Top Three AoS Lists for DaBoyz GT 2022

This is the Top Three AoS Lists for DaBoyz GT 2022 that took place in Texas, USA on 19th and 23th November. It involved 66 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5 game tournament.

Danny: BoC stands for ‘Best of Chaos’ right now. The book as it stands is kluged, retro-fitted and duct-taped together, in a failed attempt to keep its leathery, behooved insides from spilling out all over the winners podium. Peek inside and you’ll find a sludgey morass of keywords, a bunch of new rules sellotaped in and the ability to use the new versions of some other chaos scrolls and the ‘old’ (well, in between…) versions of other stuff like blood-slick ground Khorne Daemon Prince to halve charges/run rolls.

GW are onto a good thing with 3e books and I’m sure the new BoC book will sort this mess out – because it turns out ‘keep the points the same, but give everything +2 rend and a 4+ rally, along with use of the best melee warscrolls from the new Tzeentch book’ kinda makes for a good army – despite the recent points ‘hikes’.

This list takes the usual stuff – a Shaggoth for cheap casting and a platform for the ‘tanglehorn Familiars’ which literally just stops an enemy wizard within 12″ from casting…anything… and access to the Hailstorm spell to halve the move/run/charge rolls of an enemy unit within 21″. Bet you didn’t realise even their lore was broken.

2x 6 Enlightened on Discs on loan from the shiny new Tzeentch portal because apparently everything with a beak and hooves has to stick together? A giant blob of 30 Tzaangors on hoof form a big, buffable blob and summons in god knows what else at a rate of knots.

Nothing in this game is an auto-win and it’s entirely possible to rupture your hamstrings while leaning over a table to push this many models around so congrats to Jiwan for staying standing and getting the 5-0.

Edit: We’ve edited the below and removed the reference to the Krondspine being a source of 3d6 charges. Danny was thinking of Kragnos at the time…. he really wants one….

Danny: Ironjawz have definitely struggled this season, due to a one dimensional playstyle and, frankly, their book having been seriously powercrept. However, they can still pile on a whole load of pressure and if you’re not prepared for it, they can start a chain reaction of activations that can end games fast if you can’t tank it.

One of their weaknesses is getting into position – something the Spinedog obviously helps with. The fact it can lock down multiple units also potentially allows the gore-gruntas to choose more favourable engagements and gives them something to chuck into targets that would ordinarily blunt their charges, or of course preventing scary stuff cleaning up the pigs that IJ rely on to do everything.

You don’t have a huge degree of flexibility in a pig-heavy list (which is all IJ can realistically field in this Season) so let’s look at the Maw-krusha, the one thing with tactical choices. Brian has opted for Touched by the Waagh and Arcane Tome combo, giving him the ability to do d3 MWs to a nearby unit (enemy or friendly) and get the same value as a bonus to cast – in this case the +1 to wound spell and flaming weapon (thanks to the magnificent from command entourage) for extra damage when necessary. Of course with Spinedog bonded, he can potentially be up to a +4 to cast!

Spinedog occupies a weird niche atm and may still be controversial, but if it has a home in any army it’s Orruks atm, thematically and in terms of shoring up their weaknesses. And going 5-0 with IJ these days is definitely an accomplishment. It would be great if they didn’t have to rely on the Spinedog to do it, but in the meantime – big gratz to Brian!

Randal: Carl is at it again with another strong Kharadron Overlords list. This one tosses Gotrek to the side in favor of taking a second Ironclad. Also gone is the Flare-Pistol, a casualty of being a double Battle Regiment, but the list gains a Volley Cannon and two very important Great Endrinworks in the Zonbarcorp ‘Dealbreaker’ Battle Ram and The Last Word.

These two powerful mount traits add a level of resiliency to big wiffs from the dice, allowing the two boats to claw back into a game when something goes wrong. The Last Word allows the powerful Volley Cannon to fire at the end of the opponent’s Charge Phase if a unit ends their charge within 3” of that Ironclad making a scary Unleash Hell absolutely devastating, especially to big chaff units. The Ram, roll dice equal to the charge roll with mortal wounds on a 4+, serves as a risky backup plan if a shooting phase does not go well to finish off a unit giving the army a small amount of mortal wounds which the army overwise lacks.

