Top Three AoS Lists for the London GT

This is the Top Three AoS Lists for the London GT that took place in the UK on 1st and 2nd October. It involved 76 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5 game tournament.

Danny: Darren Watson is a beast, unbeaten in 15 games and 3 GTs. He brought his DoK out for the HUGE London GT, opting for a relatively close to the chest but clearly brutally effective list centered around a double reinforced blob of stab sneks and the Spinedog.

The piece you don’t usually see at tournies these days is the Hag Queen on Cauldron. It’s a great piece full of utility – the Avatar riding shotgun is plenty killy and the Queen offers a prayer and separate ability to bump something up the Blood Rites table – meaning two units can go up 1, or you can double down on one unit…such as giving the 15 sneks +1 to hit and wound from BR 2. Better yet, it projects a +1 save aura and acts as the tankiest platform available to DoK for the Zealous Orator (4+ rally) trait. Arcane Tome obvs completes the combo, allowing something in the army to benefit from the Krondspine’s +1 – which makes getting Mindrazor – a completely devastating spell to get off (or not, as it’s CV 8) on stabbers – so getting it down to a 7 is potentially game changing.

It will be interesting to see if this list survives the rumoured incoming Spinedog nerfs. Either way, it’s a powerful archetype, clearly able to take down the sheer volume of bodies BoC can field (twice!) and the movement and MW output of Fangs of Sotek. A huge tournament to win for Darren and the snek-ladies.

Danny: Flies, and Be’lakor to probably shut down your one key piece with any hope of dealing with them. One of my club-mates faced Hadrien in the first round as KO, with predictable results – however he did say that Hadrien was frustratingly lovely and skilled as an opponent.

Flies were called out in the recent Metawatch article with good reason, and will clearly see nerfs soon – it will be interesting to see if they go as far as touching the Drowned Men pre-game move too. Either way, this exact list is probably not long for this world, with good reason – it’s completely oppressive and very, very few lists have any kind of answer to it.

Still, credit to Hadrien for 2nd at such a big event and for being a great competitor and a gentleman while he crushed dreams.

Danny: KO have gone from zeroes to heroes after a steady trickle of FAQs and generic enhancement tweaks have meant they can play the ‘3rd edition’ game properly now.

With an extreme paucity of unit types to choose from, there’s only so much flex and variations on the theme of ‘FLYING GUNS’ KO can manage, but this one doubles down on the Ironclad – the biggest, most flying of guns possible. One is endowed with The Last Word, allowing for double unleash hell – which is generally a good way to avoid there being a combat phase at all – while the other has installed the Dealbreaker Ram, allowing for a roll of dice equal to the charge roll, with 4+ doing a mortal. An amusing contrast of tactical roles – one you don’t want to get busy with, the other wants to charge in to finish off a weakened unit with a clutch of mortals.

Beyond that, there’s one very interesting piece of tech in the list. Usually, the Spell in a Bottle (a free cast of an endless spell that can’t be unbound) is stuffed full of Purple Sun for the extra rend (which, given KO are a majority rend 1 army, they love) or the warp lightning vortex – yep, ‘Any endless spell can be chosen (all restrictions are ignored)’. But Stephen has opted for the LRL endless spell ‘Rune of Petrification’ which has a 6″ aura of mortals on a 4+ and -1/-1 from run and charge rolls – presumably a handy way to slow down threats and cause key charges to fail, so the double-Ironclads can go to work from a safe range.

With some big wins against tough opponents, Stephen rightly takes 3rd, further cementing KO as back in the gunning (I mean, running) for a spot in the A tier of armies.

Danny: We’ve talked before about how Soullblight are enjoying a resurgence – and while they’re not quite cracked the podium recently, in London or otherwise, they’re creeping closer. James here was in winning position – losing only to the eventual winner, which set him down the table a fair way.

