Jiwan Noah Singh: The heroes all serve a function against different matchups, and with the Gavespawn ability, they can then serve a secondary function when they die.

The general has to be the Tzaangor Shaman to unlock Galletian Veterans for the big block, but also has the extremely helpful big cast once per game, and moves 16/19” if I need to go hold and up a huge threat. Mostly, I used the big cast for the bull spell, but in other matchups, I considered he would have used tendrils of atrophy to break armor stacking. His speed let’s him get there for that short ranged spell.

Grashrak gives out the +3 move, and because he can pass wounds, it is helpful against ranged threats who losing the move bonus would be difficult against. His spell is also a super combo with Gavespawn if I need to lift a gargant or something in one activation.

The shoggoth was there for his spell and having a starting monster, and the pre-phase move made anyone worried about that going off have to deploy really far back.

Beastlord was the newest addition but was a pretty fun vehicle for the gnarlblade. With run and charge, he moves 15” on an auto run, so throwing him across and 18” deployment means he can also make people worry about making me take top, for small only investment on my part. Additionally, if he got his attacks off and the bull was on something, it was a less likely but still redundant plus to wound, or hit and wound.

Gors are 10 potentially deepstriking bodies on a 4+ in combat for 70 points. They also have plus to run and pile in, which is so strange that it just confuses people when you tell them, but it is actually helpful.

Tzaangor are 60 wounds, have mortal banners, can zoom across the board and fight something with a billion attacks, but also rally on 4+. I generally deploy them in a cloud, all about 1” from each others bases, to maximize the board space, but also to be able to pull them out of 3” against things that shut down inspiring, and if I need to rally, recharge, ect. Let’s me save bodies if I pull them out of coherency too, which I did intentionally several times to be able to rally again.

The rest of the list is enlightened, in blocks of 6, in bounty hunters. These have tons of uses and can pump out massive damage. Turning off all our defense is like another rend in many cases. So with the fight last bull running around, some plus to hit (always try to end on damned if you can) from multiple sources, and the throwing an extra attack on them from a spawn, they are such a threat that an opponent must deal with them. When you stack a plus to hit, going second, and gavespawn attacks, I know of very few things with that output. And at 2/3 rend no cp, few things can eat it with saves.

The beasts summoning on top of all the threats to kill or hold things, and ability to run a hero into something, die, and lock them up, meant that in almost all my games I can lose tons of things and still keep taking points. I built in some tech to deal with specific matchups that concerned me, most of which didn’t happen, but in general it’s a 5 turn army with a ton of flexibility and lots of different things going on. Good proving ground usage was hugely helpful with the ability to summon Galletian Veterans, and the output meant the main armies I expected to see, Ogors, Gargants, Nurgle, Nighthaunt, all had something that was a big problem for them that I didn’t mind sacrificing.

That’s pretty much it.

That, and having distractingly beautiful hair, that helped too.

This list – piloted by Nicholas ‘Scooter’ Walters – is testament to the difference reps and familiarity with an army can make. Even if that army is considered underpowered.

Scooter nearly went all the way with what is a pretty common IJ list, with a sneaky ally in the shape of the Fungoid Shaman for the extra CP generation. I mean, it’s an ‘obvious’ list – but if you watch back the stream of Scooter playing Gavin Grigar’s Cities list for example, you can see the difference skill and knowing the intricacies – the limits, the averages – of your army can make. Keeping the Maw Krusha back until it’s absolutely needed – knowing when to smash that ‘Destroyer’ button on the foot boss – and making all the right calls with your pigs are all key to playing IJ well.

Even though the list will be hurt by losing bounty hunters, making the pigs half as effective, the inclusion of the Megaboss makes sense going into the new season – he’s a great, durable and fighty Galley champ. The speed and activation potential with smashing/bashing of the feral hogs will never go out of style.

Ironjaws might be suffering from a lack of units and power creep these days but Scooter is out here to prove that if you love your army, and you’re prepared to stick with it and get the reps in, ‘the meta’ be damned, you too can damn well near win LVO.

Kaleb Walters: My main goal was to create a Swiss Army Knife style list. Bring as many solutions to the answers in my faction as possible.

Reason For Family: Guild of Summoners: 1 FREE Battle Tactic: Summon Lord of Change. LOC have 14 wounds, -1 Rend shots, 18 inch range, movement 12, +1 To casting for all Tzeentch casters, -1 to hit naturally and monstrous rampage abilities. While other families have more flexibility, the norm is to summon Blue Horrors that have 20 wounds, Movement 5, shoot 12 inches at 0 rend but have good board presence.

List Design: Min Max: Minimum Battleline Maximum Hero’s/Monster Damage. My list is designed to castle up and react to the deployment of my opponent. By staying low drop I normally have the option to decide how I want to engage. I either sacrifice my Acolytes (120pt a unit) to an alpha strike list, or I position aggressively with a front and center incarnate primed to go wild and level up. Either formation still allows me to throw powerful spells that can turn off Command abilities and unleash a possible 15 mortal wounds at 27 inches or more. In addition, as the game goes on, I become more magically dominant with the additional LOC while reducing the overall strength of my opponent.

The next part of my list design is increasing/ reducing my opponents armor. I have 2 spells & 1 Endless spell that can reduce my opponents armor and with the rend stacking of the Acolytes or the LOC natural -1 Rend shots and of course the already powerful incarnate -2/-3 rend I am able to turn normal attacks into Mortal Wound equivalent attacks.

I also know the future with my lame sauce guaranteed Grand Strategy & Destiny Dice…….

Opportunities of The Design: I have a difficult time dealing with Hordes and / or armies that can summon cheap disposable models on a mission with more than 4 objectives. I also find it difficult to face armies like KO that can stay outside my threat range and then engage on their terms.

Core Concept
Bring guns… lots of guns. We recently had 2 books introduced into the meta (Ogors and Slaves to Darkness), and the resurgence of some old foes (Dragons, Ironjaws and Nurgle), that generate a ton of kill pressure and melee engagement on Turn 1. Tempest’s Eye combats this with great Turn 1 buffs (+1 Save/+3 Move) and efficient shooting (+1 Hit/+1 Wound) supplemented by a healthy number of mortal wounds (Hurricanum, Dracoth Breath). All these elements together are hopefully enough to keep even the scariest melee threats at bay.

