cut a swathe through them. An innovative list with a number of tricks from the Demon Prince from halving movement to spell eating (good in the Purple Sun meta). Good to see life in the Legion ahead of updated books.