He’s opted for a nice balanced list of tech – the ever-popular Mannfred for utility and teleporting/move blocking shenanigans, with some cheap supporting heroes behind a big blob of skellies and two units of our favourite, undead fluffy friends, the Dire Wolves.

Skellies are often run MSU as cheap chaff who can pop back out of a gravesite – but the blob of 30, combined with their ability to bring back models that have died in the same phase on a 4+, before they attack – can make them truly resilient objective grabbers. Think you’ve killed 25? Well, on average 12 of them are coming back and now the unit counts for 51 on the objective again! No doubt this unit was supported with the corpse cart, projecting a -1 to wound aura, making them a bony nightmare to chew through.

Elsewhere of note is the DOUBLE Graveguard brick – 2 units of 20 – that would be putting out silly damage when supported by one or both the foot heroes.

Two big hammers, one giant anvil, some furry fast objective grabbers and screens – it’s a quality list and 10th feels like a harsh result when it came so close to winning the whole thing – big congrats to James!

Danny: Nurgle take gold in Germany with an off-meta (for Nurgle, anyway) Filthbringer list, eschewing Drowned Men and the pre-game move for the Rotbringer Coven and their really quite impressive magical prowess. Multiple excellent spells on durable platforms with a combined +3 to cast/unbind can compete with all but the very best casters in the game, and with Nurgle’s excellent lore full of debuffs and longer-range disease point delivery systems, they shore up the slowness and lack of range the army typically has.

Of note elsewhere is a reinforced Blightking blob to gum up the mid-table, and the 2x 2 Blightlords for mobility – not that they don’t also slap. For those looking at the odd-at-first-sight Endless Spell list, and who haven’t learned the hard way, the way it works is this: Shards halve the movement of something, count as an additional way of putting out disease points, and then Gnashing Jaws chomps through – dealing the difference between a 3d6 roll and a unit’s movement as MWs – hence Shards. Nasty combo and a big win, especially as Colin had to chew through double Seraphon, Tzeentch (whose mortals typically threaten Nurgle tankiness), the hyper-mobile Sylvaneth and scary ol’ Nighthaunt!

Peter: We’re lucky enough that Colin is a member of our Discord. I asked him what he thought the vulnerability of the list was and how opponents should approach playing it.

Colin: I don’t think there is really much counter potential for this list. Of course, you can try to split the list, then I could get into trouble because I don’t have many units. The wizards are of course important for my list, but I have made the experience that the list remains super stable even if I lose my wizards.

Most people focus on the 10-strong squad of Blightkings, but that’s the wrong approach for me. The opponent should rather focus on the other smaller units. Alone, 10 Blightkings with a 4″ move do nothing on most battleplans.

Danny: Fangs of Sotek again! In their defence, the FAQ to turn scaly skin off skinks has meant the Starborne sub-factions are worth taking again, which is good for diversity overall, even if how good Seraphon are in general is a wider issue.

Tristan’s take on the teleporting skink gang is fairly standard – he’s got the 30 blob there, the 2x 10 objective grabbers, and the shooty core of 2x 2 sallies (nasty with the option to teleport) and the Solar Engine which, combined with Purp Son is putting out 9 rend 2, damage 2 (3 vs chaos – and Colin’s Nurgle still beat him!) shots at long range.

It’s an incredibly solid list archetype that I doubt we’ll see much deviation from in a while, but big up to Tristan for keeping up the concentration over a long tourney against some tough opponents and armies!

Danny: An interesting IDK list that drops a few common pieces in favour of a Spinedog and an Eidolon, who may not be as slap-happy as the King, but do offer a huge amount of utility and versatility. Overall though, it looks like a pin-and-cushion list – 20 Reavers can rain down serious hurt on whatever the Spinedog ties up, while the lone shark caps objectives and the two Thrall blobs – who can certainly pack a punch once the Eidolon gets the -1 save debuff off on folks and/or the inevitable Sun gets into range.