Strengths
Shooting Volume from Crossbowmen, Tempestors and Arkanauts combined with force multipliers centering around the Hurricanum (+1 Hit/+1 Wound). Adaptable Tech from the Admiral (+1 Rend/Ward Removal/Charge Debuff). Drop Control (2 Drops) typically allows the list to immediately threaten a double turn and forces your opponent to make hard decisions on Turn 1.
Horrorghast allows the list to hit crucial damage break points against large units such as Tzaangors, Chosen, or Blood Sisters or spread damage across multiple units for greater efficiency.

Weaknesses
1 Drop armies or specifically being disconnected from the double turn, which forces the list to overextend and expose its firebase. Melee armies whose movement outranges the threat ranges of the list’s shooting units. Middling mobility limits the army’s ability to play proactively and aggressively.

Takeaways and Closing Thoughts
As fun as it was to throw buckets of dice, the list has some glaring weaknesses that I was able to mostly avoid due to some fortunate pairings over the course of the weekend, but it does have undeniable strengths and when the list wins it really wins. Enjoy responsibly!

TOTAL POINTS: 2000/2000

Cody Saults: Ironjawz, for me, was the only choice for LVO this year. My standard approach to tournaments is to not play the same game everyone else is expecting to play. With GV being a thing, and folks running bounty hunters, 2 drops kept me tied or out dropping every opponent, and with the list’s raw damage potential, it has the potential to cripple opponents before they get a chance to interact with your units. Second consideration, with a tournament with as many rounds as LVO potentially has for those who do well, avoiding burnout is key. The list only has 4 unit profiles, which helps with keeping rules front of mind and always knowing your options.

The Maw Crusher is an absolute engine for this list, as Skull-Shaking Bellow allows you to spread Mighty Destroyers out to multiple targets, which helps with board control and damage potential. Its melee profiles allow it to put out a punishing amount of wounds, while its solid armor save prevents it from being an easy removal target. Moreover, it has several ways to help clear screens to make sure you get to your target. Its shooting attack is only 4 potential wounds at rend 1, and very short range, but combine that with the impact hits from the pigs, and enhanced stomp monstrous action, the crusher stands a very good chance of clearing screens and getting to the target it truly wants. A quick Finest Hour passing to your opponent’s turn, with an All Out Defense means that even after they deal their damage, they will continue to gum up the works for your opponent, while taking a monstrous amount of extra attention to move. Having 2 allows for redundancy, protect the one in the most vulnerable position, and then respond with the second. The mighty destroyers move means they are never out of position, as if they clear targets and need to pivot to another flank, they almost always have the movement to get there.

Gore Gruntas also represent a solid damage investment, as buffed by the Warchanta, and under the Iron Jaws WAAGH, there is very little in the game they can’t chew through. I went with two units of three, and one of six. The 2 three-man units can take buffs and present good screen clearance in matchups where the opponent has good screening, and for matchups you don’t need the initial sacrificial salvo, they can be used for fast objective grabbing, or counter skirmishing. The post-combat movement abilities from Bloodtoofs also allow for re-establishing screens or locking up units safely.

Warchantas are a must in any IJ list, as they can pass out solid damage bonuses to units about to be in combat, give out charge bonuses, and even heal a key couple of wounds. They have a surprising amount of beef for small characters, and receiving their own buffs can dish it right back.

The last inclusion in the list was shootas, an easy inclusion to give me some cheap screens. Shootas in 20 man squads can be strung out to prevent enemy outflank or deep strike, and the nets, positioned well, can punish an opponent for under-committing resources to remove them or what they are near.

All in all, the list was tailored with so much mobility and relatively low drops to force an opponent to play defensively. This works out either way for us, as the number of hard to remove wounds makes sure they stay in their deployment zone while we grind down their units. Every unit in the army punches up, able to drag down more costly targets, with the post combat mobility to shift our positions, removing the need to choose between damage and objectives.

All in all, the list performed well. The meta we had until the GHB transition had a lot of lists with hard DPS checks, and this list put out enough damage to meet that need and then some.

It’s the ‘other’ BoC list from LVO! As you can see, it damn near went as far as Noah’s, losing only to Scooter’s incredibly well piloted IJ list.

It’s a relatively normal archetype – with the usual 3 HQs for their wide variety of utility – the Dragon Ogor Shaggoth especially proving critical due to his incredible warscroll spell (heal d3 to a Dragon Ogor and give them re-roll wounds) and the Dragon Ogor scroll allowing re-rolls of 1s while near him.

A mix of Ungors for super cheap and speedy (+3″ thanks to the Bray Shama) trading pieces (once the rend starts stacking) and the more out-of-the-box Dragon Ogors make up the battleline – offering speed, punch, and plenty of board control.

Beyond that, it’s basically ‘the spindog’ syndrome. 6 Enlightened on Discs also provide an absolute missile – if you read any of these, you know by now they’re an absolute staple of BoC lists.

The body count, speed, and Spinedog allow Rigolet to care less about dictating first, and so he packs in bounty hunters plus a warlord for additional utility. A savage list that will operate very differently (and be like, double the cost) with the new book – but there you have it!

Nate Trentanelli: The list began as a bit of a joke to include two famously “bad” units in the Black Coach and the Craventhrone Guard- or “Crossboos” as they’ve come to be known by. I decided that I couldn’t possibly take Top Nighthaunt in the ITC this season without ever having actually played these units. Not wanting to have no chance during games, I peppered in some more useful units in the Hexwraiths and the Krulghast- staples of Nighthaunt armies.

I’ve gone for an Arcane Tome Knight of Shrouds here for one reason. With his Command Trait “Spiteful Spirit”, when he takes damage in the Combat phase he will roll a number of dice equal to his wounds characteristic and do a mortal wound to all enemy units within 6” for each 4+ he rolls. Quite the useful little bomb. To make things even better, Arcane Tome makes him a wizard, allowing him to be moved by Lauchon. Almost guaranteeing a turn 1 charge wherever I want to maximize his chances of doing mortal wounds. Reikenor with his +3 to cast will almost guarantee Lauchon goes off.

Hexwraiths do what hexwraiths do – nearly unmatched speed to pin opponents in their deployment zones. With 4 units of them, I can either overload my opponent turn 1 with all 20, or simply move block them turn after turn. It may lose me all my hexwraiths, but I’ve functionally disallowed my opponent from actually scoring any objective points.

2 units of Chainrasp exist solely for 2 battle tactics. Start them in the underworld and bring them down on a turn. You don’t have a good battle tactic option. Put both in your opponents deployment zone for an easy Barge Through Their Lines with a bonus for 2 GVs. The next turn take Desecrate Their Lands for another Battle Tactic. 2 complete for no effort.

