This is the Top Three AoS Lists for the Montreal Grand Tournament that took place in Montreal, Canada on 17th and 18th of September. It involved 47 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5 game tournament.

Declan: Danick went 5-0 here, with an interesting Seraphon list (interesting because no Bastiladons). That said it still has all the usual tricks. A good spell caster, 30 skinks to buff up, and get killing (and then another 30 so he can throw them away). If you’ve never seen a fully buffed up Skink unit you don’t know what you’re missing. As a Gitz player its demoralising but everything goes on them!

The purple Sun before the FAQ is an obvious call and no reason Danick shouldn’t take it. The Fangs of Sotek also gives the skinks a 50/50 parting shot (fire and flee), leaving the enemy flailing against thin air before they fire again. I’ve fought similar and it is vicious.

Declan: Also going 5-0 this is the often seen Pusgoyle Blightlord List. It’s very difficult to kill, has amazingly fast movement, and if you do catch a Pusgoyle on fly… it strikes back with a vengeance. Meanwhile the disease markers you aquire slowly bring down support heros, and just when you feel you’ve got a chance Christian can summon whatever he needs. You need mortal wounds, at range, and lots of luck to beat this. There’s a reason Nurgle have been top of tournaments (and a popular army) since the book was released.

Declan: Another good book, and another good army. Vincent-Pierre has brought the Purple Sun as well (surprise, surprise), and numerous ghosts. He has taken 30 Bladegheists so clearly has the patience of a saint (or bought them assembled), but once on the table top they are monsters. When they charge these guys can stack additional rend, so you’ll see characters charging in to clip units and doing untold damage. I’m still having nightmares of Kragnos being on 6+ armour save before the rend on the warscrolls took affect. It’s vicious, and has so far survived a FAQ – I’ll be amazed (although not surprised) if the stacking survives past Christmas.

Declan: Peter knew I was coming back to writing Top Three Lists, and has picked a classic… Raphael has brought Gloomspite Gitz to a full tournament and gone 3-2… what a hero! Okay, he has brought an Incarnate, but a 2019 book with no White Dwarf article needs you to think outside the book. With three wizards, three Endless Spells and no Hand of Gork (heresy) this is a sit and shoot list… with 60 shootas (5+/5+/-/1 … what a profile). The damage at range must have been enough, but I’m really impressed that Raphael managed to complete enough Battle Tactics to win 3 games – especially with his general being a simple Loonboss.

This is the Top Three AoS Lists for World tSports Champions that took place in Nottingham, USA on 2nd and 3rd July. It involved 16 players from the world over, vying to be crowned champion in a 5 game tournament.

The Top Three AoS Lists

Declan: Ronya qualified for the World Tsports Event by using Nighthaunt – exclusively – getting incredible results with what was considered to be a weaker army. So during Worlds she took the same army… but with a new book!

I watched the final of Ronya against Mike and she played very well, with the Nighthaunt now being great in the hands of an expert. I have played against the new book once, and it is very good. If you don’t kill whole units, they quickly come back, can retreat and charge and give debuffs on the charge – including -1 to hit, -1 save, and strike last. If you are charged by multiple units these really stack up quickly.

Nighthaunt still have their ward save as well, so if these spike you can fail to kill them… over attack and charge with everything!

Congratulations to Ronya, it was great watching her play with an army she’s used all year. I wonder if she’ll stick with them into GHB22 or take the opportunity to try something new.

Declan: Mike finished the season as the top ranked player with all 6 of his qualifying results coming as Seraphon with 4 5-0s! But for Worlds he’s pivoted effortless to IdK and did exceptionally well to qualify despite losing his first game in the group. Qualifying on tie-break for the top 4 bracket, he then beat Beasts before being beaten by Ronya’s Nighthaunt.

Mike has gone for a Battle Regiment to get 1 drop and chose who goes first or second, allowing him to set-up for a double turn or get an alpha-strike in. His army has a bit of everything including some shooting, striking first in the third turn, and an Akhelian King who is 40 points cheaper than a Loonboss on Mangler Squig — wow… what value!

IdK are not easy to play with as they are glass cannons, but they are very strong cannons – be careful of charging in turn 3! Well done to Mike as well, top ranked player in GHB21 and 2nd at Worlds. What a year for him.