The Soulscryer in Briomdar completes the game plan by offering a few units the chance to start in reserves to threaten early board control or objective yoinking – the Enclave allowing for an extra unit to go into reserves and for them to come in outside the table edge too. The list performed admirably, losing only to Seraphon and taking down some meta-factions en route to 3rd- congrats Stephan!

Danny: Fyreslayers infamously don’t have a huge roster to work with, and they seem to have settled largely into either Magmadroth spam or Hearthguard spam, for obvious reasons. But Jan here is not content to follow the pack, and has opted instead for…Vulkite spam! The little guys that could don’t set the world on fyre at first glance, but their combined weight of attacks and relative durability can make for serious board control. Two Flamekeepers no doubt hung out nearby, absorbing the power of all their little fallen breathren before multiplying the power of the rest, allowing for a steady trickle of combos and shenanigans – such as the powerful combat-phase charge.

A fun, unusual list that managed 4 wins, showing it clearly has (lots of little) legs!

Danny: Hazel Moon is fast gaining a reputation as being the UK’s premier IDK player, and this result shows why. To beat Fangs of Sotek – quickly becoming the meta Seraphon sub-fac – along with grindy SBGL and tanky SCE, you need a balanced list and plenty of talent.

The fulcrum of the list is 30 reavers, who still represent some of the best value for points ranged power in the game, backed up by an Eel blob and 2 braces of Allopexes. It’s nothing out there, but threat project, mobility and the reliable mixed phase threats of the Allopexes just make sense. The leaders are minimalist – a slam-King and the Soulscryer for utility, wrapped up in the relatively uncommon Ionrach enclave, which affords the King huge tactical flexibility in choosing an additional tide to be in effect.

In this season, being 3 drops also allows choice of 1st plenty of the time too – meaning all the tools were there for an army that relies on rapidly adapting to threats and board states to triumph. Congrats to Hazel for a big win!

Danny: Next in the list of ‘quickly becoming UK best in faction’ is Matt Gouldesbrough and his beautiful Lumineth, putting them on a tear while they wait…oh so very patiently…for their new book.

And he’s rocking Teclis! The big man is an expensive bet in this age of objective play and ranged threat, but the magical dominance he offers can never be underestimated. This list is clearly geared towards utterly control, with the standard 30 sentinel blob trying to point-and-delete the main threats, allowing the two warden units to go cap objectives – and their survivability with the ward Teclis offers and their potential to be doing mortals on 5s to hit – should never be underestimated.

Not much else of note beyond a great performance whose only non-win was against Hazel’s IDK – meaning Matt was super close to taking the gold – and the new Enlightener cropping up for additional magic overload and a cheap platform for Goading Arrogance for the few occasions something might get too close to Teclis for comfort. Well done to Matt for an undefeated campaign.

Many of them in Expert Conqs, and In Fangs of Sotek meaning a turn 1 speed boost for the little guys helping them set up shop on objectives and move block, and crucially the ability to retreat after an Unleash Hell on a 4+. Sure this is good for keeping them alive, but factor in how frustrating this list could be to score battle tactics against without ranged threat projection.

If you haven’t played this kind of list before, the main gotcha is the way skinks can have plenty of buffs stacked on them by the Star/priest – including RR 1s to hit (not long for this world), and 6s to wound do mortals. Above 15 models in a unit and skinks have 2 shots, meaning the 30 blobs are putting out 60 shots at mid-range. The maths on that are already good, but notice the Engine of the Gods has the Curse prayer – if that goes off on a big target, allowing for 6s to hit doing mortals….and you essentially have a guaranteed deletion of almost any target in the game.

Understandably however, this list seems to have suffered against the speed and ranged output of Hazel and Matt’s list, who I presume were able to snipe the buff pieces, and whittle down the skink blobs with plenty of shooting. Well done to Jack either way.