The unit of Craventhrone Guard I also put in the underworld. Though their damage output is poor, it is something Nighthaunt don’t really have access to anywhere else – shooting. Even that small amount of extra damage is noticeable and useful. They are also a great distraction piece, and the Spectral Bolts ability to shoot through terrain is better than it seems. I know, I know. It’s Crossboos. Trust me. They will work.

Last is the Black Coach. It really is the AoS equivalent to a tank. It’s base size makes it terrific at blocking key areas. With the Craventhrone Guard shooting it’s actually quite easy to power it up as well. Allowing you to shoot with the Craventhrone Guard first, slay 5 models from a screen, and fire the Black Coach into the thing you really wanted to shoot for 3D3 mortal wounds. Alternatively, keeping it on its 4+ ward makes it truly crazy at tanking. Keeping it in the Krulghast bubble also gives it -1 damage for even more craziness. It’s shocking how survivable it is.

The Mortalis Terminexus gives you the flexibility to heal your heroes and Black Coach or use it more as I did, which is an aggressive mortal wound bomb. 26” total threat range from casting is great, and it can pump out quite a bit of chip damage.

All together, the armies Battle Traits of Ethereal and Wave of Terror combine to make even the weakest looking unit truly scary. Roll enough 8s on the charge, and even Kragnos will fall to simple chainrasp. The army has 5 different units that do D3 mortals on a 2+ on the charge. Don’t underestimate how much that is. Simple averages tell you that’s about 8 mortal wounds. Which, by the way, you can retreat and do all over again every turn.

Because of the movement of this army- Hexwraiths, Lauchon heroes, Black Coach teleports, and Underworld Reserves – you can be anywhere and everywhere. Movement wins games, and it’s no surprise to me that most of my opponents had issues with catching me. Even if it they were close, you can simply use one unit to block for the rest to move to safety. Keep your units alive until the exact moment your opponent is out of position. And then pounce all at once. Be careful not to allow your opponent to single out units and be careful. You don’t pull your units away from each others support. Aggressive movement with supporting units will win you games.

Happy haunting!

Camaron has my thanks (but not quite my sword) for not taking any Ironblasters! What he’s taken instead is loads of big, angry cows! It’s almost a completely pure Beastclaw Raider army – love to see it.

This list essentially asks ‘can you handle 5 cows swamping you’, and the answer was ‘no’ for everyone other than Kaleb’s Tzeentch, who were able to puncture those super tough hides with his sneaky magic MW output.

Enhancement wise – which is where the tactics are in a list like this – you’ve got Metalcruncher on the Frostlord for dealing with tanky 3+ saves, along with Touched by Everwinter to make him into a priest and able to cast the excellent MW AoE ‘Pulverising Hailstorm’. The Huskard gets the Rockmane Elder (-1 to wound in melee).

A pack of Gnoblars act as a cheap add-on screen that still fits into the battle reg – crucial for a pressure list like this – in order to dictate first and almost certainly give it away every time to make an absolutely devastating round of turn 2 charges and a hopeful end-it-there double.

Big gratz to Camaron for losing only in the shadow round to a legendary player and a bad match-up.

Head Judge – Thomas

Acting as Head Judge at LVO 2023 was a thrilling experience. I should begin by thanking both Front Line Gaming, and Scott Reed, the Head TO, for organizing such an amazing event.

LVO 2023 was the largest Age of Sigmar tournament in the world, by far, and 50% larger than previous LVOs. Whilst being involved in such a large event was a great experience, the logistics of organizing 325 players did throw up some challenges.
To start, the release of the Battlescroll with new points one week before the list deadline (and after our rules cut-off) was a bit disruptive. We had to ensure that every player knew that we would be using the new points, and yet we still had quite a few lists submitted with the old points. Equally, we had to ensure that every player knew that we would not be using the new GHB, which was released the day after lists were due (and one week after rules cutoff). Of course, there were still a few players who submitted lists assuming the new GHB (comically enough, there was one player who we could not contact until round 1 to let them know that their Aspect of the Champion and Sharpshooter battalion had to go!).

The rest of the pre-event organization was handled by FLG and Scott, so my preparations beforehand were minimal. But I have been involved with the running of 36 events in the past 18 months and know that quite of bit of prep work is involved.

Due to the large number of players, LVO did not use the standard AoS GT format of 5 rounds. Instead, we used 5 rounds followed by a 3rd day of single elimination rounds for top 8 players. This year, 9 players went 5-0 which required us to run a Shadow Round 6th game for the players in 8th and 9th place to determine which of them would advance to Day 3.

The first five rounds were pretty straight forward from a rules judging point of view. The pack used at LVO, produced by Scott Reed, borrowed from the OTTD Generic Pack, which is something I was heavily involved in creating. Many of the players at LVO already have experience attending events that use the OTTD system, which helped keep rules and scoring questions to a minimum. When tricky questions did arise, I was able to fall back to the aosfaq.com website and team to provide answers.

The pressure as Head Judge only really started during the Shadow Round, which was the first round where we introduced active judging (where a judge watches the entire game and points out rules mistakes before and whilst they are made). Unfortunately, the game was a bit of a one-sided blowout – the choice to use Mighty and Cunning proved problematic when one player had essentially all GV and the other essentially none. Lesson learned! The only rules issue that cropped up was when one of the players declared Desecrate their Lands on a Defensible terrain piece. I had to remind him that you can only control Defensible terrain pieces by garrisoning them – the standard 3” rule does not apply. He was able to declare another terrain piece instead.

Day 3 was where the real excitement as Head Judge began, which entailed three rounds of active judging among the best players in the world. I was fortunate enough that James O’Brien who was a contender, had not made it to day 3, but as an experienced TO and judge was willing to jump in and judge half of the games.

When judging the final 8 of a 325-player event, there is really very little stress. These are fantastic players with a huge amount of experience and, more importantly, great sportsmanship. There was no confrontation to deal with, and all players played with intent at all times, meaning there were no disagreements to intervene with. If anything, I had to prevent players from giving too much benefit to their opponents!

Instead, the rule of table judging was just handling the occasional line-of-sight judging, pointing out often forgotten rules such as you need to jump into a garrison to control it (even the top players didn’t know that rule!) and mostly sitting back and watching some fantastic Warhammer being played.
The biggest drama, up until the end of the final game, that is, was during the first round, when one of the games ended in a complete tie. With single elimination, a tie is not an option. It was also not something we had prepared for. Fortunately, the two players were able to agree that under any tie-break rules, there would be a clear winner.
Of course, I couldn’t end without talking about that final game. What a game! I could watch both Noah and Scooter play Warhammer all day. Scooter is one of the great personalities to watch, and Noah is a fantastic human being. And their game was so close.