This list is less of an alpha-strike list as his previous list was and more of a control and positioning army. It wants to play cagey, determining when and where engagements happen, and controlling the flow of the game. The big downside is that it is still weak to mortal wounds and has almost no mortal wound output itself. It is still a solid list but is going to require an experienced and knowledgeable pilot as mistakes are going to be harshly punished.

Declan: 4-1… with Gitz. Well done to Anthony for a cracking result. Obviously the key to the army is Kragnos for his ability to charge most monsters off the board, give 3D6 charges to the squig herd (and himself) and generally cause a distraction. But the tech here is the Squig Herds and Sneaky Snufflers. With Expert Conquerors they each count as 3 on objectives (that’s 108 for the full 36 herd). They also rally on a 4+ so that’s where a lot of command points are going.

Then add in the Snufflers for +1 attack for each squig and they are not just an anvil with loads of wounds – they can be a hammer too. I was surprised that they (squig herd) went down in points in November, but definitely worth taking now!

Comments: Fangs of Sotek continues it’s long run as a great list taking another 5/0 and 1st. This time there is no Kroak and only one Bastilidon but there are two terrifyingly large Salamander Hunting Packs. Otherwise it’s a fairly conventional list with one large (30) Skink unit and 2 x 10 skinks, 5 Saurus Guard (bodyguards), Astrolith, Starmaster, Starpriest and priest. 2 Endless Spells to take advantage of the strong spell casting – Horrorghast and Purple Sun. Noted elsewhere this works well as a combination with Fangs but increasing rend (for the Ark and Skinks) and making battleshock tests terrifying. Back to the Salamanders, each has 2 Salamanders with their 7 attacks, 4 ranged, all hitting/wounding on 3s with -2 rend and D3 damage, 6s do D3 mortal wounds. For each pack that’s an average of 8 damage + 3 MWs. But that could spike as high 21 MWs (extremely unlikely).

Again another list that really wants to make you come to them, the salamanders will stay behind Skinks where feasible to limit charges. Mostly avoid the 30 Skink block. For the most part Tom’s opponents had either limited shooting or limited range leaving them exposed to the Skinks/Salamanders. KO might have had the best of it but Skinks can be teleported or summoned aiding scoring and blocking ships. Good result.

Comments: Skaven in 2nd place with a rational list, still has a Warlock for humor but staying safe with solid heroes and clanrat/stormfiend battle line. The only endless spell is Cogs, that leaves point to run 2 x Verminlords and a Grey Seer with the now standard battleline. No Gnawholes listed but I assume some were taken. The Warpgrinder works as a Gnawhole for a single unit that can be placed in reserve with the Warpgrinder and placed at the end of a movement phase. You place the extra unit within 13″ of the Warpgrinder and 9″ from the enemy. Stormfiends to the rear? Like most Skaven lists there is a lot going on, the Grey Seer brings a mini Purple Sun (MWs and -1 to hit rolls for 1 unit).

The Deceiver has his dreaded skitterleap for a teleport that leaves him 6″ from enemies and Warbringer can grant fight on death for 3 units. This is a great combo, you can be aggressive with both the Stormfiends and Deceiver while holding the centre with the Warbringer and granting the Clannrats fight on death. The Warpgrinder teleport, with clanrats also gives some exciting options for scoring. He’s won qgainst very stiff competition with the 3 hammers and his options. That includes beating both flavours of DoK and an Annihilator SCE list.