Danny: Despite a very shaky start to the season, SBGL seem to be picking up the pace a bit these days, so 4th is a great result for Josh. _Especially_ as he done brought the big bone daddy, Nagash. Despite his utility and magic potential, the guy is surprisingly non-tanky these days, having a pitiful ward and a short range on most of his abilities. You’re almost forced into filling out the rest of a Nagash list with MSU pieces, and Josh has here opted for the pesky Deathrattles and the usual 20 GG blob as a pure hammer. Deathrattle are quickly gaining in popularity due to their cost effectiveness and potential ability to pop back out of a grave-site after being killed and yoink vacant objectives – especially in Expert Conqs.

Josh lost only to 1st and 2nd place, so big props for a great result with Nagash.

Top Three AoS Lists for Dice & Ducks: Decimation

This is the Top Three AoS Lists for Dice and Ducks: Decimation that took place in the UK on 27th and 28th August. It involved 16 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5 game tournament.

Peter: There is a theory among some at Woehammer that the Sons are (despite appearances) going to be the leading faction going forwards. Not only that, but that this is the list that will lead the way.

With a Krondspine attached the a kraken the opponent is going to have to seriously consider where they want to focus their attention. Either way they go, they’ll be struggling to cope with the opposite side of that coin. Two Mega-Gargant with additional thanks to flaming weapons and another that has an easier time thanks to the vial of Manticore venom.

It’ll be interesting to see how often this list starts to crop up.

Danny: It’s Morathi and the Bow Snakes! Backed up by 10 and 5 Blood Sisters and Shadowstalkers and a unit of Heartrenders, for teleporting objective/scoring plays. Simple, but effective – and a 3 drop means it’ll still have a good chance of dictating turn order. Shadowstalkers, despite their nerf in the new book, are becoming increasingly common – probably because, while Heartrenders are great for dropping down and being a nuisance, Shadowstalkers ability to teleport _every_ turn makes them that more flexible, and their 11 wounds on a 4+ makes them able to take a hit, whether while scoring or as an emergency snek-screen.

This list understandably beat Kboyz, Skaven, Sons and Khorne, but Fangs of Sotek probably confounded the stab sneks and could handle Morathi with plenty of ranged chip damage.

Danny: Legion of Night is a relatively off-meta pick for Soulblight these days, so it’s nice to see it being picked alongside Mannfred, which is thematically appropriate, and doing well with an unusual list.

The aforementioned Manny is a familiar sight and an excellent all-round utility piece. But he’s rarely backed up by _30_ Deathrattle, who everyone said were too fragile against bounty hunters to reinforce, and have thus been typically run in msu given their cheap, cheap cost of 80 pts making them a cost-effective screen. Deathrattle can bring back models on a 4+ when they activate though – so having a unit big enough to take a hit and activate 2nd means there’s a good chance they regen plenty before the end of the phase – combo that with Expert Conqs and unless you super-commit and wipe the entire squad (30 wounds on a 4+ with AoD, with a ward of 6 re-rolling 1s, and quite possibly some debuffs such as -1 to wound from the corpse cart) – you can see how it might be tricky to steal an objective off them.

The next unusual element of this list is not Graveguard, as they’re a standard hammer, but simply taking two bricks of them. And why not? They’re so good! Going lighter on Blood Knights (just the token 5, you’d be mad not to take any) frees up the points needed, and now there are two scary blobs, either/both of which can be buffed to Shyish and back by the Necromancer, vampire lord AND Manny’s CA (+1 hit and wound).

A nice spin on things that performed brilliantly, losing only to Khorne, who might have their weaknesses, but do not count ‘a shit load of attacks and 6″ pile ins’ among them.

Danny: Big Waagh are now one of the least represented factions at tournament level, and I can see why – first book of the edition syndrome (I know it was a twin with Stormcast, but one twin is always technically born first…) and their meta-lists have a high skill floor. So it’s great to see them hanging on in there.