I suppose I should talk about the ending… By the end of the final game, the players had been through 3 days of extensive Warhammer. All with the backdrop of Las Vegas. I think it is fair to say that both players (and Judge) were drained. The game came down to control of an objective. Noah had a chaos spawn on it, Scooter had a goblin shaman. They fought in combat, but neither could kill the other (Scooter made the 4+ ward save to keep his Shaman alive on one wound – much to the crowd’s delight!). It was a great moment!

Of course, the spawn has 5 wounds, and so is worth 2 points on an objective, and the Shaman only has 4 wounds, so it is worth 1. But we were all too exhausted to notice. Noah assumed the Shaman was worth 2. Scooter assumed the spawn was worth 1 and I failed to notice the mistake (oh so easy to assume all heroes in the game are going to be 5 wounds or more!). That meant that they were tied on points, and Scooter won the match on battle tactics scored. It wasn’t until a few minutes later that we caught the mistake – where we had not considered that the Shaman was only 4 wounds (a friend texted me – thank you!).
The way both players handled the turnaround in decision is a credit to them both. The level of joy each felt at the other being declared the winner was heartwarming.

The final, and LVO in general, left no doubt that Age of Sigmar has a fantastic community. And I am proud to be part of it.

Danny: Freddie Leggett has a point to prove – and that point is ‘nerf Beasts’. The man even admitted himself after this event – his 3rd 5-0 with BoC in the self-proclaimed ‘Cygor meta’ – and far as we know, his wish is about to be granted… but in the meantime, you gotta take your hat off to the guy for running quite so rampant.

Beasts have a few things going for them. Not least of which is sheer numbers and efficiency. Dragon Ogors are just a brutally good hammer for their points – and in true 2nd edition fashion the Shaggoth allows them to re-roll 1s to hit, making their high volume of attacks uber reliable.

Ungors are fairly bad, but at 65 pts they’re one of the cheapest screens/battleline taxes going – they also make excellent Herdstone fodder, meaning a cheap way to rack up plenty of summoning points. Whereas Bestigors and Centigors fill out the niches of speed and slow good quality of attacks on a 4+ respectively.

The techy-cherry on top of this swarm is the two monsters, who each gain a unique monstrous action. The Cygor can try for an endless spell dispel – and if successful heal itself equal to the roll, making itself particularly tanky in this spell heavy meta. Whereas the Jabber can worsen the save of an enemy hero by 1 on a 2-5 or 2 on a 6 until the following combat phase – meaning even rend 1 weapons can utterly melt a priority target. Meanwhile the Mindstealer Sphiranx has a good chance of making something fight last.

It’s all tied together by the just all round great enhancements of Gavespawn. No one thing is particularly frightening on its own but the combined offensive weight and significant numbers of summoned models just tend to utterly overwhelm and establish massive board presence.

Good point, well made Freddie – time to put BoC out to pasture!

Danny: With leaks of the new tome flooding the interwebs and the current Tome languishing at the bottom of the win-rate pile, Toby Meadows drops this bombshell on us – a 2nd place Archaon list! To be fair, it’s not a huge deviation from pretty much the only viable Slaves build at the moment.

Archaon is a big, tanky-ass utility provider, who is himself supported by the two lords for more buffs than you can shake a stick at. His role is usually as a super hard to shift distraction carnifex who can roll smaller units, making him a tricky tactical proposition. Meanwhile, 2 squads of Tzeentch marked Varanguard – meaning they’re re-rolling 1s to save on a nat 3+, and doing +1 damage in the 6th circle – act as twin hammers. 3 squads of super-bargain Iron Golems work on the board and objective control game – they hit more like pillow golems, but they’re a super cheap source of wounds on a 4+ with a natural +1 if they didn’t move.

And that cheeky kitty shows up again for the fight last shenanigans!

Big kudos to Toby as this list, while strong, is definitely suffering from being behind the times overall and takes a great degree of tactical acumen to pilot well. Losing only to the insane volume of attacks and bodies of 1st place Freddie is a great achievement.

Ok i’ll throw you a bone if you’re not familiar with Seraphon lists – Slann provides magical domination, the Bastiladons can be buffed to re-roll 1s, have +1 to hit and do additional mortals on 6s. If the Engine manages to get Curse off on something (6s to hit do mws) and the Sun is nearby to make each shot rend 2 – and in Thunder Lizards, one of them can use a command ability to firre twice…it’s gonna burn. Danny: So, FEC aren’t eating good these days – so 6th place is a big achievement and sure to score highly on our Woehammer scoring system. This is really a ‘ghouls for days’ list – each of those ghoul squads can come back on a 4+ … as many times as you like! They’re underwhelming in general but with bounty hunters can still bring the weight of dice pain, and if you roll well can represent a fairly overwhelming amount of board control over the game. Backed up by the King on ‘Gheist and his well known spike damage potential, plus a slightly less royal zombie dragon, it’s a classic ‘swamp and chomp’ (yes I just coined that term) list that must have scored fantastically to end 6th with 3-1-1.

Well done to Tom, and please, James Workshop, for the love of all that’s unholy give this faction some new models and rules.

Danny: A big win for Sylvaneth at a time they’ve still got something to prove on the competitive circuit! Some patterns are beginning to emerge for the evil trees – Warsong Revenant is rooted in place, and Skaeth’s Wild Hunt (a good value and mobile wizard+retinue with a tasty +1 to wound spell) have come out of retirement – if you can find them!

Zach here however eschews evilest single tree Durthu for 2x 6 Spiteriders, again slightly unusual given the tanky and self-healing Revenants were seeking the position of ‘meta bug cavalry’. It makes sense though – Spiterider Lancer’s 14″ movement and fight first on the charge allows for a devastating weight of rend 2 attacks. In Harvestboon they gain a 12″ pre-game move too, which is huge for establishing board control or setting up the alpha.

With the usual brace of Tree revs for teleport based scoring and the unfortunately ubiquitous Spinedog to pin stuff in place while the Warsong bombs you with MWs, this is a potent list that took down some very challenging armies en route to first. I think even with the Spinedog nerfed into oblivion (or, at least, a shallow hole) it’s still a capable core – kudos to Zach for leafing with gold!

TOTAL POINTS: (2000/2000)

Danny: Legion are enjoying a bit of a twilight resurgence since their nerf – although ‘rumour’ (i.e. leaks) have it that their current format will drastically change in the new year.