Comments: Really solid SBGGL effort, running 3rd after a 3rd round loss to Benjamin (2nd) and his evil Skaven. Who has the moral high ground between Chaos and Death? A selection of the best units in the codex with Blood Knights, Grave Guard, 3 really nasty Vampire Lords and a zombie dragon. 3 Behemoths, all dragons, are the primary hammers. The list doesn’t need to castle though – Mannfred works well with the Blood Knights with Vigour of Undeath (12″ aura of +1 to hit and wound). Prince Vhordrai works with the Vampire Lord giving the Vampire Lord the ability to fight in the hero phase. They massive movement (starts at 14″) so it’s hard to screen them out. All of the units gain a ward near a gravesite, try to fight them further than 12″ from gravesites if possible.

As always with SBGL controlling the gravesites becomes increasingly important. They can summon units back through them or use them to summon reserves. The 2 units of Skeletons and the Grave Guard can all be returned at half strength making it a bit like whack a mole trying to keep them down. I feel the 6″ charge from the Deceiver and the Warbringer’s fight on death for adjacent units would have been the keys to bluntening the impact of the dragons. It’s a remarkable list and 4/1 is a good result, in line with similar SBGL performances we’ve seen recently.

Comments: A genuine horde list, makes me wonder why Expert Conquerors wasn’t one of the battalions. 87 models altogether with 4 small heros and a Krondspine. The spells are a mix of MWs and buffing spells (special mention to Wild Rampage – reroll melee wound rolls but -1 to your saves). Cogs and Ravening Direflock are the chosen endless spells, Cogs is interesting, most of the chosen spells have casts around 5 and 6 but this list is short on buffs for casting. Ravening Direflock prevents non BoC units within 12″ from using Rally or Inspiring Presence. That’s not bad for 50 points. I’m assuming that there is a Herdstone in the list but not shown.

This is a list that seeks to outlast it’s opponent,then clap back from Turn 3 onwards. Board wide they are -1 rend until Turn 3 when it becomes -2 rend. Bestigors from Turn 3 are -3 rend total. The play here then is to screen using the Ungors (both kinds) while the Bestigors stay close to the Herdstone for Rally on 4+ (starts at 12″ and increases 6″ per turn). The leaders can pray on the Ungor for additional Primordial Points that allowing summoning more units. Krondspine plays really well into this strategy – your opponent can’t ignore it and sometimes will concentrate early damage on Krondspine. That increases the number of other units that make it to Turn 3.

It worked really well here against armies that had smaller units with good saves. Against -3 rend even a 3+ save looks weak. Then there is the Skaven. Their hammer units would be removing 3 units from this list in a turn. The fight on death is really punishing as well, BoC have few wounds and poor saves so their increased rend most likely leads to their quicker death. Clever build and a deserving 4/1.

Top Three AoS Lists for Justice Series GT

This is the Top Three AoS Lists for the Justice Series GT that took place in Liverpool, UK on 15th and 16th October. It involved 80 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5 game tournament.

The Justice Series has been going on for some time now and this is not the first iteration, and – whilst I haven’t been to the venue yet – it is getting good reviews. Ritchie is the manager of the store and gaming venue and he is very visible on Twitter, as well as being a very good player on the UK scene.

They have also just announced their new mascot / character – Justice – who is a female mage knight. You can find out more about her here.

Comments: Well, if ever there was a White Dwarf article that had a bigger impact on any gaming system I’ve not seen it. Dan & Freddie (see below) won their last two games with the Beasts, with very similar armies. The only reason you don’t see this as often is because the Dragon Ogre sculpts are big and expensive.

Games Workshop – tearing up a meta near you

Expect some changes in the new Battlescroll due to be released in October, but based on the previous Battlescrolls I wouldn’t expect them to suddenly become rubbish.

Comments: To say that I’m running out of things to say about Beasts is an understatement (see above). We’re seeing loads of them in the top threes at the moment and they seem to be a great counter to Maggotkin of Nurgle who Freddie beat twice on the way to his 5-0. Well done again!

Comments: It’s an Archaon list, without Archaon… just lots of Varanguard changing the definition of hero and letting Slaves to Darkness take loads of them.

And they come back – albeit in smaller numbers…! Wow. They are fast, hit like a ton of bricks and can use hero abilities. You don’t want to be on the receiving end.