Declan: Ah Beasts of Chaos – a perfect example of what can happen to a low ranked army if it gets a good white dwarf article / update. And Beasts did! Massive rend, good summoning, and lots and lots of Dragon Ogres! I watched Ole’s game against the Thunder Lizards on the Saturday and it was great to see how he dealt with the Seraphon – swamping the objectives and summoning Chimeras to finish people off.

Ole is a player who switches armies around, and it is no surprise to see him doing well with a different army!

Declan: 4-1 at the Worlds. Well done to Phil with Slaves to Darkness. Sure it is Archaon in a Host of the Everchosen list. Varanguard are great support units for Archaon, but it is the big guy who does the heavy lifting here. Able to auto-kill other models into his sword, fight twice, and with immense movement. I have managed to kill him before, but my normal approach is to ignore him — not an easy method.

It’s great to see variety at the Worlds and one of the main characters of Age of Sigmar making an appearance.

Declan – Seraphon have been good throughout GHB21 and they end here also on top. There’s loads you can do with the list and that is why they remain on top. Normally people take the Solar Engines but Michael has taken 3 Ark of Soteks. These have some advantages over the Solar Engines – they are cheaper, don’t give up additional Hunt points, and they are great into the mirror. Lots of attacks, with mortal wounds and damage 1 mean a Thunder Lizard list has minimal impact on this.

Added to this Kroak throws out a tonne of mortal wound magic to be able to take down support characters at range with ease. There’s no surprise this list came out on top with all it’s tools!

Declan – a totally different type of Thunder Lizard army goes to show the strength in depth to the book. This relies on the Bastiladons shooting at range, and buffing the 30 skinks with 4 or 5 buffs (most automatic) and rending through an opponent at range.

If your opponent is lucky enough to reach you, the Bastiladons provide excellent blockers of space with their 1+ armour save. Unless you bring mortal wounds this a monster list to defeat. I tend to go for the big unit of Skinks, but you need to charge a sacrificial unit first to make them use unleash hell. That said I’ve always struggled against this list, and I imagine others do as well.

Declan – the Incarnate! Emma has brought a monstrous beast in the Incarnate, backing up a Legion of the First Prince list which has all the tech. If you’ve not seen it before it is very difficult to play against due to all the moving parts. It also does surprisingly little damage – although the Incarnate will change this.

This army wins by stopping opponents getting objectives and battle tactics with Belakor turning off one unit for a turn and Kairos to change a dice roll. If you think you’re running 6″ to get that objective, you’re probably not. This means it’s difficult to reliably score points against it whilst it racks them up. Nothing in GHB22 suggests this won’t work just as well.

Declan – LRL and the first Purple Sun of Shyish we’ve seen. And boy… is it a monster.

Games Workshop – GHB22

Whilst it’s difficult to cast the LRL shouldn’t have too much trouble, and they you’re looking at a huge area that big monsters can’t go into and – even they risk it – they’ll be at -1 save. An extra pip of rend is worth it’s weight in gold.

The rest of the army is based around Teclis who can auto-cast spells (look a Purple Sun!) and 20 Sentinels for some long range non-LOS shooting with mortal wounds and re-rolling thrown in for good measure.

I’ve fought Teclis before, and the answer I think is to charge en-masse and kill everything that isn’t Teclis – oh… and don’t roll a 1!

We’ve been discussing at Woehammer how we can bring even more lists for you to look at! So someone (Declan) had the clever idea of doing tournament Previews where we focus on lists form a specific faction each week! This week we’ll mostly be talking about Stormcast Eternals! (Fast Show anyone?)

Declan – So firstly a confession – I have played against Stormcast extensively under GHB21, but I haven’t read GHB22 yet as I had a tournament last weekend. But hopefully I can add some insight!

List 1 – David Hernandez – Open DKHM Verano (GHB 22)

Declan – This list has a little bit of everything, and it’ll no doubt be able to deal with anything that can be thrown at it. Translocation (teleport) is insanely good with High Priest (re-roll prayer), allowing for great manoeuvrability and coverage of the board.