In the meantime, this is a still-excellent version of the army that employs the favoured combo of Kairos (for spellz!) a Bloodthirster (for many MWs in an 8″ aura on 6s!) and a Daemon Prince – who until the new Slaves book is still rocking Blood Slick Ground for that really quite sweet halves-charges aura. Flesh hounds provide great value screening and utility – their free unbind/dispel attempt is an added bonus – aaaaaaaaand of course there’s a Krondspine for even more of that sweet, sweet control.

You may also notice there’s no Be’lakor in this list – I guess he’s learned to delegate? Taking down DoT, Nurgle, NH and the board control of SBGL is no mean feat so big up to Matt for this swan song – this list is not long for this world.

Danny: These successful Sylvaneth lists are sprouting up everywhere eh? And this one brings big ol’ thunder thighs herself! She’s backed up by the obviously strong combo of 2×3 Kurnoth bows backed up by Arch-Rev for +1 to wound even to their shooting – and in Heartwood they’ll also be naturally at +1 to hit three chosen targets meaning you don’t lose out by splitting the squads as AoA isn’t necessary. A big blob of Scythes absolutely blend and survive most attacks before getting a model or two back from Rally or the Verdurous Harmony spell.

That’s it really – a hugely tough and killy Kurnoth core escorting Alarielle for all sorts of spell casting and utility, screening and turning terrain into Overgrown for teleporting shenanigans. I’m happy to see a list with her in do well as, personally I think they did her scroll dirty but she deserves to be seen on top tables.

Danny: Those plucky Kruleboyz! Sitting pretty in the bottom 3 of win-rates, going 4-1 – meaning it was actually in a tournament winning position – and losing only to Sylvaneth who an army like this just can’t really interact with at all is really impressive and cool to see.

James here opts not to use the recently buffed Grinnin’ Blades to go all in (ish) on Boltboyz in Big Yellerz – bringing a big blob of 9 which really should punch through an awful lot of targets in the game. They’re commanded by no less than Gobsprakk himself – an ever-controversial pick who can nevertheless play mind games with enemy casters and generally fly around issuing double-commands to stuff and casting from the actually great Kboyz lore.

Wonderfully, he’s joined by the humble Killaboss on FOOT (not to mention his trust stab-grot, the real MVP of any list) – presumably a budget way to access All Part of Da Plan – to essentially make the 2x 20 blobs of Gutrippaz immune to battleshock. The shaman and Sludgeraker round off the ‘fishing for 5s/6s’ synergy package, with the latter rocking Egomaniak (essentially turning the hobgrotz into ablative bodyguard wards) making it super durable, with Arcane Tome and Sneaky Miasma for casting a hero-phase move on himself.

It’s a lovely list that can put out an eye-watering number of MWs up close and actually packs some real board control chops. It’s got overlapping synergies and plenty of movement options, and about as much durability as Kboyz can manage. Real big up to James for coming so close – can’t wait to see what he does with the faction after the Battlescroll!

P.s. according to the new Woehammer scoring metrics that take army win-rate into account, this was the winning list of the event!

Danny: Darren Watson is a beast, unbeaten in 15 games and 3 GTs. He brought his DoK out for the HUGE London GT, opting for a relatively close to the chest but clearly brutally effective list centered around a double reinforced blob of stab sneks and the Spinedog.

The piece you don’t usually see at tournies these days is the Hag Queen on Cauldron. It’s a great piece full of utility – the Avatar riding shotgun is plenty killy and the Queen offers a prayer and separate ability to bump something up the Blood Rites table – meaning two units can go up 1, or you can double down on one unit…such as giving the 15 sneks +1 to hit and wound from BR 2. Better yet, it projects a +1 save aura and acts as the tankiest platform available to DoK for the Zealous Orator (4+ rally) trait. Arcane Tome obvs completes the combo, allowing something in the army to benefit from the Krondspine’s +1 – which makes getting Mindrazor – a completely devastating spell to get off (or not, as it’s CV 8) on stabbers – so getting it down to a 7 is potentially game changing.

It will be interesting to see if this list survives the rumoured incoming Spinedog nerfs. Either way, it’s a powerful archetype, clearly able to take down the sheer volume of bodies BoC can field (twice!) and the movement and MW output of Fangs of Sotek. A huge tournament to win for Darren and the snek-ladies.

Danny: Flies, and Be’lakor to probably shut down your one key piece with any hope of dealing with them. One of my club-mates faced Hadrien in the first round as KO, with predictable results – however he did say that Hadrien was frustratingly lovely and skilled as an opponent.

Flies were called out in the recent Metawatch article with good reason, and will clearly see nerfs soon – it will be interesting to see if they go as far as touching the Drowned Men pre-game move too. Either way, this exact list is probably not long for this world, with good reason – it’s completely oppressive and very, very few lists have any kind of answer to it.

Still, credit to Hadrien for 2nd at such a big event and for being a great competitor and a gentleman while he crushed dreams.

Danny: KO have gone from zeroes to heroes after a steady trickle of FAQs and generic enhancement tweaks have meant they can play the ‘3rd edition’ game properly now.

With an extreme paucity of unit types to choose from, there’s only so much flex and variations on the theme of ‘FLYING GUNS’ KO can manage, but this one doubles down on the Ironclad – the biggest, most flying of guns possible. One is endowed with The Last Word, allowing for double unleash hell – which is generally a good way to avoid there being a combat phase at all – while the other has installed the Dealbreaker Ram, allowing for a roll of dice equal to the charge roll, with 4+ doing a mortal. An amusing contrast of tactical roles – one you don’t want to get busy with, the other wants to charge in to finish off a weakened unit with a clutch of mortals.

Beyond that, there’s one very interesting piece of tech in the list. Usually, the Spell in a Bottle (a free cast of an endless spell that can’t be unbound) is stuffed full of Purple Sun for the extra rend (which, given KO are a majority rend 1 army, they love) or the warp lightning vortex – yep, ‘Any endless spell can be chosen (all restrictions are ignored)’. But Stephen has opted for the LRL endless spell ‘Rune of Petrification’ which has a 6″ aura of mortals on a 4+ and -1/-1 from run and charge rolls – presumably a handy way to slow down threats and cause key charges to fail, so the double-Ironclads can go to work from a safe range.

With some big wins against tough opponents, Stephen rightly takes 3rd, further cementing KO as back in the gunning (I mean, running) for a spot in the A tier of armies.