This might be one of the last times we see them from this current book so it’s great to see Phil get them to 3rd in a tough tournament. Also a special shout out to Piotr who drew with Phil in the last game, but lost on points scored in the first four games — such small differences.

Comment: I love Skaven, and had an army of them in Warhammer 8th Edition (and have even rebased some of them), and so I keep an eye out on their successes. Gabe hasn’t gone with Stormfiends, but has taken Night Runners and Gutter Runners. The only thing it’s missing to make it fully Eshin, is the Assassins, but he’s got Thanquol and a Verminlord instead so it’s definitely a Skaven list.

This is another list where I say I don’t understand what it does, or how it does it.

At 225 points I’ve not seen Slynk or his Clawpack before… it’s more Eshin so Gabe’s keeping on theme, but they can deploy outside 6″ and near terrain at the end of turn 1, so Gabe can pin in the enemy a little. The blighter can fight as well… as you’d hope for 225!

It’d be really interesting to know how this works, so I’m not suggesting go out and replicate this list, but it is an example that there are still new lists out there that can compete.

This is the Top Three AoS Lists for the Michigan GT that took place in USA on 1st and 2nd October. It involved 72 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5 game tournament.

Brett: One of the top ranked players takes a maxi tournament with Ossiarch Bonereapers (OBR), an underrepresented faction. That it’s an unusual list, is a bonus. No Mortek guard but still plenty of casting with Arkhan and the Soulmason. The Arkhan’s casting bonuses will help with the Endless spells, everyone knows Ravenaks by now but the Bone-tithe Shrieker is a bit different. It prevents rally or inspiring presence with 12″ and grants +1 to hit to OBR within 12″. There is a lot on the warscrolls even for the troops, but the short version is that Arkhan can heal D3 wounds or return a model with less than 3 wounds to the Deathriders who, have bonus damage on the charge and can do mortal wounds on a 5+ from a command point.

The Stalkers have a range of bonuses that they they can use, including re-rolling their hits or saves or, +1 to rend/ damage. They have a command to gain re-rolls to runs and charges as well as fly. This list is attempting to deal with the lack of mobility that hampers OBR (Mortek move 4″), and brings a lot of focussed combat power. Stalkers are a really flexible unit, being able to decide whether to be tanky or aggresive each turn. It’s possible to use Arkhan’s command to increase the Soulmason’s spell range to 30″, granting them re-rolls on 1s as well as extra rend and damage in a turn. With 45 attacks at -2 rend, 2 damage, hitting and wounding on 3s. They’re in Expert Conquerors for maximum objective control.

He faced down several Incarnates, a block of 4 Stormdrakes and a Leviadon on his way to number 1, attesting to the effectiveness of the approach in the right hands. Bill scored exceptionally well, the only player with about 200 points and more than 30 in front of 2nd (who he didn’t face).

Brett: Both Mortarchs, the expected 3 Endless Spells, death ward, heals and units that return on death to make a surprisingly hard to kill list. Legion of Blood with Arcane Expertise and a foot Vampire Lord to use the +2 to casting/dispels/unbinds for the first cast. Having one of the Mortarchs cast Cogs to make this a very high probability of Purple Sun on demand. The Mortarchs and Blood Knights make up most of the power in the list, while the Black Knights provide mobile threat, containment and objective grabbers. The Skeletons, Grave Guard and Black Knights could be set up off the board (1 in reserve for every deployed unit) and summoned in any phase via a gravesite. Mostly useful against elite armies that can’t cover all four objectives.

The Blood Knights and Grave Guard are both included in Bounty Hunters, and with 2 Mortarchs this is a 4 drop list. This can place it at the mercy of their opponents in some cases. A lot of control and resilience is possible, but SBGL is a little low in outright damage. Michael won all 5 games but his scoring was average dropping him to 2nd despite his 5/0.