The Stormdrake Guard (Dragons) are always good with high movement, mortal wound shooting, and a decent close combat attack, all wrapped in a 3+ armour save. That all said I think that the power in this comes from the deceptively good units of 10; Liberators (cheap points per wound, good save), Judicators (24″, 3+/3+/-1/1), and Protectors (3/3+/3+/-1/1). The volume of damage 1 attacks is great in the current meta with Thunder Lizards (-1 damage) still being popular. I’m not sure how to deal with all the 4+ armour saves, and then adding Gardus into the mix! A great list with so many tools.

Declan – Pete is playing in GHB21 at the Champions (Worlds) event and he’s brought everything we’ve spoken about and written about before. Longstrikes with teleport will take off most important units before you’ve had a chance to play with them, whilst the Stormdrake Guard are in your face doing damage and pinning into your deployment.

The Liberators & Vindictors are useful little objective holders, and Bastian is hard as nails. The only thing that may cause Pete trouble is a low wound count, but it’s all wrapped up in 3+ and 4+ armour saves; this was a good army throughout GHB21 and will continue to be a popular choice.

Good luck to Pete and his fellow competitors this weekend at the T-Sports Arena.

Declan – Deinok’s gone for a combination of the 2 lists above with a High Priest and Longstrike Crossbows, but no Stormdrake Guards. The Longstrikes are not alone though and have brought the Protectors and Retributors (2/3+/3+/-1/2). These two large units pack a hell of a punch, and with the heroes providing teleport and celestial blades, they can be where needed, and wounding on 2s.

The true genius of this list is the new Gnashing Jaws being taken, leaning into the new GHB22 and what may turn out to be the age of the Endless spell!

Games Workshop – GHB22

Lots of mortal wounds on a 2+ against anything with with a low move characteristic. This is a massive step up to the previous version which only caused mortal wounds on a 6+. Tempted to take it myself.

Top Three AoS Lists from UK tSports Champions 2022

The UK tSports Champions 2022 was an inaugural event organised by the wonderful people at Honest Wargamer and TSportsNetwork. It took place in Nottingham, UK on 18th and 19th June. It involved 16 players from around the UK, vying to be crowned the champion of champions in a 5 game tournament.

Tournament Format

The format is a little different to your usual GT, in that players are seeded into groups on day 1, and then play each other person in their group once. Depending on where they finished in their group would determine which ‘final’ route they would be on the next day. (I.e. group winners could finished 1st-4th), runners up in the group would be playing for 5th-8th, and so on).

Our very own Declan is ranked high enough in the UK rankings, and as a result was invited to the event. He chose to play with his Big Waaagh! Which you can read about here.

As a result, I’ve invited Declan to discuss the armies in this article as who better but the man who took part! (Declan – cheers Peter; it was a great event!)

The Top Three AoS Lists from the UK tSports Champions 2022

Declan – I’ve managed to avoid Dan this tournament season, mostly by virtue of not being good enough to compete with him. He has played a lot of different armies to qualify (see above on the left), but following the White Dwarf Article on Beasts of Chaos he has returned to an army he likes playing… and who can blame him with rend improving throughout the game.

In fact this is where this army excels – The incarnate can’t be killed easily, so can take turns 1-3 and the army takes over turn 3-5. And the army is Tzaangors… lots of them. They are the ‘close combat’ ones, and can dish out huge damage especially with their ability Guided by the Past which allows the whole unit to reroll hits and wounds if an enemy unit has already attacked in combat. So if Dan is in combat with weaker units he can let the enemy fight first, or if he’s charged! Then retreat & rally!

Declan: An army that regular readers of Woehammer will have seen come to the fore from Toby. He qualified with another variety of armies and represented Team England at AoS (as did Dan & Ritchie).

As Dan did he has also brought an Incarnate to survive, add punch, kill monsters and eat Endless Spells. Toby only lost to Dan in the final, and he’s been smashing the tournament scene all season. I was fortunate enough to play him at the start of the season and he (like all the 16 in the final) is a great player and great fun to play against.

The Nurgle are great because they can’t really be debuffed – large number of damage one attacks with minimal rend, but backed up by mortal wounds via disease markers. This is a great army, can do battle tactics in its sleep, and is a great counter to Seraphon Thunder Lizards (because of damage 1) who are at the top of the rankings with Nurgle.

Great result for Toby in his first full season at AoS.

Declan: I was fortunate to play Ritchie in a very tight game (only 3 VPs in it), when I grabbed the win. But he qualified top of the group by beating the 2 Seraphon lists in Group 1. This was no easy feat though, and with the pressure on game 2, Ritchie beat Mike Stewart – the number one ranked player in the World! It really does show the importance of not letting an early defeat put you off your game.