Danny: We’ve talked before about how Soullblight are enjoying a resurgence – and while they’re not quite cracked the podium recently, in London or otherwise, they’re creeping closer. James here was in winning position – losing only to the eventual winner, which set him down the table a fair way.

He’s opted for a nice balanced list of tech – the ever-popular Mannfred for utility and teleporting/move blocking shenanigans, with some cheap supporting heroes behind a big blob of skellies and two units of our favourite, undead fluffy friends, the Dire Wolves.

Skellies are often run MSU as cheap chaff who can pop back out of a gravesite – but the blob of 30, combined with their ability to bring back models that have died in the same phase on a 4+, before they attack – can make them truly resilient objective grabbers. Think you’ve killed 25? Well, on average 12 of them are coming back and now the unit counts for 51 on the objective again! No doubt this unit was supported with the corpse cart, projecting a -1 to wound aura, making them a bony nightmare to chew through.

Elsewhere of note is the DOUBLE Graveguard brick – 2 units of 20 – that would be putting out silly damage when supported by one or both the foot heroes.

Two big hammers, one giant anvil, some furry fast objective grabbers and screens – it’s a quality list and 10th feels like a harsh result when it came so close to winning the whole thing – big congrats to James!

Danny: Nurgle take gold in Germany with an off-meta (for Nurgle, anyway) Filthbringer list, eschewing Drowned Men and the pre-game move for the Rotbringer Coven and their really quite impressive magical prowess. Multiple excellent spells on durable platforms with a combined +3 to cast/unbind can compete with all but the very best casters in the game, and with Nurgle’s excellent lore full of debuffs and longer-range disease point delivery systems, they shore up the slowness and lack of range the army typically has.

Of note elsewhere is a reinforced Blightking blob to gum up the mid-table, and the 2x 2 Blightlords for mobility – not that they don’t also slap. For those looking at the odd-at-first-sight Endless Spell list, and who haven’t learned the hard way, the way it works is this: Shards halve the movement of something, count as an additional way of putting out disease points, and then Gnashing Jaws chomps through – dealing the difference between a 3d6 roll and a unit’s movement as MWs – hence Shards. Nasty combo and a big win, especially as Colin had to chew through double Seraphon, Tzeentch (whose mortals typically threaten Nurgle tankiness), the hyper-mobile Sylvaneth and scary ol’ Nighthaunt!

Peter: We’re lucky enough that Colin is a member of our Discord. I asked him what he thought the vulnerability of the list was and how opponents should approach playing it.

Colin: I don’t think there is really much counter potential for this list. Of course, you can try to split the list, then I could get into trouble because I don’t have many units. The wizards are of course important for my list, but I have made the experience that the list remains super stable even if I lose my wizards.

Most people focus on the 10-strong squad of Blightkings, but that’s the wrong approach for me. The opponent should rather focus on the other smaller units. Alone, 10 Blightkings with a 4″ move do nothing on most battleplans.

Danny: Fangs of Sotek again! In their defence, the FAQ to turn scaly skin off skinks has meant the Starborne sub-factions are worth taking again, which is good for diversity overall, even if how good Seraphon are in general is a wider issue.

Tristan’s take on the teleporting skink gang is fairly standard – he’s got the 30 blob there, the 2x 10 objective grabbers, and the shooty core of 2x 2 sallies (nasty with the option to teleport) and the Solar Engine which, combined with Purp Son is putting out 9 rend 2, damage 2 (3 vs chaos – and Colin’s Nurgle still beat him!) shots at long range.

It’s an incredibly solid list archetype that I doubt we’ll see much deviation from in a while, but big up to Tristan for keeping up the concentration over a long tourney against some tough opponents and armies!

Danny: An interesting IDK list that drops a few common pieces in favour of a Spinedog and an Eidolon, who may not be as slap-happy as the King, but do offer a huge amount of utility and versatility. Overall though, it looks like a pin-and-cushion list – 20 Reavers can rain down serious hurt on whatever the Spinedog ties up, while the lone shark caps objectives and the two Thrall blobs – who can certainly pack a punch once the Eidolon gets the -1 save debuff off on folks and/or the inevitable Sun gets into range.

The Soulscryer in Briomdar completes the game plan by offering a few units the chance to start in reserves to threaten early board control or objective yoinking – the Enclave allowing for an extra unit to go into reserves and for them to come in outside the table edge too. The list performed admirably, losing only to Seraphon and taking down some meta-factions en route to 3rd- congrats Stephan!

Danny: Fyreslayers infamously don’t have a huge roster to work with, and they seem to have settled largely into either Magmadroth spam or Hearthguard spam, for obvious reasons. But Jan here is not content to follow the pack, and has opted instead for…Vulkite spam! The little guys that could don’t set the world on fyre at first glance, but their combined weight of attacks and relative durability can make for serious board control. Two Flamekeepers no doubt hung out nearby, absorbing the power of all their little fallen breathren before multiplying the power of the rest, allowing for a steady trickle of combos and shenanigans – such as the powerful combat-phase charge.

A fun, unusual list that managed 4 wins, showing it clearly has (lots of little) legs!

Danny: Hazel Moon is fast gaining a reputation as being the UK’s premier IDK player, and this result shows why. To beat Fangs of Sotek – quickly becoming the meta Seraphon sub-fac – along with grindy SBGL and tanky SCE, you need a balanced list and plenty of talent.

The fulcrum of the list is 30 reavers, who still represent some of the best value for points ranged power in the game, backed up by an Eel blob and 2 braces of Allopexes. It’s nothing out there, but threat project, mobility and the reliable mixed phase threats of the Allopexes just make sense. The leaders are minimalist – a slam-King and the Soulscryer for utility, wrapped up in the relatively uncommon Ionrach enclave, which affords the King huge tactical flexibility in choosing an additional tide to be in effect.

In this season, being 3 drops also allows choice of 1st plenty of the time too – meaning all the tools were there for an army that relies on rapidly adapting to threats and board states to triumph. Congrats to Hazel for a big win!

Danny: Next in the list of ‘quickly becoming UK best in faction’ is Matt Gouldesbrough and his beautiful Lumineth, putting them on a tear while they wait…oh so very patiently…for their new book.

And he’s rocking Teclis! The big man is an expensive bet in this age of objective play and ranged threat, but the magical dominance he offers can never be underestimated. This list is clearly geared towards utterly control, with the standard 30 sentinel blob trying to point-and-delete the main threats, allowing the two warden units to go cap objectives – and their survivability with the ward Teclis offers and their potential to be doing mortals on 5s to hit – should never be underestimated.