Brett: Another good result for Beasts since their Tome Celestial. The increase in rend is particularly useful when you don’t face Nighthaunt. Roger paid for that by facing SBGL in his first 3 rounds. As for the list itself, a Khorne marked Daemon Prince for anti-charge and because he is a combat monster with always fights first. A Tzaangor Shaman that gives +1 to hit for the Tzaangor within 12″ and a Great Bray Shaman giving +3″ movement to all Gor units within 12″. Although the Tzaangor Enlightened are very mobile (great for Barge Through or even Against the Odds) this list is built around making you come to them (Defend What’s Ours, Grand Strategy). With the Gors to provide screens that leaves the Daemon Prince and Tzaangor to pick their targets.

Roger had a great run, 4/0 until the final round where he met Bill and was defeated. He finished just 3 points behind 2nd. The Tzaangor Enlightened wouldn’t be a great match into the Necropolis Stalkers leaving Roger a little short on dealing with Bill’s list.

Brett: Be’Lakor (the other prince) led Slaves to Darkness list with an almost standard list of heroes. Two of the newest warbands (Chaos Legionaries) as battleline, suggesting a heroic painting effort. These guys were released very recently and, when close to Be’Lakor gain a +1 to their wound rolls. They aren’t really damage powerhouses though, just like the Marauders. But this is where the Chaos Lord on Manticore and Khorne marked Daemon Prince come in with their damage and mobility. The Chaos Sorcerer and Lord, as well as the Warshrine and Varanguard are Tzeentch marked (re-rolling save rolls of 1 within 12″ and a 5+ spell ward) with the remainder of the list as Chaos Undivided for Be’Lakor to work with.

Finally the Mindsteale is on a really cheap mobile monster to be best friends with Horroghast (Mindstealer applies a -2 to bravery). Most of the power is concentrated in the heroes particularly Be’Lakor. At this stage of the edition everyone knows Be’Lakor and he’s always a target for mortal wounds and shooting. Unfortunately most of the list is pretty fragile, they will screen briefly but it wouldn’t be hard to remove most of them in a single turn. After which the combat threats are exposed. Alternatively those heroes are the most mobile elements and can have themselves isolated without screens. Michael played around those issues and took down Seraphon and Fyreslayer lists losing to a clever Cities list with 30 Irondrakes and 10 Protectors. The Protectors would wade through most of this list while shrugging the incoming damage.

Brett: The newly rejuvenated (Tome Celestial) Beasts of Chaos going 5 and 0 in a major again. Peter has anyone had a 5/0 Kruleboyz recently? (Nope – Peter) Dragon Ogres are one of the stronger units in the battletome, and need Dragon Ogre Shaggoths to make them battleline. Combining their wounds/number of attacks with the increasing Rend available from the Herdstone makes them a dangerous opponent for pretty much anything. With Gnashing Jaws and Krondspine there is a lot of board coverage for a low model count army. The Herdstone isn’t listed and he’s taken Sundering Blades (-1 rend for a unit) but surely you have to take the Herdstone (it’s no cost of course).

Gavespawn is an interesting Greatfray which makes having mulitple heroes a good idea (they return as a Chaos Spawn on a 2+) and a command ability for an extra attack. The mandatory command trait gives an additional unbind and the mandatory artefact (Mutating Gnarlblade) does damage to the bearer on a hit roll of 1. It also adds 2 damage, on a Shaggoth that’s a 5 damage weapon. Command Entourage is used here to gain an addtional artefact for Arcane Tome, giving the whole army 3 casts and 4 unbinds. Hailstorm halves an opposing units movement (including charges) to limit movement and charging sheningans. Combine the reduced movement with Gnashing Jaws you can easily see 10MW a turn out of Jaws if you aim at slow moving units (5″ and less)

The Shaggoth’s are very useful leaders with casting, healing (not spell dependent) and being reasonably tanky with decent attacks. The weapons mix on the Dragon Ogres is interesting, almost ensuring split firing? As one damage weapons they are a natural to be included in Bounty Hunters. The Chaos Spawn are a favourite unit of mine in Slaves or Beasts. 2D6 movement and 2D6 attacks mean that they are often underestimated but they are great at grabbing objectives and are surprising difficult to remove.