This list represents what is looking like the way to go with Big Waagh for this season – msu ‘Ardboyz. They’ve always been a cost-effective package, and while vulnerable to Bounty Hunters, enough of them in msu format still asks some hard questions of your opponent in terms of target priority.

They’re backed up here by the seemingly entrenched HQ combo, although spicily, Thomas here also throws in a Wardokk with the ‘fight last’ spell as an additional tech piece – something the Wurrgog also has access to but rarely uses given his laser-eyes are so clutch.

Now for the elephant in the room. Or should I say, the Gutrippaz in the bin. Yes, this list takes a unit of Gutrippaz. With no support. Why? Let’s ask Thomas. Someone, please ask Thomas. The only thing I can think of is that they’re in Expert Conquerors as a way to count as 30 and, y’know, if their janky ability goes off -1 to hit against 20 wounds isn’t too bad. I guess?

Either way, congrats for a clutch place in the top 5 with an odd duck of a list that took down some difficult match ups!

Woehammer International TTS Tournament – Round 1

The first round has been drawn. Unfortunately there have been two drop outs since the draw, no matter! It leaves an opportunity for an exhibition match!

Alice Lirette v Kieron Bailey

For those who aren’t aware, Alice is a writer for Goonhammer. Alice went to the BWG: Summer Slaughter and claimed two wins and three losses, but that was with Ossiarch Bonereapers – a faction in desperate need of an update.

This time around Alice is playing as Daughters of Khaine with Morathi and a Krondspine forming the backbone of her list.

Kieron joined Woehammer last month and is in competition with Mike Chadderton (also of Goonhammer fame) to see who can get to 5-0 with Kruleboyz first.

Peter: A one drop list will mean that Alice will be choosing who goes first in the first battle round, my guess being that she would allow Kieron to take the first and hope to have the double going into turn 2.

You may write-off the Kruleboyz at first glance, but they have a lot of screening that can be use to block the Krondspine and Morathi. Meanwhile the Man-skewers can pick wounds off at range.

Danny: I would say Alice has two options depending on how Kieron deploys – Morathi/s + Krondspine can potentially make a T1 charge, no shooting needed if Kboyz deploy and screen well, it would make sense to let them go first as moving will reduce the Boltboyz range and make her charges easier.

For Kieron it will be absolutely key to deploy in such a wayas to either bait the T1 charge and start doing those wounds to Morathi from chip damage/UH, because Kboyz can melt fast to her if he doesn’t keep her tied up with stuff. If Kieron gets given first first he will want to keep turtled up, do what he can to get on objectives and force Alice to split up to start scoring – getting those 3 wounds on Morathi every damn turn either way will be crucial.

Danny: DoK weren’t bad before their 3e book by any means, but they’d settled into a ‘Morathi and the (15) bow sneks’ rut. It took a short while for the dust to settle after their new tome, but they’re now starting to go 5-0 and win tournaments here and there – and, thankfully – with a variety of lists.

Although, to be fair, this one didn’t get the memo. The double reinforced bow snek still does the business, with Wendel opting for a Krondspine to double up with Morathi as super durable objective bullies/screens – in the ‘Spine’s case, the pinning effect will help the bow-blob safe while they rain down hurt, and the 2 units of witch aelves run around scoring. Or – because this list opts for Khailebron – teleport around.

I call this the ‘pin and pun-cushion’ strategy.

Danny: Love that this list took a thematic route through the tournament, crusading successfully against the forces of chaos and death – only losing out to a ‘friendly’ scrap against a rival Stormhost.

This list probably qualifies as ‘shootcast’, packing in 6 Longstrikes – despite the recent FAQ stripping reinforced units of the double shoot – and a unit of Judicators. That’s backed up with a Protector blob, who absolutely slap, but are slow. This static, slow core is counterbalanced by Scions of Storm and a chariot, plus the Relictor whose teleport is still clutch to allow for mobility and objective play. And in this season, where Expert Conqs. are often at the mercy of Bounty Hunters, Liberators with +1 save from the Castellant provide a super durable, objective-stealing and mission playing battleline.