Not much else of note beyond a great performance whose only non-win was against Hazel’s IDK – meaning Matt was super close to taking the gold – and the new Enlightener cropping up for additional magic overload and a cheap platform for Goading Arrogance for the few occasions something might get too close to Teclis for comfort. Well done to Matt for an undefeated campaign.

Many of them in Expert Conqs, and In Fangs of Sotek meaning a turn 1 speed boost for the little guys helping them set up shop on objectives and move block, and crucially the ability to retreat after an Unleash Hell on a 4+. Sure this is good for keeping them alive, but factor in how frustrating this list could be to score battle tactics against without ranged threat projection.

If you haven’t played this kind of list before, the main gotcha is the way skinks can have plenty of buffs stacked on them by the Star/priest – including RR 1s to hit (not long for this world), and 6s to wound do mortals. Above 15 models in a unit and skinks have 2 shots, meaning the 30 blobs are putting out 60 shots at mid-range. The maths on that are already good, but notice the Engine of the Gods has the Curse prayer – if that goes off on a big target, allowing for 6s to hit doing mortals….and you essentially have a guaranteed deletion of almost any target in the game.

Understandably however, this list seems to have suffered against the speed and ranged output of Hazel and Matt’s list, who I presume were able to snipe the buff pieces, and whittle down the skink blobs with plenty of shooting. Well done to Jack either way.

Despite his utility and magic potential, the guy is surprisingly non-tanky these days, having a pitiful ward and a short range on most of his abilities. You’re almost forced into filling out the rest of a Nagash list with MSU pieces, and Josh has here opted for the pesky Deathrattles and the usual 20 GG blob as a pure hammer. Deathrattle are quickly gaining in popularity due to their cost effectiveness and potential ability to pop back out of a grave-site after being killed and yoink vacant objectives – especially in Expert Conqs.

Josh lost only to 1st and 2nd place, so big props for a great result with Nagash.

Danny: It’s Morathi and the Bow Snakes! Backed up by 10 and 5 Blood Sisters and Shadowstalkers and a unit of Heartrenders, for teleporting objective/scoring plays. Simple, but effective – and a 3 drop means it’ll still have a good chance of dictating turn order. Shadowstalkers, despite their nerf in the new book, are becoming increasingly common – probably because, while Heartrenders are great for dropping down and being a nuisance, Shadowstalkers ability to teleport _every_ turn makes them that more flexible, and their 11 wounds on a 4+ makes them able to take a hit, whether while scoring or as an emergency snek-screen.

This list understandably beat Kboyz, Skaven, Sons and Khorne, but Fangs of Sotek probably confounded the stab sneks and could handle Morathi with plenty of ranged chip damage.

TOTAL: 1990/2000

Danny: Legion of Night is a relatively off-meta pick for Soulblight these days, so it’s nice to see it being picked alongside Mannfred, which is thematically appropriate, and doing well with an unusual list.

The aforementioned Manny is a familiar sight and an excellent all-round utility piece. But he’s rarely backed up by _30_ Deathrattle, who everyone said were too fragile against bounty hunters to reinforce, and have thus been typically run in msu given their cheap, cheap cost of 80 pts making them a cost-effective screen. Deathrattle can bring back models on a 4+ when they activate though – so having a unit big enough to take a hit and activate 2nd means there’s a good chance they regen plenty before the end of the phase – combo that with Expert Conqs and unless you super-commit and wipe the entire squad (30 wounds on a 4+ with AoD, with a ward of 6 re-rolling 1s, and quite possibly some debuffs such as -1 to wound from the corpse cart) – you can see how it might be tricky to steal an objective off them.

The next unusual element of this list is not Graveguard, as they’re a standard hammer, but simply taking two bricks of them. And why not? They’re so good! Going lighter on Blood Knights (just the token 5, you’d be mad not to take any) frees up the points needed, and now there are two scary blobs, either/both of which can be buffed to Shyish and back by the Necromancer, vampire lord AND Manny’s CA (+1 hit and wound).

A nice spin on things that performed brilliantly, losing only to Khorne, who might have their weaknesses, but do not count ‘a shit load of attacks and 6″ pile ins’ among them.

Danny: Big Waagh are now one of the least represented factions at tournament level, and I can see why – first book of the edition syndrome (I know it was a twin with Stormcast, but one twin is always technically born first…) and their meta-lists have a high skill floor. So it’s great to see them hanging on in there.

This list represents what is looking like the way to go with Big Waagh for this season – msu ‘Ardboyz. They’ve always been a cost-effective package, and while vulnerable to Bounty Hunters, enough of them in msu format still asks some hard questions of your opponent in terms of target priority.

They’re backed up here by the seemingly entrenched HQ combo, although spicily, Thomas here also throws in a Wardokk with the ‘fight last’ spell as an additional tech piece – something the Wurrgog also has access to but rarely uses given his laser-eyes are so clutch.

Now for the elephant in the room. Or should I say, the Gutrippaz in the bin. Yes, this list takes a unit of Gutrippaz. With no support. Why? Let’s ask Thomas. Someone, please ask Thomas. The only thing I can think of is that they’re in Expert Conquerors as a way to count as 30 and, y’know, if their janky ability goes off -1 to hit against 20 wounds isn’t too bad. I guess?

Either way, congrats for a clutch place in the top 5 with an odd duck of a list that took down some difficult match ups!

Woehammer International TTS Tournament – Round 1

The first round has been drawn. Unfortunately there have been two drop outs since the draw, no matter! It leaves an opportunity for an exhibition match!

Alice Lirette v Kieron Bailey

For those who aren’t aware, Alice is a writer for Goonhammer. Alice went to the BWG: Summer Slaughter and claimed two wins and three losses, but that was with Ossiarch Bonereapers – a faction in desperate need of an update.

This time around Alice is playing as Daughters of Khaine with Morathi and a Krondspine forming the backbone of her list.

Kieron joined Woehammer last month and is in competition with Mike Chadderton (also of Goonhammer fame) to see who can get to 5-0 with Kruleboyz first.

Peter: A one drop list will mean that Alice will be choosing who goes first in the first battle round, my guess being that she would allow Kieron to take the first and hope to have the double going into turn 2.

You may write-off the Kruleboyz at first glance, but they have a lot of screening that can be use to block the Krondspine and Morathi. Meanwhile the Man-skewers can pick wounds off at range.