Like his fellow top three players, Ritchie is in Team England and qualified for the Top 16 by playing a large variety of armies. He has the same core as Toby with Blightlords, at least one Lord of Affliction and an Incarnate. His optional choices include another monster (Bloab) allowing him to grap additional battle tactic points from making a 3rd unit into a monster, or a second for Savage Spearhead. Making full use of GHB21 and the season of the monsters.

Declan – Peter has chosen the last of the top qualifiers and Alex did very well with a Magmadroth inspired army, only falling at the Nurgle wall of flesh that was Toby & Ritchie. Fyreslayers are good, survivable and the Magmadroths can dish out damage, take damage and use their runes to do exactly what they need to do, when the need to do it.

Being able to put 3 Magmadroths in Hunters of the Heartland is a great touch in GHB21 and obviously this is not repeatable in GHB22, but the army will definitely have play in the new edition. Fyreslayers are here to stay and I’m sure Alex will have a great season for GHB22 as well.

Declan – A huge thank you to Ziggy for running the event, and Rob for hosting. It was amazing and a great end to an incredible season for me! Top marks, and all games were played at a top level, with all players having fun as well.

It is the end of the season, but there’s lots here to learn that’ll help any player in GHB22.

Declan: Ah Nurgle… the new hotness and it’s easy to see why (it may not be; I had it explained to me over the weekend). I have now played a similar list and this is just great into the meta. Large numbers of low damage attacks means Seraphon Thunder Lizard don’t benefit from their allegiance and any debuffs (-1 attack etc…) have no benefit either.

Added to that they are lightning quick with a pre-game move and the Overpowering Stench stops command abilities being used nearby. So no all-out-defense or inspiring presence. It’s a great army which we are seeing a lot of at the moment.

Declan: I should have looked ahead. Sorry; but there’s not a lot different here – just more of the same because the same is good. When a player spends 1,540 points on one warscroll it may show a problem… but not for GW model selling.

There’s no criticism of the players though – it’s a good army and gives a good shot at 4-1s and 5-0s. If that’s your aim why wouldn’t you want to take one of the best armies available?

Declan: Ah Varanguard – hard as nails; hit like freight trains and are leaders so they can do great work into some of the missions as well. It’s great to see StD doing well though – this is not a net-list that is smashing up the tournament scene and a 4-1-0 result is impressive.

The Chaos Sorcerer Lord on Manticore is often substituted by a Chaos Sorcerer Lord on Foot, but the Manticore allows him to keep up with the Varanguard – and ensure the army hits like a freight train – all at the same time.

The Battleline choices are also cheap as chips (as a Gitz player I would kill for Battleline this cheap) and they are not bad. Great addition for screening so Manuelle can chose who goes first or second with his 1 drop.

Declan: Ah Khorne… a fighting force in a game of fighting – they’ll be smashing up the tables right. Unfortunately not – GW struggle with making Khorne good enough that they can reliably kill but not so that they win everything… and they’ve got the balance wrong so often.

The Bloodthirsters are only 280 points so are really throw away models (a Mangler Squig Loonboss is 290) so don’t expect too much from them – in this force is Skarbrand who does the work. 6″ pile in; and fighting well if he didn’t fight in the last battleround. Unfortunately most people know this now and either kill or avoid him – poor chap!

Declan: To say Seraphon have done well in AoS3 is an understatement of the year. Chris has not taken Thunder Lizard, but has gone for magic. In order to compensate for the slightly reduction in survivability there’s an Incarnate! I don’t know how many of these we’ll see but they are nigh on impossible to kill in one turn (there are a few ‘instant kill’ abilities that can do it). It’ll be interesting how many Incarnate’s we’ll see given their high price point.

If I do play one soon I’ll be able to add some additional comments!! Well done to Chris – Seraphon may be the best army out there (or perhaps second), but to take them to a 5-0 still requires a high level of skill.

Matt rocks up undefeated with what must be the new Nighthaunt… how do I know – he’s got the Black Coach and is taking Nighthaunt! From one player in the UK with the Coach to three in one list at the Champions event this weekend, things have certainly changed for the ghostly bois!