A considered list that clearly plays well into the current season and meta.

Danny: Nighthaunt have not so far been the shrieking, impossible horror that some predicted, but they’re definitely an army you have to have a plan for now.

With the -1 damage aura from the Krulghast combined with ethereal (NH saves can’t be modified -/+), plus their targeted +1 to ward saves, they’re surprisingly tanky for a bunch of spooky sheets. Throw a Krondspine into the mix, all wrapped up in a battle regiment, factor in the NH army trait to re-set up a few units in deployment and you have a tight package that is highly reactive to the mission and opponent – all crucial tools for success at the moment.

The rest of the core units are general NH goodstuff – Hexwraiths for mobility and mw impact hits, Banshees for shutting down magic and the mostly-usual 20 blob of Grimghasts for an eye-watering number of rend 1 attacks and objective thievery, and you have yourself a truly spoopy list.

Peter: I love lists like this, six different units rather than finding the most efficient and spamming it.

James has gone for Stabbas rather than Shootas for his battleline as there a little more durable than their shooting counterparts with a +1 save while having more than 10 models. They’re cheap and make perfect blocking units, gumming up the board in vital locations.

The Squig herd puts out a reasonable amount of damage with 20 squigs able to produce an average damage output of 13.2 before saves. On top of that when squigs are removed they’ll cause mortals on 4+ to the nearest unit.

The Squig Hoppers (Squig Cavalry) cause mortal wounds to models they hop over as well as having the damage output similar to the Herd. These move at 3D6 and so could potentially have a threat range of 30″! The Loonboss has been included to remove the randomness of this movement however, giving the Hoppers a flat 12″ move while within range of the Loonboss.

Meanwhile the rockgut Troggoths can soak up damage with their 5+ ward save and regeneration in the hero phase.

Skragrott is a 2 cast and unbind character with +1 to his casting attempts.

Unfortunately, where Gitz fall down is in their lack of synergy between units meaning most units are pretty much independent most of the time. Hopefully this will change with their new book. Either way, this is a fun little army that looks great to play with and against. Almost makes me want to play Gitz…

This is the Top Three AoS Lists for TURNAJ O NÁČELNÍKA OPIČÍCH HOR that took place in the Czech Republic on 13th and 14th July. It involved 24 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5 game tournament.

Danny: The list is entirely built around maximum threat projection from Kroak. I imagine the Spellportal is for turn 1 spell spam while the Oracle and Krondspine get into position, the former to pin threats while the latter grabs objectives and acts as a mobile Spellportal.

16″ with the Astrolith bearer from wherever the Spell-portal or Oracle is – assuming Kroak is sitting pretty next to the portal – might end up with the option of pumping at his 3x scroll spell anywhere that’s meaningful on the board.

Having the Krondspine bound to the Oracle also gives it a better chance of getting Portal set up T1 for Kroak to spam through so he doesn’t have to use up one of his.

Danny: Running the Krondspine with Morathi is a riff on the Gotrek combo in that it gives a usually super fragile faction two big utility hammers that are also super-anvils.

Krondspine lacks Gotrek’s pure combat prowess but offers DoK a rare source of a bonus to cast and, more crucially, a way to pin or block key threats to their squishy core of blood sisters/stalkers. In this case, it’s bound to a Gladiatrix – their cheapest hero – with a Tome, meaning it just snakes in under the points limit.

The rest – a 15 blob of double shooting sneks with zealous orator to keep them coming back – is standard fare now, but no less effective for it. The only loss coming from Nurgle suggests a lack of scoring potential or pure damage ceiling – but either way a great result with a streamlined list.

Danny: Until the last set of FAQs, KO were struggling in a meta that rewarded save-stacking and objective play – for the obvious reasons they don’t have access to much rend or objective play. But the Purple Sun changes everything, given they can auto-cast it from Spell in a Bottle. Turns out giving access to an additional pip of rend to an army that revolves entirely around ranged threat projection changes the script.