The Doombulls are another different choice in a Dragon Ogre army but they have a decent attack profile and 8 wounds with MW on 6s. Charge them in early with the hope they do some decent damage, your opponent is going to have to take them seriously and devote real resources to killing them. And they come back 83% of the time. Serious distraction for 2 or 3 rounds. Solid example of army building to take advantage of solid warscrolls and army abilities. A deserving winner with a strong and fun army.

Brett: An increasingly common army from Maggotkin, Lord of Affliction with Blightlords, as General so they are battleline twice (since Drowned Men lets them be battleline). Be’Lakor and Bloab to lend weight and casting to the army. This style of army has the advantage of avoiding Galletian Veterans to blunt Bounty Hunters with good mobility and very high resiliance. It forces your opponent to counter you and lets you spread or concentrate depending on the mission. Everythng except the Bloab can fly and he brings the flies.

Be’Lakor can work as an independent hammer but better is arguably better if supported by one or two of the smaller Blightlord units. That lets him control an entire flank and dare your opponent into an aggresive play to try to remove him. The Blightlords add mortals through disease points. Alternatively you can castle the lot and snipe objectives with the Blightlords. Be’Lakor can’t be too isolated since he represents half of the casts/unbinds of the army. Mariusz has taken advantage of the high bravery of chaos units to pick Bloodthirsty for a free charge reroll.

Bounty Hunters on 2 of the Blightlord units including the reinforced one, solid choice almost doubling their damage situationally. I’m expecting to see a move back to the lower drop battalions in coming weeks, it already looks like there is movement that way with so many armies avoiding Galletian Veterans. The army scored exceptionally well through the weekend coming second with only 3 vicotories (but no losses). The army had draws against a Maggotkin army with a Great Unclean One and large block of Plaguebringers, the other was a Bonesplitterz triple Wurgog/Big Stabba army. The damage output of this army might be a little low, particularly if Be’Lakor is destroied early and these armies play into that.

This is a very good army which plays into missions well. Taking it to second in a strong crowd is an amazing effort.

Brett: Hero hammer Sylvaneth with the those 3. You really don’t want a piece of any of them although I believe there is a thought that Durthu hasn’t benefitted from the new battletome. And there is a sneaky Battlemage of Ghur. This is a strong move giving you a decent chance of a 7″ charge for a teleporting unit. I’ll let you work out the details but it’s a great way to move some revenants into danger close quickly.

The power of the list is concentrated in the heros, and mostly Aliarelle, with the Tome they have 6 casts and unbinds available. Alarielle is almost half the army and the real trick to playing this army is knowing when to commit her. She is vunerable if she is focused by your opponent (and they can get to her) and while you can return her to the battle, that’s not reliable before Turn 3or even 4. Loose her on Turn 1 and it’s going to be very hard. On top of her spell casting though she has your highest quality attacks as well so when to throw her into combat is a mini game in itself.

Durthu offers early turn combat strength if you want and can help screen Aliarelle. The Greenwood Gladius awards D3 extra attacks, potentially near a Awakened Wood Durthu will have 7, 6 damage -2 rend attacks. He can also whiff terriably. The Warsong Revenant is also decent at combat, can use a mortal wound spell and buffs bravery of Tree Revenants or Dryads making her clutch at times. Surprisely survivable with a 4+ ward. Tree Revenants with the extra wound are a reasonable battleline unit but they melt to ranged attacks or mortal wounds. With only a 5+ save and bravery of 6 they really need support to shine.

A defensive army the new battletome makes them much more viable. The new terrain rules help their fire and fade shenanigans and make them much more flexible and mobile. Brett: Peter chooses the focus list and Peter plays Kruleboyz. Surprise another Kruleboyz list. The army focuses on their best warscrolls, their heroes and the Boltboyz. Choosing Grinning Blades is a good move with this many Boltboyz, they aren’t battleline so aren’t Galletian Veterans. They don’t have good saves so the extra damage will clear them really quickly. Grinning Blades also means they aren’t visible more than 12″ away. As we’ve seen with Idoneth this is surprisely powerful, ranged units need to get within the threat range of the melee units.