No crossbow lads for Matt despite GW trying to flog them; but he has gone Bladegheists instead – and loads of them. They must be good to have gone 4-1-0 and the debuffs to opponents will be helping to keep them alive.

Declan Hazel has taken another of the new army releases, and like my recent comments there are reavers and thralls… lots of them! The reavers are the shooty ones, and although they have shorter range than the LRL Sentinels, they do move — and quick! — so expect them to grab some objectives whilst shooting you off the board.

It’s good to see different armies emerging since the release of the new book, but I would much prefer to see better internal balance (like Seraphon), than the famine & feast of the last two IDK books. Great work by Hazel!

Declan – Peter has clearly listened to my comments about his last secret pick and gone down the list somewhat. And I’m surprised he only had to get to 10th to get a Gitz list. Dominic managed the holy grail of 2 draws… a result that’s probably rarer than a straight 5-0; and all with Troggs. As Stuart Hodges (Trogg) will tell us – Troggs are the best and Dominic has proven this with a Trogg list whose only allies are the Marshcrawler and MireBrute. This means it’s all Troggs, all the time.

To cement my opinion of Dominic being a genius amongst Troggs, he’s also got an Aleguzzler, Rippas & Spider Riders. Remember the Aleguzzler falls over on any double to charge (welcome back to AoS1… which everyone thought dead!) and Spider Riders with poison arrows in the fluff — but none anywhere near the army. I think the lads leave them at home to prevent friendly fire. Great list, and a frankly superb result. Well done Dominic — and more of these please Peter!

Declan: The Drowned Men with Pusgoyle Blightlords is having something of a impact on the meta at the moment. Lots of flies were seen at AoS Worlds and at events before and since. The Lord of Afflications seems to be a given for the battleline, and the army is very quick – like ‘old’ Nurgle quick. The slow chip of mortal wounds from disease markers don’t seem to slow the game down much (in my experience) either.

It’s a good army – well piloted by Emma – but may be in danger of becoming the ‘new’ Dragons!

Declan: Ah… Soulblight Gravelords. They have been good since their book was released and Jeremy has piloted this to a superb 5-0 in a large field. Well done to him. It’s a low drop but definitely reliant on the Mortarchs. I’ve not seen Neferata before (although as fate would have it, I am reading a Black Library book about her) but Manfred is a superb caster – sort of a mini-Nagash – and both Mortarchs are monsters in their own right.

It’s worth noting despite the entry Peter has got this from that the Blood Knights and Grave Guard are reinforced… I know what 20 Graveguard can do (ouch), but I’m glad I’m not facing 10 Blood Knights in one unit! Wow… and ouch.

Declan: Bill is always there or there abouts at tournaments and this is no exception with a 4-1. With more Pusgoyle Blightlords (GW may run out at this rate), and the required Lord of Afflictions, Bill has gone for Belakor. As most readers will know he can ‘turn off’ a unit meaning that a unit may not act in a turn. It is not fun charging and then finding you can’t fight, and if you’re lucky enough to double-turn Bill’s army… the ability lasts until his next hero phase.

Declan: Peter’s selection of one to watch here is fourth… so no real prizes to him for finding it…! But it is another 4-1, and it has lots of Thralls. With the new book the Eels were quickly dropped by most players and it’s because of the output of the Thralls and that they get bonuses against models with 1 wound, and models with 3+ wounds. They are made of paper, but they are solid paper hammers… smash! I’m just glad I run a few Ardboyz for these guys — perfect, as long as it’s my turn, I go first and it’s not High Tide (ah well…. maybe not perfect then!!)

Declan: Well, I may have been away for a bit whilst real life, and a short holiday interfered but it’s good to see that Seraphon haven’t taken a break from winning tournaments! I don’t know if this is a homage to AOS England’s Ark of Sotek list, but regardless it is a good list. The Bastiladons are not quite as killy as the beam versions, but they are still as survivable against most armies, and with them acting together the battle tactics get a lot of additional points – for minimal risk. They are also not on the Priority target list!

So if they are the unkillable units, what kills? Well Kroak obviously – he can dish out a load of damage via his spells and the Saurus Guard can keep him alive – if you’re going to kill them concentrate everything you have… or alternatively ignore him and hope he can’t kill your army in 5 turns — unfortunately if he rolls well he can.