The Celestant-Prime proves a perennial and valuable ally, offering a targeted, bankable melee scalpel thanks to his auto-charge out of reserves.

All told, KO are having a proper renaissance – even though they’re still badly in need of their _actual_ book being brought in line with 3e, it’s great to see generals finding creative workarounds and getting some serious results in the meantime.

Peter: I chose an Ogors list today as we don’t see too many of these. Frostlords and Huskards always hit like a tonne of bricks causing on average 16.2 damage before saves! Boulderhead gives the big boys an extra wound and a mount trait for every Stonehorn or Thundertusk.

It’s a quick army with the slowest units moving 9″ a turn, and with high wounds and high saves all round it’s surprisingly durable as well.

They’ll want to get in your face as quickly as they can to take advantage of their high damage outputs.

This if the Top Three AoS Lists for the Battle of the God Kings took place in Bedfordshire, UK on 25th June. It involved 20 players vying to be crowned champion in a 3 game tournament.

This event was organised by our friends over at Savage Hammer Gaming, and I just want to thank them again for having me on the day, I had an absolute blast. Danny: Big Bois and Blightlords! Surely by now we’ve all seen (even if it’s just via this column) the menace that is fly spam, but this list – to its credit – at least tries to dial down the flying filth by filling its boots instead with the unholy trinity of giant demon riders. They all share a similar profile – variations on short range chip damage from range followed by 5, rend 2, damage 3 attacks from their pox maggoth and a variation on a good few rend 1, damage 2 attacks from the rider.

But each brings something more dramatic to the table. Bloab can debuff enemy units within 7″ on a 4+ with -1 to hit, greatly extending him and his hulking mates’ already legendary survivability. Morbidex takes that a step further by healing half his wounds in the battleshock phase – and Orghott gets to spend a free CP. So split them up or run them as a trident of stinking synergy – either way, it will look great on the table, moves away from fly spam – and is still, clearly, murderously effective.

Danny: Great to see Fyreslayers – who GW admitted in the latest FAQ were still underperforming by their standards – win against two of the best armies in the meta right now, proving with a good general, and perhaps a few lucky priority rolls, they can still punch above their…height.

They don’t have a huge amount of options to choose from, but this list has clearly strived for balance with not a token Magmadroth, and not spamming three – but two! That frees up points for one giant blob of poleaxe beserkers, which on average are better against tanky units because of their MW potential, which I imagine helped them in their Nurgle game. Fyreslayers have some truly excellent artifacts that offer loads of utility so the sub-faction that allows them to take extra makes a lot of sense – kudos to Jon for a great result!

Danny: Legion just took a heavy hit with the new Battle Scroll so I wonder how many more times in the near future I’ll have to write them up. In the meantime, this list has gone balanced, opting for a greater demon from each flavour apart from Nurgle, who traditionally don’t play offer as much outside of their army rules as the others. And then… lots of pinks! They gum up the board something special and live rent free in the head of almost anyone who has had to try and clear them off an objective. Well done to Ash for also taking Ws against the top two meta armies right now – and interesting it was New-haunt that kept him to a draw, presumably because of their ability to swarm onto objectives the pink usually locked down.

Danny: This list is wild. I’m guessing it’s using the old rules but either way – leaning into off-piste hero hammer, and then just trying to squeeze as many rats of both giant and really giant varieties onto the board is a hilarious and galaxy brain move. Bonus points for naming everything and their being a clear theme running through the list of mad mutant loving rat-lords and their poor old abominations. Sure, it might not be finely tuned and super competitive, but the spirit of both the Horned Rat and Warhammer in general is strong in this one.