Danny: I would say Alice has two options depending on how Kieron deploys – Morathi/s + Krondspine can potentially make a T1 charge, no shooting needed if Kboyz deploy and screen well, it would make sense to let them go first as moving will reduce the Boltboyz range and make her charges easier.

For Kieron it will be absolutely key to deploy in such a wayas to either bait the T1 charge and start doing those wounds to Morathi from chip damage/UH, because Kboyz can melt fast to her if he doesn’t keep her tied up with stuff. If Kieron gets given first first he will want to keep turtled up, do what he can to get on objectives and force Alice to split up to start scoring – getting those 3 wounds on Morathi every damn turn either way will be crucial.

Danny: DoK weren’t bad before their 3e book by any means, but they’d settled into a ‘Morathi and the (15) bow sneks’ rut. It took a short while for the dust to settle after their new tome, but they’re now starting to go 5-0 and win tournaments here and there – and, thankfully – with a variety of lists.

Although, to be fair, this one didn’t get the memo. The double reinforced bow snek still does the business, with Wendel opting for a Krondspine to double up with Morathi as super durable objective bullies/screens – in the ‘Spine’s case, the pinning effect will help the bow-blob safe while they rain down hurt, and the 2 units of witch aelves run around scoring. Or – because this list opts for Khailebron – teleport around.

I call this the ‘pin and pun-cushion’ strategy.

Danny: Love that this list took a thematic route through the tournament, crusading successfully against the forces of chaos and death – only losing out to a ‘friendly’ scrap against a rival Stormhost.

This list probably qualifies as ‘shootcast’, packing in 6 Longstrikes – despite the recent FAQ stripping reinforced units of the double shoot – and a unit of Judicators. That’s backed up with a Protector blob, who absolutely slap, but are slow. This static, slow core is counterbalanced by Scions of Storm and a chariot, plus the Relictor whose teleport is still clutch to allow for mobility and objective play. And in this season, where Expert Conqs. are often at the mercy of Bounty Hunters, Liberators with +1 save from the Castellant provide a super durable, objective-stealing and mission playing battleline.

A considered list that clearly plays well into the current season and meta.

Danny: Nighthaunt have not so far been the shrieking, impossible horror that some predicted, but they’re definitely an army you have to have a plan for now.

With the -1 damage aura from the Krulghast combined with ethereal (NH saves can’t be modified -/+), plus their targeted +1 to ward saves, they’re surprisingly tanky for a bunch of spooky sheets. Throw a Krondspine into the mix, all wrapped up in a battle regiment, factor in the NH army trait to re-set up a few units in deployment and you have a tight package that is highly reactive to the mission and opponent – all crucial tools for success at the moment.

The rest of the core units are general NH goodstuff – Hexwraiths for mobility and mw impact hits, Banshees for shutting down magic and the mostly-usual 20 blob of Grimghasts for an eye-watering number of rend 1 attacks and objective thievery, and you have yourself a truly spoopy list.

Peter: I love lists like this, six different units rather than finding the most efficient and spamming it.

James has gone for Stabbas rather than Shootas for his battleline as there a little more durable than their shooting counterparts with a +1 save while having more than 10 models. They’re cheap and make perfect blocking units, gumming up the board in vital locations.

The Squig herd puts out a reasonable amount of damage with 20 squigs able to produce an average damage output of 13.2 before saves. On top of that when squigs are removed they’ll cause mortals on 4+ to the nearest unit.

The Squig Hoppers (Squig Cavalry) cause mortal wounds to models they hop over as well as having the damage output similar to the Herd. These move at 3D6 and so could potentially have a threat range of 30″! The Loonboss has been included to remove the randomness of this movement however, giving the Hoppers a flat 12″ move while within range of the Loonboss.

Meanwhile the rockgut Troggoths can soak up damage with their 5+ ward save and regeneration in the hero phase.

Skragrott is a 2 cast and unbind character with +1 to his casting attempts.

Unfortunately, where Gitz fall down is in their lack of synergy between units meaning most units are pretty much independent most of the time. Hopefully this will change with their new book. Either way, this is a fun little army that looks great to play with and against. Almost makes me want to play Gitz…

Danny: The list is entirely built around maximum threat projection from Kroak. I imagine the Spellportal is for turn 1 spell spam while the Oracle and Krondspine get into position, the former to pin threats while the latter grabs objectives and acts as a mobile Spellportal.

16″ with the Astrolith bearer from wherever the Spell-portal or Oracle is – assuming Kroak is sitting pretty next to the portal – might end up with the option of pumping at his 3x scroll spell anywhere that’s meaningful on the board.

Having the Krondspine bound to the Oracle also gives it a better chance of getting Portal set up T1 for Kroak to spam through so he doesn’t have to use up one of his.

TOTAL POINTS: 1990/2000

Danny: Running the Krondspine with Morathi is a riff on the Gotrek combo in that it gives a usually super fragile faction two big utility hammers that are also super-anvils.

Krondspine lacks Gotrek’s pure combat prowess but offers DoK a rare source of a bonus to cast and, more crucially, a way to pin or block key threats to their squishy core of blood sisters/stalkers. In this case, it’s bound to a Gladiatrix – their cheapest hero – with a Tome, meaning it just snakes in under the points limit.

The rest – a 15 blob of double shooting sneks with zealous orator to keep them coming back – is standard fare now, but no less effective for it. The only loss coming from Nurgle suggests a lack of scoring potential or pure damage ceiling – but either way a great result with a streamlined list.

Danny: Until the last set of FAQs, KO were struggling in a meta that rewarded save-stacking and objective play – for the obvious reasons they don’t have access to much rend or objective play. But the Purple Sun changes everything, given they can auto-cast it from Spell in a Bottle. Turns out giving access to an additional pip of rend to an army that revolves entirely around ranged threat projection changes the script.

The Celestant-Prime proves a perennial and valuable ally, offering a targeted, bankable melee scalpel thanks to his auto-charge out of reserves.

All told, KO are having a proper renaissance – even though they’re still badly in need of their _actual_ book being brought in line with 3e, it’s great to see generals finding creative workarounds and getting some serious results in the meantime.

Peter: I chose an Ogors list today as we don’t see too many of these. Frostlords and Huskards always hit like a tonne of bricks causing on average 16.2 damage before saves! Boulderhead gives the big boys an extra wound and a mount trait for every Stonehorn or Thundertusk.

It’s a quick army with the slowest units moving 9″ a turn, and with high wounds and high saves all round it’s surprisingly durable as well.

They’ll want to get in your face as quickly as they can to take advantage of their high damage outputs.