I’m impressed at the double win against Bonereapers in the last 2 games though – lots of difficult to kill models on both sides… I can only assume Thomas go to the objectives first – the Battle Regiment would have helped with this. Well done to Thomas on that mythical 5-0!

Declan: Randall has taken the Stormcast list (really – just ignore the Cities of Sigmar keyword lies!) with his 4 dragons. They technically give away additional points when they die… but not much in the game is killing them. He has then gone with a surprising addition of Kharadron Overlords although the Ironclad is another difficult model to destroy… just remember it’s not a monster — weird!

Finally, he’s rounded it off with Pistoliers which may not be great individually, but if you have 15 of them that’s a lot of shots coming at you. It’s an army where target priority is difficult especially given it’s incredible speed. A more than respectable 4-1 and a great example of the power move known as the ‘submarine’. (Losing game 1, then winning the next 4!!)

Declan: Gluttons keep popping up in USA winning lists, but they never seem to get off the ground in the UK meta… so I don’t really know how they work. I think this list is reasonably clear though… it charges, does mortal wounds, and then does loads of damage.

Losing only to Big Waaagh, Jacob hasn’t worried about a slightly higher drop, has gone full narrative on his Frostlord’s name and will fill the board with this list. The Gluttons are not bad as a unit and if they’re holding an objective can’t be ignored – or dealt with by a weak unit. You’ll need to shoot them, or charge and strike first – but as his opponent you’ll probably want to kill the Stonehorns first – target saturation at it’s best!

Declan: Peter does like his Kruleboyz lists, so it’s no surprise to see this picked. What is a surprise is the 40 Gutrippaz and Killa-Boss on foot. The Gutrippaz are not bad… but just a little too expensive. They can still hurt if they strike first, whilst the Killa-Boss on foot is a cheap way to get Mork’s Eye Pebble. This is a great addition to the list with so many shooting armies in the game. 5+ ward means a significant increase in survivability… if only for one turn.

But against shooting armies, the 1 turn of surviving is often all you need before the 40 Gutrippaz start making a mess. Gobsprakk ensures that enemy wizards feel some threat if a spell is dispelled and whilst he won’t beat a MawKrusha he is a cheap and quick way to grab a poorly defended objective. Hopefully there will be a points reduction for Kruleboyz in the new GHB and the ‘horde’ changes will help them.

Super Major G&T saw 16 players vying to be crowned champion in a 5 game tournament. Judging by the lists this tournament seemed like the an extremely fun and relaxed event. The type that would be a dream first tournament for any player.

Declan: Normally I would say ‘wow’ at Slyvaneth winning a 2 day tournament, but check out the name… Math Mallow (shockingly not his real name!!) has been smashing opponents since AoS3 dropped including my Sons of Behemat at the same venue last year.

It is in essence a shooting / magic list with amazing mobility in the Tree Revenants helping with battle tactics. Whilst you may think that Alarielle is the key here, you’d be mistaken – it’s the Warsong Revenant, who is a beast! Casting Throne of Vines for bonuses to cast, and then throwing spells through the Spell Portal there is nowhere to hide from this army.

Whilst short on wounds, the one drop means Mallow gets the choice of first / second often and his shooting / magic can kill key units early on.

Declan: Gitz, Gitz, Gitz!! Unbeaten as well. Dominic’s pulled it out of the fire here, with probably the strongest faction in the book (it’s a weak book!). He’s got a monster for the battle tactics (just don’t roll a double on the charge), and the Rockguts can put out damage, before coming back in useful groups of 3 when you kill them.

This is all about the units helping each other (Marshcrawler is now essential), or just being a beat stick (Mirebrute Troggoth). Dominic must have concentrated on the objectives here though, as there’s not quite enough power to kill enough of the enemy – great work!

Declan: Matt has been one of the top players in the UK for some time now and he’s pivoted to the IdK here but left the Namarti Thralls at home and instead taking Allopexes in a Shiver! 4 Characters including a Prime doesn’t give him a lot of models on the table top (especially as one is off the table until turn 3), so it needs to survive and pick it’s targets.

But the tides help here, with strike first in turn 3 across the board, and the Akhelian King being able to give the units the same ability when required.

It’s fast, it’s small, but don’t be lulled into a false sense of security – this will smash so many armies before you’ve realised the threat!