Danny: Sons walk again! With Kragnos leading the charge – the 3d6 charge 12″ aura to be precise. Gatebreakers, if you haven’t been keeping up, are the really hitty ones. A ‘little’ Mancrusher fills out the points. If you’ve not played Sons before, they can be surprisingly whiffy – something Kragnos is most definitely not. And now, with the new GHB, they don’t even give up monster points – so I can see them doing even better than usual for quite some time…

Danny: Many of you will be aware that Dragons just lost their hero-phase move, and many of you will not be happy with it. But it was necessary to slow the roll of lists like this that could pretty much end the game inside of one battle round after their hero-phase move, double shoot from the Knight Draconis, almost guaranteed turn 1 charge and then murder from there. Hilariously, this one also allies in 20 skinks for a fast, cheap objective grabber. So there’s that!

Danny: Beasts of Chaos are just on a complete rampage after their Tome Celestial, and it’s not even just the one list they have! Dragon Ogors are definitely up there though, with a choice of three weapon loadouts for flexibility – this list has doubled down on the 2″, rend 1 flavour – re-rolling 1s to hit thanks to the Shaggoth heroes. Four Ghorgons that, from now on no longer give up points provide even more punch – for 155 they’re 14 wounds (albeit on a 5+) of fast ‘fishing for 6s to wound for d3 mws’ pain. Scary.

Danny: Khorne are now officially the worst Chaos faction, so 3-2 is definitely an achievement. That said, ‘worst’ is relative – three Boomthirsters and Skarbrand will still absolutely ruin your day unless you can either screen them out, trade very efficiently up against them or just snipe them from range. Did you know that Bloodthirsters of Insensate Rage do 4 mortals to EVERYTHING IN AN 8″ RADIUS if they roll a 6 to wound? It’s swingy given they only have 5 attacks but…you can see why the blood flows freely when they roll hot.

Danny: Nurgle nurgs as Nurgles does. That is to say, a giant slab of quivering filth – aka Great Unclean One – seems to be seeing more and more play recently. What he lacks in speed (and hygiene) he more than makes up for in tankiness and utility – in this list, with the Witherstave and flaming weapon he’s definitely specced towards sheer pain.

A standard smattering of buff Lords and then Beasts of Nurg spam make this effectively an MSU anvil list with one huge, waddling hammer. Nurgle aint going nowhere fast – metaphorically and figuratively.

Danny: I was wondering when nu-DoK would show up! Despite everyone hating on stab-sneks, this is one of the first splashes the new and improved book has really made. Zainthar Kai make sneks battleline and fight on death, and the Hag Queen on Cauldron is rocking the already iconic combo of ‘rally on a 4+’ and Crown of Woe which shuts down inspiring presence and rally in a 9″ aura, extendable to 14″ once the model itself kills something. It’s a bit of a shame in terms of internal balance that these two picks seem so pushed – you’d be kinda mad not to take Zealous Orator I think.

It does however go kinda light on sneks in favour of what I think we can now legit call a meta-terror, the Krondspine, which is basically another Morathi. So, three Morathis in a list give the normally fragile Daughters a lot of staying power to go along with the killing blows.

Danny: Cities, with added Krondspine, and 30 Irondrakes for loooooads of rend 1 decent shooting. And Freeguild Outriders for less good but much faster shooting. Cities lists like this are kind of interesting in that they never look that great on the surface – but between cost efficient battleline, massed firepower and a good pilot, they can clearly still perform. Until their new book finally gives the faction some actual limitations to have to work around.

Danny: Nu-spooks as Scarlet Doom, aka the ones who do loads of mortals when they charge you, are starting to creep up the tournament rankings as the sub-faction of choice. They’ve also gone for the one drop battle regiment to, I would imagine (albeit as a non-Nighthaunt expert) force the opponent to go first, setting up a turn 1 flurry of big charges, hoping to proc loads of charge mortals and pin everything in place thanks to their charge debuffs. There’s a lot of subtle synergy between heroes too, and I can see this being a really tough list to actually play the game against – kudos and Kurdoss!