Unfortunately both the battleline (Gutrippaz) and Boltboyz are really very soft with 5+ and 6+ saves. They melt under pressure, with only one Swampcalla it’s likely that only the reinforced Boltboyz had poison most of the time. Boltboyz need special mention – they do MW on 6s so you want to use Hasty Shot when you can. But you need to move (it can be 1″) and be within 12″ of the enemy. That means they are very exposed. Aimed shot is only available if they don’t move. If they are caught out of position or without screens they are very vunerable. And finally their small unit size (3) limits the effectiveness of Unleash Hell.

The heroes in this army are the major source of combat capability. They mix reasonable quality attacks with interesting wars roll abilities. From being able spam commands to mortal wounds from their slime to snatch and grab there are a lot of things to track. Unfortunately this increases their cost. The snatchaboss or swampboss have a decent chance of one shotting small heroes. Still 14 wounds with a 4+ may struggle in sustained combat. In the end they fail the dps check which is known as the Sons of Behemet. All of this adds to an underperforming faction, unfortunately they are among the lowest on current stats. Going 3/0/2 is a great performance in a 70 strong field.

Slaves to Darkness and Blades of Khorne continue their run of good form in experienced hands. While the new battletomes of Nighthaunt and Sylvaneth can also be seen in the +55% area. Daughters of Khaine are smack in the middle with a perfect 50% win rate. While Skaven are beginning to climb.

Drowned Men continue to lead the way with a win rate of 69.1% despite Maggotkin overall only having a win rate of 53.8%. Nighthaunt and Scarlet Doom find themselves near the top now as predicted by Danny some weeks ago. Meanwhile at the bottom of the table Ossiarch Bonereapers/Petrifex Elite are the only subfaction below 30% win rate.

Interestingly Fyreslayers have Lofnir (6 PLayers) with a win rate of 51.7% and the more popular Greyfyrd (9 Players) at 35.2%, are people playing the wrong subfaction?

When you compare army share to the number of battletomes each Grand Alliance possess you can see that Order are overrepresented, while Chaos are vastly under represented:

I’ve highlighted all those faction win rates in red which are outside of the parameters that players have stated would make the game roughly balanced (45-55%).

I’m looking at the bottom of the table as I’m writing this, and its hard not to overlook Fyreslayers, Gloomspite Gitz and Ossiarch Bonereapers with win rates of less than 40%! Gloomspite Gitz are getting their new book this year, so hopefully we’ll see that improve. Fyreslayers have been mugged by Games Workshop rules writers, and it just shows how awful that book is. I feel for long term Fyreslayers players…

At the top of the table Beasts of Chaos now currently lead the way with a win rate of 67.1%! They’ve gone from trash tier to S tier in the space of 3 months. Slaves to Darkness are a bit of an anomaly at the top there, and this is primarily driven by a few high level players who vastly our performed the faction this month, much like Anthony Trentanelli did a few weeks ago with Skaven. Maggotkin of Nurgle and Seraphon win rates have both dropped, but its too early to tell why, as the new rules for Seraphon only really came into effect last week.

Maggotkin of Nurgle are a bit of a strange faction. While you have one of the meta leading Subfactions inside the tome with Drowned Men (68.0%, at the bottom of the pack you have Befouling Host (40.0%). It’s not an irregularity either as 7 players have played that subfaction and one claimed 5 wins at an event and another 5 losses. This suggests to me that while Drowned Men is a simple list to play, Befouling Host is completely the opposite and requires good memory and skill from the pilot.

After almost a year of publication now, both Stormcast and Orruk Warclan battletomes are beginning to show a little lag behind the other updated factions (apart from Fyreslayers of course). As the first of the Battletomes perhaps this has played into their stats slightly as the rules writers learn from their mistakes (apart from Fyreslayers of course) when writing the newer tomes.

Scarlet Doom shows that its the faction of choice for a reason in the new Nighthaunt battletome (60.0%) however, its still early days for this battletome and the other factions could be more complicated to pick up and play. However 60.0% win rate for any subfaction is too high and so they may need a future nerf at some point.

Going forwards as the weeks go on, I’ll be keeping an eye out for Grinin’ Blades beginning to get some more play with their updated allegiance abilities after not being placed at all due to all the Kruleboyz players choosing Big Yellers – this will change. I expect to see them nearing the 50% mark and above. Likewise with Skaven, I expect them to begin climbing the rankings as their new rules come into effect.

THE SUPRISE

I said I had a surprise, and here it is!

Woehammer will be doing a player ranking system for the new General’s Handbook based on the Elo system used by Chess.

Who gets ranked?

Everyone who takes part in a two day event using the General’s Handbook: Pitched Battles Season 1 2022-23. Each week I’ll update the scores of the players as they happen and post them in a separate rankings post which will be published every Saturday.

All players will begin with a rating of 1,000 at the beginning of the season, player ratings will be carried over into season 2 and beyond in the future.

I’ve included the current rankings below (there’s only been two GT’s using the new Handbook) which includes everyone at present. However, I will limit this to the top 20 as more players are ranked. The full downloadable player rankings will be available on the site to download next weekend.

Maggotkin of Nurgle top the charts this week in a very small data set. With a win rate of 66.0% Followed closely by Cities of Sigmar with a win rate of 58.6%. Seraphon, Fyreslayers and Soulblight Gravelords all struggling to make that magical 45% mark with Soulblight Gravelords being the only faction below 40%.

Subfaction Stats

Only Seraphon/Thunder Lizard and Maggotkin of Nurgle/Drowned Men made the requirement for this table (min 5 armies represented). Thunder Lizard managed a win rate of 43% while Drowned Men achieved 72.5%……

AoS Meta Stats (w/e 12th June 2022)

On Reddit Warhammer 40k has the Meta Mondays posted by the brilliant u/JCMS85 on r/WarhammerCompetitive. So why can’t we have one for AoS? Well we can….

Here are the stats for all the Grand Tournaments that have taken place between Monday 6th June and Sunday 12th June 2022. These are all the GT’s that I can locate on Tabletop.to or BestCoastPairing, if you know of any others please send me a link and I’ll add them.

There was a total of 10 Grand Tournaments last week, however only 9 had data available to analyse. Valleycon 2022 was a 26 player tournament but no lists were available at the time of publishing these stats.

Despite Nighthaunt and Daughters of Khaine being released now for a couple of weeks, we still see Seraphon, Legion of the First Prince and Maggotkin of Nurgle topping the win rates. On top of that Seraphon managed to grab three 5-0 results this week.

As a rough guide factions should have win rates of between 45-55% to ensure the game is roughly balance (true balance being impossible). The above shows that 7 factions have exceeded this band (including the new Daughters of Khaine) with Seraphon and Legion of the First Prince have exceeded the 60% win rate barrier. There are also seven factions below this ideal range, including one of the new battletomes for 3rd Edition (Fyreslayers). While Stormcast Eternals have a win rate of 45% we have to bear in mind that this is the most popular faction and is often the ones new players use when first playing Age of Sigmar, so the range of skill of the players inside this faction will vary widely, while many of the other faction will have a dedicated fan base or have tournament players looking for a faction that provides them the best chance at good results.

The faction stats are pretty much replicated above with Lumineth Realm-Lords/Zaitrec joining the +60% club this week. Meanwhile despite Anthony Trentanelli’s heroics with Skaven recently (claiming two GT’s and going 4-1 this week) they still sit below 45% with a miserable 37.9% win rate. Will their new battletome and the Generals Handbook see a change in this though? A new tome can’t come soon enough for Gloomspite Gitz and Ossiarch Bonereapers….
